Big in Japan May 17-23: Lost Planet 2

I'm surprised LP2 is doing so well over there, since it got kinda lack-luster reviews here which I why I've held off buying it.

The PS3 sells well in Japan because Japanese people are nationalistic and love animes. It has nothing to do with the actual hardware. Just so people realize this. I'm not saying this is bad, but people need to realize legitimate reasons for why certain systems sell better. In America the Xbox 360 sells better because the 2/3 of America believe it is a much more superior console to the PS3 not because of nationalism or fanboyism. When it was between the PS2 and the Xbox we picked the PS2 because that was the better system then.

Yeah... When the hell did Joker 2 come out? DQIX and DQVIDS aren't even out outside of Japan and they keep on coming. Supposedly, this kind of thing will continue until DB v. DQ III: The Cell and Zoma Wars comes out and we still haven't received DQX... -_-

Good to see some fresh titles on the top 10--those nintendo titles being best sellers for eternity is good for nintendo, but bad for everyone else in the industry since it shows stagnation. Playing Lost Planet 2 with Japanese players is quite fun, I get to work on my Japanese and they're a bit more mature than the standard 360 gamer.

@Yuck_Too I wouldn't of gone that far to generalize the Japanese gaming market being nothing more than 'silly' mobile games. Actually, its the US that now takes the cake with the iPhone and all of its apps via iTunes easily. (I believe there is a US article making that argument that the iTouch/Phone directly competes with the DS for top portable in the US marketplace). For myself, it's as if Apple is doing catchup now (and quite successfully and profitably as well) with the iPhone's technology. As it is one of not many new Western smart phones that can rival Japan's overwhelmingly superior cell phones (ie Docomo and SoftBank) in the past two years. @rayjapan It is true that (as you said) Canadians (relative to their population) invest a fair amount of money into video games is both impressive and symbolic. It shows that Canada, similar to the US, use this medium of entertainment as a more popular past time then some may think. Video games in Japan can cost anywhere between 6000-8000Yen(60-80USD) for new releases Western games can cost more at launch from time to time. The exchange rates get in the way a whole lot (Yen has been extremely strong due to the global recession). I'd say that (in order from most expensive to least), Japan, Canada, and USA. Cost of living in Japan (compared to US) annually is a 'few' dollars more (I can cook Japanese at home cheap) it's when you go out a lot it adds up easily. Foreigners (especially Westerners) here have the hardest time trying to save in Japan. In part due to lack of language/cultural knowledge and poor guidance.

Actually I should have been more specific...and you all sort of hit on it anyway. Per capita Canada is much MUCH larger...Canada also leads in HDTV / households and is right up there for both internet connection and speed. As for everything coming out of Japan setting the pace...I hope not...otherwise we'll be stuck with little else other then silly games on Mobile devices based on where they are doing the vast majority of their business.

@Yuck_Too [again] and Koushin BTW, Japan has 5 times the population of Canada. If Canadians spend more money on hardware/games than Japanese, then that isn't something to be proud of. :) Either they cost more in Canada or you play a lot more games per person...

@Yuck_Too To say "if Nintendo and Sony were not in Japan" is imagining another world. They started and first flourished in Japan because of the Japanese desire for games. Even now, many games are released only in Japan; they sell enough games to turn a profit without exporting (arguably, some of those games may not sell well outside of Japan). MGS, Final Fantasy, Super Mario, and many other franchises are Japanese and are released in Japan first. Isn't it interesting to find out how they do in their home countries before you spend your hard-earned dollar?

@Yuck_Too Hate to bust your bubble but not true whatsoever. In 2009, Canada did (in USD) 2.09 billion in sales while Japan did double with 5.9 billion in overall hardware/software sales. The three dominating markets are US, Japan, and Europe (in that order). While Canada is a valuable market to overall North American sales, it's value is succeeded by those three others I just mentioned. Canada tends to get weighed into the US gamer demographic of its customers as both have similar tastes in games and platforms. On the other hand, while Japan has been declining in sales this year, Canada has been increasingly doing better like the US has. But hey, maybe if two of the three console developers weren't Japanese they wouldn't have such a stronghold on the industry. But that is common sense anyway, right?

Canada buys more games then Japan...If Sony and Nintendo were not located in Japan no one would care about that market as far as consoles go.

@inaka_rob Granted technically the 360 and PS3 produce multiplatform games more or less in similar graphical quality (granted there are some exceptions), the PS3 definitely has a major sales lead on the 360 (an unstoppable one at that) in Japan. Microsoft is so desperate to sell games here that they have all these dual packs, bundles, and platinum games that haven't even reached the same status as they have in the West. These occasional jump in sales for the 360 (we see week to week) is really from the hardcore demographic in Japan that plays heavily and wants to experience all that gaming has to offer right now in this generation. (I'll admit Idol Master and Star Ocean 4 helped) I wouldn't call that an overall strong indicator of the current trend of Japanese gaming. LP2 is a good example of not only how people have very different opinions on the same game and how unique both markets are. Monster Hunter is a perfect example of this. MH3 on the Wii finally got higher review scores in the West and now it defines it as a rising series? While MH3's formula has stuck to its guns since the first release it now scores higher than its previous entries (I've been enjoying it for many years now) and enjoys Western critical popularity. Yet, the Wii's entry of the game feels just like all the other entries. Just goes to show you. Kinda inconsistent now isn't it? The only real judge in the end is you and your wallet. No matter where you live not the guy who posts his opinion of a game.

Amazing ... the PS2 out sells the PSP Go. I didn't think they were still making games for the PS2 .

PS2 out sells PSP Go? PSP Go got pwned by a mature console. Sony should rethink their products.

@inaka_rob Hey friend, I've lived in Japan for a while (but not the country side like you judging by your name I'm assuming you're in JET). I speak Japanese so it was rather easy to find gamers in areas like Kyobashi and Umeda (I live in Osaka) based on your area and language skill perhaps it isn't the same experience as it is for me. I feel the biggest trend here are portable platforms (DS and PSP). Anytime I go to Yodobashi Camera or "DenDen Town" I've seen plenty of people playing Monster Hunter 2ndG having meets with their friends (can't wait to see how MH3rd Portable does), any train you're bound to see a few ppl playing too (in the countryside that isn't possible though). Plenty of quality J-RPGs exist. It's just that they are on portables. Consider all the new Kingdom Heart games, Persona/Persona 3 remakes, Pokemon series, Phantasy Star Portable series, Dragon Quest IX, Subarashiki Kono Sekai, etc. One last thing, you mentioned was that JRPGs are the same as 10 years ago. Perhaps WRPGs have simply caught up with how popular JRPGs are in their home market. Although, WRPGs as a whole, while they are making some progress in Japan, aren't even close to rivaling the JRPG genre here in Japan. I'm interested friend, where in Japan you buy games from in the country side. A local vendor? GEO? Maybe even Book Off (they have used games there)? Please let me know via PM if you have time. @ lovewar777 : because they are all awful games. They haven't made a good one in about 5 years. J-rpgs are what got me truly into gaming. I think the genre is dying out, or should. It just can't evolve any further and if it can no one is doing anything about it. RPGs like Oblivion, Fall Out 3, and Mass effect series are the norm now. They took all the good things of the J-RPG and made them better. BUT J-RPGs still are still the same games they were 10 years ago. There are only so many battle engines you can dream up. Sure the graphics get better, but some of the best games EVER made were J-rpgs. Try topping the stories of FF7, Xenogears, Crono Trigger, FF3, Legend of Dragoon, etc, etc.

All being said and done, the 360 and ps3 are pretty much even (I own both and think the 360 is the clear winner though) The Japanese have a really strong bias towards the American made console. Just like we (Americans) did with cars 30 years ago.

I live in Japan and I have noticed a really weird trend in the games they buy over here. Japan absolutely loved the first lost planet I shouldn't be too surprised they love the 2nd one. They often jump on games we could consider awful. I don't know too many gamers my own age here (mostly students since I am a teacher) but they don't seem look at rating as much as we do. Then again most of the users on Gamespot seemed to shat on the COD map pack but it still sold more than any other downloadable content.

Both systems are great, but i disagree that the PS3 is THAAT awesome...

Super Mario Galaxy 2 will demolish Lost Planet 2. / xbox 360 is getting more popular in Japan. Same situation like the U.S, each console gamer buys more games than the ps3 or wii user.

Good thing that Lost Planet 2 is selling. Its an amazing game, shame its been so overlooked...

Hardware wise, in combined sales it's the DS that is the winner. 26145 units total.

I thought LP2 was a great game. A little frustrating at first with the campaign bosses but the multiplayer was awesome. Still don't know why they gave it bad reviews like that. =\

Which LP2 is PS3? And the game is awesome, dont trust all GameSpots reviews, most of them are just low becuz they probly couldnt beat the game.. Just like Monster Hunter :D. JK-ing, kinda.....

next weeks sales figures for Super Mario Galaxy 2 will probably dwarf the Lost Planet 2 sales in Japan

i remember useing a friends 360 and renting lost planet 1. i really liked it. and it was the first time i ever heard japanese people talk online. there was this girl on there and she was owning us all. couldnt understand her, but im sure she was trash talking lol

so ....lost planet 2 was rated 5.5 and its on the top of japane sales???? hèmmm maybe the rating was made a little in "fast and furious" and sony has the max and the min in hardware sales with the same system the psp// (go) ???? i dont have a psp go but is it realy so bad ? i think it looks cool and yet ps2 sold more than Go Oo
