Irrational Games' much-anticipated first-person shooter gets a launch date for later this year.
Gamers will be able to explore the flying steampunk city of Columbia in October of this year, 2K Games confirmed today. BioShock: Infinite, Irrational Games' first full game since the launch of the original BioShock in 2007, will be in shops on October 16 in the United States and on October 19 "internationally," according to 2K.
BioShock Infinite was officially unveiled in August of 2010 and confirmed for a 2012 release. The game has similarities to the original BioShock but is not a sequel per se, the firm has said. It is a first-person shooter set in Columbia, a flying city in an early alternate 20th century where utopian ideals have given way to chaos in a sea of weaponry, plasmid-like powers, and political upheaval.
Into this mess steps the game's protagonist, Booker DeWitt, a former member of the feared Pinkerton National Detective Agency, which was America's largest security company in the late 19th century. According to GameSpot's latest preview, DeWitt will enter a world where steampunk robots have replaced horses and people, and where crazed citizens foment revolution with strange powers--and lots of guns.
BioShock: Infinite is due for release on the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. A BioShock game is also in development for the PlayStation Vita, though as recently as October last year this was said to only be in the "paper design stage." In August last year, one analyst suggested the game would be a significant financial boon for 2K's parent firm, Take Two, saying it could ship 4.9 million copies. If the next Bioshock takes place miles beneath the Earths Crust...I'm officially boycotting Bioshock...cause you know that's where its going to go next...
One of my most anticipated games of all time, with BioShock remaining the greatest game ever made. Considering Irrational's amazing track record, an updated engine and Ken Levine's genius writing, BioShock Infinite is going to be unbelievable... I can't bear the wait, but must :(
Awesome!...only 7 months of waiting left. I still love playing Boishock 1 and 2 back to back plus Minerva's Den as a finale.
Looking forward to this one. Bioshock was - and still is - one of the most amazing games I've played. As jeremy- noted, a hardcore mode is perfect, as the original did get easier as the game went on. But the original has what many games lack - a truly compelling story and environment which made up for any deficiencies it may of had. At least there looks to be no co-op - or no deathmatch. We don't need multi-player in a Bioshock game. Just a great single player experience.
@Vlaimir_Lem86 i bought Bioshock 1 from retail that wasnt attached to steam/gfwl (which i personally liked as an old pcgamer). I screw up on the drm, my windows registry screwed up, had to reformat. The drm rejected me, due to duplicated installation, contact secureRom, waited a week for reset. Finally able to play it, just to find the game was filled with graphical bugs. :( as because of that i bought bioshock 2 for x360.
This studio needs to be rewarded for adding a hardcore mode to a shooter. Definate buy in october. The first bioshock was a nice twist on the shooter genre, For me it was largely the graphics and environment that was beyond what I had seen at the time. However, as an old hand on shooters I've always played them on hard mode and found the bioshock series to get EASIER as you go along because you get more abilities which you can exploit. The fact the studio identifies this and has created a harder mode is noteworthy, i will definately purchase this game and look forward to a challenging game with a nice twist. Certainly, I must admit playing games solo player without a companion seems lacking after so many studio's have added this over the years, so i like this too. Its a bit of a shame there isnt multi-player co-op but all good things in time.
@buying1999 maybe it's the best console, I wouldn't know since I don't own both, but a PC isn't a console. It's so much more.
@Vlaimir_Lem86 If you ran them on your computer, then you have SecuRom in your kernel, even if you deleted the games long ago.
@y3ivan Cant say i remember horrible DRM for either game tbh. Games ran flawlessly on my PC's, personally.
@faceplam its normal to game take this long to go out, only call of duty release once a year, in fact its better they take time and do everything right
Seriously 2k. You showed this game in 2010 when it's coming out in 2012. now it's February Bio shock is coming OCTOBER! Either there's going to be allot of stuff in this game or you just like us to wait.
September: Borderlands 2. October: BioShock Infinite. I will save all amounts of money I can get my hands on to buy these two games. I can't wait for Infinite -- it will be marvellous.
I remember when 1st played the original bioshock its was a totally new experiance for me with all the plasmids where i didnt just have to shoot people or race cars, the eye opener somthing i have never played before was Double Agent it was such a blast enjoying stealth for the 1st time, and the oblivion intruduced me to RPG, shooters are so over rated we need more creativity on how to take out computer generated enemies in the form of pixels on tv screens
@alpha_unit97. What are you complaining about? Didn't you see what's happened to so many sequels that they didn't bother to take the time to make sure there weren't tons of bugs, unfinished plots & bad graphics? Give them time to make the game great instead of just rushing out like idiots.
Are you serious? I've been waiting for almost a year now and now your telling me to for wait pretty much another one?
Bioshock Infinite and Borderlands 2 within a month of each other? Awesome. Been waiting a long time for both games. And they both will have had a proper 3 year development cycle, unlike most other sequels nowadays.
Bringing some old world class to the bland shooter world of today. Bioshock is my favorite shooter series.
@Vlaimir_Lem86 i guess you did know how horrible was bioshock1 &2 for the PC. I felt that 2k didnt really cared about PC games with horrible DRM, Bad PC support
@buying1999 Pretty sure you meant to say PC... always has, and always will be, superior to any console. Get ya facts straight brah.
@buying1999: don't you mean the superior PC as neither the xbox OR ps3 could stand up to a pc in terms of power?
With this coming out, this fall is shaping up to be another amazing time of news games coming out!!!!
