Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 to be reimagined into new IP

Gearbox says game's new direction will see it move away from the Brothers in Arms franchise into all-new territory.

Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford has announced that the upcoming Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 will shed its Brothers in Arms legacy to be reimagined into an all-new IP.

Speaking at a PAX Prime panel in Seattle this week (and as originally reported by Polygon), Pitchford says the original idea for the upcoming game evolved away from the core of the Brothers in Arms franchise and needed to be "unshackled" from the brand.

Pitchford confirmed that the upcoming title will be an all-new IP, and more details about the new game will be made public at Gearbox's upcoming community day in Dallas, Texas, on September 15.

Earlier this year, Gearbox announced that the release of Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 would be delayed to 2013. At the time, Pitchford said development on the game had evolved and that gamers would be "surprised by what they see."

Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 was to be the first new instalment in the Brothers in Arms franchise since 2008's well-received Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway. The game was set to take place during World War II, following a band of four soldiers chasing Hitler.

Although I love historically accurate and realistic WWII video games, I don't think that means we have to eliminate any game that takes "creative liberties" in order to offer a mindless, purely entertainment based shooter. WWII is such a FUN setting. I agree that they should drop "Brothers In Arms" from the title, but why is there such animosity toward the game itself? If you only like serious dramatic and story driven shooters that's fine. But I don't think its fair to assume that it is the way everyone feels or that it is the way everyone SHOULD feel. I don't see anything wrong with a WWII game that isn't realistic or historically accurate. I am not using video games to learn history anyway.

Are you even listening to what you're saying??

Omg, and there's a lack of FPS's on the market?

Come on get a grip, we don't need another CoD like FPS.

I think this is going to rock.

@VendettaSRB Brothers in arms in NOTHING like Call of Duty 1 and 2.   The gameplay mechanics are completely different.  If you tried to play BIA like COD wouldn't even make it past the first mission.  The only thing they have in common is they are both WWII FPS.

VendettaSRB
VendettaSRB

Erm, yes I did, and I can easily compare it to CoD 1 and 2. There's no way you can compare a game that old with modern FP shooters, but if they chose to make one, I'm betting you it would be a lot like MW. @m1rock  @VendettaSRB  @slayerSS-3

@m1rock  @VendettaSRB I've never compare brothers in arms with COD I was talking about the new ip for brothers in arm that they want it to be like cod...

I believe it was a good idea to make this game into an original IP. I know many people, as well as myself, were upset how this game could be considered a BIA game; It worked out for the best. :) Still want to give it a play :)

Finally....something in the gaming industry that actually isn't whiny, complaining, or outwright ridiculous. Good job Gearbox...this game needs to seperate itself from the BIA franchise as clearly they aren't related.

huge fan of the Brothers In Arms series..... I was broken hearted to hear about this game however I feel like I still have to play it.... as long as they don't abandon the classic BIA

Whether you like how this game looks or not, this is a good move by Gearbox.

@kex72 Oh you hate it? Well I have to assume you've played the game because there is no reason to hate them game really if you haven't played it (or a rational reason anyways) so either you got to play the game before they announced the release date or your projecting so hard we could shove a USB up your ass and show off PowerPoints.

I'm happy about this move. The tone of furious 4 was too different to the BIA games. I hope to see another entry in the BIA franchise.

Hell's Highway was a very good game and showed a good example of the horrors of war, which not all FPS's do. not having played the previous games, i didn't understand the characters backstory, so i was a bit lost at times.anyway, i don't know much about Furious 4, but the prospect of another BinA was good news.

ThePowerOfHAT
ThePowerOfHAT

This is good news for the BiA franchise.  I was very worried that Furious 4 was going to take things in such a drastically different direction that the realism and mature tone of the BiA games would be lost forever.  Lots of fans called for removing the BiA name from this new game, and it's nice to see Gearbox listened.

Brothers in in Arms was one of the very few WW 2 franchise that had such a serious mature tone. This is completely the opposite, I am not saying I don't like the direction, but they shouldn't call it Brothers in Arms but make a new IP and keep Brothers in Arms the way it was.

@Gamer_4_Fun Ya it looks like its going to be a lot of fun, but even as someone who never really played BinA (its on my to do list, don't worry) I can tell just from what little I knew that this is more than taking a series in a new direction, its making it a completely new series but giving it the same name.

WHY on earth aren't they making a new BIA game? I played all the other ones, got invested int he story and they leave us hanging with ONE GAME left. Seriously all that i sleft is battle of the bulge, they set up a huge arc in the storyline for the guys and then just......nothing since then.

TimboII

Good, because this was a terrible idea for a BiA game....why did they ever imagine fans would swallow it? It's about the same as if they had tried to call borderlands a BiA game.

vault-boy

@DJKrayz_basic Its completely different from the originals in tone, theme and presentation. The only real similarities they seem to have is being set in WWII, so making it a new IP makes sense. You wouldn't call the old CoDs and MoHs the same series and they where way more similar than Hell's Highway and Furious 4.

I am still interested in this game, and I am still wish Gearbox would make BiA 4 or maybe a HD collection for 360 and PS3 that includes Earned in Blood and Road to Hill 30 remastered in HD and heck maybe even throw in Hell's Highway.

@LonelyHippie27 I think now that we've had some time to get away from the draught of WWII games it will be nice to see a few come back. I mean the last big WWII game was World at War and that was what 4 or 5 years ago? Right now the 'modern shooter' today is what the WWII shooter was last generation.

As if the news on this game couldn't get any worse... I'm thankful it's no longer trying to be BIA, but "all new territory" can't be good news for this game

Gearbox is a fantastic company. When they do something wrong, or something that people don't like, they cut their losses, admit their mistakes, and fix the problem. We don't think Furious 4 fits with Brothers in Arms? Okay, it'll be a new IP. This kind of relationship builds up trust between the developer and consumer, which in turn allows them to try something unique, interesting, or just plain insane, and still have a lot of support. This isn't just good for Brothers in Arms, it helps the creativity of the industry as a whole.

Makes sense, considering that the Brothers in Arms series is known for its gritty realism and tactical gameplay.  Furious 4 probably won't be either of those things (certainly not realistic).  I'd still love to see a proper Brothers in Arms sequel some day.

you can name it "inglourious basterds the game" for all i care, im already interested.... now how about a new BIA or the Duke Nukem (no folks not a port of a cancelled pc game from 1997 like DNF was [this coming from some one who loves DNF]) game that Gearbox ACTUALLY made

Good to see they came to their senses and realized that the game hardly had anything to do with BIA. If only more devs also realized this instead of bastardizing their IP's.
