Clover stars had split Capcom
Publisher confirms that Viewtiful Joe producer and Devil May Cry director left the publisher earlier this year; Resident Evil creator remains as contractor.
When Capcom announced yesterday that it was shutting down its creativity focused subsidiary Clover Studio, one of the big questions was what would become of its big-name talent. Clover counted a number of notable names on its development roster, including Atsushi Inaba (producer of Steel Battalion and Viewtiful Joe), Shinji Mikami (creator of Resident Evil), and Hideki Kamiya (director of Devil May Cry).
Today Capcom confirmed that two of those three are no longer with the company and actually hadn't been there for some months.
"Mr. Mikami is still working as a contracted producer for Capcom, but unfortunately Mr. Inaba and Mr. Kamiya are no longer with the company, having left respectively in June and July this year," a Capcom representative told GameSpot. "We obviously hoped that Mr. Inaba and Mr. Kamiya would return to work for Capcom, but both were looking for fresh challenges."
As for what happens with the rest of the Clover crew, the rep said that Capcom is "currently in discussions with remaining staff members to incorporate them into positions within the Capcom R&D teams."
[UPDATE] Until Clover's doors are closed for good in March 2007, the Capcom representative said that the remaining staff will be busy working on the PAL versions of Okami and God Hand. She also confirmed that Capcom retains all the intellectual property rights to Clover's games.
Hey guys... Oh I am a year and a half late... Well this old news still sucks lol
thank god mikami is not going
Cool with me, no complaints here!
Very very sad news....but if 2 of 3 were out to reach another goals....there´s nothing more to do. Thanks to all in Clover for the great games they did with all of the games they´ve released throught these years! Hope to see you in another titles!
Capcom announced yesterday that it was shutting down its creativity
this really sucks, give us the reason why at least.
They'll be missed.
Yeah Steel Battalion on next gen, would be nothing short of absolutely amazing in my book. If it ever happens, count me in
I can understand Mikami wanting to leave, he never wanted RE4 on anything but Gamecube. But even with his status as well respected series creator, he couldn't stop the juggernaut of Capcom. So he probably compromised.
clover....chips?
awwww ... what on earth did Capcom do this time?!!!
My dreams of playing Steel Battalion on the next gen definetely crushed. With bigger space on dics, and experience gained from the last two, I was hoping for a great game with lots of content. Plus, people are willing to spend more money on games on this new gen. I guess it's the HD state of mind. MS, wake up! That's a sign that you could more support in Japan. You do need more IP's made buy Japanese developers, and hopefully exclusive to the 360. No matter how good Blue Dragon and Lost O may turn out to be, it won't be enough. MS has to be even more ambitious. When I know they they have that in mind.
Hmm... Extremely saddening news. And they were quite good just where they were too. I suppose it can't be helped...
too bad for capcom...
I'm shocked that Inaba and Kamiya left. I wonder where they will go from here. I will miss you Clover. Thanks for the Viewtiful Joe series and Okami.
So sad and it proves that it's really a cruel industry: how to mix creativity and sales... God, it's tough to be a creator nowadays !
But wher did thay go If any one know please PM me
Gosh, I don't know how to respond to that.-_-
Don't blame Capcom just because Inaba and Kamiya wanted to quit and go somewhere else, I believe Capcom still got what it takes to make games.
does anyone know that those people are working on now?
Goodbye God Hand 2, hello re-re-RE-release of Street Fighter II...
I'm always mixed on Clover Studios. Okami is their best effort I've seen, but even then it has some serious flaws that keep it from being an incredible title - it's merely pretty good. However, I think I know what caused Clover to close down - constant delays. Viewtiful Joe was delayed over a year. The second VJ game was delayed several months. Okami was delayed nearly a year and a half. God Hand is the only title they've ever produced that has managed to come within deadline. Quite simply, they eat up tons of time, and consequently money. They pretty much needed to have every single game be the next Resident Evil to justify their continued existence. They couldn't pull it off, and now the doors are shut.
For shame, Capcom. Is nothing sacred?
bad news, they made great games. shame on you capcom. I hope Sony will get them, clover and Fumito Ueda team working together will be great. masterminds!
i'll wish them luck wherever they go to ('cause i got 360 and i'll buy PS3 heh )
maybe Monolith studios(the team behind Baten Kaitos and Xenosaga) is thier next stop for Shinji Mikami and Hideki Kamiya , i mean Monoloth is desparate for creative brains, right?
Sony please get them, before M$ "shows them the money!":(
i hope they join hands with a good developer or something.
Alright, so this explains everything. Good for the guys who went their separate ways ! Bad for Capcom, though....
Maybe Inaba and Kamiya will start there own studio. But still I will miss Clover studios. They knew how to make a damn good game.
Sigh... Hope Inaba-san and Kamiya-san return the world of gaming with something that will rock the world once again. Arigato, Clover... I'll never forget the dream that studio stood for.
That's too bad, I wish them the best of luck and hopefully they can create their own studios to create more innovative and cool games.
Was Kamiya working on DMC4? No, and he hasn't worked on any DMC titles past the first one. DMC4 is far from doomed. The staff working on DMC4 consist of project leads of DMC4 and DMC1 as well, with the exception of Kamiya. Still, his departure is undoubtedly a great loss to Capcom. He's created nothing but gold from day one. Perhaps him and Inaba will form an indie development house, or join their former colleagues/bosses at Game Republic or.. Noritaka Funamizu's company.
man i hope viewtiful joe isnt turned into a megaman like series. and i hope if capcom makes okami 2 that they dont screw it up. clover was a great studio.
and what about the Re5 and Devil May Cry 4 ?
Soon as the announce a new development team... In swoops microsoft to buy them.
Hideki Kamiya only work in devil may cry 1, dmc 4 it´s being made by the team of dmc3.
Hideki Kamiya not are working for Capcom anymore since July???? Holy Crap. DMC4 Is DOOMED!!!!!! Well, i hope not, but maybe that could explain the 'bad-taste' of DMC4 in TGS... interesting. Was Kamiya working on DMC4?
THIS SOUNDS REALLY LAME!
She? Is she hot..?
Now I understand why they closed clover studio, his talents are gone O.o
The studio is up for grab..buy them while u still can :)
exactly what i suspected was the real story behind the press release
No wonder they shut down Clover..
sizzlemebacon2 I didn't know that. Well thankfully Yuji Shimomura is working on DMC4. Otherwise I'd still be worried.
Wow if these two guys left in June and July then that leaves the question, were exactly did they go? It's hard for me to believe that these guys have been out of work for nearly 5 months.
No Kamiya?! Hory clap! Not good....
I would love to see those 2 go to Nintendo; especially Atsushi Inaba, since his wacky creative games would definitely sell better on the Wii than on the PS3 or 360.
well, I persume Shinji Mikami is currently working on Resident Evil 5. Although I've been hearing rumors that Atsushi Inaba wanted to bow away from video games, and this closing was somewhat of his big departure. I just hope all the artists, talent, programes, musicians, writers all stay with capcom since clover was a studio within a studio all funded by Capcom and working for Capcom. Still, PLEASE GAMESPOT! Keep me informed on Inaba and Kamiya, those guys are AMAZING TALLENT and designers who care about FUN GAMES!
As bad as this might be may be this could be a way for the people to start there own company's and bring more great games out.
