Capcom's action role-playing game tops software sales charts, helps breathe life into Wii hardware sales--but not enough to beat Sony's portable.
While many have lamented the softening Wii market in Japan--Nintendo president Satoru Iwata among them--the console was bolstered last week by the release of Capcom's Monster Hunter G. Although just an appetizer to the Wii debut of Monster Hunter 3, the port of the 2005 hit PlayStation 2 title was sufficiently intriguing to draw first-week sales of 132,000.
The game also helped push hardware sales, as the Wii followed the previous week's sales of 13,200 with a stronger showing of 18,400 systems sold. Regardless, that's still far from the dominant position the console holds in North America, as the Wii was only the fourth-best-selling hardware for the week, yet again falling behind the resurgent PlayStation 3, which had 23,400 units sold.
Sony's PSP topped all platforms with 41,200 systems sold. It also sported the most games in the top 10 with three: Zettai Zetsumei Toshi 3, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, and BASARA Battle Heroes. The Wii, DS, and Xbox 360 each had two games in the top 10, with the PlayStation 3's only chart appearance coming in the form of Killzone 2 at the third spot with 41,000 units.
Week of April 20-April 26, 2009
1) Monster Hunter G (Wii) - 132,000
2) Pokemon Fushigi no Dungeon (DS) - 54,400
3) Killzone 2 (PS3) - 41,000
4) Zettai Zetsumei Toshi 3 (PSP) - 31,000
5) Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (PSP) - 23,000
6) Death Smiles (360) - 20,000
7) BASARA Battle Heroes (PSP) - 17,000
8) Mario & Luigi RPG 3 (DS) - 17,000
9) Wii Fit (Wii) - 11,000
10) HAWX (360) - 10,000
Xbox 360 7,000
DS Lite 6,400
It's not that all of "Monster Hunter" succeeds. "Monster Hunter" of the console version is minor. MH However, in PSP, it sells in large numbers. A four-person play and all the Qwest of a PSP version are free. However, all the Qwest can't be played in the stand-alone of a console version. In order to carry out all Qwest and cooperation plays, you have to charge online. The reason which the PSP version has hit is there. Therefore, MH3 does not exceed the number of MHP2G. MHP3 has a possibility of exceeding 3 million.
Monster Hunter Is a social game. I love playing solo. With more players you have more fun helping each other. Capcom stated they releasing Monster Hunter Freedom Unite Demo June 1st on Playstation network. Give it a try!!!!
i dont get why monster hunter freedom unite rocks over there.. i was hoping dissidia would be on the "big in japan" list.. owell, psp rocks! hehe
@ BC20FLY yh im suprised, its rare to see an fps that high in the japanese charts......its always rpg's maybe a price drop? game are selling it for £26 in the UK.....used to be £40
PS3 is double the price of PSP and yet it has over half the sales of PSP. their both doing very good and this is how its gonna be soon in the US and EUR once the flurry of exclusives comes along. the japs would buy the wii and PSP even if the only game on it was monster hunter lol.
kavadias, your wrong the main reasons ds gta didnt make top ten is because the olld style graphics and what not the reason for madworld , is black and white of all things sure looks good but actaully playing it and paying 49 for it its not worth it core titles can sell on wii-mario galaxy mario kart , bully cod5 resident evil , etc the new titls like madworld and no more heroes need more advertising , more effort and campaignes to get going look at haze , on ps3 , good example of a game that could have been good and sold well but did not because of no advertising and rushed work also its better to release madworld in color not black and white had they done that im sure it would got a few thousand more units in that said the developers where happy with its sales , for what they were lets not remember it doesnt take alot of units to sell on wii to make a profit thats the key thing-profit not overall sales, sure in a fanboys eyes these days that matters buit to the gamer/company in the end im afraid its just the money even 360s games show , how stale and easy they can be to complete and some dont sell to good-godfather etc no shame , if developers gave up on wii hardcore field , then youd complain more so i say no just no i dont want to hear it , have fun playing games and stop worrying about salees already we know whos gonna win already, japan doesnt decide it , world wide does, and guess what the wii in the us is doing 3 -4 x better then any other console so why the heck is any one worried about one console failing sony and nintendo at least has the dough to continue to make consoles in fact guess what even if sony gains first place which i highly doubt it , the wii in the end wins, it has the most profits it has the overall library for a collector much like myself , it does have alot of charms even if these charms go uknoticed- look at okami top gear snes, etc these games are rare today because well their hardly any produced but that did not stop them from being a charm and playable
Did Killzone 2 just increase from 20,000 to 41,000 in JAPAN!!? No wonder im seeing more japanese gamers on killzone 2 when I log in
monster hunter portable 2G AKA freedom unite is still selling in japan lolz....... heard it sold around 3.5 mil in japan alone already... o.O
Finally Nintendo published good games and the result was that it beat Sony. I've been waiting for a long time the release for Mario and Luigi: RPG 3 and if the reviews and score is great, then I will most likely buy the game. I think this game will be a great hit and I hope it has online play. Haven't heard of the game Monster Hunter G. Japanese people are very different from Americans in gaming.
If you are going to post sales for other countries/regions then you best starting posting Europe numbers too. I'm much more interested in that then Japan.
2008 and 2009 are all in tune with the PS3, imo. We've been hearing only good news from Sony - PS3 AND PSP. Except for those couple of disturbing things: 360-exclusive DLC for GTAIV and Fallout 3. But I think the immense number of killer-apps, AAAs that are exclusive to the PS3 make up for that, to name some exclusives: (maybe not all AAA) KZII, UNCHARTEDI&II, GOWIII, MGS4, LBP, RESISTANCEI&II, MOTORSTORMI&II, RATCHET AND CLANK and FINAL FANTASY XIII VERSUS.
Noctis7 Posted May 2, 2009 6:14 am GMT -12 That is the 9th or 10th week in a row the PS3 is leading the console sales. I guess this will only continue with FFXIII coming. *************************************************************** I think it's only been like 5 weeks. And it has slowly started to drop every week after that. If it wasn't for the FF XIII demo that got released, the PS3 would be below the Wii in sales right now. Nintendo has a slew of must have titles coming out at the end of the year, so it should be interesting to see how the Sony stacks up in Japan at that time.
Right! I have never seen "Chinatown Wars" in Japan Top 10 sales chart. Might be I miss it out. Actually, I am not aimed at Wii users and Nintendo, but Capcom. It seems that Capcom is being grasping start from this year, see the SF4 & RE5 download contents. And Now MHG w/MH3 demo.
Good to see PS3 is finally showing that Wiik console who's boss. To imagine that not even Monster Hunster could hel........ oh what's this? Another PS2 port with tacked-on controls? no wonder why. At least the PSP and DS are still duking it out on the Top 10 weekly.
@iamamanami Exactly. Look what happened to Chinatown Wars and Madworld. 150 million owners between the Wii and DS and both games get appalling sales. Companys would be wise to release core games on the 360, PS3 and PC but leave the casual games for the Wii and DS. Better sales all round that way.
Unite cannot come over here fast enough. Hurry up capcom!!! And on a side note, surprisingly good sales for MH G, sold almost double madworld sales in one week (Madworld's been out for like a month, right?)
One more thing, even though MH3 will be released on Wii, its first week sales will not outsell some Nintendo games, like Mario Kart. You should know the reason.
@Loucetios When sales begin to slow manufactures have 2 options. (1) Provide AAA-titles that sell systems (2) Lower the price of the console. So, unless Nintendo has some really exciting software lined up for this year, they are going to have to lower the price in Japan in order to keep things moving forward and stay ahead. _
It's true that Wii has the highest no. of owners, and Capcom thinks this is a right move. 132K / 8000K = 1.65% Less than 2% Wii owners bought MHG in 1st week. Who plays MHG? Kids? Elders? Ladies? Who owns Wii? Kids? Elders? Ladies? Kids play MHG? Yes, but not many. Elders play MHG? No, at least I don't think so. Ladies play MHG? Yes, but not many. Kids buy MHG? No money. Then, how many parents will buy MHG for their Kids? Ladies buy MHG? Not many many. Most of them are not core gamers and MHG customers, they won't buy or play it. According to 1st week sales, it tells us less than 1.65% of Wii owners are core gamers. If this game is ported to PS3 & 360, the total number of sales must be larger than that of Wii. The logical sense of marketing is not depending on how many owners of that console, but the one who buy/play the game.
SalarianChemist yea cause 7,000 a week is very impressive, and lets not forget that one million milestone took nearly four years, thats not that impressive Btw the Wii doesn't need a price cut in Japan, if that was true the Playstation 3 would be the worst selling system and the Playstation 2 the best considering they are the most expensive & cheapest consoles respectfully
That is the 9th or 10th week in a row the PS3 is leading the console sales. I guess this will only continue with FFXIII coming.
PS3 needs more JRPG's in the States. I know it's sorta off-topic, just thought i'd throw it out there.
psp has been doing very well lately. now let's pray that the third-party game-publisher wouldn't have cold feet (DMC PSP still sulky about it) or decide to change their mind (Ghostbusters) with their awesome (and some impossible to believe) lineups (still have a hard time beleiving tekken 6, Dante's Inferno & assassin Creedare coming to psp)
iamamanami> I respect your logical thinking on the matter. But the MH series has always had its main following in Japan and just a few fans abroad. As you also probally know MHG is just a re-release for an old PS2 slightly improved with some small gameplay fixes. Also, it includes the Wii Classic Controller and MH3 demo (main reason people went to buy it). Also considering the overwhelming amount of Wii owners in Japan you can see why they made this decision. They decided to go with the largest console owning base for potentially earning maximum profits. Last but not least 130k is not bad for a week's worth of copies sold considering once again this is just a remake of an old PS2 game.
MHG on Wii? It's a joke, Capcom. Most of the core users are PS3/360 owners rather than Wii owners. Capcom, you should pay more attention to marketing before you decide the platform. 130K is just a small number for this game.
Wii sales have declined to their all-time low in Japan. It's time for a Wii price drop in Japan. These numbers are all "relative" so they appear evenly matched, but that is actually not the case. These numbers are very low compared to the history of what sales used to be in Japan. The PS3 is ranked number three here, and sales of 23,000 units are not impressive under normal conditions. But, in a worldwide recession like this, it is actually pretty good. The Xbox 360 is actually putting up some impressive numbers in Japan. Reaching the 1 Million sold milestone in Japan was something that nobody would have thought possible for an American console five years ago. But Xbox 360 has achieved revolutionary success in Japan, and they should be congratulated for that. The next console with an Xbox name in Japan is going to have a solid brand name to build on, just like Xbox 360 did in North America and Europe.
yay the psp is on the rise again!!!!! this is the ps3 and psp's year... with sooooooo many exclusives and stuff so come onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn sony SHOW EM WHO'S THE LEADER!!!
I think we're being left out. The software lineup of Sony in Japan is actually good, and I'm a PSP and a PS3 owner.
wow - PSP is kicking butt in Japan. Why can't they port that stuff over to the States? (WITH Infrastructure MODES, not just Ad-Hoc crap)
With all the amazing exclusives the PS3 has lined up for this year, the PS3 could actually start to come up in the US too. All Sony needs is a price drop. I have a strange feeling that we will hear a price drop announcement at E3 or not too long after. It sucks that the PSP gets so many good games in Japan. Well, it doesn't suck because that keeps publishers interested in the device. I'm hoping the PSP2 sees a lot more effort put towards it from publishers in the way of exclusives, unique PS3>PSP connectivity options within the games, Infrastructure mode-enabled games, original IPs, prequels, and sequels (to name a few things). Still have to give it up for the PS2 for continuing to sell as much as it does. It's really going to make it to the 10 year mark. Now that's something that builds consumer loyalty when a company actually follows through like that. _
