Even if you've played similar Mario games, this one is still top notch, especially with 4 players. I have a tendency to yell "Bubble Up!" a lot though so my friends don't get too far behind and die.
Nintendo's mushroom-munching plumber sells nearly 1 million in one week as Wii sells 106K to lead hardware.
Nintendo began the week on the right foot, when Famitsu publisher Enterbrain announced that New Super Mario Bros. Wii had set a console record with 936,734 units sold from December 3-6, the game's first four days of availability. Fellow stat-tracking firm Media Create has now corroborated those figures, placing Nintendo's latest platformer at the top of its November 30-December 6 chart with 934,739 units sold.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii wasn't the only game to land with a big splash during the week. Sega's Phantasy Star Portable 2 for the PSP debuted in second with 286,896 units sold. The finish just outpaced fellow PSP title Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam vs. Gundam Next Plus, which sold 222,985 units. Koei's Samurai Warriors 3 for the Wii landed in fourth, achieving first-week sales of 121,182.
Having topped Media Create's November 23-29 chart, Level 5's Professor Layton and the Flute of Malevolent Destiny sank to fifth with 85,034 units sold. Two other best-selling DS titles, Tomodachi Collection and Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver, landed in sixth and eighth with respective 74,951 and 63,026 tallies. PokePark Wii: Pikachu no Daibouken opened in seventh with 63,760 units sold, while the PS3 edition of Assassin's Creed II was the final new release to chart, landing in 10th with 48,748 units sold.
The Wii handily secured top billing on the hardware charts during the week, selling 106,555 units in Japan. Sony's PSP shifted 67,880 units, a figure bolstered slightly by the PSP Go's 3,412 sales, while the PS3 finished third with 57,782 units. Nintendo's string of handhelds came next, with the DSi LL, DSi, and DS Lite selling a respective 53,791, 51,635, and 8,367 units. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2 rounded out the chart, selling 5,314 units and 2,277 units each.

@mariokart64fan Who's putting graphics first? You misread my comment. I'm saying that a Mario, Zelda, or Metroid game in HD is better than the same Mario, Zelda, or Metroid game with the Wii's current graphics. Good graphics don't have to come at the sacrifice of good gameplay. You can have both. How many Wii games are getting Game of the Year nominations, compared to PS3 and Xbox360 games this year?
i own 3 hahaa and as stated below, the only difference is text clearity , i do not see any graphic update when switching fro ma sd tv to hd tv , , lol so wait your emplying ps3 has 16 processors double the power when on a hd tv , , if so your so full of it ,
@mariokart64fan - if you think an HDTV males no difference to an Xbox or PS3 game then it's obvious you've never actually seen one!!
and let me scream this in your ear so loud they ring THE WII DID NOT COST ME AN ARM AND A LEG IT DID NOT HAVE ME RUN OUT TO BUY SOM OUTRAGIOUSLY EXPENSIVE HD TV THAT DOESNT REALLY MAKE ANYTHING LOOK BETTER , ONLY WORDS , ,TEXT GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEAD , THE ONLY GOOD REASON FOR HD TVS IS THE FOOT BALL GAMES and movies , hence the reason every one is suddenly buying ps3s , ,-notice how most of the games barely pass a million on ps3 versus wii/360 , lol , and this is japan , , 360 aint selling there, so that above statement isnt true abot japan , only the wii and ps are selling and cod is not on this list so guess what , they aint interisted in your garbage-known as the hyped moder warfare they actually have my kind of taste- a variety! somthing us gamers and to an extent aus gamers lack ! and the only us console is obviously the stupid 360 ,buns down your house scratches your disc and the only good sellers are fps games lol
no silly skeleton just no never put graphics first, im sorry but , ive played more good games on wii n64 etc then on ps3 or 360 combined sadthin is i own 110 360 games tota rotflol ,an not even half are worth mentioning , and not even 90 percet of these are original , so you know what , wii was destined to selljust like ps1 and ps2, you know why they sell because they dont rely on graphics , and or online
Come on Japan, let's start rocking the HD gaming! Nintendo's never gonna step it up a notch if they keep doing so well with last-gen technology. Gameplay is king, but gameplay + great visuals = the whole damn royal family.
Nintendo the gaming giant! Wii isn't just for kids otherwise look at Samurai Warriors 3. Sin and Punishment 2 featuring on line play when it comes out. / Deathblow to all Sony fans
@ whatever strange comment blow-- no one ever said the PS3 price drop was going to magically going to kill the Wii in Japan. The trend week-to-week is still Wii sales ever-so-slowly declining. That's it. Likely market saturation being reached. No laughing or mocking. This week is obviously gets a bump from Mario, otherwise it'll go back to being pretty even. 930k first week sales on a more "casual player" console is impressive. Let's see how FF13 compares in 2 weeks.
wow is it me or didwii just sell double weeks worth of sales in one week again i knew ps3 lead was short lived , what 3 weeks and bam ps3 did not gain anything fro this ,
@capitalthoughts xbox fanboys said that the ps3 slim wont do anything, they also said after they sold half a million in japan ONLY that the price drop and slim is only a small "bump" is sales. but look at the sales now. the Wii is doing great i hope that they make more awesome games like RE
Why don't they ever release Gundam PSP games outside Japan!!!! I always have to buy imports and have to wait weeks!
I guess I would be in the minority here to wish for a New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the DS lol If there's any just person at Nintendo, they would make that a reality. Who's with me? :P
can anybody tell me what's so good about the mario games? i mean only by looking at mario at get bored
Where are all of those fanboys from the beginning of September when the PS3 had a price drop which moved it into first place and they were all saying that it was the end for Nintendo now? I recall people proclaiming that the PS3 was in the number 1 spot and it wouldn't move for the rest of this gen. Anyways, New Super Mario Bros Wii is a great game and a welcome edition in any true gamer's library.
@funsohng, Technically it's PSP 4, but you never know what someone might think. If you were trying to confuse people then good job, you fooled me for about 60 seconds.
@mariostar0001 i did mean phantasy star portable 2 sry, but i couldnt resist confusing other ppl :P and since when was PSP go PSP2?
@funsohng, I really hope you mean Phantasy Star Portable 2 and not Playstation Portable 2, that was the Go and it's already here.
The PSP sells over 67,000 units to come in second, and only 3,000 or so of those were PSP Go's. At least Japan knows what's good for them system wise. Also the DSi LL is not the worst thing ever, the problem with PSP Go is they charge you fifty dollars more for something that can do everything the PSP can except play UMD games, while the DSi LL can do everything the DSi can do, it's just bigger and $20 more expensive, finally matching the PSP regular price. At least the DSi LL isn't download only, that would be really bad.
Lies! Hardware dominance, once again, comes from the DS; combine the numbers of the three different versions of the system, and the DS sold more units than the Wii. You know, like always :)
this was the week for nintendo and its great to see samurai wariors 3 number 4 the game looks great hopefully it will be coming to N/A soon
