Source: This month's issue of Game Informer.

The official story: See below.

What we heard: Of all the games at the 2006 Game Developers Conference, few caused as much of a stir as Crysis. Visitors to the ATI booth on the floor were wowed by a trailer of the CryEngine 2, the basis of the forthcoming PC game from Electronic Arts and developer Crytek. Sporting volumetric clouds, real-time ambient maps, soft shadows, and visuals with cinematic depth of field and motion blur, the trailer looked even better than Far Cry, Crytek's debut.

Crysis was first announced as an unnamed "exciting new game franchise for the PC based on original intellectual property" by EA and Crytek in July 2004. The game was given its title in January 2006, and every subsequent press release has mentioned it solely as a PC title.

So it was with some excitement, then, that gamers without the several thousand dollars it takes to get a high-end PC setup heard that Crysis will also be coming to next-generation consoles. The rumors stem from a Game Informer preview of the game that outlines its storyline--one that concerns North Korea fighting the US at the beginning of an alien invasion. Right above the title of the game, next to "PC" are the words "PlayStation 3" and "Xbox 360."

Mention of the next-generation consoles is clear evidence Crysis will not just be for the PC, right? Well, not exactly. When contacted by GameSpot, an EA rep said that "Crysis is currently being developed solely as a PC product." Those words were echoed by Crytek president and CEO Cevat Yerli, who said that his company is only working on the PC version.

But just because CryTek isn’t working on a console version of Crysis doesn't mean that Crysis won't make it to console in one form or another. Far Cry publisher Ubisoft developed its console spin-off, Far Cry Instincts, and its sequel, Far Cry Instincts Evolution, internally--meaning EA could be doing the same. And if Crysis is half as good as Far Cry was, EA will almost certainly bring the IP to as many platforms as possible, in one form or another.

As for the question of quality, neither Far Cry Instincts nor its Xbox 360 port, Far Cry Instincts Predator, compare visually to Crysis. But graphics-intensive games that have been developed simultaneously for next-gen consoles and PC--like Unreal Tournament 2007 (PS3) and Elder Scrolls IV (360)--are playing and looking almost identical. Given than the next-gen version of Crysis would come out after the PC game--and after designers have had more experience with next-gen software-developer kits--it could stack up pretty favorably to the original.

Bogus or not bogus?: Officially bogus, but eventually likely.

It can't run crysis because of Random access memory simple

the console will probably be behind one generation for each Crysis release IF it ever gets ported into next-gen consoles.Crytek will always try to surpass its previous title and they will require more and more power. If they manage to make the consoles catch up it will be because the graphics got dumbed down or the consoles got very powerful very suddenly. It may be best if Crysis titles stayed PC only.

Nah. Consoles are famed for not being able to keep up with PC releases. Crysis on a console? Never.

Shame, such an awesome game being stripped down to fit into a crappy 360. Hopefully they'll at least put it for the more advanced and awesomer PS3. I would know if a 360 is crappy I own one and I own a much more powerful, advanced pc!

With 512MB video RAM and a Microsoft operating system already in place, it may end up as a Xbox 360 exclusive. Its just an outstanding console to translate a PC title to...Windows to Xbox. PS3 would be nice too, but developing it to work with the cell chip is more difficult.

now that the game is out and i have it i can say that it would be like comparing Oblivion on 360 to Oblivion on pc. i have a 360 and a sick system: E6850 2 gigs ram SLI 8800 gtxs and all settings maxed with 65fps average. i don't think that it will hit consoles at least not this verson and not even close to these graphics.

I think the 360 should be able to handle Crysis, though they might have to tune down the graphics a teensy little bit. It'le still look great though. the gameplay should be just as good. I hope it comes to consoles- halo fans need more stuff to help survive the wait 'till halo 3.

I reckon 360 could run it. I own a 360, pc and PS2 and I loathe playstation. Dont ask me why but its sort of like marmite to me, some love it some hate it, well i hate playstation and i love microsoft. I have doubt on weather my pc could run this game and I think it would be a SERIOUSLY bad move for EA and them lot making Crysis to only release a pc version cause the sales wont be NEARLY as high as they would probably like them because nobody will be able to play it.
The 360 to me only has one downfall at this time compared to pcs and consoles and thats its RAM even my PC has more RAM and that will be its major downfall when it comes to playing huge games like this apart from that a 20Gb HDD, 3 3.2Ghz CPUs along with the 500MB ATi GPU should do fine I reckon.

ok, to the guy that thinks the mgs4 trailer is prerendered, you have to think about mgs's track record, all of the mgs2 trailers were sed to be prerendered, but when it came out it was just the same, identicl in fact, but other games like ghost recon always have a prerendered trailer, graw's trailer WAS prerendered, cause the resolution fot the techtures were masive, im talkin 2000x2000 ish, plus the charicter movrmend didnt have that mo-cap feel, so no mgs4s trailer wasnt fake,

and your a idiot blackicejoe EA wont be able to bring it to PS3, lucky if 360(which has a somewhat chance) but the graphics, phisics and power that CryTek is pushing unto Crysis is alot, and possibly to much. But also by the time its released there will be new processors and stuff that will be able to run it smoothly. and PC's ALLTHE WAY!!!!!!!!

I so hope this comes out on the PS3 and 360 that would be great.

I also think it has a good chance to come to the 360 and PS3 too because it is EA and they like to bring all the games to all the systems.

You're all nuts... and apparently horribly uninformed. The graphics component found within the X360 is a DX10 only part. It has a unified design, which is not necessarily a requirement of DX10, but rather the proper way to implement DX10 on a card (nvidia won't be doing so until G90 - so wait about 2 years for that one). The X360 GPU, will not run DX9. I say again, it will not run Direct X 9. Windows vista will be running two sets of Direct X APIs. One for DX9 hardware, and one for DX10 hardware. Only Vista will get these DX10 APIs. Since this unified architecture requires DX10, those cards will only run on Vista. So far as OpenGL is concerned, I'm sure there will be a version that will utilize unified shader technology, but it doesn't matter in this case because the X360 APIs are all Direct X 10 derivatives (remember its not x86, it has a proprietary Power CPU, hence the proprietary APIs).

Next onto the PS3. The GPU found within this thing is essentially a specially made G70 deriative. This means that the core itself is capable of running Direct X 9 code or OpenGL 2.0 code. Sony, not a lover of all things Microsoft (ie Direct X) opted for a special version of OpenGL. The OpenGL version they're implementing uses APIs designed to take advantage of the PS3 architecture (cell core & G70+).

Ok. What does this mean for bringing this game to a console? CryTek, or somebody, would have to rewrite this game into the OpenGL version the PS3 requires for this to run on Sony's new box. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. This is a lot of coding, and this likely will not happen. The X360 on the other hand would have a much easier time porting this game over because it's already a DX10 piece of hardware, with DX10 APIs (though slightly modified for the CPU in the X360). The X360 port therefore is a likely outcome, sorry Sony.

this game will run on DX9 also, so if its released on next gen consoles, expect a different version done.

Anyone who's basing the PS3's power off of the MGS4 trailer is an idiot. Can't you tell that it was pre-rendered? That's what TRAILER means. Even if it wasn't pre-rendered, I got better visuals from SC Chaos Theory on the original Xbox than I saw in the MGS4 trailer. Although, looking at the PS2's visuals, making the PS3 as good as the original Xbox is a huge leap foward. If a next gen system can play Crysis, it will be the Xbox 360.

Another thing i have been currious about is the rendering aspect of the consoles. the X360 has 512 mb of onbourd memory where as the PS3 has only 256.

so is there a component on the PS3 That is supposed to get the IQ to look better at only half the memory not to mention the memory is also shared memory with the sound processor.

I know that during E3 last year there was a few rendering demos being run by cell alone. But was that using the 256 MB or was it streamed rendering.

As for the high resolution that the PS3 uses. That might be to compensate for the Fact that it has only 256 MB of memroy. so the memory might actually be handicaping and that it needs the resolution the compensate for that Handicap.

"also, the PS3 is DX9 only. The G7x core is DX9 only, and it won't do HDR and AA like the Xbox 360 does, but it runs at a natively higher resolution, so we might not need AA, I know I dont at 16x12 in CS:S"

AA is basic for all the major graphic cards.. and HDR's actually implemented in SM 3.0 (nVidia 6x00 series and ATI X1x00 series, as matter of fact nvidia support HDR a full generation ahead), something not even DX releated. Anyways.. I hope it won't be like oblivion where you have to go full out everyting to enjoy the game :/ although I will be building a sweet systm for release of Vista just in time for this game.

williamstmx is so right!!! consoles arent proper hardcore gaming machines end of. the 360 is just a kids toy or sumit for the lads to play on when they stagger back from the bar !!!!!! if u dont beleive me then play a full game of HL2 on a good pc with keyboard and mouse - then try a shooter on the 360 controller - poooo!!

Buy a decent PC guys, forget the HD TV, by the time SKY goes fully HD the TVs will be half price!

    PC Gaming forever!
I can only see a future in games like this, being most successful on the top notch PC's. I mean, you can really only experience a great, immersive, FPS game, if it can be run smooth, have great surround sound, and use a keyboard and mouse. You should try a keyboard and mouse for gaming. For years, I have thought it as the master of all controllers. And I have mastered the keyboard. And it's easier to sit close to a PC monitor than a tv using a long controller.
And dont you just hate when you have a game for a console, that is such a poer hog, that you get lag. I would then suggest you get a new PC.
But thats only if your really into First Person Games. Otherwise, stick with your consoles. I think the PC is a FPS fans favorite gaming machine.

actually, you are wrong, in two ways, but its ok
    1. The Xbox360 GPU core has some DX10 extensions in it
    2. Crysis has been confirmed everything we see know is DX9, and the developer said that what we see now is DX9, and the DX10 stuff is supposed to be "a generation beyonf what we see" , I cant wait for that!!!!

X360 or PS3 most likely won't be able to run this thing at max like a PC. Pc's usually surpass the next gen consoles in power about 6 months to a year after they are released....which would put this right in that window. I love the 360 and I hope it's capable of this kind of jaw dropping beauty....but I highly doubt it is......I'm not even sure if it could run FEAR at the max settings.
