What we heard: With MTV Games' Rock Band upping the ante in the rhythm game scene last year by introducing drums and vocal tracks, Activision Blizzard and peripheral makers RedOctane had no real choice but to respond in kind with Guitar Hero: World Tour. In addition to an overhauled plastic guitar that features a touch-sensitive neck, the publisher has announced a pair of new peripherals: a five-pad drum kit with kick pedal and pressure sensitive pads and a microphone for karaoke tracks.

It now appears as if RedOctane has one more peripheral yet to reveal. Speaking with G4, Neversoft project director Brian Bright reportedly told the enthusiast network that yet one more peripheral will be announced for Guitar Hero: World Tour. While Bright did not elaborate on what, exactly, the peripheral is, he did note that it will be used exclusively in the game's Studio mode, where aspiring musicians can lay down their own tracks. Neversoft has been charged with developing the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions of World Tour.

So what could this new peripheral be? The obvious guesses, and guesses they most certainly are, would be for a keyboard or turntable peripheral, both of which would be particularly compelling considering Activision's applications to trademark DJ Hero and Keyboard Hero. However, with only a few months between now and the launch of the game, it seems unlikely that Activision Blizzard would wait so long to make a push for some new dedicated device.

Further, a device of that scale packed in with the game would undoubtedly rocket the price of the package. Many retailers, who are often tipped off by publishers so that they can accurate allocate shelf space and promotion, are currently listing the most expensive World Tour bundle for $189.99, which falls squarely in line with the game/guitar/mic/drum kit model established by Rock Band a year ago. Were it a packed-in item, the peripheral would likely be chintzy by design and not worth the attention.

A more plausible possibility, then, is that the peripheral Bright was referencing could be a device that is fully functional outside of the game. During E3 2008, Bright revealed that the new drum kit would include an input that would allow its control to be mapped to any instrument with a MIDI digital output. "I was just doing it last night with a MIDI-10 drum machine," Bright teased at the time.

The official story: RedOctane had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus that we've heard the last of new peripherals in Guitar Hero: World Tour. A Guitar Hero-branded MIDI-compatible device is looking most probable, though far from confirmed.

Probably a cheap 4-track or 8-track mixer for mini productions.

Wow I would probably buy World Tour if it got a turntable. Hopefully it is one!

considering this is my first time actually reading this article right now, knowing full well it isn't going to be a keyboard, I'll take a wack at it and say turntable? He said it would only be useful in studio mode, so what else could it be? Although a turntable might only be useful in a handful of songs (Linkin Park incl. obviously), that seems the most plausible for something that's only studio-worthy.

A guitar, drums and vocals is enough for me but a keyboard would be cool too. If they add keyboard they should add the song "Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who.

It would most likely just be a wah-wah peddle for the music creator aspect of the game.

If you check the original G4 news article they've revised it saying it was a mistake on their part and there is NO NEW PERIPHERAL. :-( I guess we'll have to wait until Rock Band 3 to get our Keytar on!

I'l put my bet on a MIDI device, so that you can translate your .mid tracks onto the game and play them with your peers. Sounds kinda cool.

The peripheral arms race ends as soon as either Rock Band or Guitar Hero's Mic has a filter that makes you sound like a robot...

I think it would be cool if they made a new instrument like keyboard to play in with the band in these games
or the option of having 2 guitarists not just 1

    Posted Aug 25, 2008 8:17 pm PT

Oh, and my guess is that they're not releasing what it is yet, so that rockband can't simply make "their own version" of it. They're already working on something similar to GH's music studio...

I'm sure folks will have fun in the studio mode, making some goofy tunes together in the same room. Some talented musically-inclined humans will obviously want a little more control over the process, even if they're just "messing around in a video game." This is where the extra peripheral comes in for the studio mode. My guess: a very simple little 49 key midi keyboard with a few faders and assignables.

  • Amir29

    Posted Aug 25, 2008 12:58 pm PT

Oh yeah... I wanted to take a few guesses at the peripheral. I WOULD like to see a pedal for the guitar. Maybe for wah effects or switching from clean to distortion. But, I'm serious when I say this, If they had a burst sticker on the box that said, "Now with more cowbell." I think we would all jump to get it simply because that would be HILARIOUS!!!

    LOL!!!

Platinumdeals: I'm sorry, but I don't agree at all. As a musician and writer I love playing these games and look forward to creating songs as well. Video games were created for everyone to have fun. If they want to give us more to do then I'm all for it. Of course they may not pull off the feature well and it may suck in the end, but it's good when developers try something new. If they didn't, we would be stuck playing the same slightly upgraded games for years. My band's name is "The Entrusted" You can find us on MySpace if you're thinking we don't know what we're doing.

LOL!!! Wait... That totally sounds like I'm advertising my band. I'm not guys, just proving a point.

Also, has nobody thought that although RB DLC carries over from game to game, you can make the more solo heavy songs from GH 1, 2 and 3 as well as RB 1 & 2 on your own (thinking La Grange, Impulse, TTFAF, Jordan, Jessica etc)

I hope it is some sort of attachment to the controller for studio mode, from what i've seen it could be a nightmare making a song with a guitar.

ok,domino1812,if no one wants to buy the game, then don't you think Activision and RedOctane would've alerady stopped making World Tour and the peripherals for it?
Also, the set list is NOT garbage. All the songs in this game are going to be original master recordings. You call Jimi Hendrix,Van Halen,Metallica and Linkin Park garbage?YOu obviously have bad taste in music.

I feel like there's an area here that is pointlessly being dabbled in. This studio mode is just too far, I feel like anyone who would understand how to create a song that's worth listening to or to even make it sound "okay" probably has the ability to go to a real studio and record a song that is better. I don't think music illiterate people will use this, and I don't think musicians will. I feel like the people who buy GH want to play guitar, and the people who buy RB want to play drums or play with friends.

Guitar Hero World Tour is going to be the choice for Wii owners. It has downloadable content for Wii, unlike Rock Band, which just gives us a track pack and expects everything to be okay.

domino1812 guitar hero is not ripping off rock band at all. It would be stupid for a developer to make a game based on guitar when there competitor has drums, vocals, guitar, and bass. Also the developers of guitar hero made a game that had drums, guitar and singing a long time ago.

If they were ripping of Rock Band, they wouldn't have features that are head-and-shoulders above Rock Band, like the studio. Rock Band's next iteration (if it has one) will be ripping of World Tour, mark my words.
