Avalanche boss defends Xbox One reveal

Just Cause studio founder Christofer Sundberg praises Microsoft's approach, says it allows E3 showing to be all about the games.

Avalanche Studios founder and chief creative officer Christofer Sundberg has come out to defend Microsoft's Xbox One reveal, which faced criticism after it focused primarily on the system's non-gaming applications and services.

Speaking with Edge, Sundberg said Microsoft's approach was a smart one because by focusing on the platform's "all in one" ideals, it attracted the mainstream press. This way, Microsoft's showing at E3 next month can be--as the company has promised--all about games.

"Microsoft has said that it wants to make the Xbox One an entertainment center," Sundberg said. "If it was dubbed the ultimate gaming machine at this point, Microsoft would lose the attention of general media. This way, they are grabbing mainstream attention first and can focus entirely on gamers at E3. After that they'll have both in their grasp. The Xbox is and has always been a gaming platform, and I don't see that changing with the Xbox One."

Sundberg was also eager to praise the next-generation Kinect sensor that will ship with every Xbox One. He said the technology opens up loads of possibilities, especially in the children's game market.

"I see Kinect as one of many possibilities to make gaming experiences on the Xbox One better," Sundberg said. "I have dreamt of making an open-world/sandbox game for kids for many years and in that case I can see a strong support for the Kinect enhancing the experience, while I have a hard time making a perfect fit with some of our games in development at the moment."

The Xbox One launches later this year. Microsoft will ship 15 exclusive titles for the platform during its first 12 months. Eight of these games will be all-new franchises. For more, check out GameSpot's Xbox One news hub.

Even though I dont like the fact of mandatory connecting once per day (regarding the fact that I already do connect every time with my xbox 360 when i use it), and that I feel uncertain about the privacy of the kinect... I think guys, we are being really paradigmatic!, xbox one will include kinect and is making a big change to make your device more Cloud powered. We all talk about the cloud, but we use it in very small scale, now that comes a console that is really clould focused, we all panic in fear, think about it, would you buy a Notebook only clould powered? an smarphone? would you have all your information in a clould?.. it is the next big change and we are all  afraid.... However, what I really dont like is the deal with used games (charging a fee for what is yours is not fair), The concept is that when you pay for something is your, period!, charging a fee is a way of saying "Hey we think games are not worth 60 bucks anymore, no, we want to sell them at least for 400$ or 500$ each, so we came up with this, f** urself"... But in conclussion, With all big changes comes either big failures or comes great sucess!, usually the later... maybe 3 years from now all these nowdays scandals will be nothing but jokes i think

Yes, focusing on the mainstream market is a good idea, but still, a bit more about gaming would have helped a lot, after all isn't this a console? Or is it a pseudo PC with very limited capabilities? Plus giving more about games would certainly take attention away from the doubts that are going around.

And this is MS biggest failure, they concentrated on the system, and when people asked about the system, they got the answers that didn't appeal to them, so pretty much people on E3 will be looking for answers to this questions as much as they are looking for the games.

IMHO, considering the ultimate result, they would be better off with more focus on games and letting the add do their job at targeting the mainstream market.

Did you hate too much to Microsoft ? Let me make clear here, Xbox 1 has a lot of function in living room and MS need to separate the presentation into 2 times, first on what X1 can do in living room and second on game on E3.

It is OK for me. So next event you can concentrate on E3 and what Xbox 1 does not impress you in living room. It is the best machine as of now which include console, cable, Kinect and TV function in one box ? It is amazing to see what it will be in living room, I think

@Ayebang @Logan_uc It´s not that they separate things giving more attention to the system and than games, the problem here is that for games they gave multi platform games, nothing relay to show for people looking for a console, and even started a lot of vocal concerns about kinetic, DRM, used games etc. do you really think that they wont have to focus on this on E3? They have failed at making E3 all about games.

You know that you don't need a X1 to watch TV, or to have cable, you already need to have this things so they work on X1. Consoles? There are more in the market, and Kinetic seems at this point more of a problem than an advantage.

I stand in my opinion that a simple add would do a better job than this reveal for its target market, if  you want to pull something like this, you should have good answers for the questions that will come after, because you have no games to draw attention to, and saying that you can watch TV on your TV isn't that great for most people that take notice of this kind of event.

Sony just went for the "Look at our game", and the concerns about their console dropped. And what MS achieved with this reveal in the mainstream market can be easily emulated  by Sony with good mainstream marketing.

Microsoft stated beforehand that this would absolutely not be a conference about games. If your upset that they didn't focus on games then please don't buy an xbox one.it would be unlikely your smart enough to operate the system. Please stick with the console that only plays games and not much else.

Answer: Oh common Xbox 1 can do a lot in living room, a lot better than Apple TV, more than just a game console. This is a teasor time...They will show how to run game in E3 for sure.This event for game.

Kinect has more point of problem than advantage ? It is stupid. Many complained about privacy..What about Google glass ? Google who had bad practice in privacy in the past and still present will record the picture and maybe go back to Google. They will know what you go where you are. Is it more dangerous than Kincet ? Wait and see. Microsoft will show more details in Kinect with this Xbox 1. They do no show details that much. Most negative comments on most advance tech camera in Kinect based on pure speculation like always on internet in the past

However, how can Xbox 1 one fail in E3 due to the event will show in June 10....Oh god.

I want something new more advance in technology. I do not need much cable box in my living room. If X1provide more alternatives, will see what going on ?

Xbox 1 have no game..it is ridiculous comments...Microsoft will show in E3 about game as I said. wait and relax. Give time to Microsoft to unview it. Do not go too far.

Does it really matter?  It's still a prohibitive spy machine, no matter what games they show off.  They (Microsoft/Sony) all heard the popular response to the DRM methods proposed last year; Sony decided to hold off for this next gen and MS went all in with the mindset of #getoverit.

@chucknorris86 @Uesugi-dono - The irony there is "no, you really can't!"  It is always listening, maybe always watching.  My PC spies?  Hard to do since my PC is a laptop that spends most of its time in a bag.  My cell phone has the location services turned off.  Facebook?  Please, I learned from Myspace.  No Facebook for me, no twitter, no social media unless you count Gamespot.  Google?  Ok, I'll give you that one.  Google scans my email to target ads that I completely ignore but that doesn't excuse a camera and microphone that can be controlled OFF SITE to constantly watch and listen inside my house.  No thanks.

All they had to do  before the reveal was announce that the reveal was about the console and what it could do, and E3 was going to be about games. But they didn't and now they've stirred a nerdy hornets nest

@4rwfG @Ayebang Microsoft always got bad reception. It is normal, particularly from Apple fanboys  and now from Android around the World.

For example, Google launch Google glass and not much comment on privacy despite that it record everything and probably send back to Google. No serious issue on it. Until yesterday, Google said Google glass will not scan face for recognition, which I think it came from Kinect comments from most anti Microsoft who always show negative exaggeration sir.

They didnt focus on games because the games are pretty much the same as 360 games. Next gen I think not more like Xbox360 2.0.

@the_big_doggg Really I do not think so. Consideration to the graphic card and new modern CPU...Game will be more advance than 360 in term of rendering, 3D.

Last unveal is the teaser for Xbox 1 and most of that unview was about how it works in living room which no any other product can.

Next time next unview will be in E3. I think it will be about game. Wait and see

You say this but the main focus of PS4 was gasp... another killzone. Really? Really? Some dragon game all CGI does not count. I also bet we get more uncharted, more MGS, more final fantasy, more god of war, Gran Turismo, and so on. PS3 2.0?

@Playerpat0 I think Sony will give the fans what they want, but there will be a lot of new stuff like The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls. Naughty Dog and Quantic Dream could have just turned out sequels, but they're doing new stuff too. 

We'll certainly get more MGS, FF, GT's and stuff, so you're definitely right there.

The love of my life could come to me with a Xbox One and tell me that we will be together happily for the rest of our lives if only I could plug in the Xbox One and accept it into my life. I'd laugh in her face and close the door. You could be Her or you could be the founder of Avalanche studios and I would react the same way. Whatever your words are won't change what I've seen with my own eyes and heard with my own ears. You might even believe yourself Sundberg... but I doubt it too. You just got too much money invested in it to back out like everyone else wants to.

@Ayebang @bunchanumbers Some of older guys have a perspective on M$ that goes back to it's founding. One thing you need to keep in the back of your mind is that M$ is always focused on dominance. 

They're a pretty dark and ruthless bunch behind the sleazy smiling used car salesman schtick. They tell you what you want to hear then leave you hanging when you have a problem or you realize you didn't actually get what you paid for.

If you don't see that it's cool, but that's where some folks are coming from mentally.

I already have a mic and camera on my phone and laptop.  Microsoft wants to take this idea one step further and have them on all of the time.  These are going to be some great games to make me forget about the eagle eye in the room.

PlayStation has always been a simple designed console, imo opinion the Xbox has always tried too hard to impress, with its fussy online membership costs, battery required controllers and serious overheating problems, and I cant imagine how many games got ruined because of scratches from the disk drive. I just cant understand why so many people are still falling for the next Microsoft money trap, I already pay for SKY TV it would be stupid to pay extra to watch it through an Xbox One.

Make a new Crimson Skies ya bastards!!! Crimson Skies and Mech-Assault were some of the og Xbox's best exclusive games and Microsoft shut down the devs that made those games. C'mon Microsoft... back to basics.

As far as I'm concerned MS has crossed several lines with what is known about this console and at this point even if they have a complete change of heart I'm not going for this thing. Why, it is simple they will comeback with the same set of negatives with time the complete failure of the One would send a message to the industry to stay away from used game tax/online checks/spy cameras. Also there's MS patent that will come into play at some point in time allowing them to stop a movie if too many people are watching... I think I'll stick to renting movies on ps3/360.
