ChartSpot: November 2005
Star Wars: Battlefront II and Call of Duty 2 conquer the console and PC charts while Mario Kart DS overtakes Grand Theft Auto in the portable race.
After a slight hiccup, NPD has released the game-sale charts for November 2005. With the Xbox 360 hitting North American stores on November 22, the month saw the second platform launch of the year, following the March debut of the PSP. Although the next-generation console was in notoriously short supply, one title for the platform proved exceptionally popular. The 360 version of Call of Duty 2 was the third-best-selling console game in November, coming in just behind the Xbox and PlayStation 2 versions of Star Wars: Battlefront II.
However, Activision's shooter had little company from other 360 titles. Only two other games for the next-gen platform made the top 20--Electronic Arts' Madden NFL 06 (8th) and Need for Speed Most Wanted (19th). However, when combined, sales of the limited and standard editions of Microsoft Game Studios' Perfect Dark Zero actually exceeded sales of Need for Speed Most Wanted, as shown on the Xbox 360 top 10. (Why the figures were not combined in the overall top 20 was not explained by NPD.)
Other current-generation titles debuting in the console top 20 were Mario Kart DS (4th), WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw 2 (PS2, 5th), Mario Party 7 (GameCube, 10th), Call of Duty 2: Big Red One (PS2, 11th), 50 Cent: Bulletproof (PS2, 12th), Ratchet: Deadlocked (PS2, 14th), the PS2 version of Need For Speed: Most Wanted (18th), and the PSP version of Star Wars: Battlefront II (20th).
Of greater interest were the titles that weren't among the top 20 console games for November. Despite extensive marketing campaigns, two of Activision's highest-profile holiday releases, True Crime: New York City and Gun, were shut out of the list. Also, no version of Ubisoft's laboriously titled film tie-in, Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie, cracked the top 20.
On the PC charts, the PC versions of Call of Duty 2 and Star Wars: Battlefront II also did well, finishing a respective first and fourth. The Battlefield 2 Special Forces expansion pack saw a decent debut at tenth, five places ahead of another underperforming Activision releases, The Movies. In between were two new entrants from EA: Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire (11th) and The Sims 2 Holiday Edition (12th).

If people are so convinced that one console or company is the best, why do they even care what anyone else thinks?
"ratchet deadlocked Jak X and Sly 3" Im not sure who asked why they werent up there, but really they dont deserve to be up there. In my opinion those games are no good. The first one of all three were new so they were pretty cool, but sony has made so many of those three that their just boring now.
People are stupid at launch times. Most of the games on the 360 were above avarage. Most games are avarage. Everything except the console ports is good. I would rather have a bunch of really great game so there are many to choose from than 1 supurb game.
M$ only made it on the all console list 4 times? I thought it was better than every other company and made the best consoles and sold the most merchandise....... where are all of M$ fanboys now? look how many time Sony makes it on the list (I include all consoles the company makes, just in case you are wondering) tallying up all the PSP and PS2 games on the list Sony made it on the list (of 20 games I might add) 14 times. What happened M$ fanboys... please give us your unwanted opinion... and also, flame me as much as you want. The info is right there, in front of your eyes. Its FACT! p.s.- I have a ps2, xbox, DS, Cube, and PSP (waiting on the *possibilty*, althought I hope) of a 360. I love all the consoles and the games that came out for each one. It makes the industry grow as a whole. but to sit there and say that one company is doing it better than the rest (fanboys) and not doing any research of any kind really bugs the **** outta me. Hows about this... AFTER you graduate middle school, THEN come back and try to make an argument. MAYBE after you are educated, you can actually support them with facts... Till then, grow up and figure out that you should learn to have fun with the toys you (but probably your *mommy and Daddy*) bought instead of trying to make others feel bad because they might not be able to afford the next gen console, or that they wasted their money on buying a PSP. Just think of it this way, instead of flaming them for buying a console that "you dont like" (because your older sibling tells you not to) be glad that they bought them. without them, the companies wouldnt be coming out with the games that you all know and love. and F.Y.I.- ive been there before, which is why I have such an extensive view on all of my arguments. I grew up and understood the companies points and what they are doing for the industry... Its about time you do the same.
Woopty Doo.. Mario Kart did pretty well, and Star Wars: Battlefront II. Too bad only gay games sold well on the Cube and GBA... But the DS seems to be on FIRE.
I always feel depressed when I look at the video game sales charts. When I see what actually sells, it always seems to fall short of my personal standards for great games. Sure, you have a few that show up on the charts that have actually earned their position and deserve to be there, but for every one of those you find something mediocore that sells but has no real gameplay value. *sigh* Of course, maybe I shouldn't post here right after reading that article on the lack of innovation in games. It's not exactly the type of thing that fills one with optimism in regards to the game market.
Hey you nerds, please stop acting like children and calling people nintendo freaks, sony drones, microsoft fanboys or whatever. You whining about how your system is better blah blah blah is ok, but don't take cheap shots at other people by calling them names, or calling them children because they play nintendo, or stupid because they play whatever. Keep that for the system wars board, not the comments page. And don't act like you work at the company and know the future and can tell if one system is going to fail or not. Just buy the games you like, stay away from the games you hate, and shut the hell up. thanks.
wha...50 cent above ratchet deadlocked...shame on you ppl who bought 50 cent...bullcrap
ok first I would like to say that I think Battlefront 2 deserves that spot on top now I would like to say that I think Jak X and Sly 3 should have had a spot on the PS2 chart not the overall the PS2 chart
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Nintendo!!
Frickin awsome
I think that if any of the companies went bankrupt, especially now since they have such a strong influence, that the other companies would just suffer. I mean, seriously, where would any of them be without the fierce competition that they have? There would be no more need to make the next-gen systems so much better, no reason for people to make great games. There are only 3 huge competitors, and most people already have all systems, with most of the games coming out for all 3. Can you imagine if there were only 2? What would be the good of choosing one when the same games will come out for both of them? Just look, Nintendo has its franchises, Microsoft has its, and Sony has its own stuff that comes out exclusively for its systems. The gaming industry would be so bland without one, and I'm a Nintendo fan, and if it went out of business, I would probably take that time to say, "Alright, I can quit my gaming career now." The only problem is that the companies seem to be setting up themselves to fail. Nintendo is risking a lot, Sony is making rash decisions and huge prices which could make it fail, and the only one that seems to be in the clear is the 360, simply because it is simply an upgrade. No big promises, no spectacular expectations, and so on.
this is dumb, nintendo will be bankrupt in 3 years mark my words
GTA Sucks!!! go mario!! yay!!!!!!!!
Yeah, wow, Mario Kart DS beat Libert Cities... except that Mario Kart was debutting and GTA wasn't. So saying Mario Kart is selling more than GTA is just wrong, and you can see that last month GTA was 4th compared to Mario Kart's 5th. Xbox 360 didn't sell well because first off, most people that would have a 360 and buying 360 games just can't find the damn thing. And it only had a week to sell before November ended.
why is this called something about mario and its DS game?
Mario Kart DS rulez joo allz!
GTA Liberty city Story is 50$ and Mario Kart DS is 33$ PSP 250 is 250$ and the DS is 130$ just make the math and u gonna see why mario kart DS won
If Sony were to drop the price of the PSP to be as inexpensive as the DS where do you think the DS would be?
PLUS, THERE ARE LESS PSP'S THAN DS'S SO THATS NOT A N EXCUSE, I OWN A DS AND I PLAYED PSP, AND I KNOW WHICH IS BETTER!!!
WHO CARES WHAT DID BETTER, THE GAMES ARE EVEN DIFFERENT GENRE TYPE!!!
Nintendo is jus 2 authentic...their games are sooo unique! ...originators...tru pioneers!! bigg up 2 da N
I is gonna go play MK right now
NINTENDO RUELS!!!
x360 seems to b doing really well considering how it released late in the month. x360 is cool. all of them are pretty cool. and stop arguing over which system is better.
PS3 is gonna get rocked by *struggling not to laugh* NINTENDO REVOLUTION! HAAAA HAAAA HAAAA HAAAA HAAAAAA HA.
EAT IT!!!!!! That's right GTA you got served by a kids game!
Another thing i just noticed, in the top 10 for ds, theres castlevania, advance wars, mario 64, and zoo tycoon, thats 4 ports, and three of the top 10 are the same game, so there's more ports than new games on the top 10 for DS. haha, and yea the psp has all ports pretty much in the top 10, but if that many people buy them, maybe they should keep making ports
You know what i just noticed, everyones complaining about the ports on the PSP, what the hell do you think mariokart is? And don't even say it's a different game, it just has different tracks, and a few new weapons. The only reason the DS doesn't have more ports is that it can't handle them, look at king kong and burnout. The only new mariokart game was doubledash, and it wasn't even as good as the rest of them
I'm SO damn glad King Kong didn't crack the list. I think I have seen enough of those commercials about it. Don't you?
Xbox 360 rules!!!!
LOL!!!! teh kidday game pwned casual crap!!!!
o dont forget Mario Kart DS is online and 34.99 so that really helps :). But dont worry the handheld industry is whats keeping nintendo alive, so praise and cheer for one game selling well :).
chock one up 4 nofriendo ds:)
Where's Resident Evil 4???? :(
thats the only game that the DS sells good....how sad...
they are going to last, long long time. maybe you think revolution's controller looks crappy, or that the psp is better than ds, but it isn't. Nintendo is trying to get to every videogamer on the planet using creativity and never before seen (played) game-play. personally I think ds is better than psp, but I ain't saying psp is bad. Psp has to much things, so it ruins faster. pixels break easily and the O button doesn't function correctly, among some things. It all comes down to the next-gen consoles to see who wins. NINTENDO RULES!
well, overwhelming how many nintendo fans have been wanting a game that finally wins over a psp game *cough* even though GTA for PSP is better *cough* which goes to show you how bad nintendo is at giving killer apps, which only include Mario, Link, and Metroid. Sorry, i have a few nintendo consoles, and i used to like them, but they aren't going to last long anymore.
BF truely RULLZ pips
Why isn't Mario Kart in the Nintendo DS' top list?
Nice to see DBZ, MKDS and SWBF2 up there.
DS is outselling the PSP every week, so stop whining about how 'great' the PSP is.
Um,cool.
big up to nintendo fans for buying the same game every 2 years and celebrating it. you people are insane.
Yeah and Mario Kart is on the DS, $200 cheaper. I own Mario Kart because I can't afford a PSP, believe me when I say I'd trade a portable Mario Kart for a portable GTA anyday. However, props to Nintendo, the competition isn't based on who made the better game, it is who sold more and with that said Nintendo won, period.
whew, talk about relief for ninty fanboys (like me).
Mario Cart beat GTA big surprise there. It has nothing to do with which game is better. Mario is just suitable for a larger age group. Face it Mario is enjoyed by everyone. GTA is an acquired taste and not suitable for anyone under 16. You can
Besides, if PSP's ever went into battle, the DS could take out their stylu's and scratch the PSP screen, then they could beat them down with the stylus
PSP fanboys, I'm a ps2 lover, I also love Nintendo, but I hope you PSP fanboys have fun playing your PS2 Ports that you've already played through
It's also good to see that Xbox 360 games made it into the list. It's not a mindblowing start for MS's new console, but it sure will help it during this cold winter ;)
