Reported ex-Bungie employee says studio's Activision game will be a massively multiplayer first-person shooter; aim is to become "WoW in space."
Source: Gaming blog Kotaku's Australian arm.
What we heard: At last year's Game Developers Conference, Bungie's writer/design director Joseph Staten offered a teasing bit of intel on the studio's first post-Halo title.
"I think it's a shame that we spent so much time working on this world called Halo and then we only let people spend six or eight or 10 hours in it," Staten said. "Wouldn't it be great if we could make a world that was always there for you, with lots of stories to tell, like a big, infinite storytelling horizon? Man, that would be great."
Now, a source speaking with Kotaku Australia says Bungie is currently crafting a massively multiplayer online first-person shooter titled Destiny. The source is reportedly one of about 30 contractors recently reportedly let go without justification from the project.
According to the source, Destiny--which is codenamed Tiger in development--will run on an entirely new game engine and will sport "unique online connectivity and matchmaking technology." The source said Bungie's MMOG will be "WoW in space."
Currently, all that is officially known is that Bungie is creating an all-new multiplatform universe as part of its 10-year publishing deal with megapublisher Activision.
The official word: As of press time, Activision has not responded to GameSpot's request for comment or clarification on the matter. However, Bungie did address the termination aspect of the source's story by bluntly refuting it.
"Bungie has never been asked to lay off any employees or contract employees by our publisher, Activision Blizzard, for any reason," reads the statement. "The talented professionals who grace our offices day in and day out are the lifeblood of Bungie--our most cherished commodity--and the unsubstantiated rumors posted today are in direct opposition to the culture and values that we believe make Bungie an exceptional place to work and to call home."
Bogus or not bogus?: Bungie's statement at the GDC certainly contains language emblematic of the massively multiplayer online genre. Moreover, Bungie is an established first-person shooter developer, so if the studio were to create an MMOG, a first-person shooter style would seem a likely fit.
trion is teaming up with Syfy to make a 3d person sci-fi mmofps, while at the same time Syfy will be coming out with a new series at the same time for the same game. something like that. check out trions website, they explained it better.:)
Planetside, a space themed MMOFPS, was a great game... At first anyway. I would like to see another game similar to it! Hopefully Bungie/Activision can do a better job of managing the game than Sony Online Entertainment did for Planetside.
Hmm not really sure how I would feel about a Sci-Fi MMOFPS. Don't get me wrong I love FPS games and do occasionally enjoy MMOs but I'm really not sure how well the two would mix. In theory it's a great idea because as a fan of the Battlefield games (not so much the Bad Company games) I enjoy massive landscapes and battles of epic proportion, I'm just not sure there would be a way to integrate a quest system to keep the action hot and heavy, or even edge of your seat stealthy for that matter. Also I'm extremely opposed to paying a monthly fee to play a game online so if they do make a Halo MMOFPS I really hope there aren't monthly fees.
@deltamirage Well of course if their "source" just got laid off hes going to say that. He's not going to praise the studio that just fired him. And also I don't think an MMOFPS can be primarily focused on sword combat. So it's prolly gonna be sci-fi.
I dont like the "WoW in space" comment. How much more WoW can people seriously take? That also makes me think its not going to be a Scifi game because hey if it's "WoW in space" that's a medieval fantasy game. So is this going to be a sword and board melee combat game like Age of Chivalry? Or perhaps space marine on Draenor....
I'll wager the only reason there aren't more MMO fans raving about this is because none of them can muster up the will to leave their game long enough to post. Just food for thought. At any rate, I can't wait! This game is going to be so bad ass. I hope it has subscription fees so keep all the chumps out.
There won't be a subscription fee but there will be those damn "micro-payments" everywhere... "Getting your a$$ constantly kicked by a 13 year old? Spend $2 and get a limited time power-up!"
I think Bungie was better of with Microsoft... I fear whoever makes the next Halo...it just won't be the same I would play this MMOG if there are no subscription fees that is. It might be worth looking into However Activision Kills developers this could Make or break Bungie.
there's been a game called dust 514 in the works for years now. it's an mmo fps in the EVE online universe. I doubt that bungie has anything to do with it but i don't know much about the EVE developer (affiliates or how they're doing financially) just throwing it out there. Any speculation?
I agree with crazyeightz1 about how FPS battles only last seconds....but this is Bungie and Activision....if anyone could pull it off, it'd be these two. I am fond of many MMO games...on PC. But I have faith they could do it.
Why did Bungie went to Activision!!! WHY!!! should went to EA less they dont eff up their best game. I mean look what they did to CoD...... now CoD blows they gonna mess up Bungie 2
i wonder how they would make the fighting work since the average timespan in FPS of 2 players engaging in combat is like half a second. Where as a battle in normal MMO's can sometime last more then a minute. I wouldnt want to see a 20 minute questing adventure and all of a sudden the side of my brains get splattered out before i can even blink. that would suck but otherwise, i like the idea i hope its good.
@freema. no, anything that has to do with activision is a failure. only when activision lets blizzard do their stuff do good games come. however, if you knew anything about the gaming industry, you would hate activision
MMO is boring and matchmaking will make it much more boring... LOL Bungie - better signed it with EA....
Yay, yet another generic FPS, oh wait its a MMOFPS, yay yet another generic FPS that will be yet another generic MMO. I wonder if they will make yet another generic movie about it. AWESOME...
good luck Bungie I wish you success, every mmo for consoles that sounded good in development never saw the light of day. I for one was hellbent on Champions but where's it at? Please make it happen and make it happen on 360 & ps3, I have no desire to play on my pc
Dayum if they combine three of my most fave things WoW, Halo and aweosome stylings of Activision's Call of Duty titles then It will be a MEGA Win. Bungie + Activision = WIN
@ endouken Yeah im sure thats just what they want, another pathetic 12 year old telling them how to make a game. If you dont like how they made the game go play COD and stop QQing. I for one think a fpsmmo is a niche that hasnt been filled since the glory days of Planetside and cant wait for it to be done.
The world really needs a great MMOFPS. After Planetside showed so much potential (too bad the tech behind it was limited) I've been keeping my eye out for a good one to come along.
Unless it's a new Oni game, I don't care what Bungie's coming out with. Let the thumbs down commence.
Two things: -I'm definitely happy that Bungie is showing the signs of not 'selling out' to Activison, as some may have feared. -Bungie working on a MMOFPS actually sounds like good news to me. Their crew has excellent standards for their work, and they wouldn't take up a project like this unless they knew for sure they could pull it off. Heck, it's completely possible that MMOFPS is the next big, upcoming juggernaut of the gaming industry, especially if this rumor proves true.
Hey guys, let's not make too much effort here. It's not like we're looking for an original idea or anything, just "WoW in space"... I usually like to play games before I judge them but count me out of this one if only for the fact that it has Activision associated with it. Never mind the terribly uninspired premise.
it's coz mmos (well one at least) make a rediculous amount of cash, and i do mean rediculous.I see their attraction. They wanna take over the fps genre and be the "wow" of fps.Wow after these 6yrs is trying to reinvent them selves with a new mmo coming out soon which i suspect will be a space mmo.The prob is swtor is already poised to take the lead as their mmo has already an announced launch window. But it would be foolish to think that wow's future mmo replacement by blizz will be anything but a contender for top place in the realm of space mmo's.
*Tinfoil Hat* April 29, 2010, Bungie announces a 10-year publishing agreement with publisher Activision Blizzard to bring a new IP to multiple platforms; currently codenamed, "Destiny." The (Activision) Blizzard next-gen MMO "Titan" scheduled to launch in 2014 is a new IP http://www.blizzardnewmmo.com/ Coincidence? Maybe. Maybe.
Persistent death match with hundreds of players and vehicles. Ya, sounds like a losing combo. Just keep diddling your elfs.
@MERGATROYDER I was not trying to criticize anyone and its not lack of knowledge, I know its still not a complete game. However, it is still out, you can play it and it has been like you said "for a year now".
Careful - Hellgate:London was a MMOFPS, on a smaller scale, and they pulled the plug on the servers and closed shop less than a year after it's first release.
It all depends. But I'm waiting to judge until we actually get some meat, not just a title and iffy details.
Bungie = Pathetic. I play a lot of reach, but man o man can i give you a list of improvements i would make if i were anything important at bungie. And now without the financial (almost unlimited) resources of microsoft, they're going to have to do something as special as when they made halo: CE. Also, as bungie are currently locking any thread on their website that even suggests hackers/modders are ruining the game play i'll simply state it here instead - and it's getting more and more common. Screw you bungie.
Wow fail I would rather play wow then this, why not just make another awesome GPS if that's wat ur best at
So it's basically gonna be MAG.. Except with things called frumps - which look a lot like grunts. And an evil thing called the hood, which shouldnt be confused with the flood. I'm in! Haha.
Bungie will pull it off. They like being innovative; they know it's expected. My eyebrows rise to the rumored idea. Bungie left MS to reach a bigger audience; this game will be on consoles, plus PC. No doubt about it. Chill out people.
"I can't name 5 MMOs on a console, seriously. I'm assuming it is for the PC?" This game is confirmed to be in development for PC yes. But consoles too.
I can't name 5 MMOs on a console, seriously. I'm assuming it is for the PC? On an aside, MMOs just don't interest me all that much. Instead of being able to direct a player through an experience (level design, story, etc.) you are just going around doing quests (I haven't played any MMOs other than WOW, so correct me if I am wrong). The same thing seems to go with other multiplayer games as well, which is why a lot of the time I prefer a good single player game to a good multiplayer one. Also, most MMOs that I've heard of cost money per month to play. If I were really into an MMO (it being the only game I am playing), and I am not in a movie watching mood (which would mean putting Netflix on hold) then I may pay $10 a month for one. Otherwise, it is very unlikely. I don't like the idea of not being able to play a game that I already technically own (I can't imagine having to pay to play Bad Company 2 on the PC for instance). I would really rather have Bungie be working on something other than an MMO, if they rumors are true.
too bad im boycotting activision. That company have proved once and again that the more money you give it the more people working there will suffer. Im not a big fan of EA but it is by far much better than Activision...God I hate that company
Activision is only putting this game on store shelves for a piece of the pie. They're not involved with making the game.
Free roam FPS sounds fine by me. I think people here are automatically giving it a bad time because it's published by Activision and it's another Bungie FPS instead of something like Myth. Truth be told, Activision will probably saturate the project with some ass-hattery, but I'm going to try the game before I judge it.
@EmJayW I'm not saying Halo was a money-making exercise, it was a labour of love for Bungie and it's what they'll always be remembered for (and too right, it wasn't my type of shooter but it was pretty epic). I doubt that this new IP will have any of the same hallmarks though, Activision won't give Bungie the creative space they need to deliver something amazing and will slap a prohibitive pricing regime on it. Call me cynical but I predict Bungie will try to pull out of the 10-year megadeal once this MMOFPS flops and Activision will tear them apart like they did with Infinity Ward.
