Madballs, Secrets of Monkey Island sail onto XBLA

It's a week of comebacks on Xbox Live Arcade this week. Headlining the downloadable game service's Wednesday update is a revamp of an '80s toy line and a vintage adventure game nearing its 20th anniversary.
Playbrain's Madballs in Babo: Invasion is an action adventure game where players take control of characters inspired by the toy line of foam balls with faces on them. It is also the first XBLA game to offer in-game avatar support at the time of release and features 16-player online matches and 21 multiplayer maps. The game costs 800 Microsoft points ($10).
Another throwback, The Secrets of Monkey Island: Special Edition is a reboot of the original 1990 title. Developed by LucasArts, this adventure game includes several new changes, like revamped high-res hand-painted art, "close-up" cutscenes during dialogue sequences, full-speech voice acting, and a brand new score recorded from live instruments. Purist players can also revert the graphics back to the pixelated style of the original game. The Secrets of Monkey: Special Edition has a price tag of 800 Microsoft points ($10).
Lastly, pedaling onto XBLA is Cyanide's Tour de France 2009. Cyclists can choose from 18 official teams and race through 21 of the tour's official legs. This bike-sim costs 800 Microsoft points ($10).

Economist, analyst spar over cost of Madden NFL exclusivity
- Posted Jul 15, 2009 2:38 pm PT
As a class-action lawsuit against Electronic Arts alleging "blatantly anticompetitive conduct" due to an NFL exclusivity agreement, one of the key questions is how much the publisher's practices have cost ordinary consumers. Common sense would suggest it's impossible to put an exact figure on how much extra gamers were made to spend on football games in a different hypothetical scenario, but that's not going to stop the various parties from trying.
Earlier this week, GamePolitics reported on an estimate of that number made by University of Michigan economist Dr. Jeffrey MacKie-Mason. According to MacKie-Mason's estimates, EA overcharged gamers between $701.5 million and $926 million over the alleged stretch of anticompetitive behavior.
EA attorneys responded to that estimate in a court filing by calling it a work of "pure fiction," a sentiment echoed today by Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter.
"What kind of fool is this [University] of Michigan economics professor," Pachter said in an e-mail to GamePolitics, adding, "I rarely read anything that gets me so incensed... They may have some odd estimates I'm not aware of, but based on what you printed, they should be embarrassed. You can quote me."
To explain his incredulity, Pachter noted that Madden games have sold 23 million units since 2006 (the period in question), with total retail sales of just over $1 billion. Assuming that 20 percent of the revenue went to the stores who sold the games, that leaves EA with about $800 million in revenue from the sales.
"How in the world does [MacKie-Mason] conclude that EA overcharged by more than they generated," Pachter asked.
It's worth noting that Pachter and MacKie-Mason used different sources for their sales numbers. Pachter based his Madden sales figures on the industry-tracking NPD Group's data, while MacKie-Mason used worldwide sales figures from the publicly accessible VGChartz. The NPD Group receives its data directly from retailers and extrapolates to account for non-participants like Wal-Mart, while VGChartz divines its estimates based on polls of gamers, retailers, and publishers; historical sales trends of similar games; and fluctuation of resale prices.

For those who've particularly enjoyed the storyline of Halo franchise, the newest Halo Wars add-on update may be a welcome addition. Microsoft recently announced a new map pack called Historic Battles, which includes four maps that chronicle the pivotal moments of the UNSC/Covenant War. Along with the four maps, the pack adds four new achievements to Microsoft's Halo-themed strategy game. The add-on is due out on July 21 for 800 Microsoft points ($10) on Xbox Live.
In the one-on-one map Barrens, the landscape forms corridors that become densely packed kill zones, and the map features a Forerunner artifact that will lend a significant advantage to its possessor. Another one-on-one map, Blood River, allows players to secure bases on riverside cliffs and fight over two narrow crossings. The pack also features Memorial Basin, a two-versus-two map with high ground in the center of the playfield, and the three-versus-three Glacial Ravine, which contains a mountain pass guarded by two controllable energy walls.
Historic Battles also includes four new achievements that are worth 100 GamerScore points. The details for each achievement can be found on the official Xbox Web site.

$150 Modern Warfare 2 bundle packs in night-vision goggles

After the success of premium-priced Guitar Hero bundles, Activision is preparing a holiday slate chock-full of games with peripherals packed in. In addition to Guitar Hero 5, the publisher has big-ticket bundles for Tony Hawk Ride, Band Hero, and DJ Hero.
While the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 may not lend itself to the bundled controller business model, Activision and developer Infinity Ward are preparing the next best thing: an over-the-top limited-edition release. As revealed this week by an Infinity Ward YouTube video, Modern Warfare 2 will come in three different packages, the most extravagant of which--the Prestige Edition--will feature working night-vision goggles.
The video, hosted by Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling, lays out the content of the regular Modern Warfare 2 release, the Hardened Edition, and the Prestige Edition. The Hardened Edition will come packed in a metallic case with an art book featuring concept sketches and other details from the game's development. It also includes a downloadable code for the original Call of Duty on PC, Xbox 360, or PlayStation 3. Though the Prestige Edition remains unpriced, Bowling's Twitter page lists the Hardened Edition as selling for $80.
The Prestige Edition will come with the special Hardened edition of the game, the Modern Warfare 2-branded goggles, and a sculpted head to display the pack-in when not in use. North American retailers like GameStop, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and Amazon.com are currently accepting preorders for the regular and Hardened editions of Modern Warfare 2 but have yet to list the Prestige Edition.
[UPDATE]: In another post on his Twitter,Bowling revealed the suggested retail price of the Prestige Edition package will be $149. Additionally, he specified that the console editions of the original Call of Duty will include the game's full multiplayer features.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is set for a November 10 debut. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Nintendo's WiiWare original game service is in for a busy week, as three new games populate its library. Headlining the slate is Konami's Ant Nation, a strategy game in which players condition a colony of ants to withstand brutal torture at the hands of 10-year-olds everywhere. Players will be able to wield lasers, magnifying glasses, and bolts of lightning to aid them in the survival of the fittest simulator, which is available for 700 Wii points ($7).
Ant Nation is joined on WiiWare by Bplus' Bit Boy, an adventure game where players progress through a variety of progressively more technologically advanced environments. Featuring a cooperative mode for up to two players, Bit Boy can be bought for 600 Wii points ($6). Lastly, JV Games has released Incoming!. Available for 500 Wii points ($5), the strategy game pits up to two players in a competitive tank-combat game.
The Wii's Virtual Console will be reviving two retro games this week. From Sega's Master System comes Secret Command, a two-player shooter that can be purchased for 600 Wii points ($6). Pulseman, an action-platformer originally released for the Sega Genesis, costs 900 Wii points ($9).
Nintendo's DSiWare sees one release this week in the form of Gameloft's Brain Challenge. The puzzle game costs 800 DSi points ($8 ) and presents 48 minigames spanning five categories: math, logic, focus, memory, and visual. The game also features Stress mode, which tests players multitasking abilities.

Sony gets Netflix streaming...for Bravia HDTVs

Ever since Netflix video streaming came to the Xbox 360, Microsoft has been touting it as a major advantage over its competing consoles. However, recent months have seen rumors of the DVD mail-rental company's online arm coming to both the Wii and PlayStation 3.

Today, Sony announced that it has struck a deal with Netflix to enable streaming its some of its high-end electronic devices. Unfortunately for many gamers, the contraptions in question do not include the PS3, but rather a range of the company's high-end Bravia HDTVs. According to a report on GameSpot sister site CNET, the XBR9 series, Z5100 series, and W5100 series of Bravias will all be updated with Netflix streaming software this fall. Other Sony HDTVs can access the service by buying the Sony Bravia Internet Video Link for about $200--or just pay $99.99 for a Roku set-top video player.
Speaking with GameSpot, Sony declined to directly comment on the prospect of Netflix streaming on the PS3. Instead, a rep offered the following blanket statement on the console's non-gaming entertainment capabilities:
We are always looking for ways to enhance our video entertainment offerings through PlayStation 3. Currently, our video download service, available through the PlayStation store, boasts over 1,900 movies and 9,000 TV episodes, making it a leader in the field. We have established content partnerships with industry leaders such as MTV, Comedy Central, Spike TV, Starz, Showtime, NBC, Universal Pictures, Nickelodeon and VH1. All of this is in addition to PS3's Blu-ray movie playback capabilities, streaming video capabilities through PS3's built in Internet browser, and its full suite of game offerings makes PS3 the ultimate entertainment machine for the home.

Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall now free

When The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was released, it was hailed by critics for its sprawling open world and the potentially intimidating freedom of choice it offered players. While Oblivion represented a major breakthrough for developer Bethesda Softworks, the foundation of the title's gameplay was in many ways preserved from earlier titles in the series.
Now players who only discovered the role-playing game franchise with Oblivion--or have yet to try it at all--have an expanded opportunity to explore the series' roots. To celebrate the 15th anniversary of The Elder Scrolls, Bethesda today released an earlier installment in the series, The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, free of charge on its Elder Scrolls Web site.
Because the game is being released free of charge, Bethesda will not be providing technical support for it. However, the game can be made to run on modern computers using the DOSBox program, and Bethesda has released a step-by-step guide on how to get it running.
The original Elder Scrolls game, Arena, was similarly released for free to mark the franchise's 10th anniversary. It remains available for download from Bethesda's Elder Scrolls Web site.

Age of Conan woos former players

At launch in May 2008, Funcom shipped more than 1 million copies of its M-rated massively multiplayer online game, Age of Conan. Despite that effort, its subscriber base stood at 415,000 only three months later. However, Funcom has reported that the game's user base has since stabilized, with servers being consolidated in January and a wide-ranging update going live on June 24. Now, the company hopes to bolster the game's ranks with a new promotion aimed at bringing back players who left since its May 2008 release.
Recently, Funcom announced a new "re-evaluation campaign" for the title, allowing former subscribers to play free for two weeks with "no strings attached." Those eligible can reactivate their accounts from now until July 22. However, the new promotion will suspend the previous free-trial offer that was extended to the general public, in order "to ensure the best play environment for all returning players." Currently, the game costs $20 with a monthly fee of $15.
Returning players may notice some new changes in Age of Conan's mature-themed world of Hyboria, which is based on the fantasy fiction of author Robert E. Howard. The game's recent update, Gangs of Tarantia, adds a new location and implements fundamental changes to several of the core systems. For more on Age of Conan, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

UFC 2009 due for patch-up work

Every great fighter needs a great cornerman with a knack for patching up all manner of abuse. THQ has to fill that role for the more than 1 million UFC 2009: Undisputed players in the US to date, and it will do so soon, starting with an update to address some early issues affecting the game.
UFC producer Neven Dravinski this week detailed the first patch for Undisputed on the game's official Web site. First and foremost on Dravinski's list of issues to fix is the abundance of quitters who drop out of matches rather than take a loss. The developer's solution to the problem will be to integrate code that determines who dropped the match and assign a loss and a "Did Not Finish" to the player. Additionally, dropping will reset a player's winning streak to zero, and the player's DNF percentage will be visible to potential opponents on the online ranked match mode's selection screen.
The patch will also address a number of other issues. In the single-player mode, the difficulty of making an opponent submit has been changed to better balance the effectiveness of strikes and submissions when playing against the computer. The development team is also toning down the frequency of flash knockouts (match ending strikes in the first seconds of a bout), fixing a bug in the PlayStation 3 edition of the game that causes freezes during auto-saving, and tweaking the Create-a-Fighter mode so that brawlers with tampered statistics won't be able to compete online.
"Rest assured our entire team plays A LOT [emphasis in original] of online matches and we read the boards every day, so we are well aware of the issues," Dravinski wrote. "We want to make sure we patch this correctly so it is taking a bit of time, but I can confidently say we'll be releasing this patch soon."
UFC 2009: Undisputed is available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Avatar awards, marketplace glimpsed in leaked screens?
- Posted Jul 9, 2009 3:13 pm PT
At the Electronic Entertainment Expo last month, Microsoft revealed that Xbox 360 Avatars would soon be getting their very own marketplace in August. The marketplace will offer up a variety of items, including game-themed shirts for MSP80 ($1) and interactive props for MSP320 ($4). Halo 3, Fable II, Gears of War 2, and Splinter Cell Avatar add-ons are reportedly already planned.
At a bloggers lunch and later meetings, Xbox Live reps also confirmed that along with the Avatar Marketplace, "Avatar Awards" will be doled out alongside achievements for feats of in-game prowess. Whether achievements and awards would be tied together has not yet been confirmed.
However, if several screens leaked on (and since pulled from) GameCinemaHD are authentic, both the awards and marketplace will be front and center (literally) in the 360 Avatar submenu. The screens, which Microsoft had not authenticated as of press time, show both awards and marketplace tabs in the existing avatar menu. Another screen shows an empty avatar awards gallery with a simple placard saying "unlock avatar awards by playing games."

Third Mortal Kombat movie filming in September - Report
- Posted Jul 8, 2009 5:48 pm PT
Last month, a bankruptcy court lawsuit provided Mortal Kombat movie fans with a glimmer of hope that the fighting franchise could hit theaters for the third time. The complaint, brought by original Mortal Kombat film producer Larry Kasanoff, mentioned that a third feature was in the works, with a script, talent, and shooting locations all lined up.
That film may be closer than the next installment in the gory gaming series, judging by a San Gabriel Valley Tribune feature on the martial artist and actor underneath the scorpion mask. Eighth-degree black belt Chris Casamassa told the paper that he will be reprising his role for a third Mortal Kombat movie, with filming set to begin in September.
The original Mortal Kombat film was made with a $25 million budget in 1995, and went on to garner $122 million in box office receipts worldwide. The success of the movie prompted Kasanoff's production company to create a number of follow-up projects in quick succession. There was a feature-film sequel, 1997's Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, the Saturday-morning cartoon Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm, the TV series Mortal Kombat: Conquest, and even a touring stage show.

Peggle World of Warcraft Edition hits Azeroth

In World of Warcraft, it's often difficult to avoid long periods of inactivity, like when waiting in queue for an arena tournament or during downtime in a dungeon raid. To get some fun out of these otherwise boring intervals, third-party mod developers have long offered in-game puzzle side games so players can stave off the monotony. Dev-publisher PopCap soon joined the fray, incorporating multiplatinum Bejewelled in September 2008 and Peggle in April 2009 for free.
PopCap announced today another title to its WOW collection with the all-new Peggle World of Warcraft Edition, now available for free download. Cocreated with Blizzard Entertainment, the new stand-alone game boasts 10 franchise-themed levels with backgrounds sketched by Blizzard artists. Players can follow Peggle protagonists Bjorn the Unicorn and Splork as they confront Azeroth's most infamous inhabitants. Many of the edition's challenges and scenes have WOW-themed names, such as "Pwnxia," "Phat Lewtz," and "The Traitor King."
According to PopCap, Peggle has been downloaded more than 50 million times ever since it was released in March 2007. Currently, the series is available on the PC, Nintendo DS, Xbox Live Arcade, several iPod iterations, iPhone, and 650 cell phone models.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Collector's Edition unveiled

Like its forebearer, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 isn't a simple PlayStation 3 port of the last Xbox 360 installment in Tecmo's shinobi action series. Besides all the content of Ninja Gaiden 2, the game will sport femme fatales imported from Tecmo's Dead or Alive and an upgraded graphics engine.
Now, though, GameStop is giving further incentive to pick up the title by exclusively offering a $70 Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Collector's Edition version. According to the retailer's product page, the special version will include an 80-page book with three parts: a strategy guide, a section with "vibrant Ninja Gaiden art," and a comic book that corresponds to in-game cutscenes and the storyline.
All editions of Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 feature a new online co-op mode with more than 30 challenge stages. The M for Mature game launches in North America on September 29 and is explained in detail in GameSpot's video interview below.

Fight Night Round 4 DLC enters ring in August

The first Fight Night to be developed by EA Canada debuted to solid reviews on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 last month. Today, EA Sports announced that the boxing sim's first round of downloadable content is expected to arrive on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network by early August.
Assured to be a crowd pleaser by dent of its free price point, the first add-on for both platforms introduces a new training gym, as well as unspecified new gameplay sliders and equipment. EA Sports notes that Xbox 360 gamers will also exclusively receive a Sugar Ray Leonard variant as part of the DLC.
Beyond the bonus content, EA Sports also said that it would be introducing a new control scheme to the game by early September. The scheme lets players use the face buttons on the Xbox 360's or PlayStation 3's respective controller to throw jabs, hooks, uppercuts, and haymakers.

Halo 3: ODST maps revealed

With Halo 3: ODST set for a September 22 release on the Xbox 360, Microsoft continues to keep the game's marketing campaign on a slow burn, dribbling out new information on a semi-regular basis. Today, the game's developer, Bungie Software, unveiled the three new multiplayer maps that will be included with the game as part of its self-proclaimed Bungie Day celebrations.
The first map, Heretic, doesn't entirely fit into the "all-new" category, as it is a re-envisioned take on Halo 2's Midship arena and features a symmetrical play field on the Covenant vessel Pious Inquisitor. Citadel is a small, symmetrical map that plays out in an abandoned Forerunner stronghold. Lastly, Longshore is designed for large squads, taking place within the Old Mombasa commercial port.
Halo 3: ODST will be available for the Xbox 360 as a $59.99 standard edition or as a $99.99 Collector's Pack, which comes with a UNSC-green special edition Halo wireless controller. In addition to the single-player campaign, ODST players gain access to three new multiplayer maps, the Firefight co-op mode, all previously released Halo 3 multiplayer add-on maps, and guaranteed access to the Halo: Reach multiplayer beta.

Microsoft unveils rewards for 1 vs. 100 Live

Although the primetime NBC trivia show 1 vs. 100 went off the air in February 2008, the series lives on as an interactive online game adaptation offered in beta form through Xbox Live. But where the television show tantalized contestants with a $1 million reward, the Xbox 360 game show currently offers no tangible prizes--though that will soon change, according to Microsoft.
Starting this Friday, the show's online contestants will be eligible for prizes such as Xbox Live Arcade titles and HDTVs if their trivia knowledge is up to snuff. The lead contestant ("the One"), can win up to 10,000 Microsoft points ($125) by outlasting all 100 opponents ("the Mob"). Members of the Mob will be able to win Xbox Live Arcade games of Microsoft's choosing, as well as up to 800 Microsoft points ($10). Those watching the show unfold and playing along as part of "The Crowd" are also eligible to earn a free Live Arcade game if they finish in the top three scores. All participants will be entered into a sweepstakes drawing for a Zune or an HDTV home theater system.
Contestants for The One and The Mob will be picked based on their previous performance in the game, with only Xbox Live Gold members allowed to participate. Moreover, contestants from Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, Maryland, and Quebec will not be eligible to win prizes. For those who are eligible, the prize packages will last through 1 vs. 100 Live "Season 1," which ends August 29.

Wii graffiti app wins design prize

At last month's Electronic Entertainment Expo, Microsoft showed off a painting program for its forthcoming motion-sensing add-on, Project Natal. Now, two German graduate students have won a prestigious award for a more streetwise painting application for an existing motion-sensing platform--the Nintendo Wii.
On July 4, German design firm International Forum Design awarded its annual prizes to promising artists in the European country. One of the winners of the iF Communication Design Award was WiiSpray, an art application which turns the Wii remote into a virtual spray can. The software remains in the experimental stage, and has not been approved to be part of any retail product by Nintendo.
Conceived in 2007 by Bauhaus University students Martin Lihs and Frank Matuse after the former collaborated with a Portugeuse graffiti artist, Wii Spray is based on an Adobe Flash-based application called WiiFlash and standard Wii technology. The latest version actually lets users snap the Wii remote into an artificial spray can which can apparently recognize actual different types of nozzles and caps. The app also allows users to combine up to 128 colors via radial on-screen palette, and has none of the chemical mess and legal complications of real grafitti--although it does require a video projector or very large television to be practical.

Thursday's Bulls*** takes on game-violence link

Last month, the magic comedy duo of Penn Jilette and Raymond Teller, aka Penn & Teller, revealed that they would address the link between violence and video games in the next season of their Showtime series, Bulls***. But while the program was revealed via several brief shots of the Electronic Entertainment Expo and a statement from anti-game activist Jack Thompson, it was unclear when it would actually air or what, specifically, it would cover.
Now, the official Bulls*** site has revealed that the episode, titled simply "Video Games," will begin airing this Thursday, July 9, at 10:00 p.m. EDT/PDT. The program's synopsis reads as follows:
Politicians and other alarmists claim that playing video games leads to teen violence. Penn & Teller attempt to debunk that theory by handing over a real semi-automatic weapon to a nine-year-old to see if playing video games will turn him into a human killing machine.
Showtime, which is owned by GameSpot parent CBS Corp., is also offering a preview of the episode on the Bulls*** site. (Clip contains coarse language--viewer discretion is advised.) The clip shows game-violence opponent Chris Cooney explaining how he believes the intersection of guns, troubled teens, and "mass-killing simulators"--aka first-person shooters--are the key ingredients in any school shooting spree.
"All you are is looking down the barrel of a gun going 'kill, kill, kill, kill,'" says Cooney. "It's a shame you couldn't just be running around finding sick people and hitting them with a magic wand that will make them healthy, or something like that."

Bit.Trip Core, Bust-A-Move Plus! top Nintendo DLC

Nintendo is going retro for this week's updates to its online store, with '80s-inspired Bit.Trip Core hitting the shelves today along with a Virtual Console revival of the Commodore 64's beach-themed California Games.
The sequel to Gaijin Games' WiiWare offering Bit.Trip Beat, the rhythm-based Bit.Trip Core puts players in control of a stationary cross-shaped cannon at the center of the screen as they shoot down "bits" that cross the playfield. Players are punished for missing too many bits by flashing laser-light-show visuals and muting the soundtrack. The game can be played by up to two players and costs 600 Wii points.*
Also out is Taito's puzzle game Bust-a-Move Plus! (WP600), which has one to two players traverse 135 levels in six different planetary environments. Rounding out this week's WiiWare updates is Heracles: Chariot Racing (WP800), which lets players control the ancient Greek hero as he races his horse-drawn transport down ancient roadways. Up to four players can gallop through 10 mythic landscapes and throw tridents, fireballs, and lightning bolts at their opponents.
The Wii's Virtual Console will see a revival of the Commodore 64 game California Games. This summertime sports game includes a hodgepodge of beach-themed sports in the Golden State, like skateboarding, surfing, roller skating, Frisbee, and BMX. California Games supports one to four players and costs 500 Wii points.
On the Nintendo DS, players can download a new racing game, Asphalt 4: Elite Racing, for 800 DSi points. Racers can choose among 28 sports cars and motorcycles in eight 3D urban raceways. Also out this week is Art Style: BASE 10 (500 DSi points), a numbers game where players make combinations of 10 by sliding numbers around the playfield.
