King of Fighters gets the big-screen treatment, Turbo Squid's new user-made-content site launches, American McGee's Grimm gets GameTapped, and Peter Jackson might still produce the Halo movie.
King of Fighters film rights scooped up
Variety Asia is reporting that SNK Playmore's King of Fighters is joining the growing list of game franchises headed to the big screen. Last week, the film production company Double Edge Entertainment--which is coowned by the Taiwanese government and computer-hardware manufacturer BenQ--announced it was beginning preproduction on the project. Hong Kong action director Gordon Chan is attached to direct the film, which does not currently have a release date. The next King of Fighters game is King of Fighters: Maximum Impact 3, which is currently in development for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
GameFlood launches with $25,000 mod and map contest
GameFlood, a new Web site specializing in hosting user-created content, officially launched today. To celebrate the kickoff, the division of game-content company Turbo Squid is holding a contest which will dole out some $25,000 in prize money to amateur game designers who submit maps and mods on GameFlood.com until July 16. Between July 2 and 16, winners will be chosen by the GameFlood community in the following categories: best first-person shooter multiplayer mod, best FPS multiplayer map, best real-time multiplayer mod, best RTS multiplayer map, and best role-playing game mod (single or multiplayer). A full list of eligible games, which includes such titles as Age of Empires III, Civilization IV, and Half-Life 2, can be found on the official GameFlood.com Web site.
Foundation 9 spins off Canadian studio
Next month, independent developer collective Foundation 9 Entertainment will spin off its studio in Prince Edward Island, Canada. The studio, which will henceforth be called Other Ocean Interactive, will be completely independent, and will be headed by Foundation 9 cofounder Andrew Ayre. "As F9E's growth strategy has evolved, we have recognized the need to focus on larger studios," was the official reason for the spin-off that CEO Jon Goldman gave in a statement. Foundation 9 owns a series of formerly independent studios, including Backbone Entertainment, The Collective, Amaze, Digital Eclipse, and Shiny Entertainment.
McGee, GameTap getting Grimm
Notable game designer American McGee has struck a deal with GameTap, Turner Broadcasting's online PC game service, to distribute his forthcoming title Grimm. Based on the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, the game will be released in an episodic format much like GameTap's popular Sam & Max series. There will be 24 episodes in all, with each based on a different Grimm story such as Little Red Riding Hood or Rumpelstiltskin. The first in the series is slated to launch next spring, and will be developed at McGee's studio, Spicy Horse.
Jackson hasn't given up on Halo movie
It's been months since 20th Century Fox and Universal pulled out of the Halo movie. However, Lord of the Rings writer-director-producer Peter Jackson says he's confident the project will regain momentum in the wake of the release of Halo 3 later this year. The filmmaker also said he's still interested in executive-producing the project--provided that novice director Neill Blomkamp still helms the project. "We wouldn't want to do it with anybody else," he told the New Zealand-based Web site Stuff. "It'll be Neill's call."
GameTap's value continues to increase. I can't wait to see what's in store as their library reaches the 1,000 game mark.
Halo Movie BETTER come out...Peter Jackson knows he'll get death threats if he puts a forever-hault to the project. It has such big promise of revenue, there's no reason to stop.Just find other people to work with if people aren't cooperating.
The next block buster to shatter all other grossing movies? Yeah, it's Halo. Will it be a good movie? Well, I loved Neill Blomkamp's short films he did, they were just great, but can he take an already established liscense and bible and turn that into a 2 to 2+ hour long movie? Who knows. I won't say it'll be good, I'll just say I HOPE it's good. I'll go see it more than once in theaters if it is... I saw Serenity 4 times, with my different friends and family members, so don't think I won't do it.
Even if the halo movie sucked they would be making a lot of money from it, but I still want to see an amazing halo movie.
From all other directors out there I'm really glad that Peter Jackson is doing the Halo movie. I'm just hoping that it will actually be GOOD instead of the other video game movie which usually fails.
I think they shouldn't have given up on the movie in the frist place so that they have alot of time to make a good movie with alot of good effects and a legendary storyline so that it could release like 2 weeks-1 month after Halo 3 comes out and dominate the box office.Shouldn't comes too late.Another thing,if they make a Halo movie series,Halo fans would have something else to look forward too:)
Halo and KOF, cool! I would like a Freedom Fighters movie but never mind that... Can't wait 'till they're finished and ready to hit the big screen!
The better make it. I remember them saying early '08 release then saying that they will never make it. Man I was angry. I really want this thing to happen. It'd be sweet and I think that it could be a record breaking movie making something like $50million dollars in the box office on the first day. Maybe I'm dreaming; it'd just be so cool.
Peter Jackson rules. Halo rules. But with Jackson just producing I'm a little worried. I know that his CG company rules, and if they get Andy Serkis to do some mokap, it will me cool, but it will still suck if the director and writers suck. Hopefully they won't let us down.
Sweet! A KOF movie! This is something I haven't even dared dream about! I hope it's about the Orochi saga, Kyo is the lead then. Only problem is... think of all the crappy video-game movies, especially fighting game ones. Street Fighter movie, anyone? (not to mention games based on the movie, based on the game: I always crack up when I hear: Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game).
Sweet! KOF great games now movie gonna be badass! but Halo they should wait after Halo 3 comes out so ppl can get whole story cant wait!
Please, no more live action game-movies... They are simply too painful and horrific. If you're going to do it, at least animate it. King of Fighters simply has too many characters to devote enough time to basic things like character development. That's the only reason why the first Mortal Kombat movie was even halfway decent. And Halo... just, no.
posted by surrpo "was the masterchief a robot or clone or just a dude in a suit. what was the deal with him did they ever show his face he might be black lol" actually, in halo: the flood (the novelization of halo 1) the book describes him as being white, too white, like a being that hasnt had any sun and lived in a dark cave all their life. this is due to the biological implants they used on him. so unless if im mistaken, he is caucassian
Can we please stop calling McGee "noteable?" Can't we all just admit the guy was a one-hit wonder and let him and his lame games die the obscure death they deserve? Do we really need celebrities that badly?
A Halo movie will be great, I so hope it gets made, hopefully soon. Though it will need a good backer (i.e. with some money) or it could be a little rubish. we will have to wait and see.
Oh a Halo movie please! Put it back on the cards! And: 1) no, you haven't yet seen the Master Chief's face - you go close in Halo:Combat Evolved right at the end he takes off his camera out of the line of sight of the 'camera' and also in the cinematic trailer for Halo 3, the Master Chief loses his helmet but you're seeing everything from his POV, so you don't see his face 2) He's a cyborg of sorts - a human who was a 'cut above the rest' who underwent augmentation (physical and psychological) and equipped with the best equipment out there (including his flashy suit) to become a Spartan. All the Spartan 2's with the exception of the Master Chief were on Reach (war manufacturing world of sorts) for upgrading when it was attacked and destroyed by the Covenant. Pretty sloppy having your entire force of elite super soldiers in the one place imo, but hey, who am I to judge :P This all happened before the events in Halo: Combat Evolved, hence there being no other Spartans around in Halo and Halo 2. In the upcoming Xbox360 title 'Halo Wars', the setting is pre-Halo:CE, thus meaning there will be Spartans galore to fight Elites and Grunts et al in the first battles between the forces of Earth and the Covenant.
I'm looking forward to the movie, myself. I'm a huge SNK fan and there's also some pretty good names to it. Gordan Chan is a very good director (though it would have been even better if Tsui Hark would have done it!) and hopefully it will turn out well.
The world doesn't need a smurfs in space movie. The only game adaption that ever survived as a movie was Silent Hill. And thats because it has a story.. Thats what I think.
was the masterchief a robot or clone or just a dude in a suit. what was the deal with him did they ever show his face he might be black lol
Halo will IMO be the greatest movie ever asspecially with whose working on it I really hope it picks up again soon and cant wait to see it when its finally made.
Hermitkermit - "I loved that short Film nice and very realistic in terms of a actual alien invasion.' I'm sorry, you completely lost me there. But yeah, a full length Alive in Jorburg would be cool. But I'd rather have Halo.
CausticBox - ""Halo would be an awesome movie." I remember thinking the exact same thing for Doom. I should've known better." The problem with Doom was that it got hijacked by 'The Rock,' Halo hopefully won't have that problem.
Halo HAS the potential to be a great movie, and if anyone can use that potential its Jackson. But im still a bit unsure.
"Halo would be an awesome movie." I remember thinking the exact same thing for Doom. I should've known better.
More crapola game to movie translations for a world that has already had its share of horrors from Uwe Boll. God Help Us All.
A movie based on a game has the potential to be really cool.. unfortunately.. every attempt at it has sucked horribly.. too bad =( But hey.. peter jackson is directing this one? LOTR was dope.. hopefully that wasn't just a fluke
KoF notables. Chuck Norris, Steven Segal, and Van Dame play the three heros. Whatever their names were.
