Download of the Week - And Yet It Moves
"And Yet It Moves is a puzzle-platformer, set in a unique world, made of ripped paper. Within the paper collage, you can jump, run and last but certainly not least: rotate the world. Learn how to apply the physical consequences of rotation to master the many tricky situations you may encounter."
From the get go the art design in this game is beautifully unique as you're surrounded by ripped paper that forms into caverns, lush forests and more. Within your journey a soft acoustic soundtrack accompanies your every move adding to your excitement while you're suspended in the air or rotating 180 degrees.
The demo starts you off in a set of caverns that act as a tutorial, but quickly turns into a race for your life when tight corners and boulders create danger with every rotation. There are infinite lives through out the demo, but if you die you transport back to your last checkpoint. This can be frustrating at times, but once you master the art of rotation you will soon find the level design amazing.
Each level can be replayed as a time trial, competition, or a simple replay of the level itself. This gives this three level demo a high replay value. You can download this demo here, and many others on the GameSpot Downloads page.

Indie Spotlight - Tag: The Power of Paint
While I was at GDC I saw a bunch of wonderful indie games at the IGF booth. I got to try most of the games that I was looking forward to, but there was this one title that slipped by me due to the huge crowd around it. Tag: The Power of Paint wowed me as I stared at the computer screen along side the group of people. Tag is a FREE, first-person painter puzzle platformer, which focuses on the ability to change your environment with paint. The game was created by a team of students from DigiPen Institute of Technology, and has recently won the Independent Games Festival Best Student Game.

The gameplay is simple yet complex as you're given three colors of paint, green, red and blue, each of which has their own special ability. The green paint gives you the ability to bounce up in the air where ever you place it. The red paint speeds you along your way whenever you need that extra boost to get you by. Finally, the blue paint creates a sticky mixture allowing you to walk on any surface that the blue paint is on.

The level design through out reminded me of a mixture between portal, and mirrors edge taking the best of both worlds and throwing in a bit of paint.
Having beaten the game already, I must say, for an indie game, the amount of levels, puzzles, and unique gameplay make this game worth buying. The best part about Tag is that it's absolutely FREE! Download this game here and many other indie games at the GameSpot Downloads page! -
Download of the Week - SWAT 4 Demo
You ever get that feeling when you just want to reck shop on some thugs with squad based commands and stun grenades, well if your like me then you want to check out the Swat 4 Demo. The demo comes with a Carreer Mode, Quick Mission Mode and Creator. The Career Mode includes one mission where you must save a bunch of mechanics from a hold up. The level design is balanced with enemies and there's plenty of entry points to choose from creating high replay value for this mode.

The Quick Mission Mode and Quick Mission Mode Creator go hand in hand as you must create a mission in order to access the Quick Mission Mode. You're limited to the Career Mode map, but you can alter the level with in many ways. For example, you can add the up to 28 enemies that are scattered around the entire level and adjust the difficulty setting to hard making the scenario much more difficult.

The weapon selection through out the entire demo is meek as you're limited to either an MP5 or a Shotgun as your main weapon, a pistol as your side arm and a couple of stun grenades as your back up. I preferred the shotgun, because it inflicted much more pain, but that's just me. Your movement through the demo could be considered slow, but this is a tactical game, and not a run and gun. Over all this demo has high replay value keeping you entertained for hours. You can download this demo here, and many other on the GameSpot Downloads Page!

Downloaded GDC Special: Snapshot Hands-On
Nominated for the 2009 IGF Excellence in Design Award, creators Peter Jones and Kyle Pulver have attempted to take the platform genre and give it an innovative design. Pulver explains the origins of Snapshot and how it came about.
"My friend, and co-creator Peter Jones , had a dream one night about being chased with a monster and only having a disposable camera on hand to defend him. He took a picture of the monster trapping him inside of the picture. That's where he got the idea for Snapshot ."Right away Snapshot's look reminded me of a mix between Yoshi's Island and Super Mario World, which makes this game quite pleasant to play. The controls are simple and easy to use, and the benefit of an Xbox 360 controller helps the gameplay along. What makes this game unique is the photo taking ability where you snap shots of interactive objects and store them away in your camera for future use. When an obstacle comes your way you just look through your snapshots and use one of them to paste on the screen.
The only usable photos that you can take in the demo are boxes that were used to sit upon buttons or photos of this purple pink elephant that you could jump on to reach higher platforms. If you accidently mistook a photo of a wall you just simply paste the photo anywhere and it will dissolve away. Photo posting was a bit interesting as once you paste a picture on the screen it looks as though you have pasted an actual photo with two pieces of tape on the edge.
Snapshot's level design is in its early stages and the demo I played was made specifically for IGF . The developers have expressed that most of what I was playing would end up on the cutting room floor, but there will be a lot more interactive objects to take snapshots of and more levels to be added once the final build is released. As of now there is no plan to release a demo this year, but stay tuned and GameSpot will update you as soon as possible. As always download, download, and download.

Downloaded GDC Special: Machinarium Hands-On
From 2008 to 2009 The Independent Games Festival has proven to spotlight the best of the best in the independent games world. Today I got the chance to get check out Machinarium, a point and click adventure where you play as a small outcast robot who must defend a city that hates him. Machinarium comes from the great team at Amanita Design, the creators of the point and click series Samorost 1 & 2.

Right from the start, the interactive world of Machinarium had me clicking everywhere from clock towers to sewer pits. The art design has beautiful depth of field with an avant-garde look, as the color pallet through out the game stays within the grays and oranges, making any bright colors stand out flawlessly. You could take a twisted Wizard of Oz book, throw it onto a neo avant-garde painting, and you would get this amazing world of Machinarium. I sometimes found myself starring at the screen looking at all of the activity that was going on, instead of playing the game.

The level design never gets frustrating as the controls are simply pointing and clicking, the only hard part is finding where exactly you're supposed to go. Through out each level your robot collects items paring them together helping you solve puzzles and make your way through each level. The puzzles never become redundant as they're each unique and different. Machinarium is shaping up to be an amazing game. I hope to return tomorrow to get in a couple more levels, and update with you with my findings.
Till tomorrow, and as always, download, download, download.

Indie Spotlight - Four Hour RPG
The 4 Hour RPG was created, by JW, for Poppenkast's 4 Hours to Glory competition. In this little, but awesome, RPG you're given a random class and level to start off with. There are four levels total each progressively harder. Every class is equipped with a standard sword and special ability that's unique to that class.

The enemies are fun to pounce around as you melee them with your sword and special ability. The bosses become bigger as you progress through the levels giving you an exciting challenge each time you battle.
There are a couple cheats to this game, which after you finish the entire thing, gives you a new challenge to beat this RPG again and again. If you press the space bar you will level up automatcially and if you press ctrl you will pull up the map.
Overall, this simple and fun RPG will have you playing for four hours. Just kidding, but how ever long you play you will enjoy every second of it. You can download this RPG here! Till next time on the Indie Spotlight download…download…download!

Download of the Week - Alien Versus Predator 2 Demo
Let's get the logistics out of the way. The Alien Versus Predator 2 Demo includes one Marine mission, one Alien mission and one Predator mission. There are customizable features and the ability to play with a joystick, but this is an old school FPS so a keyboard and mouse is a must. If you do die within each mission you must start at the beginning again, so there is a bit of trial and error with this demo. Now that we have that out of the way, I enjoyed the Marine and Predator missions the most, because of their replay value. In the Marine mission you start off at an abandoned base looking for any known survivors. You're given five powerful weapons that you'll want to take advantage of in each part of the level. My favorite gun is the shotgun, and although it had a slow firing rate the weapon has a nice instant kill feature. Now beware the dark lighting as it keeps you on your toes while Aliens lurk everywhere. The sounds of scratching and Alien chatter keep you constantly looking behind your back.
Next we have the Predator mission. You're given a nice set of weapons, one of which is the Spear Gun. What makes this weapon so fun to is the ability to zoom in with your Predator vision and cut off heads sending them flying off into the air. The Predator mission is a bit more fun, because of the array of gadgets, visions, and weapons the Predator has at its disposal. The cloaking device makes your practically invisible giving you the upper hand during battle. But beware there are laser guided machine guns that can detect you no matter what.
Finally, the Alien mission is the black sheep of the three. There's not much to do and you don't have any weapons. All you really have is a slash and pounce attack that gets old quickly. There is a slight bonus if you're able to match the Alien cross hairs with a Marine Soldiers body as your extendable teeth will shoot out and chop of his head. Other than that I got stuck mid way through the level with no light and no direction to follow.
Despite the Alien mission, the AVP 2 Demo has a high replay value that will keep you entertained for hours. You can download AVP 2 Demo here and you can download any patch, demo, mod, map etc at the Gamespot Downloads Page. Till next time, download, download, download.

Indie Spotlight - The Unfinished Swan
My buddy, Lark Anderson , told me about an indie game that you paint your way through levels to accomplish your objective. Instantly I thought it was an indie game, due to the out of the box like concept. Recently I saw a posting about the winners of the IGF Student Showcase, and this game called The Unfinished Swan developed by Ian Dallas. I clicked the video, and sure enough it was the game Lark told me about.
The video starts off in a white room where you shoot black paint all over the place to find your path, as well as any other objects that could help along the way. Then, you move outside where everything is pitch black, except for your paint that turns white to guide you through. Hidden messages are everywhere giving you hints and questions from what's to come.
The game looks and sounds amazing. I can't wait to try the demo out. The Unfinished Swan is being prototyped in XNA and the developer hopes to have a demo out sometime this month. We'll let you know as soon as we have a demo.

Download of the Week - Caesar IV Demo
I'm a huge fan of the Real Time Strategy genre, from the Command & Conquer series to StarCraft. Whenever developers come out with a demo for an RTS it usually includes a tutorial, a couple missions and sometimes a bit more making them worth your time to download. That said Caesar IV is no exception. In this demo you are given a simple tutorial, plenty of money to grow your city and city building limits.
Although, the tutorial is a bit annoying, as it takes a bit of your lower left hand corner, it's easy to minimize and pop back up when needed. The demo includes a lot of buildings to choose from helping you expand your empire quickly and efficiently. In addition to city building, you're given advisers that help you mange every aspect of your city, so don't piss them off. The council comes in handy, especially when I tend build more housing without supplying enough jobs. Although, you're given a lot of money to start out with, it quickly dwindles away if you're not careful. Starting off with a lot of cash allows you to try out almost every building, which is rare in most RTS demos.
Caesar IV Demo will have you replaying this scenario over and over again. You can download Caesar IV here and you can download any patch, demo, mod, map etc at the Gamespot Downloads Page. Till next time, download, download, download.

Indie Spotlight - MidEast Crisis 2
Ever since I started working as a File Producer for Gamespot I've uploaded many demos, wallpapers, patches, and of course MODS! Now I was introduced to mods way back when Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 came out, when I was entrenched in an aggressive online battle with player IHATEBANANAS. For the first hour I was kicking ass, and my allied troops took over one of his bases and stole his technology. Soon after I started mixing factions and building up a massive army for battle, until a monkey parachuted down to into my base. My first reaction was to say, "Awwwwww how cute! Look at the monkey in the parachute." Then 50 more decided to drop in too! I was speechless, because I didn't know where they came from until player IHATEBANANAS sent me a message saying, "I hope you hate bananas like I do. Goodbye!" Then the 51 cute monkeys blew up into a toxic liquid engulfing my entire base and newly created super army. Within a couple minutes, IHATEBANANAS had taken over my base and aggressively introduced me to the mods.
I'm a huge Command & Conquer fan and have played them all, except for the black sheep Renegade, and ever since I was rudely introduced to mods I have always tweaked my version of the game. There are some beautiful conversions, maps and balance tweaks out there in the CnC mod world that bring new life to each game.

MidEast Crisis 2 is one of those mods, but this is not just a mod for Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, but a total conversion of the game. MidEast Crisis 2 is set in the near-future in the middle-east. This TC (Total Conversion) includes three factions (UN Peacekeepers, IDF, Guardians of Islam) each with drastically different gameplay. Each of these new factions is impressive as they will satisfy all types of warfare if you're more of a turtle fighter and like to build up your base you go with the UN Peacekeepers, but if you like to spread out and get a bit dirty, you go with either the IDF or Guardians of Islam.
One great attribute to this mod is how the map is more involved in the war then usual CnC maps. Usually CnC maps have you capture hospitals, garages, miscellaneous buildings for your troops to garrison, but MidEast Crisis 2 takes it further. Almost the entire map has a function, where some factions take over buildings and towers to gain the upper hand and others take over gas stations and oil derricks to fuel their armies. This style of warfare plays a bit like Company of Heroes, but with a lot more interaction with your terrain.
The resource collecting in this mod moves away from just gathering Tiberium or some metal to fund your war. MEC 2 gives each faction a unique way to gather resources, from deploying reporters into the field and capturing the enemy in action to taking over Town Halls and Wireless Towers for additional resources. This system should give players new tactical abilities instead of the usual one resource method of past CnC's. For now the U.N faction is unavailable till the next update.

Downloaded Special - Diablo II Patch
Here's the official posting from Blizzard -
We're in the process of working on Diablo II content patch 1.13, and we want to try to include the Diablo community's most important changes in our production schedule. To achieve this we're asking for your input on what you'd like to see in this patch. However, we're making it a bit stricter than a full-blown wish list.
If you were to get an advance look at the patch notes for Diablo II 1.13, what is the one patch note you would want to see?
Our goal is to get an overall sense of the single most important request from every member of the community. We want as many posts as we can get for the largest cross section, so if you have friends who used to play Diablo II or just don't frequent the forums as much as you do, let them know this is here so we can get their "#1 patch note" too.
Please be mindful that we're not going to be able to make every change mentioned, but hopefully with your feedback we can prioritize and do our best to cover as much as possible.
So there you have it. Now let's show Blizzard how great of a Diablo II community we have here on GameSpot. You can send your feedback here on the Official Battle.net Forum Page.

Download of the Week - Tom Clancy's HAWX Demo
I've been a fan of flying simulation and arcade games for some time. When it comes to flight games I'm usually playing Nintendo Top Gun or any game in the Ace Combat series. When I heard that the Tom Clancy series was going into flight I was intrigued, because some of my favorite games comes from that franchise. Today, Ubisoft released the anticipated Tom Clancy HAWX demo, which offers one tutorial mission, one regular mission and customizable features.
Playing through the tutorial you get a sense of the new gameplay mechanics HAWX's is bringing to the world of flight games. There's this action camera that zooms out to a third person view allowing you to see all of your enemies that surround you. You can toggle this feature on and off, and mixing this combination will give you the upper hand against your enemies. The camera works well when you are up against multiple bogies as they tend to fire multiple missiles at you.
Once you've learned the basics you are put in real battle. The mission is set in Rio de Janeiro on the brink of invasion from enemies of the sea, ground and air. You, your team, and another squadron are assigned the task to eradicate the enemy from the city.
During battle I never ran out of missiles to fire, and I rarely used my turrets, because they became ineffective to fast moving enemy. The mission is long and fun, and I've already played the demo a couple times. I'll be playing more of it tonight.
You can find the Tom Clancy HAWX demo and other demos on the GameSpot Downloads Page!

Indie Spotlight - Samorost 1
Samorost 1 is a point and click adventure puzzle that, although a short game, keeps you playing over and over again. The team at Amanita Design has created a beautiful world where you play as a small white Martian disturbed by an oncoming planet. You must fly over to the oncoming planet and divert its path from utter destruction.

Through out each level you are given new and exciting environments that keep you guessing and wanting more with each click. Almost everything is interactive and has a purpose, but it's the stuff that has no purpose that sets the game apart from most.
Rich colors, interesting aliens, and complex puzzles make you wish that they extended the game, well they didn't exactly extend the story, but Amanita Design did create Samorost 2, which is browser only at this point. We'll keep you updated if anything changes.Check out Samorost 1 and many other free indie games on the GameSpot Downloads Page. Till next time download…download…download!
