Sam Fisher zip lines to top, zombies rise again, Bully overcomes criticisms, and guess what's back...Nintendogs.
With the launch of the PlayStation 3 and Wii just a few weeks away, Microsoft is savoring its last moments as the lone next-gen console on the market. Three of the four top-selling games from Bestbuy.com last week were Xbox 360 titles, which likely won't be the case once the console's competitors hit the market.
The online retailer's best-selling game for the week of October 15 to 21 was Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent for the Xbox 360--the next-gen debut for the stealth franchise. Second place went to Capcom's Dead Rising, which continues to see brisk sales as an Xbox 360 exclusive. The final Xbox 360 game in the top 10 was Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07, which debuted this week in the fourth spot.
Nintendo's Touch Generation games, which preach brain over brawn, continue their splash here in the US with four titles in the top 10. Chart mainstay Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day landed in third, the pooches of Nintendogs: Dalmatian and Friends clawed into fifth, Big Brain Academy took seventh, and the compilation Clubhouse Games was ninth. Noticeably missing from the chart was another DS game--New Super Mario Bros.
The final three spots went to PlayStation 2 games. Rockstar Games' Bully overcame heaps of controversy and pummeled its way to seventh. The previous week's chart topper, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 for the PS2, dropped to ninth on the leaderboard, while the PS2 version of Madden NFL 07, which has a shot at best-selling game of the year, hung tight in 10th.

people who think the ps3 game sales are going to beat out the 360 game sales have no logic. theres only going to be 400,000 ps3's while there are millions of 360's. are you trying to say that everyone who buys a ps3 is going to buy 2 or 3 copies of the same game?! rofl...morons. now the wii on the other hand...i could see twilight princess selling a million copies since its a must have for the wii and there will be plenty of consoles around.
Dead Rising was on sale that week for $39.99 at Best Buy. That *might* account for the "brisk sales". I bought one and a 360. Also got them to price match (with Circuit City) a free Microsoft wireless controller too.
"Microsoft is savoring its last moments as the lone next-gen console on the market. Three of the four top-selling games from Bestbuy.com last week were Xbox 360 titles, which likely won't be the case once the console's competitors hit the market" That´s a pretty fanboyish statement for a Gamespot employee. I´m not about which company "rules". I´m about good games.
nosepicker22 "I hate Dead Rising! I can't find out why people like it so much. It's wayyyyyy too hard. " Maybe cuz you are just the onlyone who is bad at it or it's an actualy good game that a lot of people always wanted to do but could not in real life.
Why do so many people like Madden? In my opinion that game was never good. ESPN NFL football is the best NFL game ever made. GO YOU DALLAS COWBOYS GO!!!
Correct me if my logic is wrong on this but i believe the reason you consistently see these 360 games in the top 10 in sales even though it has less than 15% of the installed base that Sony has is because the majority of 360 owners are adults, have jobs and a car to get them to the store to buy games. You may have millions of consoles in the hands of your consumers but if none of them can buy your games what good does it do you?
I think Gears of War will be 1st next month, think about it. It will mostlikly sell 1 million next month, and with the Ps3 selling 500.000 units its impossible a game from that console to surpass it. Same to wii ( i am talking about US)
RaiKageRyu "The strength of the Xbox360 will severely be tested in the upcoming year." If they keep releasing hits like Gears of War, there going to have nothing to worry about. Halo 3 anyone?
You can't hate dead rising, it isn't that hard, it is just a game that requires a little bit of dedication to get going, it's awesome when you get going.
nosepicker22 - "I hate Dead Rising! I can't find out why people like it so much. It's wayyyyyy too hard." Just keep playing it, your character gets stronger, more health, and new moves.
umm...it says Madden NFL 07 is in tenth, but I don't see it up there... It also says Tiger Woods 07 for the PS2 is in ninth...
It's going to be interesting to see FFXII sales vs Gears of War sales this November. What's your bet?
After the Nintendo and Sony craze in November, Microsoft will regain the top spot in hardware and game sales through the holidays of 2007
Ah, forgot about Sega CD. It did came out before. But your taking it too fanboy-way. Gamespot is just stating what many also see as a realistic forecast when all consoles will be clashing. Microsoft's gaming division has only the 360 to care about (unless they have a handheld planning). Because it came early, it didn't had time include the HD-DVD function into the 360 & rather have, in simple words, a "boost up" XBOX while the others incorporate either Blu-Ray, or motion sensing at the same time a "boost up" of their "previous" systems' core. The interconnected network would still have seen the day even if Microsoft didn't brought it up, and I wouldn't call that innovation but rather an evolution of the existant console online network.
RE: the_real_vip I love how you pick and choose the innovations I listed. "PS1 was the first console to use optical media" Wrong. The Turbo Graphix did it first and, if I'm not mistaken, Sega's optical drive for the Gensis was next. "Next Gen technology is coming in a wave"... a wave that was brought on by the original XBox and the announcement of the XBox 360. The success of the XBox 360 almost certainly did push the other companies to faster release dates. A wise move when you look at the sales charts as of late. The XBox also set the expectations for what "Next Gen" should mean. Superior graphics that should compete with graphics seen on the PC. Mass media storage capable of storing game addons and even full games that are downloadable. Online capabilities for almost every game released. HD graphics. Before the XBox... it was understood that PC games were going to look better than console games. Now, only top end PCs can compete with 360 graphics, even a year after it's release. Gears of War is going to raise the bar yet again. I'm not trashing Sony or Nintendo... I'm just pointing out the fact that MS doesn't get the respect they deserve. No one can refute the fact that all of the features considered "next gen", MS did them first. Weather you like MS or not, you would be hard pressed to deny that console gaming is better than it would have been if there had never been an XBox. MS is already working on the 3rd iteration of the XBox. They are doing R&D for the next generation of consoles before Sony has even worked the kinks out of Blue-Ray.
Any game that Best Buy carries Wal-Mart does also and thats where i buy some of games cause there cheaper. The more hardcore games I just get a EB.
Grive is right, even though EB & Gamestop sells a lot, they do not have an "unlimited" stock of some titles compared to BestBuy. Even if the average gamer goes to BestBuy, so does hardcore gamers for availability.
For everyone complaining about "best buy being only part, blah blah blah"... First, some basic statistics. No polls you ever see will have 100% of the sample. For a 95% accurate (with a 5% confidence interval) reading of the purchasing habits of every single X360 console owner, for example, you'd only need 385 people. For 99% accuracy, you need a (rather omnious) 666 people. Best Buy sells a much, much higher number of games per week than this, you know? Second, going to a major, general retailer will induce a much smaller bias. EB and Gamestop cater to a more serious gaming audience. Hardcore titles will be overrepresented in respect to more casual ones (pretty simple, the person going to an EB is much more likely to get, say, Oblivion or Dead Rising than Over the Hedge, all other things being equal). There is a slight bias in best buy, but it's much smaller than anywhere else. With this in mind, Best Buy sales charts should be considered to be a relatively accurate representation of what's happening out there. Despite what you guys seem to think, Gamespot isn't run by monkeys. Not all of gamespot, at least :p
Re vbdevpro: I'm not sure about innovation and raising the bar since the XBOX came out. If it is innovation you would like to bring up: PlayStation was the 1st console to use the optical media as a gaming data storage & the 1st to bring the Dual Analog & Dual Shock (vibration) on the controller that now everyone use. XBOX came out after the PS2 and the Gamecube; of course the system is more powerful than the first 2. Next-gen technology is coming in a wave where all console makers jumped in at the same time but didn't released their console at the same time. What your statement state there isn't about innovation but competition. Pricing obviously goes down between console makers as it is in the competition "law". What you call Wii controllers "gimmicky controllers" IS actually innovation in home entertainment. How much do you wanna bet the next Microsoft entertainment system will have an entirely interactive motion sensing controller? Moreover, how come Microsoft has not come out with an INNOVATIVE handheld system, or even simpler, just a SIMPLE handheld gaming system YET? Treating them bias? You really need to re-read your post.
 Damn! Brain Age and Big Brain Academy are on here still. I don't know, maybe GS needs to get with somebody besides BB.com for this best sellers list. It just doesn't seem accurate to me.
"Three of the four top-selling games from Bestbuy.com last week were Xbox 360 titles, which likely won't be the case once the console's competitors hit the market" It's comments like this that just destroys Gamespot's credibility to me. I mean... come on. How is that news? Can you really call your selves professional journalists with bias jabs like this? How is that presenting a fact? I'm going to copy this... save it and when November hits and x360 sales are still beating the pants off of PS3 I'm going to repost it and laugh. What exactly do you have against the XBox? You've had it in for MS since day 1. You underrated games until people started calling your BS by comparing your low ball scores to other sites and publications, but you still can't seem to hide your disdain for MS. MS has done nothing but innovate and raise the bar for video games since the coming of the XBox. Sony and Nintendo both would have been happy to just sit back and reap the profits from their cheap and outdated consoles had MS not pushed the gaming community into the next generation. Online console gaming would have died with the Dreamcast had XBox not made it mainstream. Sony would have been charging $300 or more for it's PS2s had it not been forced to lower it's prices to keep competitive with a technically superior system. HD console gaming started and was proven viable on the XBox. MS INVENTED and perfected the online community for consoles and now the others are finally trying to catch up with perks like downloadable content that XBox gamers have had for 5 years now. It's because of MS that you are getting a PS3, wii and that they have the features they have. You think the PS3 would have a harddrive if the XBox and 360 didn't already do it first? Do you think the price of the PS3 would have dropped if the XBox360 hadnt provenIt's because of MS that wii gamers will be able to download classic games. What innovation has Sony and Nintendo brought to the table lately? Gimmicky controllers? I do not think you Gamespot editors are PS or Nintendo fanboys... but because of little pot shots and jobs like this, I cannot shake the feeling that you absolutely hate MS. Whatever the reason, please show a little appreciation for the company and systems that have drug the console gaming community kicking and screaming into the next generation.
Best Buy does indeed mean something because it's where the average gamer shops. While you might like specialty shops (as do I), it's not the first place the casaul gamer goes to pick up a game. So those "Good" titles you are talking about, well the reason B.Buy doesn't carry a lot of them is because the demand probably isn't there enough for them to bother. This in turn effects what types of games are made in the future. That's why you've seen a decline in niche games in the last 5 or so years.
I didn't say anything about preordering PS3 or Wii from Best Buy. . . I said their gaming sales charts doesn't mean crap from the what whole industry sales are all over. Best Buy is one store and what there top 10 sellers for that 1 week is doesn't mean squat. Most of their games are just sports titles and kiddy games with the exceptional good title.
KingofTrolls, you're not being serious right? Yeah, perhaps Best Buy doesn't get all the games that EB and Gamestop might... but each store sells at least 5x more than its gaming competitors by a long shot. Not to mention that if you don't have the PS3 or Wii on preorder already you'd be a fool to go anywhere else than Best Buy at getting a chance in buying one, seeing as how last year those stores had around 60 360's while those who got preorders from EB waited all the way til March to get one. So yes, this chart means something.
Yet another victory for the MS / Nintendo alliance!!:D The downfall of Sony is happening before our very eyes!
BEST BUY Charts dont mean anything, you actually think this place sells serious games compared to Gamestop or EB or even online stores and local stores. Best Buy doesn't even get half the good games the rest of these places get. I'M SO SICK OF THIS BEST BUY GAMING CHART CRAP.
This Chart seems pretty accurate. Its interesting to see Dead Rising, um rising the ranks again. Definitely a good showing for the 360. Next month is going to be a firefight with all of those high profile games coming out.
OVER THE HEDGE?! why is that up there, the game is ok (my step bro has got it) but it doesnt deserve to be up there.
I don't trust this chart. I don't believe that over the hedge sold more copies than bully. There is no way that over the hedge sold more copies than bully as a whole.
I don't think so Berserker_2. With the much hyped LoZ: Twilight Princess coming out and FF12, there will still be competition. Gears of War might be up there, but it won't surpass these two.
The artlcle says that the 360 won't hold the top spots when the consoles launch next month. But there will be 7-8 million 360s, DOAX2, and Gears of War. It will be a tough fight.
