Big in Japan March 5-11: Street Fighter X Tekken
New Capcom fighting game debuts just below One Piece and Project Diva 3DS titles; PS3 sales slowing down.
Even with plenty of new titles to choose from, gamers in Japan can't seem to get enough of the manga/anime franchise known as One Piece. The PlayStation 3 action game One Piece: Kaizoku Musou was still at the top spot of this week's Media Creates sales chart update. The game sold 745,907 units, beating out newcomers like 3DS rhythm game Hatsune Miku and Future Stars: Project Mirai, as well as recent 2D fighting game Street Fighter X Tekken.
Project Mirai came in second place with 86,676 units sold while the PS3 version of Capcom's fighting title debuted at third place with 58,471 units sold. The Xbox 360 version of Street Fighter X Tekken was at 14th place with 8,527 units sold. The game was recently praised for its deep fighting system, stylish visuals, and cast members. One Piece: Kaizoku Musou wasn't the only big earner for Namco Bandai this week. Kidou Senshi Gundam UC (or Mobile Suit Gundam UC) was just below Street Fighter X Tekken with 51,669 units sold. The mech action title covers the first three original video animations of the Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn series in gameplay form. The game also offers three different character routes with their own narrative points and a custom cast mode where players can form their own Gundam squad to use in missions.
The 3DS version of Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater also made its entrance this week, coming in at fifth place with 38,374 units sold. The sole PlayStation Vita title for the week, Unit 13, came in at 15th place with 8,089 units sold.
In terms of hardware, the PS3 surge petered out following the launch of One Piece: Kaizoku Musou. Sales units went from 65,116 to 34,816 for the console this week. The 3DS was still on top with 68,951 units sold, while the PS Vita was at fourth place with 10,041 units sold.
