"Top Hollywood talent to create linear video content" for Activision's online service inspired by Modern Warfare 3; launch date for series unclear.
On Monday, Activision officially unveiled Call of Duty: Elite, a supplementary online service to Call of Duty games. Now, the London-based newspaper the Guardian reports that Elite will feature a new transmedia aspect--a video series based on the first-person shooter series.
"We have engaged some top Hollywood talent to create linear video content that will be exclusive to Elite members," Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg told the Guardian. "That content is inspired by Call of Duty."
It was unclear if the series would be live-action or animated, and Hirshberg declined to clarify. "We're not going to give much more detail until we have something to show," he said. "That'll be later in the year."
When it launches alongside Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on November 8, Call of Duty: Elite will be an online service with both free and premium aspects, although Activision has declined to say which aspects of Elite's array of features will be gratis and which will cost. However, the company has outlined many of the service's features, including cross-game player profiles, social networking and group/clan formation, leaderboards, video sharing, competitions for in-game and real-live prizes, and training tools to improve players' performance. Played and loved CoD4, skipped WaW, played MW2 for a month and quit, played Black Ops for 3 months and quit...please oh god please infinity ward make the multiplayer butter smooth. You guys have the balls-to-the-wall campaign locked in. Now you just have to playtest the HECK out of the multiplayer before you release it. Otherwise...I will be a sad panda who sheds tears over the awesomeness that was CoD4, which, DESPITE its flaws, kept me playing for 6 months straight.
It has nothing to do with whether multiplayer will remain free. It is the fact that this franchise makes I believe billions of dollars every year but that isn't good enough for Bobby Kotick's greed. He wants to milk a few more million out any chance he gets and if people keep buying it then he will keep milking it. I am sure millions of people will still buy it but I hope that nobody buys it. I WILL be buying Battlefield 3 this winter and will not buy MW3. Oh yeah call me a fanboy if you want but I only own BFBC2 and actually didn't get it until the Ultimate Edition came out but I own COD 2, 4(MW), 5(WAW), 6(MW2), and 7(BO).
So... You want me to pay for XBL, your game, AND a monthly/yearly fee for some extra content that probably should be there in the first place? WHAT THE F**K?!
Also NOBODY has said that you need to pay for multiplayer! If you check the link at the bottom of the article, it clearly reads that MULTIPLAYER WILL REMAIN FREE. oh, and bring on the fanboy negs ;)
Grrr, I like both CoD and Battlefield but all these damn fanboy comments are making it real hard to like BF(the choice of most fanboys)!
i just noticed that last article about this had in the headline ''mw3 multiplayer still free'' its kinda sad when you have to worry about the multiplayer being free for any game that isent a mmorpg especially when you are already paying 60$ for it
Although they made this video funny, there's no way that I would pay for this service. I already have to pay for my internet, electricity and utilities, why would I dish out extra money on top of that? There's a reason why I've never played World of Warcraft.

It's funny because everything they showed when he was "playing" multiplayer is evrything that I hate about Call of Duty. Spawn campers, remote control cars, crossbow bs (in fact he even said "what the hell is this? the middle ages?" which is exactly how I feel it's modern timesz for Christ sake)
This was in the Wall Street Journal and basically from what they were saying is that Acticision is going to charge a monthly fee for playing the game online but all of the DLC is free with this service. GameSpot isn't mentioning everything.
Where's the dedicated servers? Step up or sit down. Battlefield 3 will crush you into worm food.
I was kind of on the fence about whether to get Battlefield or COD so I would really like to thank Activision for making my decision for me. There is no way I am going to support a company with a decision as greedy and stupid as this.

So Activision wants to do what Bungie is doing, but charge for it. And EA Sports is doing the some thing, but just gives you what you used to have for free.

@Renegade194 No, buddy. You're not the only one who likes and plays both games. I'm super glad that at least another person isn't a person who thinks that you should either play 1 game, or the other. BF3 and MW3 both look like amazing games, and I can't wait for them, too.
You know, everyone is bashing Call of Duty and jumping on the Battlefield bandwagon, which is fine. However, am I only one who thinks it's totally fine to like both games? Call of Duty is an arcade-type shooter, which is fast paced and fun, whereas Battlefield is meant for players who like more realistic shooters and team work. I love both and cannot wait to play Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 this fall.
If I were them I would add these feature: - Classic: weapons from WW2 and maps from CoD W@W - Cold War: 70s weapon with CoD Black Ops map - Modern Warfare: most update weapon and maps from MW1 and MW2 I am not that fond for Black Ops' multiplayer mode, I prefer MW2.
