Capcom's PSP action game retains top spot as Studio Ghibli-Level Five collaboration Ninokuni, Donkey Kong Country Returns spar for second.
Along with the flagging rhythm genre, slumping sales of Wii games and portable titles have been blamed for the US game industry's 2010 woes. However, the picture in Japan is considerably different. Media Create released its Japanese sales figures for the week of December 6-12, and games for the PSP, DS, and Wii claimed eight of the top 10 chart spots.
Monster Hunter Portable 3 dominated in its second week of release, adding 629,541 copies to its first-week total of 1.95 million copies sold. Capcom's multiplayer-focused action game far outsold the closest competition, with the Studio Ghibli-Level Five collaboration Ninokuni: Shikkoku no Madoushi selling 179,548 copies in its week of release. The DS role-playing game narrowly beat out Wii platformer Donkey Kong Country Returns, which led Nintendo's offerings with 163,310 copies sold.
Nintendo had a strong week on the whole. In addition to Donkey Kong Country Returns, the company claimed the middle of the charts with Pokemon Black and White, Mario Sports Mix, Wii Party, Super Mario All-Stars, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem in fourth through eighth place, respectively. The final two spots were occupied by the PlayStation 3's only two representatives on the chart, Namco Bandai's Tales of Graces F and Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.
On the hardware front, the PSP easily claimed the top spot with a boost from the Monster Hunter Portable 3 launch, even if the 158,029 systems it sold was less than half the previous week's total. The Wii retained second place with 79,424 systems sold, while the DSi and DSi LL (DSi XL in the West) leapfrogged the PS3 to take third and fourth place. Finally, after an extended breather in the middle of the pack, the PSP Go returned to the bottom of the charts, selling just 1,904 systems.

Japan lucky to have Monster Hunter. That game is pure skill. I see alot of gamers trash talk the series but they just don't get it. Why is Monster Hunter so popular in japan. Its a social game. young and old can play it at their own pace. Its all about helping each other and having fun. Many gamers can't even play single player games. They only play multiplayer. So that type of gamer is casual. Monster Hunter has solo play too. gamers that love to brag on themselves and have a short attention span, Will always and forever hate anything they are not good at. Millions of japanese gamers love this game. And I'm supose to believe a couple of village idiots!!!???!! So when i read any blogg stating negative comments about Monster Hunter. It just shows me that not everyone is a true gamer. Monster Hunter Fans are the smartest gamers out there. The game is too hard for the weak minded. It tailored for you to discover fighting tactics and items for use while hunting. Too many games spoon feed you on what to do. Monster Hunter doesn't. Someone would have 3 games in thier collection and all of a sudden they think "I'm the worlds best gamer and I know the truth about whats good and bad with games. If i hate a game, guess what? I don't play it or comment on it. I move onto the next.
This game OWNS!! I've spent more hours on Monster Hunter than all GoW games combined. I haven't played Ghost of Sparta yet though.
I agree w/ itsTolkien_time. Japanese gamers/consumers are the most eccentric out there. And that isn't exactly a compliment. It's almost like the "tackier and sillier" the better. Monster Hunter really?!
Dang, Japan still swallows up Monster Hunter like it's some sort of godly ambrosia. I guess I will never understand why this happens for every release. And handhelds fly of the shelves. Over 129,000 DSs and almost 160,000 PSPs. Compare that to the less than 127,000 home consoles sold that week. Handhelds double that and more!
maaan i wish they included dual wielding in MH Tri. Hopefully in the next console addition... or possibly if they get one for the 3DS.
@OGKNav i hear yeah! the MH games are awsome and who cares where the game was made if its good then play it. Like MH.
I'm glad Monster Hunter has been getting the respect it deserves SOMEWHERE on earth, for the past few years. Western gamers are so biased now-a-days, it's not even funny anymore.
@ wiisdual ,, ,a survey does not mean nothing , so what if they think its too expensive, but what about apples ipod and ipad , arent those more expensive fact is 3ds will be the newest handheld on the market when it comes out no competition will be there, and japan will buy it why cause it is nintendo and 300 is not that expensive if it was boy why is ps3 selling , huh oh wait it fell to 5th place this week , but it was doing good til now , point is, 300 is not as expensive as 2000-3000 - the price of 3d tvs plus a 30 0 ps3 , and its glasses free to so ya i dont call that expensive
Checked nintendolife and they said Mario Party 2 will come this Monday for NA and Friday for Europeans. HURRAY. Buy your cards and start a party of 4.
NIce. A survey revealed that Japanese gamer's think that 3DS is way too expensive and only half know of it. Probably the reason of that is here / 3DS may not sell well in Japan. 150,000 and 300,000 in the one of the past weeks.
@Oldboy08 It depends on how big the game is. Usually big titles (Uncharted, Killzone, LBP) are localized here in Japan. If it's something more specific that would only service Western gamers, you may want to import it or find an import game shop since PS3 is region free. I personally only buy the AAA Western games. :)
i hope when im in Japan, they still release all the western games, because 2011 is gonna be a huge year for PS3 gaming and im not sure how many will come to Japan, im hoping all of them...:D
@SolidTy And it's in its second week. Don't forget the first week MHP3 was released in Japan in sold over 1.95million!
I'm amazed at Pokemon Black and White. It's sold almost 5 million, in JAPAN ALONE! That's almost 4% of the population. I can't imagine how much it will sell when it hits our shores.... it looks . The PSP performs way better in Japan than here. The Japanese like quick, enaging gaming, while Americans like huge, cinematic games. AKA consoles.
Its great to Donkey kong country returns sell well, that games a masterpiece! Damn black and white is STILL selling? cant blame them, it IS pokemon and it IS japan
