ChartSpot: March 2007
God of War II sees heavenly sales, GRAW2 and Guitar Hero II rock the 360 top 10, MotorStorm revs up PS3 sales.
Though it saw a decline in PC game sales, the five weeks of the industry-tracking NPD Group's "March" reporting period--which lasted from March 4 to April 7--saw the good times roll on other platforms. Leading the pack of non-PC titles was God of War II, Sony Computer Entertainment America's glowingly reviewed sequel to its 2005 action game hit. The game sold 833,000 copies in three weeks and is well on its way to rival sales of the original God of War, which landed in 13th place for the "month."
As far as the platforms formerly known as next-generation consoles, the Xbox 360 came out on top, with five games in the NPD Group's top 20 games of the month. Foremost among them was Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, which sold 394,000 copies from its March 6 release until the end of the month. Right behind it was Guitar Hero II, which moved 291,000 in the four days after its Xbox 360 debut. Also making the top 10 were the 360 MLB 2K7 (165,000 copies sold) and Def Jam Icon (148,000 copies sold).
The 360's rivals were also represented in the top 20. MotorStorm, the racing game touted so often by Sony Computer Entertainment's Phil Harrison that its very mention became a drinking game among 21-and-over gamers, had a solid debut, selling 199,000 units. No doubt boosted by the fact it came with a Wii Remote, Wii Play sold 273,000 copies during Julius Caesar's least favorite month.
NPD's March reporting period also marked a milestone in the console cycle. Namely, it is the first month that NPD stopped providing rankings for Xbox and GameCube. NPD reps assured GameSpot that the industry research firm is still monitoring sales of games on both platforms, but felt the time was right to desist updating the games press on said data, given that both platforms are no longer produced.
On the PC charts, the song remained largely the same. As is all too often the case, World of Warcraft and the Sims 2 exchanged places in the top slot. The latter's Seasons expansion pack was the month's most popular PC game, with the former's first expansion pack, the Burning Crusade, close behind it. However, there was a new kid on the block. The regular edition of Electronic Arts' Command & Conquer 3 debuted in fourth place on the PC charts, with the deluxe Kane edition following two slots behind it.

Nice. Expected GOW2 to sell well but doing even better.
* raising glass * Here's to the XBOX and the GameCube. They will both go down in the history of gaming as great consoles. Their time was too brief.
how to play with 360 :D:D
Wow the PS2 is still going strong as an old system while the PS3 is going to bite the dust next year
@Yuck_Foo I am talking about the graphic power of PS2, not sales.
hey luffy tubby it came out on pc in 2003 so its actually 4 years old go back to scholl mate.
hey luffy tubby it came out on pc in 2003 so its actuallt 4 years old go back to scholl mate.
just wait and see and i rest my case and people are going to continue saying this until it actually happens and incase you didn't know its for the PS3's success
The word GOD really does go with the game itself.
HOLY CRAP! Check out the PC sales.. Halo is still hanging in there at 20!! LOL! Halo is almost 7 years old... OMFG. And Burning Crusade, HAHAHAHAHA...
God of war 2 rocks!!!!!
Nintendo has the right idea. Start basic and let the customers dictate the direction for the system(like the DS). the proof is in the numbers.
I am not hating on the PS2, it is a great system. but when sony has invested so much into the PS3, and it's collecting dust on the shelves, thats bad news for the Sony Corp. How long do you think they can ride the PS2? and games like GOW2 don't come around every day(or even every year). This is a good thing because I think Sony needs to eat a nice big slice of humble pie. No more over charging customers for their products just because their name. lets hope that message filters down to all their products.
Heres a link to the petition being sent to M$ and EPIC to make the GOW maps free. http://www.petitiononline.com/gowmp/petition.html
The ps2 is doing all the work!:D
go 360! def jam rulez:D
Wow , do i read that correctly .. only 1 PS3 game in the top twenty ? al least sony is still making money hand over fist with the ps2
Yep GOW 2 definitely earned it's place on top. That game rules.
Some people don't know when to shut up. I look forward to Shadowrun for 360 at the end of this month.
Go God of War II ! Awesome game! Hmmm...Maybe not a PS3 fanboy, but sounds like a PC fanboy to me...
you know what? PS3 sucks, Xbox 360 sucks more, and WII sucks the BIGGEST, PC rocks, it has all the games and more in better graphics an everything. The PC gets all th best games, but if i was to chose i would chose the ps3 which i already own, i can see a great future for it! NO IM NOT A PS3 FANBOY!!!
"That's what ppl has been saying since the ps3 release, and see, nothing have happened'till now. IMO only 1 game in top 20 for the ps3 is already a failure, same happens with the GC, and all the fanboys were saying "You may say Nintendo is failing with the GC but this company looks into the future so soon the GC should be on top of the charts.", the same comment and see, the GC never got to the top. PS3 is NOT going to be at top NEVER, its obvious, now the Nintendo and Microsoft fanboys are the one laughting at this, past gen were Sony and Microsoft, its gonna be like that forever cuz none of the 3 companies are gonna fall, they have enough money to keep them alive for many years. So fanboys, just SHUT THE H*LL UP and enjoy the videogames, nubs." what games? oh the old gen ones, anyone judgeging this war after just 5 months is just silly.
kratos: I pity the full who says ps2 is dead!
BILLNYE6983 The reason why PS2 games will continue to beat the more advanced and more expensive newer systems is because of its enormous installed base. But considering Sonys' base, the 800,000 plus units of GOW2 that were sold is actually quite pitiful.
GOW2 owns all... yay sony
This isn't shocking, GOW2 is better than anything else out there on the current gen consoles, that's what's funny too, as much as everyone say's that Sony is stupid for focusing on the 'last gen' they are still outselling the current gen, and that's why I like how Sony does it, I know tons of people who still have only a PS2, GC, or Xbox, but the one's with Xboxs and GCs are pissed because they have no more games to play. Since when do people care more about business practices than treating the customer nicely, cause your weird if you would rather have had Sony just kill the PS2 on the day the PS3 launched, it's only a good thing if you ask me. 6/20 of the games on the list are PS (2 or 3) so how is Sony somehow getting 'killed'? I mean I find it more lame that the 360 that some of you people love to praise endlessly is getting beat totally by GOW2, a PS2 game, and even the original GOW is beating Crackdown, which is a fairly recent 'current gen' release. Not 360 bashing just saying all you people do (on all sides) is twist facts and opinions so that to some idiot they appear to be 100% truthful, why can't you just stop?
GunGriffin this is the MARCH charts, of course pokemon diamond and pearl aren't on it. They came out in APRIL. READ THE HEADLINES BEFORE U POST.
wow, its amazing how many people on here hate the PS3. like people saying they have already lost the next-gen war and it hasn't even been out for a year. you people make me sick. true gamers? i think not. too many xbox fan boys on this site.
For one things this chart dose not take into account the resent release on Pokemon Daimond and Pearl on the DS Nintendo just reported that They both have sold over one million copies in the first five days of them going on sale world wide. Thats a huge number for 5 days after release. I think GameSpot needs to update their books agian and quick or else people are going to get the wrong ideas.
[This message was deleted at the request of the original poster]
Can u smell what the PS3 is cooking....a major price drop. It worked for Gamecube, It might work for sony.
THIS COMMENT PAGE IS SUPPOSED TO BE FOR THE SALES OF THE GAMES!!!!! NOT FOR WHICH CONSOLE IS BETTER OR NOT (FANBOYS = NOLIFE)

Glaceya: "There was not one PSP title up there and only one ps3 game. It's safe to say that sony has lost the next gen (handheld and console) race....they arent just losing the race they are being lapped by Microsoft and Nintendo I wonder how long they can survive off of PS2." Couldnt agree more
Glaceya: "There was not one PSP title up there and only one ps3 game. It's safe to say that sony has lost the next gen (handheld and console) race....they arent just losing the race they are being lapped by Microsoft and Nintendo I wonder how long they can survive off of PS2." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Agreed. We are watching the downfall of Sony this gen.:)
s_king7 your thinking isn't spot on either "The PS2 is not meant to be in the top 20 hell not in the number 1 spot i mean its friends the XBOX and Gamecube are not." True but that's Sony's stupidity, GoW 2 should never have only come to PS2, either just the PS3 or both consoles. "so for it to be there i See that as a problem for the XBOX 360, Wii and maybe the PS3. The system was meant to be doing what its doing today 7 years ago which it did but its not meant to be doing it now but it is." I think you have it backwards, its a major problem for the PS3, not a problem for the XBOX 360 and the Wii. A company's last gen console should not outsell their current gen console in hardware and game sales ever. This is poor planning on Sony with game production. Microsoft and Nintendo are turning profits. And if Sony can only compete with them using the PS2 rather the the PS3 then they'll be a game developer shortly, because the PS2 is an inferior machine to the Wii and 360 by far.
I bet there would be a lot more God of War 2 copies, but of course not everyone is alowed to get M rated games, or in that fact M rated games with nudity. but if everyone could get it, i'm pretty sure it would of sold over a 1 Million copies!
There was not one PSP title up there and only one ps3 game. It's safe to say that sony has lost the next gen (handheld and console) race....they arent just losing the race they are being lapped by Microsoft and Nintendo :) I wonder how long they can survive off of PS2.
Why is Gamespot always so late with this.
With over 110 million units worldwide, a low cheap price and thousands of software titles to be purchased, why wouldn't it? It also doesn't have any competition as both Xbox & Gamecube are no longer being produced. I still like playing my PS2 and have lots of games I still need to complete. ______________________________________________________ enoslives7 PS2 still owns the competition.
Wow. XBox 360 had 4 titles in the top 10. Not bad. There's no suprise that God of War 2 is on the top of the list. This game should sell between 3-4 million copies after all is said and done. There are over 100 million PS2 out there, so I'm a bit surprised it didn't sell a lot more.
Oblivion isn't up on the chart not only because those who owned a good enough PC or xbox360 played it, it's just not a game for the majority of PS3 gamers. heck, if PS3 gamers are really into Oblivion type of western RPG, they'd have bought an XBOX360 already. The fact is, most poeple can't afford both systems, (or a great high end PC), so they pick their fav. console that would offer their fav. games. Oblivion is abviously not the fav. game tpe for PS3.
I'm thankful I can enjoy God of War 2 on my PS2... but I think they shoulda went ahead and made it for the PS3 to help PS3 sales. I mean, I know they said they did it on the PS2 so more people could play it and what not, but I still am pulling for the PS3 in this console war and think that woulda helped. Can you imagine a next gen God of War???
PS2 is so awesome it's hilarious. Even Sony is trying to dethrone it now.
sja28 and everyone else not thinking The PS2 is not meant to be in the top 20 hell not in the number 1 spot i mean its friends the XBOX and Gamecube are not. so for it to be there i See that as a problem for the XBOX 360, Wii and maybe the PS3. You may say Sony is failing with the PS3 but this company looks into the future so soon the PS3 should be on top of the charts. Yeah the XBOX 360 will be around i mean its got GREAT titles coming out for it so no doubt. and of course the Wii. Don't get excited seeing only 1 PS3 game in the top 20
PS2 still owns the competition.
Wow Mario Kart still there?
violent Kratos is back
Kratos is back and tops all! \,,/
--smoothn00dle -- "seven years old hardware still kick @ss" ~~~~~~ Actually it's a 30ish million active install base that kicks the competition. After all the worst selling PS2 game can easily outsell a PS3 title and it's all about money. I am surprised that Oblivion for the PS3 is not up there (in the overall all standings)...guess it's true everyone has already played it.
