Black creator back with Bodycount

New destructible-environment, first-person shooter from Stuart Black and Codemasters' Guildford Studio revealed via UK magazine leak.

Though it wasn't a runaway hit with critics, the 2006 PlayStation 2 and Xbox game Black got a cult following for its ultrarealistic over-the-top gunplay. It was also one of the few shooters of the last console generation to feature largely destructible environments, which allowed players to take out opponents by blowing up the structures sheltering them.

Black 2 still hasn't surfaced, even though EA Games president Frank Gibeau mentioned it was being considered in a 2008 interview with GameSpot. However, one of its creators, lead designer Stuart Black, is apparently involved in a new shooter project at Codemasters, according to a prematurely published--and quickly retracted--story by Official Xbox Magazine UK.

According to the briefly visible story, which lives on courtesy of Google Cache, Black has assembled many members of the game Black's development at Codemasters' Guilford studio. Though largely free of detail, the article says that the game will be a first-person shooter focused on weaponry. The article describes the game as "frankly mental," and the issue's cover claims the game has "astonishing destruction," implying it will once again feature destructible environments.

GameSpot will have more details on Bodycount as they become available.

Right when i took a look at the screenshots i thought of BLACK. I have a feeling this will be one of those games that seems like it should be on ps2 not a current gen system.

@ Petercairns - this is being hyped as black's spiritual sequel.

EA owns the Black IP, but there's no copyright on an explosive single-player first-person shooter - Black didn't sell on story. It sold on raw thrills.

give me more destruction and physics, I'm sick of pretty games where nothing breaks no matter how much you shoot it and blow explosives into it.

Its about time a game besides Bad Company started using destructible environments. This is the 20th century isn't it?

    @ AlmightyMax

I think that's more in reference the detail in the look and mechanical function of the guns themselves, not the game play.

Unless it has a dismemberment system as good as Soldier of Fortune (1) and guns as good as COD4, I'm not interested.

I loved Black on the Xbox. It was a game ahead of its time. I was hoping that there would be a Black 2.

I have been waiting on a sequel to "Black" ever since I played through the first one. I hope that Stuart Black's next shooter evolves with a more engrossing story and more sophisticated gameplay.

I liked Black, it also had some amazing graphics (Many PC/PS3/360 games actually look worse) and it was very challenging, I just hope that Bodycount is as good if not better than Black.

Black was a great game with some of the most intense and immersive levels and firefights I've played in an FPS! I hope these guys pull off a similar experience with their new project!

I would have liked a sequel to Black, but this seems promising as well. Hopefully they have a multiplayer component this time around, I have a feeling that if Black had that it would have been the Playstation equivalent of Halo.

I liked Black. I thought it was pushing the hardware of both consoles at the time, but soon after it was released came the 360, so people soon forgot about it.
