New Square Enix RPG at top spot and above Resident Evil 6 and new Namco Bandai RPG; 3DS XL back in high sales groove.
The latest role-playing game from Square Enix was Japan's flavor of the week for the October 7 to October 14 period, followed by Resident Evil 6, a few others from Namco Bandai.
According to the latest Media Create numbers, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy was at first place on the software charts with 141,529 units sold. The 3DS RPG is a new IP from Square Enix and features turn-based combat, a brave and default stance switch system, and multiple job classes to mix and match. The collector's edition of the game features a poster, a soundtrack album, an art book, and an exclusive cover.
Past top spot holder Resident Evil 6 went down a notch from the past week. The PS3 version of the game sold 92,921 units while the Xbox 360 version was at 34th place with no sales number stated. For more information on Resident Evil 6, check out GameSpot's review and video feature.
Namco Bandai's new RPGs made their debuts for the week. Project X Zone for the 3DS was at third place with 85,539 units sold while Tokitowa was at fifth place with 32,215 units sold. The former is a strategy RPG where characters from Sega, Capcom, and Namco Bandai team up and fight in a newly created universe, while the latter is a fully 2D-animated RPG that combines turn-based and action elements.
The 3DS did well sales-wise due to Bravely Default and Project X Zone being released for the platform. The XL version topped the list at 52,079 units while the regular version sold 27,221 units. The PS3 moved 26,312 units while the PSP was at 15,585 units. The PS Vita was still at 6,134 units, a low number compared to its older cousin.

potentially RE6 had a chance to be much bigger that it is now. it just feels like it was released too quickly. a few more months in development and it would of been fantastic. But now new game releases are strategically planned to maximise profit. they dont want to be released the same time as other "blockbusters" So called overated games like GOW etc.
Japan is developing less quality in the hd gaming market because any talent that they did have have long since seperated. Capcom saked Shinji Mikami after the GREAT res 4, The new ninja gaiden game no longer has Tomonobu Itagaki. And with the final fantasy games, anybody who worked on those ps1 classics have long since seperated. So will there be a remake of FF7? not likely. some questionalbe desicions that these game developers are doing. They want to favor new talent, but they are talentless and degrading the japanese gaming industry.
Bring back the people who knew how to make good games. At least now we still got platinum games for japan and dark souls. i hope they will find a way to make great games again.
I seriously want that collector's edition of Bravely Default. Thinking I might have to pick it up within the next few days... That said, I hate the thought of buying another 3DS just to play it (it is region locked, correct?). :/
On the hardware side, it's nice to see that all of Sony's consoles are up there and still selling. It was a surprise to see that the PS2 is still moving units, which is nothing short of amazing since the PS2 is still the best selling console of all time. However, seeing that the PSP is outselling the PS Vita makes me even more worried for its future. The Vita's hardware is so amazing, but it's the lack of 3rd party support and advertising is what's hurting it. I really hope in the coming months and in 2013 that the PS Vita will get some better titles and support. 2013 for the PS3 is shaping up to be a great year, especially 1st party wise (The Last of Us, anyone?). Come on Sony, show the PS Vita some love and advertise it for what it is first: A PORTABLE PS3!!!
you would think square would release bravely default on the consoles online stores to help move more copies. i'm sure there are quite a few people who would pick it up that way.
i wanna know what ever happened to the Resident Evil 6 on PC?was it like THAT BAD that they said ok we don't wanna hear Insults from PC players OH NO THEY ARE THE WORST! an answer from Editor plz?
wow bravely default was a success.... hope it comes over...
sad to see project x zone bombed :P...but i still hope that one comes over too.
@KBFloYd I'm hoping for the same. I just checked something--- It's been said that BD-FF is a spiritual successor to FF-4 Heroes of Light...which, well, it is.
If history repeats itself, that game came out in Japan on 10/29/09. ...it came out everywhere else early October of 2010. ...Hopefully it takes less than a year to get this game. I Could learn Japanese in the amount of time : )
here is a theory, i think in japan, handheld sales are booming because more and more people just dont have room for large hd tvs. especially in places tokyo. even the hotels are pods there. Or maybe they just dont dig microsoft lol.
@jules2626 I think it has more to do with the number of people using mass transit. With so many people on trains and the like, portable gaming is simply more convenient than console gaming.
The house which I spent my homestay in was two stories, but still felt somewhat cramped compared to my own two story home.
@jules2626 lol please don't post about countries you obviously know nothing about as it makes you look incredibly ignorant.
i said it was just a theory. i somehow touched a nerve with you in my comment? so enlighten me on how you are so knowledgeable about this? oh and i have been to japan twice.
I'm I glad I bought the 3ds xl, soo may good games now, plus lots more to come! Fire Emblem 3ds announcement made me get rid of my Vita a while back! Best decision ever!
@NoobNationUK good games if you have a jpn xl as from what i hear the 3ds is region locked and these 2 games don't have localization announcements as far as i'm aware :/
Looking at the console sales, why does MS still bother with Japan? It feels like they're trying to sell a DVD to a person without a player at this point. They can't possibly be making any money there.
People in Japan are idiots. RE 6 is probably one the worst games ever created in the history of Mankind.
thats a bit harsh, Res 6 was a good game,, the mercs is the best thing about it. i dont agree with 4.5. after finishing the game myself, 4.5 is quite slanderous. at least shoud be a rental. but i also dont agree with 39/40 that famitsu gave it. totally unjustified.
@KingofCabal you sir have never played superman 64...
@KingofCabal ...because nobody bought the game outside Japan? I'm pretty sure it sold well everywhere, regardless of quality.
@KingofCabal Japanese folks like to praise their things, you have to respect that. And for what is worth, RE6 is not that bad if you can handle a handful of Hollywood style action scenes and some Dark Souls punishing moments.
@Hate_Squad well its a slightly enhanced port on an expensive handheld. its not that surprising that it wouldn't do that well. it didn't have big enough differences that people would choose it over the ps2 version. the least they could of done was add a femc and lots of costumes like p3p did. plus a crap load of people already played the original version of p4.
the best console in the world is sony and thats for sure everyone has own likes but for me sony is the best

@ABEzilla116 you must really be loving windows 8 and office...but hey theres diablo 3 too...
capcom RE series has been terrible in my eye's since code veronica, dont like the new emphasis on guns nor the over the shoulder gameplay, prefer the old stlye much more, only thing I like from capcom in recent year's was asura wrath and that was more of a interactive anime with gameplay teasing,
unimpressive numbers for re6.........looks like ca$hcom or crapcom is feeling the burn..........think twice when your gonna release re7 and this time listen to fan angst more closely.
@staranise You must not have seen the total sales for "Resident Evil 6" so far. It is crushing just about everything out worldwide and selling like hot cakes in Japan. Go Capcom!!!
Great! I'm very happy that BD is selling well, this increase the chances for an european version :)
.....and come on SE, you can port it to the Vita, right? Come on!
If it utilizes both screens then it probably won't, at least the Vita is capable of AR because I know that's used in BD.
@MalakTawus Why a port when you could just ask for a new game instead?
@leeko_link Obviously since i want to play BD on Vita (yup, i don't like 3ds too much tbh), that's why i want a port :)
