Franchise at heart of 10-year exclusivity deal will have fresh technology under the hood, handcrafted by Halo: Reach studio; employee count hits 180.
With the critically lauded Halo: Reach launching today, the game industry's eyes are turning to Bungie's next project, which remains shrouded in mystery. The only hard facts known about it are that it will be an all-new intellectual property published by Activision and that it will be multiplatform, coming to at least the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
This week, Bungie revealed that its new game will also have an all-new engine under the hood. Speaking with Develop magazine, community director Brian Jarrard said that the new engine was already being readied.
"I would say it's in a stage where, technically we're still at the end of a pre-production mode," said Jarrard of the new engine. "But now that Reach is done the full weight of our team is rolling into the project. Real work is underway."
"I think it goes hand-in-hand with our independent spirit," he continued. "Just like we don't want to develop a game off someone else's IP, we want to push our own technology in the same way. That's going to be our position for the foreseeable future."
Ironically, Bungie and Activision's publishing deal extends past the foreseeable future. In April, the formerly Microsoft-owned studio and the megapublisher inked a deal that will see the latter be the exclusive distributor of Bungie's new IP through the year 2020. That lengthy time frame isn't stopping analysts from predicting that the first game in the franchise will sell 10 million units on the strength of the Bungie name alone.
Jarrard also said Bungie's head count increased from 110 to 180 during the course of Reach's development, forcing the studio to relocate from its old building. By comparison, the company employed only 60 people when the original Halo: Combat Evolved launched in 2001.
@NeoJ4K3 Sorry Neo, but the part you say that Blu-ray isn't necessary for gaming, is a pretty huge thing to say. I have tried going back to standard def and its just not the same. Lightening and shadows look better in HD, textures in most games do because they can't afford to compress them as much. Everything looks better. I can guarantee you that GT5 on the PS3 wouldn't look half as good if it wasn't running in HD. It's a shame that the PS3 can't render NURBS, hopefully the next system will be able to, and we will see the most accurate beautiful models ever seen in gaming!
Medal of honor? really? hmmm, haven't played it but i have heard not so good things about it...And the only reason it will not get games that look that good is partly due to the storage media. i have not problem with DVD and i feel Blu-ray isn't necessary for gaming yet. The one thing that i will give Blu-Ray is that it can hold so much data, textures and all that without compression, making everything just look sweet. If the 360 had Blu-ray, it would be an even narrower margin than it is now. Like i said, the PS3 is sometimes raw power, but each console has its strengths and weaknesses. And that is so weird I like the multi-plats on the 360 and you prefer the Ps3 lol, thats cool. and i dunno if it will change my view of the system, but it will certainly shed a completely new light on it.
@NeoJ4K3 I too have been gaming all my life but I started with the Megadrive then went to the PS1,followed by a Gameboy, followed by a Gamecube, then a DS,then a Wii (for Zelda,Mariokart and Super Smash Bros) followed by a PSP,PS3 then the 360.My brother had the PS2 so naturally I spent hours on GTA and Tekken.PS plus is a rip-off,I'm glad it's optional. Rage will be the best looking multi-platform game released to date.As it stands I'd say the new Medal Of Honour holds that title.I never deniew 360 graphics were good but it won't ever get games that look as good as GT5 and Killzone 3.Rage has always impressed me on all the platforms. You should give the adapter a look it may change your view of the system.I still play both for their exclusives but will favour the PS3 for multi-platform games with the exceptions of The Orange Box and Fable which were ported badly.
@MEDzZ3RO OH! as an afterthought about the Xbox 360 hardware running out of steam...New dev kits have been released that help developers get more out of the 360 as it still has alot of life and juice left in it honestly. If you don't believe me i dare you to check out HD videos of RAGE gameplay on the 360 and tell me you are not impressed...because i was completely blown away.
@MEDzZ3RO Yeah i have been gaming my whole life, first console was a NES and i have had every console since including a few before (Atari 2600 anyone?) I love gaming but sony always seems to get it wrong for me. I didn't get a PS2 of my own until the slim released and has some great games i just like the Gamecube and Xbox loads more. MAG i thought was a cool concept but upon playing it i was not impressed. I had such high hopes and it came off as cheesy and misdirected, but none the less I do have to give it to them for the sheer amount of players, that was just ridiculous. I have used the online recently and most games for me are not any better than when i tried before so eh, plus i think that Playstation Plus is a complete and utter rip-off...And that adapter is news to me, if i can use my 360 controller on my PS3 i would, in all honesty, us it so much more. I tried using the trigger extensions for my Ps3 which made it better, but not by much. either way i am just honestly happy for all this competition between the companies. Make the gamers get great things through their competition, this is a great console war, despite the tons and tons of fanboys and haters.
@NeoJ4K3 Thanks. I've always been vice versa,I've favoured my PS3 over my 360 but bought the 360 for games like Halo,Gears and Left 4 Dead (who wouldn't?). I suppose it's partially because I grew up with the PS1 just after the Sega Megadrive. That's probably a huge reason why I've favoured Sony but I suppose the second reason was free online.I didn't buy it for Bluray because I didn't have HD TVs when I bought it.The PS3 online isn't too bad now and it is getting alot of the content most people bought their Xbox 360 for.Servers on the PS3 exclusives from experience are second to none,Killzone 2 and MAG seem to offer some of the best servers I've experienced. Sony's controller is marmite, some love it others hate it.Just to give you the heads up there is an adapter for around Ģ20 which enables you to play on the PS3 with a 360 controller. It's called an XCM Cross battle adapter I believe;ignore the cheesy name it works well.My brother does it because he also uses the 360 controller for some of his games.Perhaps you may find a use for it?
P.S. Killzone 2 was not as good as everyone stated...I thought it was too staged, boring, and multiplayer was clunky...nice looking game though
@MEDzZ3RO I am glad that you are not an elitist fanboy one way or the other. I like that you take the points given and think about them logically. I don't consider myself a fanboy but i will admit i am much more partial to my Xbox 360 over my Ps3. The ps3 exclusives just don't do it for me in most cases. Infamous i like but i enjoyed Prototype much better, God of War 3 i thought was surprisingly average and I like Dante's Inferno leaps and bounds more. Heavy Rain, from a gamer side is boring, but story side it was great. Uncharted...is just awesome, And i actually bought my PS3 for Motorstorm so i do like those. The xbox is losing some exclusivity rights for some of their games, but they still get the DLC exclusives and first if it goes anywhere else which i like. If i enjoy a game enough to get DLC i am happy that i can get it first and sometimes only on my 360. Any third party game that is on all consoles, Bulletstorm, Assassin's Creed, etc, i will ALWAYS get on the xbox 360 due to xbox live, i like controller better and a myriad of other things. I will get the "good" exclusives for Ps3, but for me it does not have that many good ones to warrant a purchase over an Xbox at this point in time. The online is not as good, granted it is "free" but i can see why, it hardly works sometimes. The only reason i got the PS3 was to play Blu-ray and get the good exclusives, It has used that purpose but as a Gaming platform? for me the Xbox 360 wins the trophy, Thoughts?
@NeoJ4K3 Of course visuals aren't everything,if they were Counterstrike and Call Of Duty woulkn't be doing so well.Playability always comes first.Wii and like you said PS2 both outsold their more powerful opposition. I too have all 3 consoles but my brother is the PC gamer, not me. That's where my second argument comes into it,360 sales have always been circled around Halo and a handful of other exclusives (Gears Of War,Mass Effect,Left 4 Dead,Forza Motorsport,Alan Wake and Fable).Mass Effect 2 is coming to PS3,Bungies next title will be on PS3,Steamworks is coming to PS3 so a Left 4 Dead port seems likely (Portal 2 coming to the system),Forza is a great game but Gran Turismo 5 looks to become the dominant racing game this generation,Ps3 won't get Alan Wake but does have games not that far off the mark kike Heavy Rain.Epic games have also shown interest in putting games onto Sonys platform,be it Gears or a new IP. On top of that the PS3 has loads of exclusives where the Xbox 360 offers little similar: Uncharted,God Of War,Killzone,Resistance,Demon's Souls,MGS4,Modnation,MAG,Socom,Little Big Planet,Infamous,Motorstorm,Twisted Metal...etc... PC is sadly suffering from the similar issue of lack or developper support;it's a real shame for PC gamers.
@MEDzZ3RO I just have one thing about your 360 lagging behind statement...Do graphics matter that much to you honestly? I have all three consoles and a PC as well and in my honest opinion i would rather have great playability, great controls, and the fun factor. I am not denying the power of the PS3 as it has finally started coming into its own. The only thing is, the PS3 has great looking exclusives, most third party games are not as good on the console. Graphics don't mean everything, it is a videogame and if it plays better than it looks, i will take that any day. Look at the ps2, grossly underpowered compared to the xbox, gamecube, and it sold outstandingly well, despite the fact it was the most underpowered. Even the Dreamcast (if it would not of died so fast), technologically could have surpassed the PS2 in graphics quality. All about the fun, not a graphics arms race people.
@MEDzZ3RO, I agree, the Xbox 360 does have its major failures and flaws. Owning both platforms I should know the differences well enough, but as a gaming console I prefer the Xbox. Its graphics aren't much worse than the PS3's, it's also cheaper and has more exclusives. I do see what your saying but nothing will change until Sony and Microsoft have released their next console/platform. So until then lets just hope Bungie and other good developers continue to expand and release to multiple platforms. I particularly would like to see PC's make a return.
Lot's of talented people at Bungie, it is the company atmosphere that lets the creative juices flow. Some people from Bungie have left and started another company which is always good for gamers and the gaming industry. 3 Cheers for the next 10 years of gaming goodness that will come from Bungie...
@DeadnBuried Thanks for telling me, seems i read it too fast and missed that part. Anyway, Itīs weird to hear that Bungie is under anotherīs company control now.
I respect Bungie somewhat as a developer, but I never thought much of Halo. It was always a headscratcher for me how such a mediocre story with mediocre gameplay and mediocre graphics became so popular, but Bungie is obviously passionate about games. Here's hoping this new engine and new IP creates something that really blows us away.
@gamerlegend10 As the saying goes "the truth hurts".I was suggesting both PS3 and PC.I never said PS3 was better, take a look. I respect both Halo and Bungie but don't like the game;as a developper they deserve alot of credit.I'd prefer Bungie to work with EA,rather then Activision. See you around :)
One of the few developers out there who know what they're doing, good for you for breaking out on your own.
@MEDzZ3RO im sure it is obvious to anyone that u would start an argument from what u said. u strongly criticized the 360 (basically saying it is not worth getting and ps3 is better) and halo. You are obviously in entitled to your opinion as are we all, but u shouldn't go saying such things (stating them as fact) to people that do like/own the 360 and halo games, as it is very likely to annoy them (and it did).
I still think FPS is not meant for consoles exclusives!! they better come multi-platform. I like playing Halo series. but 360 / PS3 controller twitching my finger. I prefer mouse & keyboard for shooter! I remember playing Kane & Lynch Dog Days on 360. It takes me 1 minutes to properly aim on enemies head. same goes to KillZone they suck harder, when I shoot enemy 4cm far, to the left. wtf enemy suddenly dead (when I'm not aim properly) :? good thing Bungie joined Activision. :) we will get fair share.
@Gamerlegend10 Everyones getting annoyed because they see it as a threat to "their" machine.I own all 3 consoles and a PC and am not afraid to say it how it is.None of the systems are perfect but due to recent industry changes,Microsofts machine is running into trouble. You do realise that both Sony and Microsoft want their machines to have a 10 year life span, that means the 360 has to have hidden resources left in the tank otherwise it's going to get left behind by games like Killzone 3,Gran Turismo 5 and Crysis 2.Halo:Reach is probably the best looking game on 360 but compared to those 3,it's falling behind. That's fact not opinion. I wasn't trying to start a biased argument as it clearly has been percieved. It was meant to be an intelligent discussion but apparently that's too much to ask from some people. I'M DONE.
@Gamerlegend10 The 50% fail rate is actually the average of most the surveys done since it's release. As you know,if the 360 is moved with a disc in,it will scratch it.Not practical if you have animals or mums/partners intent on cleaning. Also,Kinect is promoting kids to jump around the console when on,adding to the issue. Exclusives sell the systems, not specs;that's why PC gaming is in decline at the moment. You have to pay for the Xbox premiums if you want it or not,on PS3 you get the option. Nobody used to ask themselves why to get a 360 because it controlled the HD market and had all the exclusives for the first 3 years.Now,ME2,Valve(L4D),Bungie (Halo) are all coming to PS3.The 360 has Alan Wake and Forza whilst PS3 has Heavy Rain and GT5;on top of this debatebly Vanquish and Quantum Theory offer a great multi-platform alternative to Gears.Aswell as those the PS3 then has Killzone,Resistance,Uncharted,God Of War,MAG (it's beta is improving greatly),Demon's Souls,MGS4,Twisted Metal,LBP,Ratchet and Clank,Motorstorm,Modnation,Socom..etc...,that the 360 doesn't even offer in any of its other games. I too have never said the 360 was/is a bad console but it has always been purchased because of it was first into the market and the latter because of it's exclusives.Without them, everyone can but a PC and/PC and get what 360 offers with less of the cons (I.E:hardware issues, lack of exclusives, yearly online fee).I didn't mention that you can use the 360 controller on PC and PS3 too.
PC #1 360 #2 PS3 # 3 Wii #4 this is the order of my preference of gaming platforms, and it seems to also follow which one I use most. I have not used my Wii in about a year and a half.
When Microsoft gave Bungie big bucks and high expectations, Halo came out. Hopefully it's the same sort of thing between Activision and Bungie. I have a feeling most of the actual development ideas will come from Bungie.
@MEDzZ3RO But i would like to add that i am not against the ps3, it is a really good console an has its advantages over the 360 (as does the 360 over ps3) and i really like some of its games (e.g LBP, MAG (although mag doesn't live up to its potential) etc.). And to be honest no console can ever reach the capabilities of the PC (because a pc can be regularly upgraded) although i do prefer playing on consoles for certain games like shooters etc. And the wii...well actually i do dislike the wii (although it can be fun with friend, but kinect and Move will probably be a lot better) although i am very against fanboys and people trying to force there opinion on everyone else. especially when they do it were it will obviously annoy people.
@MEDzZ3RO the reasons i bought a 360 (and why there are still reasons to get one over ps3) - - it was the first next gen console to come out (and yet still the best in my opinion) - it was a lot (i mean a LOT) cheaper than the ps3 - i preferred the games (except that at the time 360 wasn't supposed to get metal gear solid, FF and a few others (which it has/will)), yes including halo. - Much better online service. (XBL is still better than psn, and dont say its not because everyone know its superior) - a much better controller that feels comfortable and natural in the hand - at the time i got it games were much cheaper than on ps3 and XBLA is better than the ps store. unless u have ps+ which costs far too much for very little (u dont need it to play games, it gives u supposedly free things which u wouldn't have wanted if they were not free, free things are not free as u have to pay for ps+), in which case both consoles are basically even in that aspect.
@MEDzZ3RO "over 50% fail rate (old model)" I assume u have simply made up that '50%'. "new model still has loose disc tray and will scratch discs if care isn't taken." Its not exactly difficult to take care of it all u have to do is not pick it up when it contains a disc. (relatively simple dont u think?) "Lack of exclusives not found on any other system." again i dont think it really matter if the exclusives are on pc as well (when i use the word exclusive i mean exclusive among consoles) "Lack of Bluray discs, resulting in multiple discs being used on games such as Rage" Blu-ray has no real effect on the games (it may when watching a film, but it is a games console after all). And it really is no big deal to switch disc once or twice is it? have we all really got that lazy we cant even switch a disc? "It seems I'm not the only one asking myself "why buy a 360 over a PC or PS3 now?"" everyone asks that when they first buy into a gaming platform (i asked that) but yet still more people choose to buy the 360 over the ps3.
@ MEDzZ3RO ps2 sales were much more than the xbox because sony had already released the ps so it already had a lot of customers. Whereas the xbox was new and so people didn't know much about it and preferred to stick with ps2. But when people did buy the xbox it is obvious they liked it seeing as the 360 then sold hugely (still more sales than the ps3) "All the games you listed are on PC (bar all the Fables) and half are on PS3 or on their way." There are many more games than that, also i dont believe it matters if the games are on pc as well. and those that are going on ps3 are doing so ages after they have been on 360. (and may i add that loads of once supposedly ps exclusive game series have came to (or is going to) the 360 e.g GTA, Metal gear solid, FF etc.) "Rising online prices" the price for XBL has gone down lots and is now simply going back up to its former price.
@godzillavskong First off,I do own all 3 platforms and most of the exclusives on each.Secondly, this page isn't about the 360,it's about Bungie making a new multi-platform IP.I don't like Halo but like alot of Bungies ideas,no doubt all they need is a newer engine.
Well the game still chugs quite a bit in the frame-rate dept actually, the fact is that the current gen systems are based half a decade old GPU and CPU technology and that's huge in the electronics biz.
Finally a new IPO. Bungie has milked its cash cow for about all its worth, barely evolving it from its original iteration. There are good ideas in that company, but limiting themselves to the HALO universe for so long might have killed this company. Unless their next IPO is something their current fanbase can kling to as fervently as Halo, i feel bungie might be done. Think of BIOWARE and what its done to the Star Wars Franchise, Mass Effect, Dragon Age... Yes they are all RPG's. but each is unique in their gameplay, comepletely different as far as story and setting, and each stellar products. Bungie hasn't shown that kind of growth and maturity in their game design solely based on their HALO series. It was one idea beaten to death.
@voldo25: EXACTLY! You're a smart guy. iPhone App store has way many more apps than Android as of now, but you're right, Android has more of what is useful to you [and me too]. Just like that. game library of a console isn't about numbers, but what you [or I want]. I find PS3's library to be better, much much better than X360s. As I said, Alan Wake and Gears, only X360 games I care about.
@the_requiem: why would i invest in an i phone when i have an android phone that does 100 times more than an i phone...for example jailbreak my ps3....all i have to do is get an ipnone rom from my htc evo if i really wanted an iphone. oh and the ipod touch is a waste of money. its an iphone whithout the phone....ill stick to my 160 gig classic thanks.
I wish Bungie would tell us what kind of game it's going to be at least. That way, if it's a shooter, I can completely drop all interest in it right now. XD
Awesome, new engine, new idea, great to see them using their halo success and, well, money toward something like this.
@PcGamingRig Bungie can't do more Halo. Microsoft owns the IP, not Bungie, so they just can't do it. Besides, Bungie has a rule of three, which MS made them violate. So even if they owned Halo, they wouldn't do more of it. Now that they are free of Microsoft, some of the original crew is returning. That's good news, Bungie's best stuff was pre-Microsoft.
from micro$oft to activi$ion, nice move bungie, way to stay independent (sarcasm) wait did I spell that right? LOL
