What needs to be made is a coop beatemup open world game with power punch similar to spikeout in arcades and with destruction levels similar too stranglehold or red faction. Power punching someone threw a concrete pillar and watching it disintegrate would be awesoommmmeee. Think minority report on PS2 with better graphics, cooler destruction, coop and power punch.
Studio head at Ruffian Games releases video footage of playable prototype representing "pre-pre-pre-pre-pre-alpha quality."
Ruffian Games has released footage of a playable prototype of its canceled Streets of Rage remake. Studio head Gary Liddon uploaded the footage to his YouTube account today, following the video's leak. The video is embedded below.
"It was something we built very rapidly and represents pre-pre-pre-pre (lots of pres) pre-alpha quality. Even so, it has a certain charm," Liddon said.
Liddon would not say why the Streets of Rage remake was canned. He said like many developers, Ruffian Games works on numerous prototypes, only these are not normally shown in public.
The most recent appearance of the Streets of Rage franchise came through the $10 Sega Vintage Collection. This Xbox Live Arcade compilation pack launched in May this year and includes all three Streets of Rage games updated with achievements, online co-op, and support for Xbox Live leaderboards.
I'd definitely be willing to give this one a look just off the cred of "Streets of Rage." It makes me wonder how many other potentially good projects die in the lab...probably too many to count.
yea i loved streets of rage when i was a kid..lol scratch that i still play it now... a new 2d streets of rage would be awesome on consoles now..
Ruffian was this going to be a Sandbox game? This looks bad.
Rather have a redone Streets of Rage in HD.
This never seemed that great a game, but I am biased by antipathy toward arcade fighters in general and don't feel that very many were all that enjoyable or worthwhile to begin with...Certain quirks among signature mechanics didn't improve that at all...
I would recommend a Streets Of Rage remake to keep the side scrolling aspect of the originals. I really do not want to see another Final Fight Streetwise ...
I wish it would have gone through. One of these days Streets of Rage fans will get lucky. I will keep my fingers crossed for the completion of this project or following another. Us fans can wait longer can't we?
The above footage looked good, I loved the grapple attacks he did. Other then that, the fighting looked a bit slow-- but I can not judge a game that is not complete and will not be completed.
Sorry to hear about loss of funding, there was some talent on that staff for sure.
It was almost done. 99% completed and they lost funding.
Never mind, I am thinking of Battlefield 3... oh, that wasn't 99% either?
It makes me upset that this was dropped. Looks like I am going to finish my BOR Final Fight/Street of Rage game, and deploy it to the masses. I call it Final Rage.
Wow, thats still pretty impressive for a (pre x10) Alpha. I was wondering if someone had attempted bringing this back. If done right it could be a really fun game, but nowadays you would have to convert it into an open world/GTA clone though which could go either way...
The old games have the nostalgia, and are still great to play. However, there is no place in the market for this type of game anymore. You can dress it up however you like, it can never be like the originals, or original itself. Look at Sonic 4, which in my opinion, was a total failure.
That could have been amazing, but I can see how it hasn't progressed further. Maybe in the future eh?
Streets of Rage 4 would be my ideal game. Retro art style and music but with modern day control and options, 1980's themes, and lots of unlockables to encourage even more replay. Don't modernise features which do not require it.
this game was a badass back in the days men!would love to see the remake and how it pans out!give it a chance men!
Oh man, I have so much nostalgia for this game. The Genesis days were some of the best. Now what the hell is up with all these leaked game footage/Battlefront 3 teasing us they were 99% done with it? It must be a holiday bummer hitting us hard. Wonder which game will be next on the list.
You have to bring much more to the table now and days when it comes to remaking such classics, cause we've seen failed attempts in the past and we wouldn't want to see streets of rage on that list.
@solidsnake50 exactly!! why 3d one of the greatest 2d games of all time. and streets of rage must have remixed or original genesis music.
Sleeping Dog's combat system is better than this by a mile, and that's an open world game. Pretty sad.
For an alpha game, it doesn't look too bad. Hopefully they will come out with a proper SofR game soon.
Sega should remake it in a hand drawn 2D HD, remaster the music with a real orchestra and synthesizers, keep the button timings like it is on the genesis version of SOR2 and throw in a few extra moves.
Didn't look too bad - but I'd wish they would've kept it in it's 2.5D perspective. I'm also interested in new or HD remixes of Space Harrier, Thunder Blade, Alex Kidd, Fantasy Zone, or Golden Axe from Sega. With all these new or HD remixes popping up I wonder why anyone hasn't touched Stryder yet? There should be a new Road Rage game too.
@TexasAnMGrad2K Road Rage is happening isn't it? Not a HD update but an entire remake. I swear Criterion Games said that would be one of their next projects..
Providing EA don't get too involved it could be awesome.. lets not hold our breath though.
Canceled again. Does anyone remember when it was canceled for Dreamcast? SEGA would be the developer, at that time.
Ah streets of rage, what an absolute classic series, played it recently when they came out with the sega megadrive collection for PS3. Struggled to complete it! Must've been a better gamer as a kid I guess!
@residude Hahaha.. Like a lot of old games. The retro classics seem near impossible to complete now, used to breeze through them though as a kid!!
absolutely loved this series back in the day, so yeah out of nostalgia only I would give this a chance. it certainly doesnt look all that bad (though double dragon neon fooled me) for a pre-pre-pre-pre-(lots of pres) pre- alpha.
hope somebody pick it up
The intro is funny but I would never play this actual game if it were made. I really don't like 3d fighting games like that. A 2d remake I might play, tho I can't imagine it being as fun as the original anyways so I'd rather play that.
Presentation of the game is great. Unfortunately, doesn't look or play like a SoR game. SoR will always be a 2D side scroller. 3D brawlers don't do it right, at least for me. Just not the same feel at all. SoRR is last, greatest SoR game. Too bad Sega didn't hire on the guys from Bombergames to work on an ACTUAL sequel.
@Hatz82 God Hand, nuff said.
I love God Hand (amazingly) but it was originally a 3D game and even God Hand had quite a few things that I didn't like about it. You can't change a series that's been 2D based for so many years. It loses the feel IMO. This is the old man in me talking of course.
looks terrible....SOR1 classic..dont mess with it...still waiting for a direct port of Turtles in Time..of all games they mess with that one
I really feel that remakes shouldnt be done unless they can add something significant to the gameplay and fun factor of the game thats being remade...They recently remade Double dragon with Double Dragon Neon but failed to capture the coop based gameplay because they didnt address the changes in gaming. People play games online now with online coop. you cant put a game out without online coop. As for this game I cant really tell if its a good thing it got shelved but if the effort is half assed then maybe it is a good thing.
The presentation already was really well done, from the "arcades" to the "STAGE". I'm sure with some really good polish on the gameplay, this could've been a really good game.
Man, i would love a new SoR so much.
