Back in 2006 when downloadable content was still a largely unknown and unproven business model, Bethesda Softworks elicited both sneers and jeers with its $2 horse armor for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Now it is 2009, and Capcom has decided to revisit the question of what the upper threshold is for how much gamers are willing to pay for purely aesthetic accoutrements.

This week, Capcom delivered news on the first round of downloadable content for Street Fighter IV. Beginning day-and-date with the game's launch on February 17, Capcom plans to roll out alternate costume packs for each of the 25 World Warriors. Packs will be released at a rate of one per week, and each set will cost an eyebrow-raising $3.99 (320 Microsoft points), or $20 for the lot.

Capcom also has in the works a round of free--not to mention substantive--DLC. Dubbed the Championship Mode Expansion Pack, the free DLC adds in a Replay mode in which players can record and distribute their fights online; two new points systems for skill ranking; and a tournament matching system, in which players are pitted against one another based on their skill level. Capcom did not reveal when the Championship Mode Expansion Pack would be available.

For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of Street Fighter IV. The release schedule for the premium alternate-costume packs is listed below.

2/17 - Brawler Pack: Zangeif, E. Honda, Rufus, El Furete, and Abel
2/24 - Femme Fatale Pack: Chun-Li, Cammy, Sakura, Rose, and C. Viper
3/3 - Shoryuken Pack: Ryu, Ken, Akuma, Gouken, and Dan
3/10 - Shadowloo Pack: Seth, M. Bison, Sagat, Balrog, and Vega
3/17 - Classic Pack: Guile, Dhalsim, Fei-Long, Blanka, and Gen

Man, I bought SFIV 2 months ago. Now I hear about (possibly) new version of SF with 10 additional characters, additional content for additional money. This sux. Sux and blows, actually.

Nice of Crapcom to charge its loyal customers for something that's already on the disc waiting to be unlocked. What a crock of BS.

No way am i going to pay 20$ for all the characters alternate costumes. If anything I'll just buy the costumes for my favorite characters. On a lighter note, the replay editor sounds cool.

Heh. Just thought I'd toss this out there for the PS3 SFIV players: Capcom's talking about having free unlockable outfits for Home by just playing SFIV. How ironic.

You're the only one being annoying, seriously, if you don't want people to point out they know they are being cheated then don't read it, no ones forcing you to complain about people rightfully complaining, it's not like it changes your opinion of the game, let them do what they want, logical thinking or anger venting.

if you ask me, its prettty screwed up to talk about DLC
BEFORE THE EFFING GAME IS OUT! And then tell everyone the dlc is read the day the game is released. I hope nobody buys this to shove it back in their faces

This is absolute ridiculous! If you really want the whole game experience, this means that you will pay over $200,- to get it right!
    game + TE stick + alternate-costume = $60 + $150 + $20 = $230!!!

    Who will donate me?

  • slipknot61174

    Posted Feb 9, 2009 5:42 pm GMT

That said, I um... *ahem* I still want that Femme Fatale pack... But that's where I'm drawing a damned line!!!

Extra outfits for $20 in today's jacked up economy? Are the fine folks at Capcom smoking something? Sure, I'll grant you, you're paying less than a dollar an outfit what with there being 25 alternates. But still... you're paying a minimum of $60 for the game, $80 if you have to have it "collector's edition". The other expansion pack sounds awesome, and more games should go that route, but paying a good $100 for this game is just retarded. And I totally agree with MightyMuna: This is only going to get worse. Expect to pay for bonus characters on Tekken 6, alternate costumes on Wolverine Origins and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, extra word fonts on FFXIII.

I might as well go get myself some new costumes instead... This will be the first time in SF history to buy costume for the characters, personally I do not think its a good idea, what a ripped off~!

  • cajunstrike

    Posted Feb 9, 2009 10:37 am GMT

Agreed. Alternate costumes should have been accessed as an unlockable feature instead as a pay per option. Strange, indeed.

  • MightyMuna

    Posted Feb 9, 2009 9:22 am GMT

this is milkage. PS4, SFV, only Ryu will be on disc. purchase Ken, Chun-Li, Guile, Zangief, etc on PSN.

seriously, please do not purchase this, if we do, expect more developers to follow this route, Namco will do this for Tekken 6, etc. Please dont.

I don't mind paying for content, but the pricing scheme is horrible. The whole lot in one bundle for less would be more reasonable.

    Posted Feb 8, 2009 11:39 pm GMT

how about you go suck one Capcom. This crap should be in that game. Great now everyone turning like value, charging for stuff that should be in the game in the First place. Then you add not all the alt are the good looking in the first place.

  • lilarnez4

    Posted Feb 8, 2009 11:34 pm GMT

well, if youre getting the collectors edition, youll get alt costumes for 5 characters. hope that eases some of the pain....

Looking forward to buying this game, but $20 for costumes? Aw hell naww!!

  • akechi419

    Posted Feb 8, 2009 7:24 pm GMT

20 dollars are you kidding me? same as what i did with soul caliber (yoda/vader) i will pass on playing dress up with street fighter, wheres the video game nerd where you need him, he needs to throw a fireball at the capcom.

  • Hillsy_

    Posted Feb 8, 2009 7:15 pm GMT

Might as well have an 'insert coin slot' attached to our 360's or PS3's Capcom eh? I have to agree, definitively a loss of respect here. Next they will be charging for us to take a piss whilst the game is on pause...

  • OliverTwister

    Posted Feb 8, 2009 2:30 pm GMT

$20 for alt costumes that were expected to be in the game? I'll buy a White-T and some pants at Walmart instead.

  • bluefishhead

    Posted Feb 8, 2009 1:51 pm GMT

that is ricidulous 3.99 for some different costumes, and @dejafua, if you had bothered to read the article you would see that it is not $3.99 per character, but there are packs of costumes, ffs some poelpe are so stupid, its good that the "championship mode" thing is free though, unlike skate 2's ripoff camera pack, grrrr

  • dejafua

    Posted Feb 8, 2009 12:24 pm GMT

$3.99!!! Dang, that sucks!! so it'll cost about $100 extra just for alternate costumes?? fncking rip off!!! I was all psych'd about the game but not so much now!! DANG CAPCOM!! got two te sticks and ce pre-ordered too!! greedy bastards!! its a alternate COSTUME!!

  • Hillsy_

    Posted Feb 8, 2009 10:40 am GMT

    @dragonps

More like, 40-50 on a game, then a Street Fighter joypad/joystick (20-30) depending on your preference; as the controller will be more comfortable and easier to use. And they also release these packs just before and after the game is released, why not include it in the game.... Oh no, we want all your money.. They know what they are doing...

  • zombey1333

    Posted Feb 8, 2009 10:31 am GMT

I'm hoping that there's more than one alternate outfit for each character in these packs, i'm not shellin out cash for nothin

  • dragonps

    Posted Feb 8, 2009 5:59 am GMT

We spend £40-50 on a game and then if we want the "full" game we have spend even more! It's outrageous that we have to pay these prices. Ok i understand that it's a choice but think about it, it's not really a choice to a young teen who simply must have the DLC.

This whole DLC thing has got to stop, it's not fair on us the consumer.

I'm not really interested in super diverse costume selection, but I have to give props to Capcom for at least offering some nice extras right off bat. And that other DLC doesn't sound half bad either

  • Henninger

    Posted Feb 7, 2009 3:42 pm GMT

Capcom just lost some respect from me with this 1. Just like Namco lost respect with the Yoda/Darth Vader download last year. Paying money 4 costumes is ridiculous.

  • Raisuke

    Posted Feb 7, 2009 11:31 am GMT

Oh yeah. PS3 version would technically be saving 5 cents.

  • Raisuke

    Posted Feb 7, 2009 11:30 am GMT

Not really. Whether you buy them all together or separate, you're going to spend exactly 1600 points.

  • Mandalore_15

    Posted Feb 7, 2009 11:09 am GMT

If you buy them separately you save 5 cents.

  • metalkid9

    Posted Feb 7, 2009 10:32 am GMT

it sucks cuz ppl will still buy these and capcom will still make money off of these so unfortunately I don't think theyre gonna stop charging consumers for these little things that were supposed to be already in the game either through achievements, trophies or unlockables or even a free dlc. It would actually be more smart of an idea if it was a free dlc because it would actually give them another chance to advertise the game and attract people to buy this game and make MORE money. I mean look at burnout paradise's bike pack

  • AzureWind213

Toe Jam has got the right idea. Where's a good old Konami Code when you need it these days?!

  • Cthulad

    Posted Feb 7, 2009 9:18 am GMT

Getting the short end of the stick. Game is 69.99 in Canada, and then they want even more for an alternate costume. Wow I'm still thinking that gamers really need to take a look at this, and pass it up. The game DLC should not be that expensive. And if you wanted all the costumes you have to wait till March 17th for one low price of $20. Now that's a deal.

Gosh... $20 bucks seems awefully steep for just outfits (Only 2 or three I am actually excited about). Well to each their own, if people want the costumes bad enough i guess they will have to drop an Andrew Jackson.

$60.00+ for the game (more if you buy the special edition), $40.00+ for a control ($80.00 if you need two, even more for the real fancy ones) and on top of that, $20.00 for costumes? i'm going to need a bailout after this game, time to call washington (not really, cause i'm only buying the game and you should too)

Well the free DLC is good stuff. I was wandering if you could record your fights online. I was actually thinking about recording one myself but now that they will add this this will save me the trouble. Not buying the extra costumes though.
