Source: A variety of reports linking back to the console partisans at Xbox Evolved.

What we heard: Even skeptics of Halo 2's sales potential on the PC--which is limited to Vista-enabled machines--can't contest the fact that the game is a monster hit on the Xbox. As of March 31, it has sold nearly 5.7 million copies in the US alone, according to the NPD Group. The industry research firm pegs combined retail sales of Halo 2, the Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack, the Halo Triple Pack, and both versions of the original Halo: Combat Evolved at a grand total of 11.6 million. And, again, those are just the US retail figures: On its first day on the market in 2004, the game shipped 2.38 million copies worldwide, generating over $125 million in 24 hours.

Needless to say, the level of interest in Halo 3 is somewhere in the stratosphere. Between 60,000 and 80,000 inquiries about the game are made on GameSpot each day, and the mere mention of its title sends story comments into the hundreds. So when reports began to surface today that at least 4 million people have preordered Halo 3, they seemed perfectly reasonable.

However, at second glance, the news of Halo 3's preorder milestone seems much shakier. They stem from a single report on Xbox Evolved citing "information at five different Greater Cincinnati Gamestop locations." The console fan site claims the 4 million figure was "verified at all locations" even though "a document showing this information was not revealed." Also, the report claims that 4 million people preordered the game via GameStop alone. That figure seems awfully high, given that GameStop accounts for only around one quarter of US game sales, and there were only 10.4 million Xbox 360s worldwide as of January.

The official story: Calls to six different San Francisco GameStop and EB locations produced an almost uniform answer. "We don't have access to that kind of information," one manager said incredulously. "And even if we did, we wouldn't give it out without the OK from corporate." For its part, GameStop's corporate office had not responded to inquires from GameSpot as of press time.

Furthermore Microsoft--which presumably would want to tell everything with an opposable thumb about 4 million Halo 3 preorders--refused to even address the report. "No comment," was all a recalcitrant rep would say.

Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus that 4 million Halo 3 GameStop preorders have been officially confirmed in any capacity. Not bogus that at least 4 million gamers worldwide will scoop up the Master Chief's adventure in its first few months on the market.

I hate that claim that Halo is an overrated mediocre shooter...and then people start to name off PC FPS to compare it to. What made it so great was the fact that it was a console FPS before it ever came to PC..and most console shooters don't do everything right that Halo did. Halo had close to perfect and fluid game play that combined great gun play with fun and very well done vehicle play. It must not be too mediocre if it single handily sells and carrys consoles..has a hugggge fan base and every other FPS released seems to try to emulate or outdo what Halo does.

I don't care!!! Halo sucks...most of the people didn't saw that but this is the most basic FPS of it's time...even GoldenEye was wayyy better that this stupid game and it was released about 5 years before the first Halo... This is my opinion... 4 millions of people wasting his money for that game that you will see it at 20$ about 6 months after the release date!!!

Am I the only person who owns a 360 who couldn't give a monkeys butt about Halo 3?

The piss-poor ending to Halo 2 really sucked, and when it comes down to it Halo is just another no-brain FPS, and I can't stand a game where you can finish the whole thing without ever having to think about the best way to approach a situation... now Bioshock, thats a different matter... can't wait to get my mitts on that one.

I actually don't find this hard to believe at all. Think of the recent ebay trend of buying up multiple copies of 'guaranteed' hits and it definitely seems possible that people have pre-ordered multiple copies. Not to mention that if anyone is still doing LAN halo parties/businessess then multiple copies would be bought for that reason as well. Just because there are only 11million 360 consoles (roughly) worldwide doesn't rule out this pre-order possibility.

  • ZabuzaR

    Posted May 13, 2007 1:16 pm PT

I doubt that 4 million copies have been on reserve at this point. However I do believe that the game will reach 4 million easily within the first 2 months of release.

Personally, I'm no tmuch of a halo fan. The game is ok, and Halo 2 was kinda fun...so long as I was playing with friends. Total strangers on that game are viscious and vindictive. They were so overly competitve that it took the fun out of the game (for me, that is). I have found similar situations in Gears, but mostly in Ranked matches. Hopefully Halo 3 will feature something like Gears: Player matches vs. Ranked matches, so that the idiot /jerk crowd currently STILL playing Halo 2 with all its glitches and cheats will migrate to the ranked section, leaving the player section (and its lack of achievments) a place to just have fun.

admir1983 "played Halo the first one on Xbox and PC and i have played many FPS and this game (halo) is overrated its a medicore game Half Life 2, Far Cry,Fear just to name some are much better games and people you know its true"

I can't say anything as far as Half-Life 2 or FEAR goes since I haven't played them, but FarCry sucked horribly. There's no possible way that it was better than Halo in any aspect. The ONLY mildly interesting part about FarCry was its story, everything else just sucked. The gameplay was horrible, the only reason I even finished the game was because I literally had nothing better to do.

anyway, 4 million preorders at just GameStop seems a little high, I wouldn't be surprised if there were that many total by the time it come out. I have a feeling that the number those stores quoted might have been a goal they were supposed to reach or they just misrepresented the actual numbers.

why anyone would buy something fromsuch a godawful company like eb is beyond me. they rip you off on trade in and flat out lie to you over their policies. you should instead support your locally owned video game stores. these theives do not even keep your money in your hometown after they rip it from you! rather they transfer the funds out of state immediatly the next day. i also love how the loser manager tells them "we can't give out that info without corperates ok" managers of ebs are not really managers but more like babysitters whose job is to try and rein in the employees from making the ripoffs to obvious

    Posted May 12, 2007 10:59 am PT

Being an ex-employee of the company involved, 4 million is DEFINITELY out of the question. However, since Gamestop has been taking preorders for Halo 3 since LAST MAY, i can see where people would get that kind of idea. But based on what i've seen locally, I'd put the number around 500,000. And that's all 3 versions combined, btw. Because there are roughly 4000 stores nationwide and on average most have over 100 preorders, if not more at this time. I wouldn't be surprised if the number didn't get close to 1 million by november, but i wont be surprised if it doesn't either.

Ok, I'm sure there will be plenty of people who disagree with me, but I think the visuals in both Halo's were average at best. Level design wasn't too hot either - lots of repetitive architecture and similar fights. Also don't rate the weapons or gameplay that highly - the shield recharge thing isn't a FPS imo, I'll take the gameplay of, say HL2 or FarCry any day. BUT that's not why I've played both Halo's through - for me it's all storyline - love the world they've created. This being the same reason I'm going to buy Halo 3 and a reason many other people will buy it. I have no doubt that it will sell far in excess of 4 million copies worldwide in a matter of a week or so (probably less). But yeah, at the end of the day, for graphics, gameplay and multiplayer, I'll stick with a mouse, keyboard and the PC.

I know of at least a dozen people who are simply waiting for Halo 3 before purchasing a 360. They simply haven't been overwhelmed by the current catalogue of titles. I got to say that I agree. 360 is still yet to get a killer title. Gears of War is the closest thing it's got to meeting that description.

Better then 1 in 4 owners of all 360's have pre-ordered already, from one retailer? No.
