Activision hails Modern Warfare 3 launch as the biggest opening "across all forms of entertainment," topping Black Ops' $650 million debut.
Last week's launch of the Call of Duty: Elite subscription service may have been marred by technical problems, but the accompanying debut of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 suffered no such setbacks. Activision today touted the multiplatform military shooter as the biggest launch ever (in terms of sales) "across all forms of entertainment," with a five-day worldwide sell-through of $775 million.
That total was enough to wrest the title from the previous five-day record holder, last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops. The Cold War-era installment of the series netted $650 million in its opening stretch, dethroning its own predecessor, 2009's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. That title brought in a $550 million haul at retailers worldwide in its first five days on sale. Additionally, Activision said Modern Warfare 3 was the best-selling North American game launch of all time for five of its retail partners: Amazon.com, GameStop, Best Buy, Target, and Wal-Mart.
Modern Warfare 3 proved to be a juggernaut beyond brick-and-mortar retailers, as the game's online component also posted new records. Activision and Microsoft said the Xbox 360 version of the game saw 3.3 million players log more than 7 million multiplayer hours in the game's first day on sale, besting the 2.6 million players and 5.9 million multiplayer hours Black Ops managed a year before. Modern Warfare 3 also set a concurrent player record on Xbox Live, with 3.3 million players online simultaneously on launch day.
Sony did not release PlayStation Network statistics for the game, but SCEA president and CEO Jack Tretton did say the launch had been "hugely successful" on Sony's platform.

what about the trash talk between BF3 and that game, that seems to DIE after the reviews and records of CoD mw3 Were made listen, do u think we "hate" on call of duty and activision NOW! i think the trial can be over before it starts.
@jasonzilla11 I think this post dies a while ago. But to answer, yes it's the communities fault, but the designers MADE it so it was the communities fault. While not on purpose, I'm sure, they designed the game in such an asinine, and easily exploitative way that the community had no choice but to accept it. I don't blame the entirety of CoD problems on the makers, but they deserve partial credit, they don't get a free pass because their fans are almost all evil. It's like with Dr. Frankenstein's monster! He couldn't control it's behavior, fear of fire, and natural hostility, but he made it that way. He accidentally put in the abnormal brain (Similar to the noobtubes, OP perks, and weapons) believing it to be the key to life, only to be lead astray and tainting the monster's potential, and when he tried to fix it, matters only worsened until the monster had to be destroyed by the people who feared, and despised it. Even then, the monster kept coming back, unscaved, and as strong as ever while still retaining it's strength and power, even after much more abuse later on. But like all things, it met it's own end, while still holding it's infamous title and being remembered in history as the "experiment gone wrong". *Lightening strikes in the background* Lols, see yah.
@dxBIGBOSSxb But I really have to ask: who's fault is that? It's the community's fault. We were the ones who decided it would be a great idea to hack the game, mod it, exploit it. We thought that we should boost. We thought we should camp. That's why most people hate on Call of Duty. It's because of its community. And really, it's not like it's Infinity Ward's fault or Activision's fault. I really don't care how much hate I get for this comment. You all know it's true.
You know. Pokemons been the same forever and im not complaining... but whatever, back to skyrim i guess...
Mankind is doomed. Buying this game is the beginning of Human Devolution. and I'm guilty. so sue me.
I pay for more map packs!!!! YEAH, SPEND SPEND SPEND!!! FUN FUN FUN, Looking forward till the weekend :P
Hey Kotick are you gonna thank your fans for helping your games set records or are you gonna keep forcing your fans to pay for more map packs?
It's amazing that a game with a 5 hour campaign and a "same as last year" multiplayer can still make numbers like these. Conclusive proof, that most people are stupid. I'm back off to Skyrim: 65 hours & counting.
The gaming community is getting more and more sad. I remember when the most hyped games were things like Super Mario 64 and Final Fantasy VII. Those were the days am I right nostalgia gamers?
Wonder how this did compared to Skyrim. Tried this out and remembered you have to camp to win still.
Like it or not, people who criticize COD are just minorities. You people are the only people thinking its not worth buying the game. Single player was freaking awesome.
I'm not one of the blind who bought into the same game with a new coat of paint every year.Lemmings :(
I've seen almost no data on the performance of MW3 on specific platforms, so I am happy for Activision but feel no particular risk that MW will upset the PC gaming scene, which is the only place I play shooters anyway. However, I do hope that MW doesn't marginalize Gears of War, Halo, Resistance, and other console-centric shooters. Anything that reduces diversity can't be a good thing. In retrospect, the BF3 and MW3 drama seems even more pointless than it did before their release. BF3 is best enjoyed on the PC in all aspects from graphics to control to community. Since Activision has already stated outright that the PC version of Elite will not include numerous features of the console version; it's clear Activision is focusing on the console market. EA may want to take notice of Xbox's popularity, however. It should consider starting a new franchise to compete with MW, if it wants to compete with MW, since a better BF will likely be even more PC-oriented.
Yeah, that's great Activision, Make millions of dollars at the SACRIFICE of our satisfaction!
Is it just me but im fed up of fps. It also seems to me bf fanboys cry the loudest, as if you went by how much bf talk of smashing mw3 for the past months, you would think no one was gonna buy mw3. As usual game forums definitely seem to voice the minority.
@dxBIGBOSSxb I wasn't talking about Gamestop's revenue, who cares about Gamestop's profits/losses? As long as the game was sold new it doesn't affect the sales figures shown here.
if its too fast paced play search or a more tactical mode, and I have to say the campaign is epic even if it lasts a few days and... as the name suggests it is the sequel to MW2 so don't expect it to be too different ok?
I really wish people would stop hating on Call of Duty. It's as if you can't recognise a good game when you see one. It's nowhere near the quality of Skyrim or Uncharted 3 but is still a good game, even if the Multiplayer is a bit too hectic and laggy and you die too quickly. It has a surprisingly solid singleplayer and Spec Ops is back, which is cause for celebration. It is not a bad game so stop jumping on the Call of Duty hating bandwagon.
Congratulations guys, you just gave activision $775 million in 5 days for a copy/paste job where really the only "development" they did was making new maps. They should just stick with this copy/paste method, i mean no one really seems to care obviously. Maybe one day people will wake up and see that they are buying the same game every other year. (I say every other year because treyarch does a little something different with cod like putting in zombies for ex.)
It's like the Wii, a bad system with a huge fanbase. There's more clueless people out there than smart people, just accept it. Activision are only fooling the clueless ones.
Are you really comparing GOW and Uncharted to MW3??? Apples and oranges my friend, even though I understand the analogy you are trying to use. I agree with dxBIGBOSSxb, MW3 is really just a fancy map pack whereas these other said sequels are (or attempt to be) driven by a stories, character development, enhanced level design, etc.... COD is becoming a corporate brand, and not an evolving series aimed true gamers. It's appears to be pandering to the lowest common denominator. Please see article http://www.gamespot.com/features/the-return-of-arcades-6344645/?tag=updates%3Beditor%3Ball%3Btitle%3B10
@dxBIGBOSSxb I'm sorry but EVERYONES job has customers that complain to them, we just dont get the luxury of having them complain about video games. I would love it if my customers complaints were that petty and trivial. When it comes to changes What in the world would you want them to Change? Huge titles stick to a format. Thats what they are doing. Halo, GOW, Uncharted, Splinter Cell, GTA All of them are like their predecessors. They make small changes but nothing huge nothing epic but they make as many as any of those other titles. You stated that I wasted 100$ on somthing that should have cost 20$ but the changes they made were just as huge as those other titles and If you feel that way WHY are you even reading these articles?
@Infinity_Gauntl Since when was it part of the job to have your ears bleed from whining children, complaining parents, and console elitists nagging 24-7? I dare you to be in that situation. And no I don't hate the series, I never said that, you (Like every other "I'm superior because I don't care" person) didn't bother to read enough to know I never said anything like that. I hate the community. THEY ruined the game, and THEY are the most idiotic, elitist, egotistic, gloating A-Holes, I've ever had the displeasure of knowing. This game franchise exists solely because of "Gunz and esplosionz!!" and people are easily impressed. I have actually been a fan since Finest Hour (I think I shocked you knowing there was a game before MW1), and I loved it until MW2, when loud mouthed children, racists, hackers, trolls, and many others, took it upon themselves to make the series as unbearable as possible, and half of that reason is because the Game Designers: 1. Don't care 2. Don't care 3. Don't care! They change nothing, they rarely update or respond to acts of violation, and they claim to monitor servers when really, they have better stuff to do with their time like NOT CARING!!!
how are we supposed to expect innovation when we reward recylcing. They would be stupid not to keep doing what they're doing and the consumers are to blame.
next winter, purple ops, then the following winter, MW4, the end of America and the World (this is when you may see something "really" new in COD series, such as better graphics on a *new engine...
@dxBIGBOSSxb Wow imagine that somone that has to do their job. I don't feel bad in the slightest for him and before you go on basing COD why dont you buy it and play it. Why are you even on this article if you don't like the series?
@Infinity_Gauntl Who do you think has to put the used games back on the dang shelves, and listen to person after person come in and bitc* about the game when all he wants to do is just sell games, make a LITTLE small talk and go home to play Xbox. It's like a bartender who has to listen to everyone's problems, and after listening to hundreds of people complaining and saying it sucks I'm sure you'd also get pretty annoyed. He even said, "If people hate it so much, WHY BUY THE GAME!" He's even at the point where he wishes both CoD and BF fans would just "make-out" with each other and "get it over with", because constantly hearing this stupid feud every time he goes to work about what is the "better FPS" is driving him crazy, and it drives me crazy too at my work, and I thank god when I hear WoW banter instead.
I wonder why call off duty games don't use an engine that permit the use of destroction like battlefield and maybe larger campaign maps and mp maps? then i believe it could get a solid 10 on market. I've had all the games of modern warfare played, enjoy the story but now i'm starting to have the sensation that is 2 frekin linear. I can finish every game in under 3 hours on medium diff.....wtf...
Behind Activision, is a solid publicity market, a solid cast of voice actors..and why not a solid story that could easy get a movie. If i thnik back, only a few games have had so many sequels and a long lasting life and still be in top charts. It will be no suprise if a next era warfare from future with call of duty will begin. The past, the present and maybe the future.
No disrespect to the fans but buying the same game is really stupid I mean all that changed was the title from MW2 to MW3, the multiplayer is still the same, okay there might be a few changes here and there but that's it. Short words NOTHING NEW
Good I hope GameStop goes bankrupt. GameStop is one of the reasons why I have to register to play console games online. GameStop and freeloaders ruined gaming.
I think what we have here is the group mentality of belongingness. Everyone needs to read and comment on COD message boards to feel accepted. Why else would you read and comment on COD message boards and news articles if you hate the game? To everyone that hates this game shouldn't you be looking at game that you actually like rather then "wasting" your time with COD info.
