Slow week at retail sees not a single debut crack Media Create's top 10; Nintendo's platformer leads software, PSP tops hardware.
The first full week of April offered very little for US gamers at retail. As it turns out, the case was similar in Japan, a fact reflected in Media Create's sales chart for the week of April 5-11. With not a single new game cracking the top 10, Nintendo's perennial chart-topper, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, was free to take top billing on the week, selling 37,244 units.
Nipping at the heels of another strong performance by Koei's Fist of the North Star Warriors for the PlayStation 3 (34,262 units), Konami's Pro Baseball Spirits 2010 showed some staying power. The PSP and PS3 editions of the game posted third- and fourth-place performances (31,127 units and 30,624 units, respectively), though the PlayStation 2 edition failed to make a repeat appearance in the top 10. Tomodachi Collection for the DS rounded out the top five, selling 22,563 units on the DS.
The back half of Media Create's weekly chart was populated by a number of usual suspects, including the latest Pokemon Ranger, Wii Fit Plus, and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. Etrian Odyssey III and Yakuza 4 also maintained positions in the top 10.
Sony led both handheld and console hardware during the week, with the PSP selling 29,766 units and the PS3 shifting 28,973 systems. Of course, it also finished at the bottom of the handheld and console chart, since the PSP Go and PlayStation 2 sold just 1,826 units and 1,425 units, respectively. Nintendo's Wii sold 25,345 units, and the DS trifecta combined for sales of 36,459 units. The Xbox 360 once again languished near the bottom of the chart, selling 3,218 units.

Awesome! NSMB wii was a blast. An old school Mario game pure and simple. This is one title I would love a sequel for. Not too surprised that Final Fantasy XIII isn't on there as the game was released in December over there and the majority of people who wanted the game got it. I believe FF is bigger in the states than in Japan, remember Dragon Quest is the big Square Enix franchise over there with people taking the day off and Japan treating it's release as like a national holiday.
Somewhat agree with vader501st, though I cant blame them for being skeptical of the 360 with reliability issues, they did the same thing with the first xbox which showed that they were sticking to their own
Glad to see the PS3 heading the charts. But... isn't Mario just at the top because no other big title games are out right now? The picture caption is right.%Pr
New Super Mario Bros Wii sucks, it's nothing new!!! I mean cmon couldn't Nintendo do something new to add to this bulls*it... It shouldn't be on the top.... So many games are way better... And yes about the PSP it's the natural place for such an outstanding platform
New Super Mario Bros Wii was my biggest disapointment of 2009. $100AU for a short low production platformer that recycles so many ideas from previous Mario games. Nintendo should have just wacked the entrie catalogue of previous Mario Bros. game on a Wii disc instead.
For all those b****ing about the japanese not buying western games look at 3 & 4 on the list. They may not be made by americans but it's a purely american sport made famous purely for the fact it's american.
Comforting to see the 360 near the bottom of the hardware sales list. Just another normal week in Japan.
vader501st, I just noticed that. They don't buy Western games. Why should we but their games, we should be buying Halo's and many 360's.
Why in the hell is the PSP at the top of the Japanese hardware chart? Have they all just exceeded their DS limit and moved on to something different?
Someone needs to introduce those xenophobes to GOOD games. Give a chance to European/American games, retards.
@ PumpkinBoogie Spoil my observation? Hardly. FF 13 was touted as one of the biggest games for the PS3, a system seller. 4 months later and it's not even outselling the Wii Fit Plus? In case you didn't know, FF13 sells for about 15 dollars now in Japan, when it initially retailed for about 100 dollars. Low demand, high supply on what was an overrated game. You stand corrected. I was always talking about Japan.
nice numbers :) although it was a very weak week. I'm glad that the PSP sells good at least in one region :) and the same for the PS3 :D and please stop combining the sales of all DS's just to make it the winner in the chart ;) it is this way in japan, if you want combine sales, watch NPD group reports :) and for those that are asking themself where is FF XIII, this is Japan, the game came out on the end of December, more then 4 months ago so it's natural not to see it anymore, it isn't Mario who sells always :P
@ Axelander999 Gameboy Color, Advance and SP were not different versions of the same handheld. They were different evolutions of the Gameboy franchise.
@ sergioalb64 Apparently you can't add. PSP - 29,766 DSiLL - 19,372. 29,766 is a bigger number. also a bigger number than the DSi - 13,738. And than the DS Lite - 3,349. Considering the fact that the DSi LL, DSi and DS Lite are all DIFFERENT hardware, Gamespot got it right.
Go Sony! Making up ground in Japan, maybe the move will finally put the nail in sorry arse Nintendo's coffin. I hate Nintendo.
@nitzan_z It doesn't suprise me... Nintendo is already notorius for having like 10 versions of the same handhelds. For example, there is the original Gameboy, the Play it Loud Gameboy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Light, Gameboy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP, Game Boy Advance SP "Mark II" and Game Boy Advance Micro.
I didn't know Etrian Odyssey III had come out already. Something to look forward to when it gets localized here in America.
hokuto musou can be sure a stupid koei game but i import the treasure box edition.. i just cant resist kenshiro's atatatatatatata wacha!!
@teknicz, Well I'd hate to spoil your observation...but might I point out to you that this is the Japan chart topping numbers and not the US (or worldwide). And in case you didn't know, Japan has had FF13 out since December 2009--so it would make perfect sense if they didn't have FF13 up there anymore as it has been quite a few months of time distance between when they released it and when the rest of the world got it. @kris9031998, hey I'm just actually more psyched, and surprised, that it didn't take them over 2 yrs--like w/ Yakuza 2--to localize and get it out over here, lol. I know I'll probably end up importing the 4th one sometime this year, too, but at least there's hope maybe by next year around this time we might see the Yakuza 4. :)
Still weird how Yakuza 4 comes out in Japan while Yakuza 3 comes out in america at around the same time.
Nintendo hasn't released Metroid and SMG2. The first Metroid sold well in Japan, so it was smart for Nintendo to have controls like the NES game. Perhaps it will sell more than 2 million
I've been on the fence about getting a Wii, but games like this one are really pushing me towards a purchase. I am not really into the motion stuff, but Nintendo's first party stuff is always solid. It's either spend the 200.00 and grab a Wii, or buy a few 360/PS3 games. What to do?
Didn't take very long for FF13 to completely disappear off the charts. Sorry, all you FF fanboys/girls, the game isn't what was expected.
28 973 25 345 03, 6 2 8 thats ps3s lead over wii this week down from 10 plus thousand last week so ya i say ps3 hit a peak and ff 13 is absent this week how odd, usually that game tops the chart forl ong time
wow ps3 declined this week wii stable and ds out sells psp again dont let these numbers fool ya all 3 ds outsell both psp combined
When is Fist of the North Star and Etrian Odyssey III coming over here? I know they will sell horribly but I still want them.
mathematics fail ( all ds sold more than all psp versions ) , don't worry it happens on the IGN too but anyway seems like everyone already have an Wii there so they have to give a chance for another console
This makes it, I believe, the seventh time that New Super Mario Bros. Wii has held to the #1 spot in the software chart. It may have its eighth next week, as I do not expect either version of No More Heroes Paradise to chart to the top. The software calm before the Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker storm at the end of April, but Mario will weather it out in the end.
