Big in Japan Feb. 28 - March 6: Final Fantasy Dissidia
Square Enix's PSP fighting game sequel cruises to top spot on sales charts, 3DS retains hold atop hardware sales chart with more than 200,000 units sold in second week.
During the 3DS's launch week in Japan, the glasses-free 3D handheld easily topped the hardware sales charts, but found its best-selling title peaking at third place, behind a pair of newly released games for Sony's systems. Japanese tracking firm Media Create today released its sales data for the 3DS's second week on sale, and the story was much the same.
For the week of February 28 to March 6, the 3DS sold 209,623 systems, well ahead of the second place PSP's 76,246 total. However, the best-selling 3DS game was Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle, which took third place on the charts for the second week in a row with 59,138 sold. Similarly, 3DS titles Nintendogs + Cats and Samurai Warriors Chronicles retained their fifth-place and eighth-place spots, respectively.
The week's best-selling game by a wide margin was Dissidia 012: Duodecim Final Fantasy. The sequel to 2009's fighting game spin-off of the Square Enix role-playing game franchise sold 286,117 copies in its debut week. That was more than four times the total of the second-best-selling title, Spike's action game Way of the Samurai 4.
