Aussie PS3 launch events draw modest crowds

Randolph Ramsay

Hundreds show up for midnight launches across Australia; retailers boasting record presales amounts.

The PlayStation 3 officially went on sale in Australia overnight, with hundreds of gamers lining up outside more than 500 retail stores across the nation to purchase Sony's latest console at midnight launch events.

The largest event was held at Sydney's Pitt St mall, where retail store Myer and Sony Computer Entertainment Australia teamed up to present launch-night activities, which included prize giveaways, live demonstrations, and a screening of Casino Royale on the big screen. Approximately 70 people lined up to grab their consoles at the Myer Pitt St store, with a hundred-strong crowd looking on. The PS3's arrival comes exactly one year after Microsoft's Xbox 360 launched in Australia. Microsoft's launch event for the 360--which was also held in Sydney's Pitt St mall--drew a crowd of close to 1,000 people.

Other retailers across Sydney also held launch events, most of which drew modest crowds. The Harvey Norman store at the Moore Park SupaCenta had close to 40 people attend its midnight launch activities, which included an appearance from Australian boxing great Kostya Tszyu. Tszyu was on hand to demo Fight Night Round 3, as well as sign the first PS3 sold at the store.

Over at EB Games at Bondi Junction in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, the launch crowd was even smaller, with approximately 20 people lined up outside the store to purchase their PS3s. Five major retailers opened late in the large shopping district of Chatswood, on Sydney's North Shore. The EB Games at Chatswood had about 30 customers in line, while the near-by Toys 'R' Us store scored 20.

Despite the low turnout, retailers were generally positive about the launch of Sony's next-generation product. Myer chief executive officer Bernie Brooks said his chain of stores experienced an extremely high number of PS3 presales, citing the figure at more than A$2 million. Harvey Norman, general manager for computers and communications at Rutland Smith, said his company is estimating that the PS3 will generate close to A$10 million in sales by Monday, with 50 percent coming from preorders.

Sony is also bullish, reporting that more than A$20 million worth of PS3s had been preordered prior to launch.

Business issues didn't concern gamers waiting in line for their console, though. Danny Zarka, the first person in line at Myer's Pitt St store, said he had been anxiously awaiting the PS3 for more than a year.

For more information, check out GameSpot AU's additional coverage of the Sydney launch events.

the more i read on the net about ps3, the more i learn that you cant trust anything you read on the internet. like one site that said the GPU and CPU of the 360 is 10times superior to the ones in ps3. what a load of crap, there not even better at all, ps3's gpu and cpu are far superior to the ones in 360 aka money grabber (pay for online, hd-dvd drive, play and charge kit etc you may aswell get a ps3 for that much). or mgs4 "confirmed" for 360, which is a load of crap. but it is true that PS3 broke the record for fastest selling game's console in the UK. and where i went to buy my ps3 in australia, there were at least 300 people there with pre-order reciepts, @Urban, i wish i could work 4 SONY, such a gr8 company that really cares for the consumers.

The more i hear about the PS3 the more i regret getting one. it is also becuse the more i hear about them, the less i hear about games. and as soon as i hear about an awsome game, it is now for every system. Please return to PS2 form Sony.

Firstly I thought the PS3 was a games console, and secondly what makes it this all encompassing Home entertainment system? And please say something besidess Blu-Ray, we all know it has Blu-Ray

"Modest" was a bit too generous of a way to describe the number of people at launch. A think a more appropriate way to describe it would be "damn pitiful". And bihboy69, if you don't have a job now, might I suggest you fax your resume to Sony? You seem to have that Sony mentality that allows you to spin any negative short of first degree murder into something positive for them. -=x

When I thought history wouldn't repeat itself, along came the PS3, to join the likes in the hall of shame with the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast

I don't think they could expect anything better they brought the hype down aussie a while back in November. Then dashed everyone's hopes by saying "wait a few more months" when they brought it back a whole new pre-order system was available. And kids in Australia, being one myself, don't actually have the money to spend to buy a PS3. Its $1000. Not many kids can afford that, which is why they buy the Wii or if they can an Xbox 360. Another reason that it was a kind of bad option to bring it in now is that its Easter and here we have the Royal Easter Show where kids splurge all their money. Another point to be made is that not every ps2 owner is a ps3 fanboy When Xbox 360 came out it was fairly expensive and still is today, but people bought it. Personally, I'm going to wait for another month and see what comes of the ps3. Theres a difference between the number of consoles sold and the number of happy gamers. If ps3 does have a price cut it will only show what bad options Sony took for the console, seeing as most consoles don't get a price drop in the first six months. I urge Sony to bring out the 20GB so that it at least gets off the 4-digit-mark.

I can't imagine why it only got "modest" crowds. It's to expensive for a console (only PC gamers think that's cheap for gaming, considering the most high end graphics cards are around $600). Also it doesn't really have any awesome games, and the games that were going to be exclusive have mostly gone to the 360 too now. So really there is no point to waste all your money on this doomed console. It most likely will go the way of the Sega Saturn or Dreamcast...

PS3 is not a good console 1 factorthat it will keep the ps3 at number 3 forever! Developers say it's to damn hard to make games for ps3 Why do you think 360 is picking up so many sony games? Sega Saturn was the same now ps3 will follow... Case closed!!!!

DDT88, Microsoft cant sell its console for $1000, because Mr. Smart A$$ its not worth that much, it costs them less to manufacture the product then the prices they sell them at ... As for Sony, the console is actually worth having just for its capability to play Blu-Ray Disks, adding to that the game factor and HOME factor, it should be worth $1000, and if your not buying it then just say i don't think i have the money to buy it, or say that your an X-Box fan, don't brag about how its not worth a thousand just because u can't afford it or because you u love the BoX, i admire those who just say i support Microsoft, or i cant afford it, or complain about the price, but to say its not worth a $1000 with a smart a$$ attitude, well let me tell you its worth double that price ... I'm not buying it because Winning Eleven is not out yet on it, as soon as its released, i am buying them both on the same day ...

i would buy one. its just that the price is too much. but it is worth all the money considiring all the hadware thats in it. you can't buy a blu-ray dvd player for much under $2000.

The ps3 is a good console but it's so far behind in the system wars that i'm not sure it's a very good idea for sony to be cost cutting at the expense of functionality and generally taking advantage of gamers. It sucks being a pall gamer you pay more for a system which does less and you have to wait longer to get it. Sony my goodwill is running out very very quickly.

Went into my local EB today and asked how they went with the launch. They said they had sold 50 ps3s and were completely out. Of course when I said I wanted to buy one they changed their tune and reassured me that they had one out the back just for me. It's not like EB to lie to customers.

This is the indicator Sony needed to be told that Australia isn't happy about the $1000 price nor the gimped backwards compatibility. A hell of alot of import PS3's have been bought on ebay by Aussies and this is the reason.

DK3410
DK3410

Ebay is going to be an interesting place to visit for the next couple of weeks... Check the winning bids to see how much people are actually WILLING to fork out for one of these. So far, I've seen winning bids at $320 pounds and another at $380 pounds. Both are lower than the street price of the PS3. Of course, it's anyone's guess as to whether the owner is going to honour the deal.

Sony trying to talk up the figures as per usual. One word describes the launch.... Flop. It's easy to brandish figures like this around when you are asking $1000 for a console. Xbox360 would have at least four times this amount in comparison if M$ had charged a $1000 for it's console.

Not bad for pre-order profits sony made lots of moula last night and the publicity wasnt that bad either it must have eveyone else that didnt get one probally want one by now.

hmmm... I'm sure that the PS3 is going to fine up in the future, but at the moment it has a fair bit of catch-up to play. Both the Wii and 360 have outsold it at launch, and they were launched with better titles... not to mention that the upcoming highlights (and there are quite a few, granted) in terms of games for the PS3 are probably going to be released for the 360 as well. Oh well, I would still be happy to get this console (when the price drops). Before Sony can even think about any 'console war' they are going to have to sort some stuff out. There is a big fan base out there who were expecting the next PS2, and so far it hasn't been delivered. At the moment i am happy with my Wii and PS2. Oh, and the price is definately too high

As happy as i am to see this slap in the face to sony, who have been milking their fans for cash for a while now, hopefully this serves as a wake-up call to the entire industry, the minority will be stupid enough to shell out the $1000 for a PS3 but the rest of us that a thousand dollars is and enourmous amount of money to be spending on a videogame console, some claim it to be an investment, but paying for the console, maybe a few extra controllers and games and online play your already looking at upwards of $2000, what kind of returns do intend to see from this "investment" ? how many years before sony asks you to pay another thousand or more for a new console? dont get me wrong, its a quality peice of hardware (well even there we'll have to see about its reliability, if its anything like the PS2's then we might even see several PS3 remakes, costing you more money...) but the amount of money neede to maintain this hobby is ridiculously high and in no way worth it. The smartest thing would be to sit back and WAIT (you sure you fanboys are capable of that?) and be smart with your money.

Sepincourt, Yes your right, we wont be able to tell what console will win in the first couple of hours of the launch, we have to wait. Anyway I don't really care what console wins or loses they all have things about them, that makes them wicked, PS3 - Hi-Def Gaming + Final Fantasy Series and waiting for Killzone Wii - The Controller + Super Smash Bro. and Mario Galaxy X360 - Able to Hook Up To Vista via MediaCentre2 + Halo3 and Gears of War. Even though I only have a Wii I'm saving up for a PS3 & a X360 because unless the three companies make a console together, I won't be able to play Gears of War on my PS3 or Wii, or play Final Fantasy XIII on my Wii or X360 and etc.

Modest crowds eh? Har har! Not surprised! I still haven't seen a physical PS3 unit (or even a Wii unit either) and 360 units have vanished from display also so what gives? Saved my money an bought a budget PC title instead.

"Sony is also bullish, reporting that more than A$20 million worth of PS3s had been preordered prior to launch" how about numbers rather then money. we all know that to get a PS3 here in Aust, you will need to spend at least AU$1000!!!! also, pre-orders does not mean sales

What a terrible launch. Sony really needed to sink this one to make up for slow sales everywhere else, but i guess all the bad news put people off. If this trend keeps up the PS3 will go the way of the Dreamcast I expect.

I find it interesting that we are being punished because we are smaller then America "Mr Ephraim said in an interview last month the higher price was justified because factors such as Australia's currency exchange rate and small population size when compared with the US led to a higher cost of doing business."

"Team_man_pig Console wars will NOT be won when a system launches. Being the more expensive of the two obviously at launch it wouldn't have sold as much. Not everyone gets their console at launch. 360 might have broke records, but it's not hot property in au right now is it?" Yeah, of course it's not too hot ATM because PS3 is the flavor of the month. Though interest in the 360 here has seemed rather constant over the last year, so wait a few months and then neither of them will be the flavor so interest will remain equal-ish. I think it should be expected that sales for both PS3 and 360 are going to be rather equal, over the time it's been released (obviously the 360 will stay ahead in sale as it's been out for a year) as in several years time when the price is cheaper most gamers will have both and people who only have 1 will likely do so only to get that consoles sweet exclusives, like Halo 3 for 360 and MGS:4 for the PS3. As for the wii, well I think it's sales are going to be higher then both because it's cheaper, not to say it'll be better, but it should sell better for that fact alone.

Compared to the Wii and 360 launches, those numbers are very poor. That is what happens when you charge $1000 for a console and up to $120 for each game. The price if compared to the US should of been $200 cheaper.

$20mil equets to 20 000 console people. Fanboys stop acting like Australia is a big gaming market cause it's not. We only have about 20 mil people here. I know a lot of people who are excited about the console, thank you. 360 doesn't even sell well down here so don't even bring that **** up. If someone, like me, chooses to spend a 1000 AU dollars on a console, it's their choice not yours. Some of us down under don't fall for M$ **** as easily as you Americans.

I think the only problem was the price point, but if people had some money to spare, good on them for buying it! It's a good investment. There will be plenty of good games and exclusives for the PS3 in the future.

To Sydroost ... what a load of crap ... fanboys from both sides swamp each others forums ... Remember how many septics there were and people complaining when the xbox 360 launched in Oz ! ... Lets face it ... Sony has recently done more to tarnish its own reputation with the release of this console than Microsoft had with the xbox 360 .... Price justifications to me prove to be amongst the most puzzling ... combined with the various productive issues that have clouded the PS3 [though i believe this was a tactic that Sony deliberately employed to overprice their own console] ... The backwards compatibility is another major issue badly handled ... Sony's P.R team really needs assistance ... BTW ... Blue-Ray has shown signs of winning the next generation DVD war ... if that occurs and no steep purchase of Sony PS3's occur ... Sony will be out of the console race for a long time ...

I worked at the launch last night and we recieved 6 customers, this launch was dissapointing to say the least, and no matter what the ceo of myers says, the ps3 will not out sell the Wii or 360, we had 40 ppl at the 360 launch, and all 40 bought consoles!

Why is it everytime there is a news story about the PS3 the microsoft fanboys flood the message boards. Yet if you visit the XBOX news storys there is no sony fanboys there trying to dis the microsoft brands. It happens everytime and i am so sick of it go destroy XBOX news stories and stop flooding ours. If you have a legitament point make it but dont go on and on about ur how u think ur XBOX pwns. No one cares most ppl are gamers looking to play the latest games no matter what console it is on and who is selling it.
