Chief technical officer of id Software interested in motion-sensing peripheral, but doesn't know what kind of game he'd make with it.
At his QuakeCon keynote session in August, id Software chief technical officer John Carmack repeatedly mentioned his struggle to balance all the projects he wants to do with the time he needs to do just a few of them well. He cleared one of those projects off his slate this week with the release of an iOS version of Rage, but the list of things he'd like to do isn't getting any shorter.
In an interview with Joystiq yesterday, the developer confessed, "I have an itch to make a Kinect title for Xbox Live." However, Carmack doesn't have a solid idea of what that title would look like, telling the site he couldn't use Kinect "for our real games," or for their style of first-person shooters.
Carmack's quotes suggest he has warmed up to the idea of Kinect games since his QuakeCon address. In that speech, Carmack downplayed his interest in working with motion-sensing controllers, saying most of his ideas focus on output rather than input. While he said id Software didn't have plans to use motion controls in its games, he added that he expected someone else to make something spectacular with the technology.
It isn't just his own duties on Rage and the next version of the id Tech engine that could keep Carmack from getting around to working on Kinect. Beyond his workload for id Software, Carmack devotes as much time as he can spare to his own Armadillo Aerospace. Carmack established the upstart rocket company eight years ago and put more than $4 million of his own money into getting it off the ground. The company has since managed to turn a profit, but its main goal remains promoting space exploration by developing cheaper, reusable rocket technology.
Oh its fun to see how short sighted many of you seem to be. Even Carmack has said someone will make something amazing for Kinect and after playing with it for awhile wants to make something himself for it. But you guys keep tellin yourselves how bad Kinect is LOL
Move, Kinect, battle of controllers. What I feel is, that these controllers will be only effective on certain kind of games only. Move will be successful in sports games that uses equipment and shooting games. RPG, adventure, racing and puzzle games fails here. Kinect will be successful in dancing and certain sports games that involves the whole body experience. RPG, adventure, racing and puzzle games fails here too.

He should resurrect Leisure Suit Larry for Kinect. That would be very interesting with the motion sensing. ;)
I'm not interested at all in using Kinect to entirely control a game, but integrate it with a control pad for most controls, and add some cool gestures for off the cuff special moves here and there with Kinect, and I can see it being a lot of fun to use for sure.
@ThePowerOfHAT Spot on the games for kinect just don't apeal to me but if they made black and White3 with kinect support that would I would seriously consider picking that up

This is pretty much what all developers seem to be suggesting these days. And it's exactly why Kinect has yet to impress me. Until I start seeing Kinect being the primary control for a major title, I'm not gonna consider it. I'm still of the opinion that Molyneux owes us Black & White 3 with Kinect controls. That'd be sheer brilliance.
Makes me wonder if ID will set/raise the bar in gameplay along everything else (except story) with RAGE. Doom 3 was an example of that (even if I enjoyed it). Still, I won't deny ID's huge contribution to videogames since the early 90's.
The nerd who deserves more gratitude for the success of games such as Halo and Call of Duty than their publishers who are in bed with one another anyway, is the nerd who will clear the fog and sail you to calm waters. Suggest, speculate, and discuss what you want, but id will continue to push the envelope, set the bar, and make you wish you remembered your adult daipers when you play Rage for the first time. They got it, they always had it, and don't need Kinect, motion control, or anyone elses I.P. to make what they're cooking taste gooooood!
@freestyler_85. LOL, you're right! Give us a proper Doom game, dude. Doom 3 was ok, but it was no Doom game. I want to see large open spaces with waves of enemies coming at me at the same time, not only 2-3 through narrow corridors.
I don't have/want a 360 of the Kinect, but as I was asking myself that a game like this would be nice to see.
I have a better idea. make Kinect works on PC, and let pc developers do the magic without restriction and Microsoft pretending to be a "family guy" . I think Kinect can work well in the adult industry.
How about you are inside this massive robot in the FAR future which you make it move by specific stanses and all the robots fights with giant metal swords or plasma swords or something? Now, before you press "dislike" think for a moment about it!
Changing an existing game like Rage to support Kinect makes little sense. Here's hoping for a new IP desined specifically for it.
the smarter way is to make Rage engine supports Kinnect in an intuitive way. Than, he can let everyone else to think about what to make using his engine as a platform. He really need to understand he is a tech guy, and should focus on tool, middleware, platform layer.
As always many people got butt-hurt by statement. He is the programming God and if in future he makes kinect game it will be lag free
Making good Kinect games is going to take some thinking outside of the proverbial box (I hate that box!) It is a profoundly different interface from the controller and even from the Wii/Move style motion-controllers.
I think a lot of old school game developers like Carmack long for the good ole days where it took 1 or 3 people to make a game in their garage for about a year and then make millions of dollars from it. Which is why he's doing a lot of programming for the mobile devices like iphone and ipad. As engines and graphics become more complex, it requires more people, work, time, and money to make a AAA title. But a casual game requires almost nothing with nothing to risk as well. Wii Fit costs next to nothing to produce and has made as much money as Call of Duty. I can see him making a FPS or Doom game using Kinect that combines fitness with gaming.
Carmack is more of an engineer than a game designer. I'm sure he can make some great software for Kinect that's very stable and precise, but whether id makes something fun and creative with it, is debatable.
@GodGundamNT1 Irrelevant? The guy's celebrated for making modern FPSs possible. And STILL does great work. And when we're all gone, his titles all stand a bigger chance of being remembered than... halo...

Wow... nice to know some folks don't know who John Carmack is or what he does. Hint: he writes graphics engines. And unlike Epic? He's open-sourced his old ones. Be awesome if more companies did that.
