Source: An eagle-eyed GameSpot News reader. (Keep the tips coming, kids!)

The official story: It's no secret that this weekend, Blizzard Entertainment will reveal a new game. Last month, the developer-publisher took a break from counting its massive World of Warcraft revenue to reveal it would be making a major announcement at the forthcoming Blizzard World Wide Invitational (WWI) event in Seoul, South Korea.

Given the massive popularity of Starcraft in Korea, the announcement's venue led many to believe that the unnamed game would be a sequel to the real-time strategy title. Others felt that, given the fact that Blizzard is hiring developers for a next-generation massively multiplayer online project, the new game might actually be an MMOG based on Starcraft, along the lines of a major game site's 2006 prank announcement of World of Starcraft. (Ahem.)

On Monday, the Irvine, California-based developer-publisher began a teaser countdown on its Web site, Blizzard.com, showcasing its biggest games from the past 13 years. A timeline on the bottom of the site begins with the company's 1994 debut Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, and ends with a gigantic question mark, which sources close to Blizzard told GameSpot would be a "massive surprise."

However, said surprise's impact looks set to be diminished somewhat. That's because a countdown identical to the one running on Blizzard.com is also running on Starcraft2.com. The page also bears the imprimatur of Blizzard Entertainment, and is registered to the company, according to a Network Solutions WHOIS search. Though Blizzard has owned Starcraft2.com since 2003, the fact the site is now actively promoting a game--and not merely redirecting to Blizzard.com--is indicative of something in the offing.

What we heard: Blizzard had not returned requests for comment as of press time, which is not entirely surprising, given that much of its PR department is currently badgering flight attendants for cocktails in transit to Korea. However, a search of other potential game titles doesn't turn up any more sites officially registered to Blizzard. Diablo3.com and Worldofstarcraft.com are fan pages, and Starcraftmmo.com and Warcraft4.com are both owned by cybersquatters.

Bogus or not bogus?: Blizzard has been characteristically tight-lipped about its forthcoming announcement, expected Saturday. However, it is looking more and more likely that it will be Starcraft-related.

I was a pretty big fan of StarCraft so I hope its StarCraft sequel they are talking about. Diablo was wicked awesome aswell but I believe Diablo 2 is where it ends cause World Of WarCraft is basically a large scale version of Diablo only its based on the WarCraft universe. I honestly hope its not going to be World Of StarCraft because first of all StarCraft was one of the most amazing Strategy (RTS) games ever, thats just what it is, its a strategy game I don't really know how to elaborate on that, but I think you know what i'm trying to say. Second I don't see how different they can make it when comparing it to World Of WarCraft anyway. World Of WarCraft has got everything you could possibly imagine in an MMO game. the only difference would probably be a whole library of new Textures and updated graphics which would be cool... for a while, but knowing Blizzard it just doesn't seem like the best idea for them. unless they decide to do something drasticaly different and unique, I think its best they stick with the RTS style of gameplay we all know and hopefully add something super cool to it, which I know would probably be pretty hard considering how far we have come and running low on new inovative ideas. I have faith in Blizzard with whatever decision they make, but dang it must be hard work, know wonder it takes them so long to perfect a game. Hey wait a minute I just thought of something. If it is indeed World Of StarCraft, ("I hope blizzard reads this" ) a really cool addition to this new MMOG would be the fact that in the StarCraft universe you can travel into space. Now that alone opens doors to new grounds doesn't it. Owning a space ship, traveling to other planets, space stations, space battles and possibly owning your own Citadel, all this including what we saw in World Of WarCraft. This could be big, this could be very big, and I could be dreaming, but they do say dreams can come true haha.
In this case I think I change my mind I'd like to see a Star Wars MMOG done right. FANTASTIC YA.

It's gonna start tomorrow. The Blizzard World Wide Invitational. Oh, and a little conspiracy trivia for all you Blizzard fans. Starcraft, heavily plagiarizes Warhammer 40,000. Warcraft, somewhat copies (The Orcs most obviously)Warhammer. I'm not trying to offend, I like Blizzard games, but I thought I should inform those who didn't know. Anyways, let's hope for the best.

Star Craft the original was a great game, played it for years and still play it from time to time... only thing i dont want to see is them make another crap MMO like WOW out of SC. if they do it will be yet another disappointment. trying to make a game from RTS to MMORPG is just stupid and yes its working but only cuz there are a lot of people out there dazzled by graphics and something simple to play... i stand by games such as Everquest and Final Fantasy XI along with EVE-Online. games which are sucky like WOW... in my humble opinion its not a game worthy of the title mmorpg. casual gamers play it and some hardcore ones just not up to the challenge of better MMORPGS. having said that i know not everyone has time to look for groups in EQ, ffXI but if you want to be hardcore you gotta play the hardcore games with challenge. not a piece of crap like WOW... I KNOW not everyone will agree with me but thats ok, thats what opinions are. not everyone agrees. i want to leave you all with something to think about it...

Marketing, it it wasnt for it im willing to bet not nearly as many people would be playing it. as well as Xbox 360 which claims to be better then ps3 which it is not. its all about marketing my friends. if it wasnt for marketing and a few other things we wouldnt all be using windows right now. probably be using linux or even mac osx. dont be a slave to marketing and brainwashing people think for yourselves. open your eyes and your mouth ask questions and let your likes dictate what you buy. thank you

    your humble friend UltimateCloud

Uh, look a little closer. Starcraft2.com just redirects to Blizzard.com, same as it always has. Blizzard.com has the splash page. As does every game site owned by Blizzard. If Starcraft2.com hadn't existed before now, THEN it would be an indicator. The fact that its been around for a few years simply means they're covering all their bases by having it redirect to the splash screen like everything else. Thoroughness is not an indicator of future development :b Could it be Starcraft 2? Sure. Is this proof? Not in the slightest.

Yeah, I don't buy the "big surprise" thing. The only thing that would be a "big surprise" is if they were announcing a brand new property. (not Diablo, not WarCraft, not StarCraft) The industry is too sequel-oriented for that to happen IMO, especially with so many people clammering for Blizzard sequels. Still, StarCraft 2 would be the best news, IMO. If they were making an MMO net to catch the people who are getting tired of WoW, (some kind of World of StarCraft, or World of Diablo, or something) that would be the worst news, but it might turn the biggest profit for Blizzard. *crosses fingers* They are in Korea, which would be the perfect place to announce SC2.

I really do not like surprizes, becouse every time I waited for something great I was disappointed. I personally waiting for a Diablo 3 or a Starcraft 2 . In this topic someone mentioned that it will be a shooter....well this idea hit my mind too but I hope they will not release another boring Xtreeme grafics "need to upgrade my PC for $2000" shooter. Of course I liked Blizzard all the time becouse they made their games ru on slower PC`s and they are still very very good.
Another thing that it`s not enough to be starcraft related...if will not be an RTS it will ruin millions of people worldwide and evryone who played Starcraft will remain to play their good old "precious"
amlmost 99% chance is for an RTS or a completely ne genre, becouse if you admire blizzards product list you can figure somethin out:
    Warcraft 2 (RTS)
    Diablo (RPG)
    Starcraft (RTS)
    Diablo 2 (RPG)
    Warcraft 3 (RTS)
    WOW (RPG)
    ....
    Starcraft 2 (RTS)
So they are specialized to 2 genres RPG and RTS, if they keep this list alive it will e an RTS and the only candidate here is Starcraft becouse it`s the only game without a sequel, the chance for another warcraft related game would be a bit "unintelligent" I get bored from so much warcraft
The last candidate is a Diablo RTS that really would be a big surprize but I hope this won`t be happen.
And one last this maybe they gonna get bored to make only RTS and RPG maybe they come out with somethin really new....like a card game )

And if you go to Starcraft2.com you will see a light up question mark at the bottom right corner after all the other game titles. Man, if the do make a Starcraft MMO I will be all for it...and I guess I would finally have to start playing MMOs.

I think it's StarCraft: GHOST. They probably stopped production on GHOST because they knew that the PS3, Nintendo Wii and XBox 360 were going to get out, so the timing wasn't right. So now that all 3 platforms are out and all 3 seem to be doing pretty well, I think it only makes sense for them to revive the project.

Releasing a StarCraft MMO or StarCraft 2 is only suicide, IMHO... They're already doing so well with WoW; the last thing they'd want to do is release another online-playable game, especially if it offers free online gameplay (i.e. StarCraft 2). Now why would they want to release another title that will compete with their own product? And GHOST will be targeted at console gamers, so profit is maxed out. Afterall, starcraft2.com is just a redirect to blizzard.com, and the look and feel of the announcement seems StarCraft-ish.
