What we heard: About this time last year, Ubisoft revealed as part of its Ubidays press event that it was at work on a follow-up to Michel Ancel's celebrated 2003 action adventure Beyond Good & Evil. However, aside from a brief trailer (bottom) that appeared to show protagonist Jade and her humanoid pig companion Pey'j stranded along the side of a road, no actual gameplay footage, details, platforms, or release window were revealed.
With the Electronic Entertainment Expo now less than a month away, it appears as if Ubisoft is finally gearing up to offer new details on the cult action-adventure game. Today, a video that looks to be gameplay footage of Beyond Good & Evil 2 made its way onto a number of video-sharing Web sites, including YouTube.
Highly reminiscent of Ubisoft's recent hit Assassin's Creed, the footage shows Jade fleeing from machine-gun-wielding foes through what appears to be an arid city from the first game. Jade is shown leaping from rooftops, ascending walls, and engaging in other parkour-inspired activities in her attempts to evade capture or death. The brief clip concludes with Jade hopping into a flying machine and then cruising away with her assailants in hot pursuit.
The official story: Ubisoft had not returned requests for comment as of press time.
Bogus or not bogus?: Though the footage contains no identifying logos or other marks that one would expect to see attached to an official trailer, its high production values are making this one look not bogus.
However, if this footage does turn out to be Beyond Good & Evil 2, Ubisoft isn't necessarily close to bringing the game to market. Notably, in laying out its projections for its current fiscal year last week, the publisher did not factor the game's release into its financial outlook for the April 1, 2009, to March 31, 2010 period.
dang i wanted to see next-gen jade too...

doesnt really look very interesting at all... to be honest it looks really ******! what was so great about the first one anyway? -_-
who gives a balls if its pre or active as long its playable also they conversation should be more wheter or not its real which I beleive its real
nope, I do 3D rendering for a living, that is 100% PRE RENDERED.
FabulousGamer90: Valid points. Perhaps it's built on the AC engine like thenephariouson mentioned, so they might not have to do as much work as you think, thus not having to make it a major feature. Then again, if it is built on the AC engine, that's exactly what it was built for, so I guess we'll just have to hope we get details at E3. ;)
hahaha! when is this coming out??
Since it was ubisoft that developed the technology seen in AC (total freedom to roam & climb), you can bet that they will utilise this technology on quite a few games including SC: Conviction.
@stickiey Fair enough, but allow me to explain further... If Jade has the ability to do these things in cutscenes, you can bet your ass it will be implemented into the gameplay. It wouldn't make sense for them to put this stuff in a cutscene not to implement it into the gameplay, otherwise the cutscene would be quite out of place and make people think 'wtf?' And you can do this stuff in-game then its going to be a major feature. It wouldn't just be an extra or for one level only, because they would need to spend a long time fine-tuning it and they wouldn't bother if its not a major part of the game. This is evidenced even more by this parkour cutscene being one of the first we've seen to hype the game. So, if this is now a game centred around action and parkour, how is it Beyond Good and Evil anymore? I remember it as a fantasy adventure game. This bears no resemblance to that. Thats what i'm trying to say.
As welcome as such a sequel would be... Before anyone gets too excited about this - or any other - leak, I recommend perusing the Wikipedia entry (and its references) pertaining to something called Operation Mincemeat. After all, pulling off such deception would be hugely amusing.
i saw this video a long time ago on G4 TV when they showed last years E3.
neat video.. cant wait for the game tho
LoL Swine flu.
ps: the sides of the of the helicopter were in the colors of the irish flag! go Ireland!!!
I looked at the footage on Youtube & i'm positive that its a cutscene but I really cant wait to get his one though I loved the first one
I never played the first, but I'll be keeping my eye on this. Time to check out this video...
Very seldom do I really like games with a female protagonist. It's just my personal preference. Beyond Good and Evil was a GLARING exception. I cannot wait to play the second. The first was a masterpiece.
Looks fantastic, but a year + wait?
@FabulousGamer90 Just cause she didn't do it in the first game, doesn't mean she wasn't capable of doing it if the engine had supported it. Remember the rooftop escape sequence from the hidden base? You had to do a lot of doging, and jumping and such. I think this is just an extension of that, now that they have the technology to do it. Plus, Jade does know some martial arts, so this wouldn't totally be out of the realm of possibility.
Love it! Can't wait to play Jade again.
What. The hell. I don't remember Jade having the ability or being physically capable of doing Assassin's Creed style parkour moves, and why is this game looking very different all of a sudden?? I'm all for change as long as it suits the style and tone of the game in question, but I could never imagine Beyond Good and Evil being like this. Why is Ubisoft under the impression that this game has to bare no resemblance to the original to be good? Seriously, if they're going to change it completely just call it something else and make a new setting and everythings good. Don't get me wrong, this looks pretty cool, and its obviously a cutscene. But christ it seems nothing like Beyond Good and Evil anymore.
Nietzsche's writing a sequal? wtf I thought he was dead!?
looking forward to this game just because i'd like to play a decent 'action/adventure/platform' game again. The best games in this genre are Little Big Adventure 1 and 2. I still hope for a LBA3.....
nice
that footage, either game play or pre-rendered looked more like mirror's edge's kind of game play than B G&E's,except you have jade instead of fate ;) anyways the fact that there is a footage like that circling around can't be a bad news.
Please come out soon! XD
Not a chance that's real footage. It's just too good. Not just the graphics either: The camera is obviously anticipating what she is going to do next. Also the perfect positions of the cars on the street, those last two shots fired as her as she leaps out of the building, totally scripted. I'd defiantly believe that was concept art, though, in which case their bar for this game is set really high.
I loved BG & E and i can't wait to get my hands on this one!
Look at the graphic of the image lol its to good!, the game wont be like that...
this is a rendered animation product no way its a gameplay video!!
Now with this trailer the deserted E3 movie makes sense. Can't wait for the next E3! Just a few days left, and the news will flow into our hands. Hehe.
I find this pretty amusing. Ubisoft managed to "accidentally" leak footage to two of their games? I think not, lol. They should just put their trailers on their site and entitle them 'Tell us what you think because there's still time for changes!'
Looks like a QTE sequence without the buttons popping up on screen. The camera moves too freely and precisely for it to be in-game, surely?
Let me reiterate, you can find it by click on the video middle left in the text :D
Can easily be found by googling guys. If it is gameplay footage then it looks out of this world. More Mirrors Edge than Zelda (which the original was like) The first was a massive flop though.
Gameplay footage? This rather looks like an in-game cinematic.
An one year old trailer Sweeet! gamespot can't show the leaked footage. So why do you guys think that they are referring to this trailer!
KV: Wow, that looks great. Jesus: Yes, it sure does. KV: Hey Jesus, have you played the first game? Jesus: Sadly, no. KV: Yeah, me neither. Jesus: You know what? I'm going to find a copy on Amazon and buy it there, and also play it. KV: Yeah, that seems like great idea, Jesus.
made me want to play the first one again
Yeah that was a real trailer. If anyone bothered playing or even Googling the game before commenting that is Paige who is Jade's trusty sidekick. I believe 100% that was an official leaked trailer.
Ew
they obviously leaked this themselves. Good publicity. If not, it wouldve been taken down on youtube by now
I guess I should've added I was talking specifically about the video on this page. I share the same opinion about the youtube video. Keeping in mind that it was more than likely off of the special "beefed up" consoles the developers get so once again, they'll probably have some things slightly toned down but neither movie has anything the 360/ps3 can't handle, especially considering that games will look better as the developers learn to make games for them (obvously). Assasins creed was released a year and a half ago (about) and was (and still is) a beautiful game. Ubisoft has almost always had games that look better than most everything else on the market at the time so it doesn't surprise me that people are questioning it. If I were an Ubisoft employee I'd be humbled that people think that my in game footage is pre-rendered. But once again, it more than likely won't look quite as snazzy when it comes to us. I have no doubt it will be near the quality that is shown. We're only on our second "generation" (about) of games for this generation of consoles. The games always look better as a system ages.
well did refer to it but not in the sence of the main article.
Does anyone here actually realize that the video on this page is not the footage they are referring to?
It looks too good to be actual gameplay, but at the same time there was some studdering (slowdown) at many points of the video (17sec in to 35, and again at 57secs when it pans across the water), which usually isn't present in pre-rendered movies. So it's very likely that it's using the in-game engine, they might just tone down the graphics a bit when there's a lot more going on in the screen. I mean, in the video the only graphics intensive objects are the car, water (with reflections) and Jade/Pey'j since the huge desert area wouldn't really be rendered after it zooms in to them. Just my thoughts..I could definately be wrong, but it doesn't seem like anything the 360/PS3 couldn't handle. And like I said, they'd likely have to tone it down a tad when there's a dozen enemies and things blowing up all over
the first game was SO awesome so i don't think that this one would be any less......awesome...
