Slaughtering zombies is often an arduous, even overwhelming, task far better suited for two or a whole team of individuals. Playing to this end, Capcom designed Resident Evil 5 around cooperative gameplay, letting players team up to lay waste to infected African shantytowns. But, really, when that murderous zombie-killing bloodlust takes hold, who's to say who is friend or foe. For those who agree, Capcom has delivered.
The publisher has announced that the RE5 Versus mode is now available for purchase through Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. Priced at $4.99 (400 Microsoft points), Versus mode lets up to four players compete in two different competitive game types. Survivor's Rule plays out much like a traditional deathmatch game, pitting individuals or two-on-two teams against one another, while Slayer's Rule has players scoring points as they hunt down Majinis.
Some may think that charging $5 for a competitive mode that nowadays comes standard in most games could be considered crass. Capcom disagrees. "Although Versus mode makes use of the assets that exist in the game, the functionality is not currently in the game and is above and beyond the initial scope of Resident Evil 5," the publisher told UK gaming news site CVG.
Check back later today for GameSpot's full review of Resident Evil 5.

@Crazy_Guns: You're absolutely right lol! what a metaphor there! except, u can't smack the "vendor" in his face (Capcom) and raise a public issue for people to stand with you coz the "vendor" will actually have excuses and arguments ready for use to defend themselves. One weepy fruit vendor is one thing, and one giant, popular corporation is another. Plus, u kno how the financial downturn hits everybody hard on the face today, so many developers actually gave it a thought to make extra money based on popular franchises. take Bethesda's expansion packs, each for about 600pts, i dont remember. And people said these packs were a little too short.... I would see it like this: last year, the fruit vendor used to sell 4 peaches, 4 apples and 4 bananas in one basket for $5. now he's unusually one basket containing 4 bananas for $2, one basket containing 4 apples for $2, and another basket containing 4 peaches for $2. And u get to choose which basket to buy. Get it?
Yea! and charge us next time for unlocking Chris's voice in the game, eh? 400 pts are huge for this thing! i could buy an expansion pack with that!
$5 is not a lot of money, compared to the $60 you paid for the game and the $400 you paid for the system... but wait, weren't games $50 last generation? and $25 before that? The price of games has kept going up but it was always because production costs increased. Honestly, I have yet to see much improvement over graphics and gameplay from ps2 to ps3. Definitely not $10 a game worth! There are exceptions, but they are few and far between. Now I got Goldeneye for $25 dollars back in my day, and that had a every mode you would ever need! Alright Sony, you got our $400 for the giant black box that has yet to live up to its, hype, you got $60 for one of the 5 games that have come close to looking like your demo vids released A YEAR AGO! But go ahead, draw another $5 worth of blood. Im already $460 in the hole with this crappy system, what's $5 to make the best of it!?!
First off, this is a free country where freedom of speech is accepted. If anyone has a problem with what capcom is doing they can freely express themselves. I don't see why they would charge extra. On the day I got the game(about a day or two after release date) they were already talking about a versus mode. It probably would suck majorly seeing as you cant shoot and move at the same time.$5 ain't nuthin. Anybody with the game and internet service can pay that. Its them charging for something they really shouldn't have. I wanted to see what the versus mode is really about. But I feel it really isn't worth it. Many people are going to pay that money and end up not playing the game as much as they wanted. I played the co-op on line and got tired of it the same day. It isn't any different than having someone next to you playing the game. And I don't care what anyone says. Versus mode was already thought out before they released the game. Honestly, does anyone think a versus mode didn't cross their minds when they came up with re5. Its not that farfetched. You don't play games online to battle a computer. You play online to battle other people. So anyone defending capcom for charging money to compete online must be a few sandwhiches short of a picnic. I've spent money on routers, modems, coaxial cables and splitters to enjoy my internet access to the fullest. Not to mention a brand new tv. So i feel i can say anything i want about capcom. I was there gaming when the 1st re came out. I'm here for this one, but not versus mode. Just seems a tad bit much for the standard in todays gaming. I know for a fact that socom online blows re5 out the water, and they ain't chargin for nothin so far.
Okay i guess i understand that paying $5 for this is a little high but look at this capcom didnt have to create this and its a whole new feature towards the coop gameplay (which is getting a little old now). $3 would have been more sufficient but i dont mind beating the hell out of my friends in a 4 player deathmatch for $5 plus in slayer. So if you cant afford it dont comment and get back to us when you decide to get it.
I'd rather pay $5 for versus mode in RE5 than $10 for an extra few maps in COD WAW. It'll be worth the money and if you don't want to spend the money or if your going complain about paying more for versus...then don't buy it. Freaking kids today, they think things should be given to them. Go ask mommy or daddy for the money kid.
chill out everyone the real thing is that we gamers have to get the value for 60 bucks which we spent on re5 so if we don't pay 5$ plus taxes we will suffer and cap com producer is a sucker for not putting this content on disc ,it should have been free though but they wont listen to us so we gamers have to think about ourselves so based on that i suggest you pay so that we can play together and enjoy
Im sorry if i offended anyone but it jus seems like people r making a big deal. and capcom has to make money someway. remember people everythings not going to be free
We won't even go bankrupt paying $5. Again, its not the "PRICE" we are complaining about! Its what Capcom "DID"! Its the content they're charging for. Maybe if they didn't charge for the "UNLOCK CODES" for the difficulty of Megaman or the extra customs in SF4, there will be less complaints.
oh my god, not $5. guess i dont get to go to college now. Seriously, it's not like you're gonna go bankrupt. You people treating the whole situation like it's your life savings down the tube.
@harinder1827: What servers exactly? That's BS. Most games on consoles run P2P, not on servers. Even then, that's what XBL and PSN is for.
In order to enjoy the real game we have to pay capcom 5$ ,i have a friend in capcom and he says that its the cost for server maintainance so lets pay these suckers so that we can get value for our money
This really hasn't been released yet has it? I'll wait for gamer reaction before deciding to buy this apparent rip off or not. If you can't beat 'em.....give 'em your money and beat other people who bought the game and are now playing it by shooting their brains out. Everybody wins. :)
While this is quite the sham, most of you will be disappointed to hear I will be buying this, simply because I do enjoy enjoy RE5's extra modes, like Mercenaries. RE5's Versus mode will also be enjoyable, hence why no one has brought that into question. Anyway, point is, BS or not, I, like other people, will be buying it- though I commend you guys out there for taking this matter into into your own hands.
Yeah like I said over there I'd expect something like that on some fansite or something but not the official page for a large corporation like Capcom. They don't even attempt to be consistent. "I mod what I don't like this guy mods what he don't like QQ more n00bs". I even asked like 5 times what I did exactly that broke the rules, no real answer there. Capcom is pretty terrible to their customers I'll give them that much, no cares whatsoever for public image or customer satisfaction.
...which then also got modded. Yeah, the mods over there are pretty ridiculous. It's like they all had to take a fanboy-proficiency test to get their positions.
LOL, our posts got modded. How pathetic. Oh well, I wrote up a big argument against it and reposted them in the form of clickable links.
@AiKago: Here you go, made this for you... http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/1029/capcombegentle.jpg lol
@AiKago: Rofl, that's good. @weblinks: Be grateful for what? Being charged extra (on top of full purchase price) for something that comes standard from every respectable gaming company?
lol, just made this: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3664/3372100618_7593d26535_o.gif
This is the reason why im not going to even buy RE5... im not going to support companies that pull crap like this... RIP capcom
Boo Capcom ok so thats how i feel about them releaseing a DLC versus mode so soon after the game just came out. its not like they waited a few months then came out and said "this is what the fans told us they wanted". its a cheap trick. that said, i am of the mind that not every game is sutible for online multiplayer modes. like was anyone really convinced with MGS-online? i can see this been the same way, the core game play dosnt play like a multiplayer kinda game, ur never going to have that freedom of movement, the game mechanics to me just aint there. but of coures Capcom are looking at lil $$ signs in there eyes, its a easy tag on for those that want it and unfortunitly theres many people that will buy it just to have it and muck around with there mates for a bit, probly play it for a week or so then move onto somthing which was made for multiplayer, not just another horse armour incident.
Undeniably, this is a slimy move on Capcom's part but realistically - if it bothers you that much... wait for the price to drop before you buy it. Capcom should have offered it for free for download within the month of March.
@Nosnitsttam "Capcom is not the 1st company to do something like this ( $2 for HORSE ARMOR in Oblivion. ONE ITEM, TWO BUCKS. Those Guitar Hero 2 "track packs". 3 songs from GH1 for $5), they won't be the last." slash end quote. That's exactly the problem, and you are defending this practice. slash fail trend in gaming industry.
Quote from LBD_Nytetrayn ("Ask Capcom") : "I'm arguing that most of all this whining over paying a couple of bucks for something or other is overblown, and in many debates and arguments, concessions are often made in such cases. If you don't want that, then fine, withdrawn: I think you need to simply get over it. How about that? Man, try to be civil, try to give a little while arguing your own viewpoint, and then people like you have to show why the internet is full of jerks." Does anyone agree with this? If you do, I respect your opinion but I don't think you guys will ever understand why we are doing this. Oh yeah, I'll be joining the thread with the username: infinite07
i hope you can move and shoot. how much fun will it be to stop and prepare each time?! could be surprisingly lame eh, five dollars isn't much most of us waste that every day easily
so they had it ready, they just figurfed since it's "new" we should have to pay for it after buying their "new" game.....gluttons, absolute gluttons
@Edge_Maverick_X: Glad you understand, like I said I'm not trying to attack you only break through your "Capcom could never try and scam me!" defenses and help you see what's happening. I just don't want to see my favorite hobby (gaming) ruined over the next 5-10 years because Capcom is successful in this and other devs might start picking up on it and doing the same. I've always held some respect for Capcom in the past but lately they've really started to piss me off to where I just can't take it any more. It's the same thing with any company though, they exist to serve us, we pay their salaries, not the other way around. I mean even some of my favorite game companies like Valve, Blizzard, Bungie, Infinity Ward etc., I love them now but if they started pulling the same stuff I'd tell them the same thing and that is "Screw you!". Now if Capcom makes a public apology for their RE5, SF4, and MM9 schemes and promises never to do that again, then I will shut up and go back to putting in a good word for them. I don't care so much what a company has done in the past, I care what they're doing in the present and I'll treat them based on that, nothing else. Presently Capcom is dipping its proverbial fingers a little *too* far into the proverbial cookie jar.
@Crazy Guns:guess ill read through em.i guess i KINDA see where ur coming from, but since ive already decided to buy it since im itching for some re multiplayer(come on,who isnt?)ill stay on my side for now.but if they do that for RE6(yes,there is an re6)THEN ill start cussin some people out.lol.btw its not letting me copy or click those links, might wanna repost em.
@Edge_Maverick_X: Halo 1 never had an online component. Grand Theft Auto series never had ANY multiplayer of ANY kind until GTA IV. You can go down the list of games through the years that never had multiplayer before. Just because RE4 didn't have it doesn't mean it's right to charge EXTRA for it on RE5. And isn't this really what new games are for? To introduce new features? Why buy new games if you can't expect anything new? I'm not trying to insult you but come on, you're making it extremely difficult here, lol. Look at companies like Valve (just one example), they've been constantly releasing FREE stuff that's FAR above and beyond the original scopes of their games, and they're still doing extremely well financially. Even if Capcom does make a few bucks off of the gullible people who buy this thing, is it really worth the bad PR and lost customers? Really? I don't want to drag this out too much here as I'll only be repeating things I've already said on the official Capcom boards. I invite you to read through both of these threads *IN THEIR ENTIRETY* (there's a lot on the later pages) on the official Capcom boards: http://www.capcom-unity.com/ask_capcom/go/thread/view/7371/14013515/Message_to_Sven_and_the_other_Moderators http://www.capcom-unity.com/ask_capcom/go/thread/view/7371/14015429/Current_Capcom_DLC_Supporters_At_what_point_do_you_feel_there_is_a_problem The point is, this isn't something that they started working on 6 months after the game came out or something. This is something that was announced ON RELEASE DAY of the game. You can't tell me that couldn't have included that on the disc or released it as a free patch like most respectable game companies do, or that it was a new idea that they JUST happened to think of as the copies hit the shelves. They're milking their customers, and in the process neutering the amount of players online by dividing the playerbase, people who've bought it and people who haven't, yet everyone's already paid for the dang game. I mean do you really think this is right? I know you want to defend Capcom here because you like their games, I like their games too! They make great games, but the corporate bigwigs have been pulling some unbelievable DLC scams lately and it's unacceptable. Keep in mind, I'm not attacking *YOU* or fans of their games, I'm attacking Capcom for doing this, I am trying to argue in DEFENSE of consumers everywhere who are being ripped off. And honestly, $5 is not the deal here, if I didn't feel this was a scam I wouldn't have said anything. If I couldn't afford $5 could I afford my $400 Xbox 360? My $800 HDTV? My 20+ Xbox 360 games that were all bought brand new? My extra controller, wire hider, surge protector, TV wall mount etc. etc.? It's not logical to say I'm too cheap to afford $5, it's that Capcom is too cheap to be an honest business these last several months and I won't support them for it.
@ Crazy Guns:crazy, those games were MEANT to have multiplayer and vs,know what im sayin?like resident evil isnt really MEANT to be an online vs game, its just a bonus add on.THATS what im trying to get at here, that resident evil wasnt entirely MEANT to have a multiplayer, that its just a bonus for whoever wants it.like if it were a game like halo,it of course, would've had multiplayer included cuz come on,halo and multiplayer mix like pepperoni and cheese.....kind of....o.O.....like which resident evil game had a multiplayer vs mode?not ONE.see?
@Edge_Maverick_X You're absolutely right. We should just be grateful that game companies MADE games like Halo, Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Half-Life etc. We should be so grateful for their charity! After all it's not like we, the customers, pay their salaries or anything. They definitely should have charged an extra $5 for all the features in those games, especially multiplayer vs! After all, if you don't wanna pay extra (on top of the game's full purchase price, which is where they're meant to make their money) then "ur one cheap bastard its five bucks for cryin out loud!!". Also, the people actually MAKING these games, you know, the artists, animators, sound engineers, coders etc. are on fixed salaries and don't see a cent extra for this held back content. It's the corporate suits that make these decisions and they're the ones that profit from this fleecing. And yes, it is fleecing. As someone else said once, it's like going to the market and buying a fruit basket at full price, only to have the salesman yank the banana out at the last second and demand extra if you want it back (keep in mind you've already paid for the banana in the total cost of the fruit basket), his excuse is "Pffft you don't need the banana you've still got all those apples and peaches". YOU may pay him the extra, but you're getting ripped off. Even if you DON'T pay him the extra and let him take the banana, you're still getting ripped off because you've already bought it (especially in the case of SF4 costumes and MM9 difficulty level DLCs). *I* on the other hand will smack that fruit salesmen across the mouth and tell him "Screw you, you two-timing prick he's not seeing any of my money as long as he's going to be pulling scams like that, and not only will I NOT buy his fruit basket but I will also raise a huge public stink over his sleazy business practices. Capcom = Fruit Vendor. Fruit Basket = Game. Banana = Content that's been cut out or *locked* on the disc so that you have to buy it twice. It's the same principle, and if you can't understand it you truly are an ignorant fanboy and a tool.
@dmfreak:i AINT a capcom fanboy.im just grateful that they MADE resident evil, cuz frankly its one of the best franchises ever made.and if u dont wanna pay 5 freakin dollars for versus it than A:ur one cheap bastard or B:dont buy it instead of making a giant freakin fuss about it.its five bucks for cryin out loud!thats a game rental!and versus is worth WAY more than a game rental.
@Edge_Maverick_X: thanks a lot for making me repeat myself saying that you're an idiot and you don't understand what we are saying. go ahead support capcom and become one of their tools. or maybe you're just working from capcom. now get out capcom fanboy noob you fail.
@all of u noobs joining up against capcom: what the HELL is wrong with you ppl?first of all,if u dont even like resident evil or own it,you shouldnt be in this topic.Secondly,do you wanna know why capcom made versus mode a five dollar add on?because it was NOT an original feature for the game dumasses, its a bonus for whoever is smart enough to take it.so plz, shut the hell up with the complaining and let us TRUE resident evil fans enjoy our versus mode ya freakin noobs.and if u wanna form sides, then im getting on capcoms side for being AWESOME enough to GIVE us a versus mode for a RESIDENT EVIL GAME.CAPCOM AND RESIDENT EVIL FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!and you know what?im starting to think that the reason versus mode isnt on xbox live yet is becuz capcom delayed it cuz of all ur dam complaining!dont ruin it for us losers!
Publishers shouldn't price such nonsence, an expansion should be just 5 bucks. But that will never happened.!!! ):
I personally feel that Capcom wants to suck as much money out of the Resident Evil title as possible, purposely taking out versus mode to do so.
