dang too bad .. its on the wii tho and the developers at nintendo are just as uptight as the protesters... think about that one.
Rockstar's controversial prep-school drama will be released this year; source says Xbox version bullied out of production.
When the word "controversy" springs up in a discussion about gaming, the name Rockstar Games can't be too far behind. With games like Grand Theft Auto, The Warriors, and State of Emergency in its portfolio, the publisher has been the frequent target of watchdog groups concerned with exposing younger audiences to violence.
Feathers were further ruffled when Rockstar announced it was developing Bully. The long-in-development game is set in a fictional prep school and stars a 15-year-old boy who must deal with all types of high school characters, including geeks, jocks, and bullies. Players will defend themselves against other students with weapons, but the fight scenes don't feature any blood or fatalities, reports Reuters.
Though few people outside of Rockstar have even seen the game, opposition toward the game's release has been very vocal, saying that impressionable youths will almost certainly engage in copycat schoolyard fights. The game has drawn protests from the Peaceoholics, a concerned youth group, and the British police, both of whom called for the game's ban.
Despite the obstacles, Rockstar Games quietly continued development of the game and will release it in October, according to Reuters.
"Finally Bully can speak for itself. People can look at the game and see what it is and what it's not," Rockstar spokesman Rodney Walker told the news service.
The game was originally scheduled for release on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox but may now be a PS2 exclusive. A source told GameSpot today that the Xbox version, as speculated, has been canceled.
i pray to god that they release it for 360 because if one more angry whiney little fool starts complaining about this and that in video games and makes another good game get canceled im gonna kill someone Gcorndog the push pin is for scribling on the wood and im not quite sure what the pencil and paper clip is for yet
It isn't Rockstar that lets the kids play it. An M rating means 17 years or older. Before that is at parents' discretion. Let parents decide what their kids can and can't play. There's such a thing as freedom of expression, and Rockstar knows that.
Skullkid360: "a pathetic game like Bully, created soley (and soul-less-ly, I might add,) to further Rockstar's label as a controversial producer. " I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd say he's refreshed that a game company wants to "cross the line" or break borders regarding game development. Sure, Rockstar is a controversial producer, but only insofar as their titles are unconventional - is Table Tennis controversial? Why shouldn't there be games with a Prep School setting? This sounds great to me. I teach at a Prep School and although I'd agree that parents should *always* monitor their children's access to media, there's no excuse to condemn games due to material that is controversial. I'll withhold discussion of souls.
Has anyone explored the Bully website? When you go to the Bullworth Prospectus page, it takes you to a desk that has a school handbook placed on it. Notice the broken pencil, pushpin, and paper clip. You can pick up all of these items, but what for? Anyone locate some possible secrets about this site?
FYI, the official Bully site has been updated. They have a school prospectus, screenshots, a new trailer and some misc. videos up. It's looking very good indeed. LOL, I just scooped Gamespot!
Shame they pulled the Box version, I would liked to have given it a spin, though I find I don't care for R* games as much anymore. I don't mind the violence, but the increasing emphasis on sex and profainity (from San Andreas and games in general) is getting a bit tiresome and comes off (many times) as just trying to hard to be "edgy." I don't mind adult material, but I like it in the context of a good story like Indigo Prophecy. Even San Andreas was tolerable in that it told a good story. I just want to go back to the days of DOOM when you could melt the flesh off things without having to hear f-bombs every 5 seconds. As for content of games making children act violently, maybe the inverse is true. We live in a society that has taken life lightly and sex and violence are cultural staples (at least in the US, however we may deny it) and perhaps it's not games making kids violent, but a culture of violent people and kids enjoying violent games. Not everyone who plays MANHUNT has a snuff collection, but it's probably a fair bet that snuff afficionados enjoy MANHUNT. So maybe BULLY gets played by people who were gonna shoot up the school anyway, not the other way around. I
Games like Bully, God of War, and GTA can all be played by kids. Don't automatically assume (I'm looking at you desahra) that anyone young will be corrupted beyond repair by pixelated organs. I'm 14 and have been playing games like Grand Theft Auto before I was a teenager, and I've never even punched someone in the face before. The most I did was slap a guy in the back for saying that I was gay (especially since he's my friend, and has a tendency to say insulting stuff without care). Don't assume that because I'm under 18 I feel like shooting people and running them over in a bus.
Oh man, that sucks, hopefully if it isn't released for X-Box at the same time it is for Play Station 2 they'll release it later in the year...
Are you joking? No good games on 360? Have you played Oblivion, Perfect Dark Zero, Burnout Revenge, Kameo, GRAW, Far Cry: Instincts Predator, Dead Rising, Table-Tennis, DOA 4, Prey? Need i go on!? I believe that currently, the 360 is probably ahead in the games department, followed by the DS. I have a PSP and wish more decent games would be released as Gangs of London and Vice City Stories are the only games currently interesting me. Some decent PSP games are marred by horrible loading, like SmackDown and Midnight Club. The games are supposed to be played on the move, so why make me sit through up to a minute (or more) of loading? Sort it out, Sony! Anyways, the point is the 360 definitely has decent games. And i'm disappointed Bully isn't coming to 360 (or XBox for that matter, as it might have been made backwards compatible).
Quote: morororo "Nice one. No xbox version so the PS2 can continue to thrash the 360 (no decent games on 360 and no games coming out on Xbox). The DS can thrash them both cause thats the only system releasing good games. Sad for Microsoft releasing their next gen machine so early, competing with and losing to the current gen playstation before the real next gen war starts." If that's the case, then why would 360 game sales crack the top 10 month after month? The Xbox 360 system is only in 2 million homes in the US vs. the PS2's 50 million, yet games like GRAW, Fight Night 3, and Oblivion are continually outselling most PS2 titles. Sounds to me like PS2 is getting thrashed by the new kid on the block.
Quote: Neo_Strife100 "Xbox is dead and not playing a game on one system just because it has slighty worse graphics is the most idiotic thing i've ever heard." Not idiotic at all. I have all three current gen systems and Xbox 360. I prefer the Xbox controller to the PS2 and realize that multiplatform games available for both PS2 and Xbox play and look better in general on Xbox. If given the choice, I'd always buy the Xbox version. It's my preference. I've pretty much stopped buying current gen games because few upcoming titles interest me. The fact that Bully has been canned for Xbox means I probably won't bother with it since my PS2 generally collects dust except for when I use it as a backup DVD player. I'd much rather play it on Xbox or 360 in b/c mode with enhanced graphics.
morororo- the only game ive played on both the pc and the 360 is GRAW and it is faaaaaaarrrrrrr better on the 360. skullkid360- all i really play is shooters, the more realistic the better.my favorte series are Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six,i also play alot of the WWII games,Splinter Cell,.occasionally i play a sports game or racing, and once in awhile i'll get into a more sci-fi shooter like Halo[original],Red Faction[original],or a Deus Ex,but mostly realistic shooters. no i dont/didnt like any of the FF games,Kingdom Hearts,God of War,or really any fantasy type games.
Here's the thing, guys: It's a game for adults. Don't buy it for your kids. Moreover, don't let your buddies' kids play it, or even watch you play it. We all had that kid over 18 who got the cool games or the kid whose parents bought him anything to shut him up or Dad's friend who has the awesomest games. Don't be *that* guy. And above all, don't let these kids see you praising the game for being so violent. I love violent games, loved God of War, but it's not for kids, guys. And that's our responsibility to keep it out of their hands.
Looks like it might have some decent story elements. Looking forward to seeing what the game's like.
Jermwarfare: im not saying a "kiddy" game cant be good, just that im not interested in it.finding nemo may have been an excellent animated film, but that doesnt mean i wanna watch it.i like games i can relate to,things like jolly fat italian plumbers or effeminate boys with swords dont interest me. Me: So... then I suppose you don't like Final Fantasy either. If any males are lacking in the "Y" chromosome area, it's the ones from Final Fantasy. It's just an art style. Anyways, If you only like games that you can relate to, that would most likely narrow it down to, what... the Sims? I suppose if your in the millitary you can somewhat relate to FPS's but other than that, who can relate to Kratos or Solid Snake or Master Chief more than they can Link? Mario... not so much granted. The only difference is that the former characters are older than the later. Otherwise they are all equally unrelatable to the common gamer. But anyways, to me you sound like so many other people who make fun of Nintendo and how they are "just for kids" just because it's the cool thing to do, and because you are not secure enough with yourself that you would be caught dead playing a game that you might have to defend against someone such as yourself on the basis that, although the main character is a kid, or maybe the graphics are a little too colorful and anime-styled, it is, infact, fun and worth playing. Much more so that a pathetic game like Bully, created soley (and soul-less-ly, I might add,) to further Rockstar's label as a controversial producer. And by the way, no Nintendo fan that I know is under the delusion that Nintendo has a monopoly on anything, aside from morals. Maybe they bought-out Rockstar's. I don't believe that violent games can cause violent behavoir by themselves, and therefore I don't have a huge problem with GTA, but making a game about kids beating each other up is just stupid. You see this line? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rockstar just crossed it.
NOOooooo, I cant see any future for Xbox now.......There's just too many games canceled for (old) Xbox. Microsoft doesn't done thier job well in 'protecting' the (old) xbox users. No games left for us to play.
!@&$# that !@&%$, the parents are woried because of this game when their sons are figthing in wars, stupid a.s.s.h.o.l.e.s
Jermwarfare: No I dont have a 360, I do want one but only when it has games that are better than the pc versions. Everygame that has come out on both 360 and PC the PC version has been better. Once the exclusives come to 360 I'll be there. I'm talking from experience, remember the dreamcast being the first 128bit machine but came too early and ended up being beaten by the 32/64 bit generation. Stop being such a fan boy, you numpty. I will buy all the systems when I can afford them, like I do each generation.
what a hideous game. rockstar make money, no problem there, but this just furthers the idea that all gamers are violent thugs, ready to snap at a seconds notice and grab a weapon. violence = cool, does it? nice one Rockstar you idiots. BrownStar more like.
i can certainly understand why parents would be worried about a game where you're a bully who goes around and kicks peoples asses. i've had no problem with earlier Rockstar games but this seems like it may be crossing the line simply because it's about children fighting each other.

The DS can thrash them both cause thats the only system releasing good games. Sad for Microsoft releasing their next gen machine so early, competing with and losing to the current gen playstation before the real next gen war starts." handheld gaming is only good for road trips.the 360 has some great games out,let me guess you dont even have one?.....pathetic.
I bet there is probably alot they excluded from the game, wish they would do a unrated version like movies do now. This is almost like the "Passion of the Christ" of video games since it's the first to recieve notible controversey before it was even released. We live in a world full of retarted people and the way public schools are, more will keep coming.
I'm interested in it. I just hope Rockstar didn't water it down just to avoid backlash from these groups.
XBOX version canned? Well, what does that tell us? If it's only for the PS2, naturally it's going to reach and influence uneducated and unsupervised urban children whom are already prone to violence.

Sad for Microsoft releasing their next gen machine so early, competing with and losing to the current gen playstation before the real next gen war starts. Anyhoo, this game will sell loads as it's a controversial game from Rockstar. Everyone will buy it despite it being fairly crap like all of Rockstars games. Don't get me wrong, GTA is good but thats cause it's such a big package of things to do, strip it down and its utter crap. Driving is really weak, on foot section makes me want to kill real people, not influenced by it, just cause its so irritating! But somehow its fun in the end. Maybe this will be fun too.
..........Wait. I've waited all this time to get this game and now it's being released and there might not be an Xbox verison? This really sucks. I've been wanting this game for awhile now. Damn it all.
"You aint no ************* buuully... And I aint bowing to no ************* buuully, I won't allow it, aint no coward to no buuully, I'll be damned if I don't stand up to a buuully, Fight like a man and throw my hands up to a buuully-ii-iii-iiiiiii... ... ..." They should get rights to use Eminem's song for the game's Theme... that'd ROCK!
Its REALLY bad that fights have no blood or fatality. Whats the point of fights without them? And why only a PS2 version? The only good news is release of the game afterall but... No BLOOD? No XBOX?
