Square Enix role-playing game spin-off still on top as new Haruhi Suzumiya games and Steel Diver closing in.
Even with a few noteworthy releases for the week of May 9, the updated spin-off of Dragon Quest Monsters 2 Joker Professional still reigns supreme in Japan. Square Enix's expanded version of the monster collecting role-playing game retained its first place position with 20,722 units sold, according to the latest Media Create charts.
Two versions of the new game based on the Haruhi Suzumiya anime series, titled Haruhi Suzumiya no Tsuisou, have made strong debuts on the chart. The PS3 version of the game is in third place with 18,831 units sold, while the PSP version is in fourth place with 14,953 units sold. Roughly translated as The Reminiscences of Haruhi Suzumiya, the latest video game adaptation of the franchise takes place after the events of the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya anime, and players control main character Kyon and explore an alternate version of Haruhi Suzumiya's setting.
While Steel Diver has been released in the US, UK, and the rest of Asia, the submarine simulation game made its debut in Japan last week. The game is in third place with 17,408 units sold. Other notable games include PSP rhythm action game Patapon 3 in fifth place with 12,959 units sold and PSP RPG Final Promise Story in eighth place with 6,915 units sold.
The PSP and 3DS are still dominating the top two spots, with the former selling 34,655 units and the latter selling 18,324 units. Both systems' sales numbers have taken a dip since the previous week. For the week of May 2 to 8, the PSP sold 54,882 units, while the 3DS sold 29,149.

:O the japanese people sure are smart... the psp is the best selling handheld and the ps3 is the best selling console this week... i wish it was the same way over here so they would localize more games T.T
Hey guys , if you watched the anime you would have called the bunny is poor rather than the girl. It's pretty fun if you ask me.
Japan = PSP country. For a country that had the PSP line-up on the top and the bottom makes the other hardwares seem like they can't win or lose. If a hardware is successful in Japan, it's the PSP, if it fails in Japan, it's the PSP. Microsoft should be glad that the PS2, DS Lite, and PSP Go are still selling in Japan otherwise the Xbox 360 will be the one on the bottom (like it should be).
ok first of all , compare 3ds to ngp oh wait ngp not out is it , so ya nintendos currently winning that particular race and won this one as well sorry but its too late for psp now, they should have had these games not just in japan but in hte us , but the japan love the 3 portables as we can see the console market is hanging by thread with wii and ps3 getting support since day one , -but those are still low numbers for the 2 , , not good at all from where im sitting , seeing as 360 us sales thwomp ps3 , wii sitting 2nd , its a good gen overall but , i dont know what happened to sony , it seams they have got momentum to late in the race , and it just now showing it and its only psp getting the steam in japan , psp 3ds ds to be exact , , japans basically turned into a portable market --- nearly 100 k portables sold , those sayign oh 3ds got crushed -it may have got crushed in comparision to an older platform lets seee how ngp fairs at 350 a pop ,, im not to sure about that one , , better off getting a ps3 or waiting for the next gen wii , , cause we know it will also have the same kind of launch any ocnsole/hanbdheld gets and by that time 3ds will have its act together , -it took ds 6 months to take off , in comparision 3ds has sold more then ds did in less then 2 months
man home consoles have died off though as you can see portable units dominate japan 24k plus nintneod hardware handheld , 34k plus sony , bad week id say for the market as a whole but what can we say this gen has gone long enough and how would you compare the library of an established platform vs a new one is beyond me , we all know if we looked back at 2004 ,we be saying the same thing about dss weak library i didnt build my library over night, and compared to ds numbers in this same time frame 3ds is doing just fine if not better , plus we gotta remember the big games are coming soon , ds had at least 1 big game at launch 3ds has mostly new ips or old ips that hardly are recognized besides nintnedogs , , and ports of last last gen games , give the 3ds time, the psp has the japan because it has a good library over there, how about the united states-they still prefer 3ds and ds over psp , the point is , japan seams to get the better end of the stick when it comes to psp games, not good that people compare an older systems awsome game library to an established one lets compare psp library to ds library thats a more fair comparision and nothing holds a candle to it , the reason ds isnt selling as high ne more is litterally everyone has one , in japan which is a smaller market but they like i said have been sticking to the 3 handhelds -3ds ds psp then anything else as seen here
@papermun: That makes sense. Just from the first part of the anime that I've seen, she's a really cool character, and the series itself is very interesting. It's very well written. I might start reading the manga/novels....
@zzamaro GameSpot skipped Big in Japan for 2 weeks straight. 1st week- PSP- 77,228 3DS- 28,413 Last week- PSP- 55,140 3DS- 29.149 As you can see, 3DS got easily destroyed and the trends still continues. There's also no way 3DS stands a chance against God. @advocacy Haruhi is a visual novel so not much gameplay going on. @mariomaster16 The light novel is still going on in Japan. This game takes place after the movie that was shown in Japanese theatres a while back.
OK this is a good lesson for Nintendo for not releasing a Big first party game for 3DS, for PSP it's just awesome :)
It's weird that they're still making Haruhi Suzumiya games. It was a good show, but I thought it had been over for a while?
Nintendo may have sold alot of 3DS with the system launch at March, but the weak line-up of games is really hitting them if it is losing to the psp's librairy.
