Bungie speaks out against SOPA

@quantumtheo Why pay anything when you can get it for free? Most people don't pirate media because they are taking a stand against the market price, they do it because it's easy and free. I'm sure that these people that are saving on media aren't putting the extra funds toward worthy causes instead of blowing it on other crap. I'm sick of all of the trendy politique bs that surrounds this issue, and I'm sure that anyone who is involved in real social activism feels the same way. Just to be clear I'm talking about piracy in general, not SOPA specifically which I oppose.

This legislation is just another back door bail out for Hollywood. They don't understand that if they simply charged less for entertainment, ppl would be willing to buy more. If a cd were $5 instead of $15, more ppl might buy 4 cd's at once, instead of feeling ripped off and only buying 1... IF they even buy one! I mean, volume versus high prices should always favor volume when you are talking about the sheer amount of entertainment available to buy. I really do wonder how much sales would increase if iTunes charged 50% less... I'm guessing well more than double. Ugh... The real pirates are in Hollywood and DC.... Also, they just took down Megaupload with the current laws... doesn't that prove that this bill is intended to do something else???

I see nothing in this article or in SOPA/PIPA that would prevent Bungie from making a Halo game. I also don't see the systematic shutdown of all things internet, although the looseness of the bill certainly leaves it open for serious abuse. Which, by all accounts, needs to be addressed should this happen. I will say, this reminds me of another rough spun bill of vagaries that was supposed to "fix" health care.

This is great, rather than fix the damn economy they worry about internet piracy, the US has a scary future.

It won't pass. The US government is slowly taking away our rights. As long as we have our 1st and 2nd amendments, we can take our country back.

@Cronicx- Yes, I'd imagine that disagreeing with most people is grounds for me needing therapy. Who ever heard of "minorities"? Just one last thing: if you're going to get upset about me writing a lot--which, by the way, is usually what people who think hardest about these issues do--and declare I should get lost from this forum, you're basically trying to "censor" me out of it. Strange for someone who doesn't want the government doing the same thing. You can't have it both ways. If disagreement is an essential part of debate that you're worried government will quash, don't try to quash it yourself.

I stopped reading after page 46, this is no good. The internet should not be able to "govern" the internet. This SOPA bill is essentially just that, allowing the Government to control the internet. Of course the federal government can legally block forign sites that are activily violating US IP laws, the same way that it could for a child porn site. Sure the means being used here is sloppy and draconinan, but you can't serously believe that the goal is illegitimate. All of this talk about protecting freedom of speech is misplaced. Pirate sites are engaged in giving away other people's products (or speech) without their permission. And if you think that congress is doing this on its own, without serious industry pressure to do so, then you're a fool.

I read the bill it can pass without disrupting the first admindment by how it is worded. but we can try to stop it by contacting our senators

That bill is 77 pages long, but I will still try and read it to actually understand what they are trying to do.

I'm really annoyed with Skyrim how I need to connect to Steam to play it. It says Connecting to account: for about 5 minutes than it says Steam stopped responding! I liked the good old days when all you had to do was pop in the disc and press the button then you were playing the game. Too many online difficulties these days. I hate it.

Typical government move. They are slowly taking control of everything. I know that our "gamer demographic" is seen as lazy and unconcerned with things. Well now it effects us all so we need to speak out against this power grab.

Most people are going mad about this but completely missing the new Cookie Legislation in the EU and UK. Come May 2012 all websites for companies based in the UK / EU that store your information via cookies (i.e user information, your preferences that kind of thing) are banned from using them unless they forewarn you of every single cookie they use and explain what its for. Enjoy having 5 or so alerts to every site you visit.

I agree with Bungie when they said they are opposed to any legislation that curtails free speech, stifles innovation, and prevents the open sharing of information on the Internet. These things are what make the internet great and fun. Without these the internet wouldn't be the internet we love today, it'd be a machine nothing more nothing less.

@tahashaikh15 I'd like to know where you read that.... It's funny I just read an article saying that SOPA has been shelved indefinitely in its current form. I certainly hope you're not trying to misinform people to get them to your webpage. Even if it were in effect how would liking your page do anything?

@dxBIGBOSSxb Not only that but Canada doesn't have the military strength to stop it's citizens from taking down parliament. Besides, even with all the guns, we know not to use them on each other.

What many of these articles aren't mentioning is that SOPA won't actually stop piracy at all; it doesn't involve any means of actually shutting down the illegal download sites, all it does is force ISPs and search engines to cut off people's access to those sites. If people still want to torrent stuff, they'll still be able to easily get to those sites through IP addresses and proxies. A smarter and more effective way of combating piracy would be to cut off those website's ability to process payments and collect revenue through advertising.

SOPA is a threat to anyone using the Internet. It has 0% to do with stopping piracy but 100% with censorship and the government controlling the biggest, most independent source of information: The Web.
