Private equity firm makes second major investment in ZeniMax Media for "increased game development, expanded publishing operations, and strategic acquisitions."
Today, id Software and Bethesda Softworks' parent company received a massive infusion of cash. This morning, ZeniMax Media announced that private venture-capital firm Providence Equity Partners is investing $150 million in the Bethesda, Maryland-based media firm for "increased game development, expanded publishing operations, and strategic acquisitions."
This isn't the first time Providence has made a massive investment in ZeniMax. In October 2007, the firm announced it was investing $300 million to "increase game development and publishing, facilitate acquisitions, and finance massively multiplayer online games."
While ZeniMax Online's MMOG--widely suspected to be based on the Elder Scrolls franchise--did not surface in the intervening three years, ZeniMax did say today its development resources have tripled. That was in large part due to the reportedly $105 million acquisition of id Software, the developer behind the Quake and Doom franchises, as well as the upcoming Rage. Then this past August, ZeniMax bought Arx Fatalis creator and BioShock 2 contributor Arkane Studios for an undisclosed sum.
@Col-Struckin BioWare for #1. Then Bethesda. I love Fallout 3 and TE3 and TE4 but KotOR and f***ing Mass Effect, so much better when it comes to story.
Their new stuff is alright i guess, but these guys made doom 1, 2, heretic, quake 1 and 2, wolfenstein. All the other stuff since has been mediocre in comparison but we'll forgive them :)
The best game devs in the business (in my opinion): 1. Bethesda 2. Rockstar 3. Bungie. (I do not own a PS3 so I cannot form any opinion on any of their exclusives)
It's NOT THE console that's the problem, but the game developers and the software. The hardware at the time of production was more than adequate for previous games of Elder...etc. It was the creators of the game(s) responsibility to create games that matched the quality of the platform...which they didn't. I do agree though that the next massive Elder Scrolls game, if it goes to console vs. MMOG, should be on the next generation console that supports 3D tech. Playing ES-V in full depth 3D would be........very interesting I'm sure!
Current gen consoles just don't do the Elder Scrolls world any justice in terms of how it should be rendered and appear/move. Those 10 fps moments in TES 4 were horrible..
ELDER SCROLLS V !!! I say they should save it for the next generation of consoles, that way we get an ultimately better looking game and they can do something about the horrendous animations that plague elder scrolls games. Gogo TES V ! :) P.S. Single Player with perhaps Co-op would be excellent. No MMO please..
Elder Scrolls 5 please. I can't understand the delay. Sure they've been working on Fallout New Vegas, but surely most of the work has been obsidion? But please don't make ES5 MMO, its fine just the way it is. All I (and others it seems) want is a new story, new quests, slightly better graphics and a handful of new features. Come on Bethesda you know you want it as much as we do!!
If they make ES V into a mmo i won't even read the review. I just want more of the old formula with new bells and whistles, and mods of course.
I would like to play a great fallout mmo but I don't think we currently have the tech to pull it off yet. Wow is great for those gamers that dont mind simple animations and everything to those ends so I rather have another great offline adventure like morrowind was please and thanks!
Is it wrong that I was hoping this was a bribe in order to get them to hurry up and work on Elder Scrolls V? :P
Like I said before, I'm excited to see what they are going to do in the future. And when can we expect a new generation of consoles? it seems like all upgrades can be done from downloading patchs and updates right from their servers.. maybe 2015 or later?
Dear god, please don't let another beloved franchise fall into the pit of mediocrity that is an MMO.
@bonereaper69 WoW is not everything despite being considered the best mmorpg. You can get many fine online experiences so don't reject mmorgs just because they aren't wow. It's about time for a The Elder Scrolls 5 game. Would prefer it to be a single player game.
@TheVGamer I agree, they are really talented; infact I'd say talented to make both TES-V AND a TES MMO. Personally, I hope for both since I love the dialog, exploration, depth and continual new content an MMO can provide as well as the awesome focused scope of the traditional TES games. Also, I couldn't disagree more that an MMO means poor graphics, look at Aion and the new FF as examples of pretty MMOs.
These companies dont understand that NO MMO can compete with World Of Warcraft, which is sadly one of the best games ever created, and best MMO in history
No, no MMOs. It just means lower graphical quality and stupid dialog. I want good ol' singleplayer( maybe coop?) Elder Scrolls and I want the V to be game of the next decade! Asking too much? I don't think so, people at Bethesda are really talented.
I'd be a very happy gamer to hear that an Elder Scrolls V was imminent. I'm on the fence whether or not I care if its an MMO. I just hope it's more like Morrowind and less like the repetitive, yawn-fest that Oblivion turned into by it's end. The co-leveling system in Oblivion was ridiculous also. I'm not trying to be a hater. I'm a huge fan of most Bethesda games (I still can't stop playing FO 3) but Morrowind was far and away the better game. What do you think?
Just like everyone else, I want Doom 4 and TES 5 so badly. But something tells me we won't be seeing those games until the new generation of consoles come. Which is lame, but I know it will be amazing when it hits.
To the people who say that oblivion was easy... Well, you guys know that you had the difficulty option setting, didn't you? Oblivion was made for the new generation consoles before they even where in the market and still, they did a great job.
@Morphine OD and Gladestone1 - I too want a more complex game than Oblivion was, but if you think about it from the devs point of view, simplifying it made the game more accessible and therefore the sales greater. Unfortunately for us who prefer the more complex games, it's the money that will talk to the devs no matter how much we squawk about it. :(
@Gladestone1 Same here, man. I'm pretty tired of simplicity and teen-orientation. Bring back the hardcore.
I don't want FO4 to "kick ass" like ES5. I want it to be a gaming legend like it's predecessors were. I want it to be clever and engaging, not "awesome" and "rocking" or "kick-ass."
I couldn't get enough of Oblivion. I think I played for 6 months straight with over 200 hours poured into it, and I didn't even finish the game. I finished all the side quests and got a bit over halfway through the main quest before diverting to Shivering Isles. The main quest was the only thing that was lacking. Bethesda, just give us TES V and make the main quest awesome!
Elder Scrolls 5 will kick ass. Fallout 4 will kick ass. Maybe they will be extended to MMO? I'm excited to see what this rich bunch are going to do in the years to come.
Elder Scrolls V please! And make it single player. You can do an MMORPG too if you want, but don't forget to do the next great single player RPG.
Where the hell is my Doom 4 and Elder Scrolls 5 Bethesda? Actually I have a better idea- give some money to the real Fallout makers (Interplay) so they can work on Fallout Online!
I hope a good bit of that money goes towards Rage. I haven't really been impressed by anything id's done since Quake II (Q3A had its moments but Unreal Tournament was better) but Rage has some promise. It looks like they might actually innovate instead of making a pretty game with ancient game mechanics like Doom 3.
When is lazy Id gonna release doom 4 ive been waiting for it for the past five years since it was announced
I know I know.....but I just hope some of the money is given to some Doom 4 development, I'm a doom junky and have every game on every system it was put out on.....so yeah, just a little for them too would be nice.
I've always wanted a modular TES game. I never have liked how each game is based on a separate continent/country and there is no interplay between titles. Wouldn't it be amazing to travel from Daggerfell through Cyrodiil to Vvardenfell all in one game. How massive and epic would that be? Start with one country and as they continued development, they could add on the other countries/continents and quests. Then you could have a quest that spans the entire world. Follow the trail of a murderer across numerous cities and countries. Go on a magical pilgrimage to the scattered magical guild HQ's to learn the secrets of the most powerful magics. Make a name for yourself as a monster slayer or gladiator as you trek across the world. I wish they'd use that money to make my dream come true, but sadly I feel it is something that will never happen...
