How about X-Men Legends 3??? I would love to see that made. Oh yea Activision made those games. Guess its just wishful thinking. This canceled game probably would've sucked anyways.
Art for EA Chicago's cancelled Marvel fighting game shows Spider-Man, Hulk, and Captain America as playable characters; game was shut down in 2008 by EA and Marvel.
Concept art for the cancelled Marvel fighting game from the now-defunct studio EA Chicago has appeared, courtesy of Siliconera.
According to the report, an artist who worked on the title has shared some assets that were created prior to the title being cancelled by EA in 2008, following the closure of EA Chicago.
The released screenshots of the game show Captain America, Spiderman, and the Hulk as playable characters, a comic book aesthetic, as well as features including a campaign mode and online play.
The deal between Marvel and EA dates back to 2004, when the companies announced a multiyear agreement for fighting games featuring famous Marvel characters alongside new EA-created heroes.
The first game of the deal was Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects, a poorly received effort that saw its price slashed by 40 percent less than two months after its release.
In early 2009, EA and Marvel jointly agreed to discontinue development of future Marvel titles.
No doubt before Batman Arkham City was given the green light, it probably had the player able to BE Bruce Wayne during the Daytime, or whenever, and do Bruce Wayne stuff, and be the Batman at night or whenever in a sandbox Gotham City, where you were able to drive the Batmobile around and Fly the Batwing... No stupid Batmobile on rails or Batwing on Rails garbage either, free roam and investigation... What we got was a good game but a shimmer of what it was supposed to be... The CEO probably said who wants to drive the Batmobile or the Batwing? Who wants to move around Gotham City and follow up leads to the Joker and other plots? Who would want to do that? Yuck... Who wants to be able to Change into Bruce Wayne to get inside Wayne Manor or Visit Wayne Tower and see his other life and it's happenings, who would want to see the city happening as Bruce Wayne to get substance to why Batman is in the City under everyone's nose... lol
They should fire the CEO that let development fall apart... Marvel is at it's highest point in history. Any CEO stupid enough to let a Marvel Title fall apart deserves to be out of a job. I've been following Marvel since their stock was $5 a share. Once Xmen and Spiderman hit the movies theaters it's been success after success. These out of touch CEO's are the whole reason you see companies biting the dust left and right, get these company destroying newspaper and stockbroking dolts OUT of the game company business and let people in that know what there audience happens to be! It makes me so angry to see good proven game companies crumble under CEO's that could care less and know nothing about the industry and who they are selling their wares to!
The same thing happened to Midway Games, they were on the verge of making a game called "HERO" that would have revolutionized the Superhero game concept but it was being run by a CEO that thought the world needed more Mortal Kombat remakes... Rather than innovative GOOD game concepts...
EA just couldn't do Marvel's universe justice.
I hope that Marvel one day opens up an amazing studio like we saw with this generations success story, Rocksteady.
LOL 'and online play' of course it would. It's an EA game, which means it would include an online pass just for them to shut down a couple years later
I played Rise of the Imperfects not the best effort. So no wonder EA didn't make anymore games with Marvel
@Pr0ving4Gr0undz I love that game. I had it on PS2 many years ago until I let a friend borrow it and never got it back. I bought it again a few months ago for a few bucks from Amazon. The roster is amazing. The interactive environments are awesome. I still have just as much fun with that game as I do with the modern fighters.
Seriously? Nobody remember this game? there was even a video.. If im not mistaken it was Cap fghting Juggernaut.. ita was suposed to be a 3D fighting game with open enviroment.. (like a 3D action gme and not like a traditional fighting game2D or 2.5D) I was so exited.. and so sad to know when it was canned.
@idosofacility There was a game being made by THQ that had the Hulk, Ironman, Captain America, etc Basically the Avengers. It was a 3D FPS Superhero Game... When i saw Ironman Flying with his Hands out in front of him as the only visible visual and the Hulk Punch Someone with big Green Fists if FPS my jaw dropped! I was amazed that this was cancelled i was thinking WTF? Why was this cancelled?!
@idosofacility IN First Person View, Ironman was putting his arm out in front of him Metroid 3D style and blasting enemies with Repulsors, the Hulk was punching enemies and they were flying 100 ft backward and smashing into walls. Then Ironman took off and was flying around FPS style with the view from First Person Perspective his arms extended infront of him flying around... I still can't believe it was cancelled it looked like a AAA title. I'm always confused at what games get the green light and what games get the axe. It's almost like the person that looks at a game in development either doesn't play games, has not concept of a good game, or is the most boring banal person in the whole building... That's got to be the person that gives the thumbs up...
Good. The game would suck under EA anyway. They should've handled the Marvel license with Irrational Games, maker of Freedom Force. It would've fit this idea brilliantly.
Whoa, Laura Parker is a hottie!
On the article: I'm glad EA didn't get to produce any Marvel games, because I dislike supporting EA almost as much as I dislike supporting Activision. Here's hoping that Marvel opens up their own game studio sometime in the near future and start pushing out some quality games, similar to the quality of their recent movies.
I actually remember this game being featured on GTTV. It was like Marvel Nemesis with transitioning stages similar to Injustice. They only showed Cap and Hulk fighting though.
Is this that fighting game that was a 360 degrees like tenkaiichi budokai games? I remember seeing some game play on G4 back in 2007 and then the game seemed to vanish. I even asked about it last year on here and no one even seemed to know about it lol.
I feel that I'm the only one who loved Marvel Nemesis. It had a great atmosphere and felt like Power Stone except with Marvel characters. I even bought the accompanying comic books.
@higherflyerJ I still want to try it myself. I've played several fighting games the FGC hates that I end up liking (Super Smash Bros series, the 3D Mortal Kombat games on PS2, Naruto: Clash of Ninja series, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 1, One Piece: Grand Battle, etc) and this doesn't look that bad at all.
@nintendoboy16 Fighting is my favorite genre of games so I, too, love almost all of them. You really should try it. It's kind of a mix between fighting and action. Once you unlock the characters in Story mode you can use them in the straight fighting only mode. It's only 4 or 5 bucks on Amazon and that's including shipping. You really can't lose. Treat yourself with it for a Christmas present. lol.
@higherflyerJ Im with you. I think the game was very fun, and you are absolutely right about the power stone similarities. I'm hoping some company attempts to recreate something similar to this with marvel characters.
@tranceology3 Same here. If Power Stone had a story mode it wouldn't have been too different from this.
@higherflyerJ dude...i LOVED the game. it lacked some depth, had a great sense of gritty style that truly captured those characters in a remarkable way. brilliant
@whakyZ86 RIght? I'm glad I'm not the only one. I loved the dark atmosphere of it all... especially the art style of otherwise "goody goody" characters. The live-action cutscenes were also awesome. I loved seeing how the new mutants got their powers. It's sad we never got to see any of them again because some of them were quite original. I popped it in yesterday after this and beat it for the, at least, 15th time and it is still fun and always will be for me.
@bradrame It is quite refreshing to see something other than Eddie's ugly mug staring at me on every article.
...I kid. I love you, Eddie
I never played Rise Of The imperfects but the reviews were bad and a friend even said it sucked. The sad thing is Activision isn't any better a fit for Marvel....
I'd like to see Marvel hire some industry vets and start their own game studio and make their own games....I'm tired of the opportunistic Activision games and these crappy Sega games....
I'd love to play something as fun as X-Men Legends again but not as a MMO, F that noise man.
@MJ12-Conspiracy Just think if Activision didn't make Marvel games we could probably get a Arkham Asylum/City quality Spider-Man game.
@Epictacosam I know but if Marvel started their own studio they could definitely make a game like Legends...just not in name. My real point was I'd like to see a change because I like Marvel Comics and the characters, we get these awesome movies now and still the games suffer.....
They may as well print that on toilet paper rolls at this point...I mean leave the fighting games to Capcom or Namco...
As negative as this will sound, I am glad because we REALLY DON'T NEED just-another fighter game, especially when it takes perfectly good material such as this and just dumbs and mutilates it to an arcade fighter...HOPEFULLY we can learn from this!
