Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer to get world premiere as 6,000 fans of blockbuster military shooter series expected to descend on Los Angeles for Call of Duty XP 2011.
Activision is aiming to build the Call of Duty community in a big way. The publisher last month announced Call of Duty Elite, a new service for fans of the military first-person shooter series with a wealth of social networking bells and whistles. Today, Activision followed that up with the introduction of Call of Duty XP 2011, a convention it dubbed a "celebration" for the game's community.
Set to take place on a 12-acre compound in Los Angeles September 2-3, Call of Duty XP 2011 will serve as a coming-out party for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer mode. An expected 6,000 attendees will be able to get their hands on the game's cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes, as well as check out the fully functioning Elite service for the first time.
Beyond the reveals, the convention will also play host to a $1 million Call of Duty tournament, with players able to qualify on site or by competing in regional Black Ops contests leading up to XP 2011. There will also be paintball competitions on a life-sized multiplayer map, "AAA live entertainment," and panels with Call of Duty developers. While attendance is going to be capped at a little over 6,000, Activision has promised a "constant stream" of videos, photos, and status updates will be released through TV and online outlets for those unable to make it.
This is not Activision's first experience with large-scale fan festivals. After the publisher merged with Vivendi Games in 2008, it inherited BlizzCon, the annual convention dedicated to the games of World of Warcraft developer Blizzard Entertainment.
Tickets to Call of Duty XP 2011 will go on sale July 19 and sell for $150 each. All of the money from ticket sales will go to benefit the Call of Duty Endowment, a nonprofit group founded by Activision in 2009 to help soldiers transition to civilian life with job placement and training programs. For more, check out the official Call of Duty XP 2011 website.
at least the money goes to a non-profit org. i really would like to see all these BA hardcore gamers try to paintball and realize that there awsome cod skills have no use in real life combat. even more fun would be to see them cowering behind a wall afraid of a paintball giving them a bruise
Activison has taken stupidity to an entirely new level with how they are advertising this game that I hope no one buys. They dont even realise how much competition there is from the end of October to the end of November. All they have shown is a campaign that makes no sense two guys vs Russia = WW3 I dont think so. There supposedely redefining coop by taking out zombies and putting in stupid spec ops again and a wanna be Horde mode, but i dont think they know Gears 3 improved Horde mode again. Then they show there terrible multiplayer 1 month before BF3 for only 150$ a ticket and they try to justify it by saying theres paintball. I can go rebuy camperwarfare 2 for like 10 and see the same trrible multiplayer but i wont cause they both suck. I any game but this sells more in the fall.
ah id go just to see all them run around playing paintball trying to pretend they are in an online game. and this is a ridiculous idea i mean really? let's rehash a game and have 6,000 people who live with their moms come to it. Oh and while we are at it lets have them PAY for online features but i guess "If you build it, they will come."
Cool I wanna go for the paintballing. And I'll play it just like I play COD, I'll camp in one room and shoot anyone who enters :)
If they build it the sheep will flock.. Enjoy your rehased leftovers while the rest of the common sense world waits for the release of BF3.
@ gameking5000 Sure Activition has the single top selling shooter in the industry but that is all they have. EA on the other had has fairly much to offer. Just because they have the top selling game doesn't make them top EA over all. I own at least 3 modern EA games for every modern Activision game I own.
>Dynamo11 LoL If they didn't do that, the whole thing would essentially be one giant day-care center.
just cut out activision, give money direct a charity of your choosing, then get a bunch mates and go paintball
The best part of CoD franchise is surely Call of Duty Endowment group. The games themselves must have a "macro" kind of automated development kit, like MS Excel ones that you only need to press a play button and Voila: another sequel; but while part of the money goes to this group, I'm ok. People do buy it anyway.
@TheIfym20 How would PEOPLE CAMP in places? Oh wait if you do play in the console version then it's safe to say some COD players are playing in the game. No wonder your team sucked, unless you noticed BATTLEFIELD is a team game. The camping in COD is HORRIBLE absolutely horrible, no recoil on weapon makes it easier.
Whilst all this sounds like a fun (albeit very expensive) excursion, I can't help but wonder about Activision's prioritization skills...shouldn't they be focusing on their upcoming game, as well as on fixing and/or updating their current Call of Duty titles? Just saying...
TonnFool23 Well I have played both games!! I still back MW series up for what it is!! Have nothing against BF:BC2 or BF3!! they are excellent games!! but when it comes to people who love MW series, guys like you bump in with their teaching lessons of what is better and what is not!! mind you that you are right, there are no campers in BF series. you always have the option of blowing a camper off the map which is actually a junglle!! this requires no F***ing strategy and like in MW Multiplayer we refer to such players as noob tubers!! So if you love to be a noob tuber you shouldn't ask the campers to switch and become you!! Now if we talk about graphics, it does not change anything although personally I love good and latest graphics and am looking forward to BF3 for that!! Most of the MW series fan following is for single player and slick gameplay the one you call without recoil. I say so what!! it still works for even people like me who are not under 18 and been playing for more than 10 years!! I play MW series for the gameplay and when bored switch to BFBC2 and play the multiplayer!! It is lot better than MW series but gives no right to any one to insult MW series. Every game has its pro's and con's remember the sh*ty servers with which BFBC2 was launched!! I hope it cools you down and your lectures as well because they make no difference to anyone!! If you still feel frustrated go have S*x!!
@Albaficas EA has tried many times to topple CoD's throne but it hasn't. There is a good chance that EA is going to fail again.
It's funny because people should be at school or working around that time. Sept 2 is a Friday and Sept 3 is a Saturday. I can think of a thousand things I rather do on a Friday or Saturday night than to attend a COD convention LOL.
who cares anyway we have a new king and its BF3...cry moar CoD kid fans,RAAAAGE MOAR CoD kid fans.CoD is history - overated period.good luck with MW3 oups sry i mean MW1.5
This is almost going to remind me of Conan O'Brien's "STAR WARS CONVENTION" skit with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. In L.A too! lmao. Don't know what I'm talking about ?? Look it up in Youtube.
Regardless if your talking bad about cod or talking good your stilling talking about it. so keep talking about it. and i will be attending cod xp so see you there :D
@tonnfool23 Yeah man BFBC2 is the best game in the world. Nobody camps, cowards in tanks, or hides in towers because you can blow them up simply amazing.....
WHAT ?!!! There is a COD convention now? When did this happen? Why? So many questions I have. I cant begin to imagine what sort of people will go to it. The only cod fanboys I know are teenagers. This is mind boggling...
@TheIfym20 BF isn't stragetic? So what's so stragetic about COD other than running around a 8x8 map and firing a fully automatic weapon with no recoil? Nothing, there isn't a single shread of team work at all. Hell even World of Warcraft takes more skill than call of duty. And camp in towers? You haven't played the game at all, you can BLOW IT UP there isn't a single camper in battlefield. Go play it before you chat crap.
Love how BF3 fanboys just crawl out of the wood work to attack this article. BF3 still has camper and glitches just like COD. Every game has their fair share idiots playing the game. EA is as greedy as Activision, and they milk a game whenever they get (madden). BF3 is not more strategic than COD, you have stupid morons that camp in tanks and towers and that require you to use RPG just to kill them. Play your own game and shut the f¥~% up.
@StingrayX5 Activision are doing more than contributing. They FOUNDED their own charity group. So of course they are contributing or else the group would go bankrupt.
Oh boy, a convention full of jerks, 30-year olds who live in their mom's basement, and 10 year olds! It leaves Battlefield fans shaking their heads(shakes head).
I hope many a pc gamer goes to punch the Treyarch devs in the balls for one of the worst launches of a flagship game on the PC. (Black Ops multiplayer) Its still has technical issues to this day.
I understand the charity part of this...but the amount of money Activision already has...they can contribute more then enough.
great! now i can go to a convention and finally meet the rich douche who called me a "f@%%*% N#$$@#" through the entire session!!!! pass.
omg while i read this i hear them laughing at me. "such an awsome event and u cant even come hahaha" CURSE THIS DREADED ECONOMY SUCKING AWAY ALL MY FUNDS!!!!
Beside COD fanboys (and some journalists), I don't know anyone who would spend 150$ on a ticket plus spend on airfare and hotel if they don't live in the LA area to attend a COD convention .
At first i was like " Wait, what?", then " Oh wait, it figures...". Not really a huge surprise, it was inevitable, it is the most successful franchise of the century. The price is ridiculous but if it all goes to charity i'd actually go if i lived there just to indirectly donate that money to people that are much braver than i'll ever be.
