Third-person "re-imagining" of Atari classic arcade game will feature run-and-gun combat, tower-defense gameplay on Wii and 3DS.
Since being introduced in arcades in 1980, Centipede has appeared on a number of platforms, ranging from the Atari 2600 to the Xbox 360. Today, publisher Atari announced the game will be getting a new incarnation, courtesy of Centipede: Infestation for the Wii and 3DS.
Due out this fall from developer WayForward, Centipede: Infestation takes the vertical gameplay of the original game and turns it into a run-and-gun third-person shooter. Centipede: Infestation will have seven environments and 40 stages. It will feature two-player co-op on both platforms, with the 3DS version offering the mode via ad hoc multiplayer.
In the game, players will face off against the titular creatures, as well as spiders, beetles, grubs, caterpillars, moths, and unnamed "boss insects." Players will have a variety of weapons with which to battle the critters, including a lightning orb gun, nuke cannon, mine launcher, and freeze thrower. Defeated insects will leave behind various objects that offer temporary defensive measures.
Unlike the original, Centipede: Infestation will also have a storyline, which Atari describes as "a postapocalyptic action experience." Players will assume the role of Max, an orphaned teenager wandering through a bug-infested wasteland. Early on in the game, he meets an adolescent girl, Maisy, who is carrying a collection of seeds that could potentially turn the wasteland into a verdant paradise. The two join forces to plant gardens--and then fight off the huge insects that come calling to destroy them.
@iAmAbel Do you know who nintendo is? Because this is being made by atari. Back to the game it looks very bland. Wayforward may be doing it but they are know for their 2d games not 3d ones. The one I played on wiiware was ok, but this one is just not interesting enough for me. And my interest would drop more if this was a full priced game on either system.
This seems like something to keep an eye on.Maybe.We'll see. @ jdog8888888 Yeah almost everything is a reboot, retelling,or sequel of something from way back when. But for the most part I'm enjoying it.Seeing some classics I never saw, seeing old friends amped up for the 2000s,and seeing less than impressive movies made cool. The only bad thing about it is that almost no one seems to be able to come up with truly new ideas anymore.
OK seriously comon nintendo. I wana see a Super maario sunishine 2 3D Luigi Mansion 2 3D Im getting tired of remakes...
That doesn't look like Centipede at all. If your gonna remake a classic then base it off the original! Take the Asteroid game for the PS1 now that was alot of fun.
I was quite hooked in this Centipede in 98. http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/centipede/index.html?tag=result%3Btitle%3B3 But this one doesn't look the same.
The 80s are being raided. All the classic games and movies are being remade. New Pac man, new top gun (movie), Transformers, Indiana Jones, Space Invaders... The list goes on and on..
Dude! That looks like the one back in the day for Dreamcast. My brothers and I could never get very far at all. Haha, hard games ftw.
ooh, this looks like a lot of fun! 3DS is coming up with some interesting games...I said I wouldn't get it...eh...now I'm not sure...if there are attacking butterflies in this game, though, then I'm out...
I wish they'd just do a Centipede game for the Wii that lets the player control the ship like an aiming reticule. Just a simple point and shoot setup but layer and layers of complexity. This game looks more like Frogger than Centipede. It really wasn't a very good trailer. You don't get to see enough of the actual Centipedes.
I can't think of any reason why we need this game. It looks the same, infact worse than any game you can buy on the PSN or Marketplace right now.
the first centipede 3d game released for playstation/pc kicked more ass than i believe this "re-imagining" of a third person shooter ever will: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUqFEqFzg0o&feature=related
Yeah this looks nothing like Centipede. I mean the only similar thing I can see is that there is a centipede in it.
That don't look like Centipede but I must say that it still looks pretty fun. I'll be watching reviews before I decide to buy though.
@FlamingFury The explanation for your 2nd comment is because the game isn't being titled, "The Human Centipede: Infestation".
1 - That's not Centipede at all. It looks nothing like a space invaders rip-off 2 - If it's not that centipede, why aren't people being tied to each others anuses amidst horrific dialogue and a plot that makes no sense?
