CES 2009: A Tour of the EA Sports Complex in PlayStation Home
EA Sports announced they were getting into the Home business--the PlayStation Home biz, that is--a few days ago and, today, I had a chance to check head over to the Sony booth today to get a look at the work-in-progress of the EA Sports complex and talk to some of the people behind its development...

EA Sports announced they were getting into the Home business--the PlayStation Home biz, that is--a few days ago and, today, I had a chance to check head over to the Sony booth today to get a look at the work-in-progress of the EA Sports complex and talk to some of the people behind its development.
As you might have seen, the EA Sports complex consists of a huge area to roam around in, and will be home to three minigames upon its release in a few months: golf, racing, and poker. Only racing looked to be working in the demo I saw--and the open-wheel cars looked promising at first, until I watched the actual race itself. As it turns out, the racing looks more akin to Mario Kart than anything else, and the F1-style rides are miniaturized. There's just one track to choose from, though if the racing proves to be popular, new courses, as well as purchasable upgrades for your car are a possibility.
The golf game wasn't working in the demo but I was told it will be a single hole, closest to the pin-style game, and players will be able to organize in foursomes to compete against one another. As you might expect, all three of the mini-games feature multiplayer support. That said, there's still tweaking to be done: for example, the developers are still trying to decide whether to make a normal race session consist of one race for up to eight players, or make it a two-heat race for as many as four players.
The poker game will feature several table types, with beginner's tables and higher stakes tables for more experienced (or less risk-averse) players. That said, you obviously won't be gambling real money, instead you'll be gambling fake currency--though the system will keep track of how much money you currently have in your avatar's possession, as well as your lifetime earnings (which will be used for leaderboard purposes).
After taking a tour around the complex, I had a few questions on my mind: namely with regard to the future of the space. Look out the virtual windows and you'll plainly see a soccer pitch, a football field and more. Producers told me that, while the space has room for EA Sports branded games to have a presence in Home, the actual implementation of those spaces will be handled by the teams that are actually making those games, not the team responsible for the "general" space on display at CES 2009.
I also asked about plans for interaction between the Home space and EA's community portal, EAsportsworld.com. The first step seems to revole around video--stuff you might see on EASW will likely find its way into the Home space, but expect to see more in the future. Producers told me that one possible idea would be to have athlete virtual appearance events in the EA Sports Complex. I'm not exactly sure who might want to attend something like that--but what do I know?
All of this leads me to my questions for you: What do you think of the EA Sports Complex in Home? Do you think this kind of thing has a future for sports games or games in general? What would you like to see in a feature like this?[This message was deleted at the request of the original poster]
Home is cool but I've seen and played ever thing they have starting to get a lil boring. can't wait to explore and try it out the new ea sports world looks great...............
the racing could be better, I was thinking more like 3d go carting, how a bout piant ball as well
All that Home needs at the moment is a bigger F***ing Bowling alley lol. I am sick of it everytime you go there all the lanes are FULL -.- GRRR@HOME lol but this looks alright. does anybody know when the game matchmaking system is going to become active?
that looks very very cool, i haven't really seen much point in home at the moment, it's an ok way to socialise through psn, but i'd rather when we booted up our consoles, it simply loaded onto hoome and from there we can do all the stuff we normally do, instead of using the XMB, or even have home as an optional alternative. Anyway onto the point, i think this will be a good start to home, ea sports doing poker, golf and racing. Poker will probably prove to be the most popular, i don't know why i think that, it's just a hunch...
only on the ps3 they are adding games to home i think mainly because everyone was dissapointed that it wasnt a game that they downloaded, but its better than anything 360 could do
it's still beta and having so many promises... I'm hoping little big planet room... and it'll be great to have a FINAL FANTASY room... come on square enix... I'd buy a final fantasy costume if you have it for sale in home... we could do cosplay without embarrassing ourselves... ahahaha
This is awesome. Only in PS3 that you could experience something like this.

Looks amazing.i look forward to exploring the home world
This is cool, Home's gonna really test companies to see if they know their own customers... and also get them to do some work to attract people into the space instead of just plastering rubbish on billboards or on the side of third-party webpages :) Wouldn't mind seeing game profiles, high scores and videos of Need for Speed in this area :D
looks cool
Poker!! =D
@ halokila... you make a good point and i understand that it IS an option... but who is the genius that put a price tag on a virtual couch? That's what upsets me... That's like playing metal gear solid, picking up a weapon, and drebin asking you to put in ur credit car number to use it..... sure i shouldn't complain cuz home is a free download and all... but with the constant bombardment of advertisements in home, their money is easily being made... which brings me back to the question... why the hell is there a price tag on a virtual couch!?!?!?
PS3 is finally pulling out something new and better then the rest.... i knew sony wouldn't let us down.. kudos to sony... proud to be a PS Maniac
nerds
i don't realy find home all that fun
Now i dont regret getting a PS3, everyone who has a 360 can brag all they want, but this right here is the best thing ever put on a platform. xbox can not top this. Copy the same idea? dont think so. I hope they let u use the same aviator you create on EA SPORTS WORLD in this place!
i like it trying to improve home great idea
Gotta agree with Aleones31, Home needs expanding, as it is right now, you can see what it has to offer in 20 min, then get bored right after that.
I really like what Home is doing now, its expanding, that's what it needs. This EA complex seems really fun and a really good experience for us Home users.
lots of jealous xbots spamming the thumb downs i see. Home is starting to look a bit better, i may install it one of this days.
home is amazing and will only get better
I agree with Mystoksor. PSHome would be truly great if it was a continuous experience like a full blown MMO, and you didn't have to DL each environment every time you went to one. I do see the problem with trying to have it all loaded onto the harddrive, however, so I guess we will have to make do. MAybe offer a complete HDD DL in the future?
awsome,football fans will like this.
Looks nice. Racing looks like would be fun. The more mini-games the merrier!
racing game looks like a sh1tty racing game from 1980, i think ill pass and stick to my cod4 and gta4
Judging from the video I'm guessing they're going to try make use of the plentiful sport fields outside. Home style football anyone? Anyways I'm really looking forward to this. That poker game's got my full attention
@ teewok nobody's forcing you to buy these things there just an option. hate it how people are complaining when it's an OPTION
not intrested in EA when is Ubi soft going to put a complex in HOME
HOME, needs this kind of stuff more often, to keep it fresh and new. Right now, I'm bored of home, but once this is out, I'm coming back and having more fun =D

This is good to see. I hope more developers start taking advantage of Home.
that looks cool i like playstation home but i think there needs to be more to do and more places in general
Looks amazing.
The poker game will be great.
dis is nice... i wish it comes out on tha 360
I have been saying since day 1. HOME won't be something worthwhile at launch, or even in first year if you want, but stuff like this is what is going to make HOME into something interesting and fun. Not for everyone but still many will enjoy it. Let's not forget you don't even need to download HOME if you don't like it you can even delete it. No one is forcing you to use it, it is there, it is free and will only get better and better. Thumbs up for HOME, this one looks great.
and as an added bouns, you get to explore the homes of every person recently laid-off by EA. and if you unlock enough EA hip hop points, you get an FMV of the CEOs laughing all the way to the bank. geewiz, i cant wait!
if home were a contiguous environment and not just a bunch of instances, this would be epic
i have the 360 but i'm buying A.S.A.P a ps3 because of the ps network
it's nice if you're able to find oponents for sports games
Looks nice.
I wish the 360 had something like this
This looks sick, i look forward to exploring the home world
