Rerelease of last year's Birth by Sleep with international version's extras tops the chart with ease; Monster Hunter Portable 3, Donkey Kong Country Returns take second, third again.
It's not uncommon for a game to claim a spot atop Media Create's weekly Japanese sales charts more than once. It's a little bit more unusual for an entire year to pass between those stints as the country's reigning best seller.
However, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep has accomplished that feat, albeit with an asterisk. The Final Mix release of the Square Enix role-playing game (a Japanese release of the international edition of the game) topped the sales charts for the week of January 17-23, 2011, with 77,317 copies sold. The original version of Birth by Sleep posted back-to-back weeks as the Japanese best seller, claiming the title from January 4-17, 2010.
Square Enix's rerelease was trailed by a pair of 2010 releases that were able to hold their ground on the charts. Capcom's multiplayer action game Monster Hunter Portable 3 was a distant second for the week, selling 43,196. That was more than double the total of the third-place finisher, Donkey Kong Country for the Wii.
Beyond Birth by Sleep Final Mix, the only new releases for the week to make the top 10 were a pair of portable offerings from Namco Bandai. The publisher's giant monster action game Kaijuu Busters Powered for the DS took fourth place with 17,989 copies sold, while the PSP strategy game Venus & Braves rounded out the top 10 with 10,563 units sold.
Bolstered by a pair of games in the first and second spots for the week, Sony's PSP also topped the hardware chart for the week, with 35,636 systems sold. Although it lacked a top 10 representative on the software side, the PlayStation 3 took second in the hardware race with 23,792 new owners added to the user base. However, it wasn't all good news for the electronics giant, as the PSP Go struggled even more than usual for the week, selling just 198 systems.
As for Nintendo's hardware performance, the Wii came in third with 14,547 systems sold, while anticipation for next month's Japanese launch of the 3DS may be undercutting sales of Nintendo's existing portables. The DSi LL came in fourth place (11,720 sold), with the DSi (8,990 sold) taking fifth. The legacy DS Lite sold worse than the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 2, selling just 1,528 systems.

@lilrobda1 Yeah lol. It was a bad move. But i was saving for a new computer which i already have now. When i had the PS3 i barely played games on it. I was always on the internet browser or watching movies with the Netflix app lol. I'll buy another one next year. I'm in no rush. And yeah they look like DBZ characters because it's the same artist. His name's Akira Toriyama. Dragon Ball, Z and GT were my favorite anime shows ever. Pokemon was the first anime i watched. But last year in November i started collecting the DVD seasons of Yu Yu Hakusho. I know I'm late with the anime lol. But since i bought the first season, i knew i had to collect them all. The series in my opinion, is way better than DBZ. I thought to myself, "Why did i not get into this show years ago?" lol. It only has 112 episodes but it's still good to watch again. I'm surprised it didn't become big like DBZ. But no matter what YYH is still one of the top classic anime shows made. Oh i almost forgot, if you want to play DQ for the first time, try the one for the PS2. Journey of the Cursed King. If you like Kingdom Hearts you might like DQ VIII. Youtube is a good way to check out the game. But don't look too much because there will be spoilers.
@KingSora1991 That was a bad move selling the PS3 lol. I haven't played my PS2 in about 2 years because my controller didn't work. I wanted to play KH1 again, so the tutorials begins and the only thing I could do was jump, my analog sticks were done lol that sucked. My first pokemon game was gold and silver back in 3rd grade, then someone I knew found Red at the job they worked at so they gave it to me, only thing was that it kept restarting after I turned off the game, but I bought fire red when it came out. I never felt any emotion with KH1 or KH2 even after I replayed them more than 4 times each, but I did with BBS. I never played DQ, the only thing I ever thought about it was that they looked like characters from Dragonball Z lol.
@lilrobda1 The PS1 was my 3rd system i got. then the ps2. the PSP. After i sold the Wii i saved up money for the ps3. Then i sold that too lol. I regret doing that. I'll wait until Final Fantasy Versus XIII to come out. Then I'll get the Ps3 again. I still play the PS2. But not every day. Once in awhile. I never was interested in the newer Pokemon games. I'll give it a try if i can. I had Pokemon Red as my first video game. I was addicted to that game lol. I still play it sometimes lol.... Yeah Kingdom Hearts II was great. My favorite is Kingdom Hearts I and KH Birth By Sleep. Yeah i agree with u on that. It was a real emotional game. Only a tear? I cried lol. The same thing with the first KH. The second Kingdom Hearts i only had a tear lol. i know this is random but i wish they would make a new Dragon Quest game for a system like the Ps3. I never played the DQ games on DS but never caught my attention. DQ VIII Journey of the cursed King is one of my top 3 video games. One of the best games in my opinion
@KingSora1991 I started off with the Sega Genesis, then I got the PS1, after that it was the PS2 and Xbox, then the PS3. I started off with the GB Color, GBA, SP, DS, then I traded in my DS for a DS Lite because I wanted to play the new pokemon diamond, but of course I bought it for other games than pokemon. I guess it was after 2007 or 08 that I stopped playing both my DS and PSP, so they just collected dust until 2010 lol. My favorite KH game was KH2, then BBS came out, so that was my favorite. The commands were better than KH2, and the story was just more emotional than KH2, especially with Aqua. A tear nearly came out my eye lol.
@lilrobda1 I still have the Nintendo 64. I had a Wii but i sold it. I never played much with it. Gameboy Color was the first system i had. I got a DS Lite from a trade i made with a friend. But i never played much with it either. Yeah Kingdom Hearts is the only RPG i play too. lol yeah. I don't care how old I'll get. I'm still going to play Kingdom Hearts haha. Which is your favorite KH game?
@KingSora1991 Yeah, I'm a playstation guy also. The only thing I've owned from Nintendo are the handhelds. I get the main title games and watch walkthroughs of the side games. It's also a good way to save money lol. KH is the only RPG that I play. Depending on how many saga's KH has, I'll probably be in my 50's playing KH lol.
@lilrobda1 Yeah i know. The chances of changing the title is like 1% =/ But it's all good. But yeah about the 3DS, i was going to pre-order it but there's not enough games coming out with the system that are my type. I'm very picky lol. I'm more into KH that's why. And the NGP is a hand-held that I'll probably be getting before the 3DS. I'm more of a playstation guy. Yeah i haven't played my PSP since i beat the Birth By Sleep game... And same here. I usually get the main titles too. I used to have a DS Lite and had 358/2 Days but i wasn't that into it. It's a great game and good story but I'm not that crazy for DS games. The Re: Chain Of Memories for the PS2 i didn't bother getting. I just went on youtube and watched the cutscenes like most people did lol.
@KingSora1991 Well, that's the website, that's the only thing that Square is going to change and a little bit of the combat commands like they always do to improve the game, but not the title. Yeah, I was thinking of getting the 3DS, not only for KH3D, but since I always get the current handheld or system. I'm still 50/50 about buying it though since I only play certain handheld games. I haven't played my PSP in years until BBS came out, but I'm more leaning towards the NGP than 3DS even though Nomura says KH3D is a main title game, which I always get.
@lilrobda1 Maybe. Or maybe not. I know they have an official page for DREAM DROP DISTANCE, but it doesn't mean that they can't make changes. We can only wait til they give more info about this game. I was going to get the 3DS but i think I'll wait until KH 3D comes out lol :P
@lilrobda1 Of course it has a meaning. But i know there can be a better title. Hopefully they change it. If they won't then it's not really a big deal. The game is more important. And yes i agree. Nomura is definitely a genius!
@KingSora1991 The title may not sound good, but we all know it obviously has a meaning. Nomura is a genius.
PSP go sold only 198 systems. I'm glad that NGP (PSP 2) is not download only. Sony's move to use "modified" Memory SD cards, for games means that they can create games close to PS3 size. The download only experiment was worth seeing if Sony gamers would buy into it. Since the tech savy Japanese didn't like the PSP Go download only model. Glad the NGP uses physical media for games as well. Good move Sony.
Congrats to BBSFM. Wish it would come outside of Japan through, but I probably import it when it cheaper.
KH:BBS was an amazing game, they do throw out alot of KH games but this one is worth it, story was outstanding, and very well written.
and people like the psp better than the go because bigger screen, and being able to buy there games at the store and not having to dl it from the ps network where you need a credit card..psp go was dead in the water from day one.they promoted it terribly, and at a hundred dollars more than the psp why would you want to buy it?
the reason why psp sells better than Go is of 2 reasons: 1) people are more comfortable playing in UMD 2) can easy be made into customfirmware and play for free
I'm glad to see Sony's making a profit in Japan with they're PSP, they sure aren't here in North America... not that I'm a Sony fan, but it's good to see the systems getting sales. It's always sad to see a company waste money on something that doesn't sell.
@lilrobda1 Exactly. Kingdom Hearts is one of the reasons why I still play video games. I can't wait for the new Kingdom Hearts 3DS Dream Drop Distance to be released. The title is not that great but I'm very positive that it will be successful.
When Square is good its good, but they also have to contend with the horrid example that FFXIV has set for its MMO standards. That being said, they are killing with their upcoming games. Just now they have FFXIII-2, FFType 0, FFvsXIII, Dissidia 012, and a few more still coming out. This is going to be a good year for fans of Square, considering that they release all of said games in this year.
Birth by Sleep has to me my favorite PSP game, so I'm glad it's doing so well. I agree that the PSPgo needs to be discontinued already.
@DennisWZH People do that? I've heard of people waiting for the GOTY edition, but never buying both... within a few months of each other. Geez, consumers can be a bit ridiculous sometimes.
@beny_pimpster Only in japan. And why should you care if te 360 does well or not, don't have more important things to care about?
The 360 sales in Japan have always been sorta low but I think that's because the 360 appeals to people who like shooters like the other consoles have more of a variety of games
@KingSora1991 Yes, I agree. KH is my favorite game as well. This game is on another level from other games.
Birth By Sleep is the best PSP game I've played lol. May sound stupid to some people but my favorite game series is Kingdom Hearts :)
Hooray for KHBBSFM being on top. lol PSP Go seriously just needs to be discontinued at this point with those sales. No one is buying it, especially with the NGP being right around the corner.
@Raykuza: the same reason why western people buy the first game even though they know they're gonna get a GOTY edition sometime later
