Square Enix's critter-capture RPG outsells Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker during both games' debut week; PSP cruises into top hardware slot.
In Japan, there are few games that can trump the popularity of Konami and Kojima Productions' Metal Gear franchise. As it would turn out, Square Enix's Dragon Quest franchise happens to be one of them. Media Create reports this week that Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 for the DS debuted atop its sales charts for the week of April 26-May 2 with 623,643 units sold. That tally gave it a wide margin over Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker's still-substantial 434,366 unit performance.
The other top debut in Japan this week was Capcom's Super Street Fighter IV. An expanded edition of 2009's hit fighter, Super Street Fighter IV on the PlayStation 3 finished third on Media Create's chart with 80,882 units while the Xbox 360 version sold an additional 28,454 copies. Sandwiched between the two versions of Capcom's fighter, and rounding out the top five, was Nintendo's stalwart platformer New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which sold 44,593 units.
Takara Tomy's mouthful Katekyoo Hitman Reborn! DS Fate of Heat III - Yuki no Shugosha Raishuu! represented the final debut of the week, selling 24,050 units to secure an eighth-place finish. The game just outpaced last week's top performer, Nier Replicant on the PS3, which fell to ninth after selling just 20,889 units in its second week.
Peace Walker may not have been the top performer, but it appears to have lifted PSP sales to 59,315 units. The PS3's 32,874-unit haul managed to just outdo the Wii's 30,757 tally, while the DSi LL and DSi combined to sell 41,197 units. The Xbox 360 gained a slot on the chart, finishing just above the DS Lite with 4,943 units sold.

@guichan; LOL! I can't do anything but laugh at your comment. Thanks, made my day. Some people just love to be ignorant.
Well, I supposed Japanese are more eager about 3DS that some of them stop buying DS to wait for 3DS. Still, I don't like DQ MJ. :(
I wonder what kind of idiot buy's a psp since there is a good release once a three mounths or so , I wonder what happened about some sort of project of Metal Gear for Ds , I wonder how many projects have been cancelled for those portable systems
The numbers for the PS3 are looking good and the numbers for Super Street Fighter IV are looking good as well. Keep up the good work you guys..
OK so the PSP has been topping the hardware charts in Japan consistently this year but still, selling 600,000+ copies of a DS game and still not topping the hardware charts. Well, it's good to see Metal Gear doing well. That means more money to Kojima to make more awesome games. I'm curious about that taboo game of his.
I have the first DGM, and it's a decent game, but I honestly don't feel that it deserves a sequel, and I have no real drive to buy and play another one on the DS. I hope it does not come stateside.
wow wii and ps3 gained this week , as did psp , its clear that wii will lead throughout this gen though
@ jb9776. japan is 3rd place behind the UK and USA, you know why? they are to stuck in their ways and think if they shun a system. it will fail everywhere. why isnt there a UK sales chart posted?
@monson21502 the reason they post the japanese numbers is because, contrary to popular beliefs, japan is a hotbed for video games. alot of american video game players don't think so but these numbers are as important as the american ones. the real question is if you're not interested in the japanese sales figures, then why do you post on the stories about them.
SSF IV at 3rd place only sold 80 thousand? Is that normal sales numbers? Does America sell this little this time of year? Anyone know?
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 has seldom chance of coming to the US because it was a commercial failure.
Wow! Game sales really show how much dominance portable handhelds have over home consoles. Which is a big reason I think as to why MS is getting stomped so badly in the east.
Good to see Sony leading the packs with the PSP and PS3. Still waiting for Birth By Sleep here in America though. SE, both the bane of my exsistance and the love of my life.
@taxonomic, , why you think nintendo is doing so well? japanese gamers love recycled junk. just look at the ds and wii.... all nintendo has to do is release a new color and they rush out and buy them like they are collecting pokemon.
"taxonomic Posted May 7, 2010 8:11 pm GMT Dragon Quest in Japan is like STAR WARS/Halo in America. Just slap the name on any piece of old recycled game garbage and you instantly sell a few million." FIXED!!
Dragon Quest in Japan is like Final Fantasy in America. Just slap the name on any piece of old recycled game garbage and you instantly sell a few million.
why doesnt gamespot dig up the numbers game sales from wal-mart and other stores that dont count in the npd usa sales. instead of showing us japan charts every week?
