BizSpots: GameFlood, Foundation 9, McGee, Halo and KOF films
King of Fighters gets the big-screen treatment, Turbo Squid's new user-made-content site launches, American McGee's Grimm gets GameTapped, and Peter Jackson might still produce the Halo movie.
King of Fighters film rights scooped up
Variety Asia is reporting that SNK Playmore's King of Fighters is joining the growing list of game franchises headed to the big screen. Last week, the film production company Double Edge Entertainment--which is coowned by the Taiwanese government and computer-hardware manufacturer BenQ--announced it was beginning preproduction on the project. Hong Kong action director Gordon Chan is attached to direct the film, which does not currently have a release date. The next King of Fighters game is King of Fighters: Maximum Impact 3, which is currently in development for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
GameFlood launches with $25,000 mod and map contest
GameFlood, a new Web site specializing in hosting user-created content, officially launched today. To celebrate the kickoff, the division of game-content company Turbo Squid is holding a contest which will dole out some $25,000 in prize money to amateur game designers who submit maps and mods on GameFlood.com until July 16. Between July 2 and 16, winners will be chosen by the GameFlood community in the following categories: best first-person shooter multiplayer mod, best FPS multiplayer map, best real-time multiplayer mod, best RTS multiplayer map, and best role-playing game mod (single or multiplayer). A full list of eligible games, which includes such titles as Age of Empires III, Civilization IV, and Half-Life 2, can be found on the official GameFlood.com Web site.
Foundation 9 spins off Canadian studio
Next month, independent developer collective Foundation 9 Entertainment will spin off its studio in Prince Edward Island, Canada. The studio, which will henceforth be called Other Ocean Interactive, will be completely independent, and will be headed by Foundation 9 cofounder Andrew Ayre. "As F9E's growth strategy has evolved, we have recognized the need to focus on larger studios," was the official reason for the spin-off that CEO Jon Goldman gave in a statement. Foundation 9 owns a series of formerly independent studios, including Backbone Entertainment, The Collective, Amaze, Digital Eclipse, and Shiny Entertainment.
McGee, GameTap getting Grimm
Notable game designer American McGee has struck a deal with GameTap, Turner Broadcasting's online PC game service, to distribute his forthcoming title Grimm. Based on the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, the game will be released in an episodic format much like GameTap's popular Sam & Max series. There will be 24 episodes in all, with each based on a different Grimm story such as Little Red Riding Hood or Rumpelstiltskin. The first in the series is slated to launch next spring, and will be developed at McGee's studio, Spicy Horse.
Jackson hasn't given up on Halo movie
It's been months since 20th Century Fox and Universal pulled out of the Halo movie. However, Lord of the Rings writer-director-producer Peter Jackson says he's confident the project will regain momentum in the wake of the release of Halo 3 later this year. The filmmaker also said he's still interested in executive-producing the project--provided that novice director Neill Blomkamp still helms the project. "We wouldn't want to do it with anybody else," he told the New Zealand-based Web site Stuff. "It'll be Neill's call."
