Camelot takes the lead

Mythic Entertainment's online role-playing game Dark Age of Camelot debuted in first place on NPD Intelect's latest weekly list of best-selling games. The massively multiplayer game, which was released earlier this month, is set in a medieval fantasy world inspired by traditional Arthurian legends. Players assume the role of a character in one of the three warring realms--Midgard, Hibernia, or Albion--and they can gain experience and levels by fighting enemies and completing quests.

Westwood's latest real-time strategy game expansion, Command & Conquer Yuri's Revenge, debuted in second place on the list. The expansion adds a new campaign, a new playable faction, and a number of other new features to Westwood's popular Command & Conquer Red Alert 2. Third place went to Electronic Arts' virtual-life game The Sims, followed by Blizzard's role-playing game expansion Diablo II: Lord of Destruction. Codemasters' Cold War-era tactical shooter, Operation Flashpoint, came in at fifth place on the weekly list.

NPD also released its monthly list of best-selling games for the month of September 2001. Not surprisingly, The Sims bounced back into the lead in the monthly list, up from third place in August. Diablo II: Lord of Destruction dropped from first into second, followed by Operation Flashpoint in third. EA's virtual-life game expansion The Sims: House Party climbed up one spot into fourth, followed by Infogrames' venerable theme park management game, RollerCoaster Tycoon, which was released more than two-and-a-half years ago.
