GameSpot's New Video Player
- Posted Nov 20, 2009 12:53 pm PT

Last week we rolled out a major update to our video player. In fact, we rebuilt it from the ground up. Here are some of the improvements and changes we've recently made.
Bigger Is Better: We've increased the size of our standard videos from 480px wide to 640px wide. In addition, this means we've opened up the 700k bitrate to all users.
Cleaner HD: The HD button now expands the player on the page, rather than reloading the entire page. This will get you back and forth between our two player sizes that much more quickly.
Larger Toolbar: We've made our user-interaction toolbar larger and moved it to beneath the player, as well as increased the size of the buttons and icons. Plus, we've added a new Twitter button for those of you who are into that sort of thing.
More Menu Options: Our Advanced Options menu will give you full control over customizing your video experience. We offer five different bitrates now and three different streaming options. You can read more about all of it in our new FAQ. Plus, we've added a new player icon to let you know what bitrate you're watching at all times.
Bigger Embedded Video: We've increased the size of our embedded video player, as well as included an option to grab an extra-large 640px wide player. Both of these players can be grabbed from the Embed menu.
Cleaner GameSpot Integration: We've cleaned up wherever you see the player embedded into our own stories and articles. We've removed the advertisement that sat beneath the player, thus decreasing the overall height of the area.
Behind the Scenes: We're now operating off of Flash Player 10, the most recent and robust version of Adobe's ubiquitous media software.
We're committed to bringing you the best video quality possible in the best viewing experience possible, and we've got some other plans down the road that we're excited about. Of course we know our work will never be done (we're working on fixing a nagging issue for Chrome browsers right now), so keep giving us your feedback.

Modern Warfare 2 Game Launch

Earlier this week Ryan Mac Donald was throwing his hands up in the air with anticipation for the release of Modern Warfare 2. His anticipation was so overwhelming that he posted three videos in his blog. The pre-launch video has a quick comparison about real guns. The game launch video shows what went down at the GameStop store located in downtown San Francisco.
Lastly, there is also an aftermath video in which Homer Rabara and Ryan Mac Donald share their reactions to the night-vision goggles that were included in the Prestige edition of Modern Warfare 2.

Latest Video Features

There are a few features you might have missed recently. Let us know what you think and if you would like to see more of them!
Sophia Tong invaded Chow.com's kitchen to test the culinary pros in Food Network: Cook or Be Cooked. The feature displays a comparison on how real this game is compared to cooking in real time. Be sure to share this feature with any of your culinary friends!
In honor of the upcoming release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, we had to relive our favorite moments from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
GameSpot often has games we play so much that it ruins our social lives. The 10 games in this feature scare us because we love them so much. Nothing else seems to matter when we're playing them.
Additionally, if you did not get a chance to watch GameSpot's Zombie Squad film trailer, it's a fun skit about two guys just trying to make it. -
BioShock 2 character details.

Our recent interview with Jordan Thomas for BioShock 2 yielded these two excerpts, where he described two non-player characters that you will meet in BioShock 2. There were no assets to go along with these, and their inclusion would have made the final video quite lengthy, but we just thought they were too interesting not to post at all.

Last Friday's one hour game play marathon for Brutal Legend was well received; Tim Schafer and Erik Robson from Double fine dropped by to talk about the game. What was even more exciting those who had a chance to win a Brutal Legend figure based on participating in the trivia. We'd like to give a shout out to Jaes Overley and Jeremy Magobet for answering the question accurately in a timely manner. -

In the last couple episodes of Today On the Spot, we've been teasing a grand trivia competition for a super rad PC that was supposed to begin today. Unfortunately, there was a disconnect between us and our legal team (contests can be very complicated legal affairs), and as a result, we've had to delay this competition until next Thursday.
Sorry to everyone who tuned in today for the content!

PAX 2009. Another great event is in the can.
- Posted Sep 8, 2009 1:35 pm PT
Just got back from Seattle, WA where the GameSpot crew was out covering the Penny Arcade Expo 2009, and what a great event that was. This was my first PAX and it was really great to be surrounded by so many people that were so excited about all forms of gaming. When you attend so many events geared specifically for the gaming press, it's very easy to forget that there are so many more people out there that would love to be in your shoes, doing what we get to do and seeing what we get to see. It's great to attend an event which is obviously geared towards the people who these games are created for... the people who are the most passionate about games.. all the gamers out there who travel distances far and wide to be able to attend an event like PAX. It was a great reminder that, as we work to get through all the videos we shot at PAX, there are people all over the world that wished they could have been there. It's our job to try and give them a taste of what this event was like. In addition to all the cool stuff that you saw hitting the site this past weekend like demos for great games like Forza Motorsport 3, Star Wars the Old Republic, MAG, Ratchet and Clank Future: a Crack in Time, and DeathSpank, you'll be seeing the wonderful keynote by co-creator of Money Island Ron Gilbert, the LucasArts/BioWare SW:TOR live presentation in its entirety, more interviews and demos, and a wrap up piece for TOTS making their way on to the site. Hopefully all of our hard work will help you bring a bit of PAX into your lives and make you remember why you're so obsessed about games. It sure helped me.

Minor Delay With TOTS Saturday Episode
- Posted Aug 22, 2009 4:06 pm PT
Hey everyone,
Just wanted to give you a quick notice about the delay of the Saturday show. You might have noticed that the timeer has changed to display the show as starting an hour later than planned.
As you know, we're getting accustomed with our new format of three days a week. Unfortunately, there was a little hang up from one of our machines that works the magic in making the new show. We are expecting to have the show up a little after 5pm PT.
Please check in by posting that you kindly read this notice and if you didnt get the emblem for posting feedback for the season premiere, I'll grant the season premiere TOTS emblem for the inconvenience. Thanks for your patience during this time.NOTE: The emblem will only be granted up until the timestamp of the show being avaiable for viewing.

On The Spot Returns!
- Posted Aug 17, 2009 7:05 pm PT
Howdy Everyone,
Welcome to the Producer's Note, our new blog dedicated to all things video, including our new show starting this Thursday at 4:00 p.m. called Today On the Spot!
If you've been coming to the site regularly, you know we've produced a weekly live show for the past four and a half years called On the Spot. The show began as an attempt to bring our audience closer to what we see and do every day: seeing the latest and greatest games, getting the news straight from the source, and covering events as they unfold live. The original idea was to simply have a unique way to communicate back and forth with our audience once a week. Nearly five years later, it's time to build a better show.
Today On the Spot will still be very similar to the show you remember, but now you'll have three new episodes every week. Each Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 4:00 p.m., we'll be posting a new episode that will run about 15 minutes in length. Each of the three show days--Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday--will have a mix of old and new segments rotating in along with the news, demo, and trivia you've come to expect. Your favorite segments from OTS, like Import Friendly and Starting Block, will return, but we've been busy dreaming up all kinds of new stuff that you'll hopefully agree is pretty awesome.
Although the new show may not be a live broadcast, we're making sure that you'll have the opportunity to interact with us. You can still send us questions and comments like before, but we're also going to be on the lookout for cool original video content that you send us. If we like what you send our way, we might include all or some of your content in future episodes. On top of that, one of our new segments will be a member's spotlight that will single out remarkable members of the community.
The new format gives us more flexibility with the content we produce and leaves the door open for live events too. In addition, check this blog regularly for a behind-the-scenes look at the show and for a peek at some director's cut videos featuring stuff that didn't make it to air. Did we mention better prizes, guests, and segments? Tune in this Thursday, because the first few to submit a correct answer to our trivia questions will win either a deluxe edition of Batman: Arkham Asylum or a Shadow Complex download code.
While we could go on and on, let's just say that your show has returned, and we're looking to have some fun. One thing hasn't changed: The best part of Today On the Spot will be our interaction with you, so let your voice be heard, and send an e-mail to onthespot@gamespot.com .
