This. I'm scared to think of how much of both the development & marketing costs of this title will be...it'll be much, much worse than games like Tomb Raider, Max Payne 3, & Resident Evil 6.
EA executive producer claims developer headcount for upcoming stealth-action game is "nearly" 1,000; Ubisoft declines to comment.
Electronic Arts executive producer Giordano Contestabile recently tweeted, "Assassin's Creed IV is made by 7 studios and (I hear) nearly 1,000 people. Is this new new AAA?"
Asked to comment on this figure, a Ubisoft representative told GameSpot, "Ubisoft does not traditionally comment on developer headcount."
Ubisoft employs more than 7,450 people across the world, including 6,250 dedicated to game production. If Contestabile's claim is accurate, 16 percent of all Ubisoft production talent is working on Assassin's Creed: Black Flag.
The eight studios working on Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag are the company's outfits in Montreal, Singapore, Sofia, Annecy, Kiev, Quebec, Bucharest, and Montpellier.
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag launches October 29. It is in development for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC, Wii U, and "other" next-generation platforms. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.
Remember Capcom bosting about how many people were working on Resident Evil 6. That game after finishing it, clearly showed that to many people were throwing ideas in it left, right and center. To many chefs working on the same pie !
it probably has that many people because its coming out on 6 consoles and they have to come out with a version for current gen and next gen.
EA has no business in the industry with their business tactics and deception and has no right to comment who is doing what with their games.
Well, I suppose to make a game as big as Assassin's Creed on a yearly basis, you need things like this. Still, it certainly helps to explain the kind of schizophrenic throw it all in feel the last few games have had, especially ACIII.
While I'm happy to see a lot of folks working, I'd also like them not to all be working on one project. It's a bit hard to believe Ubisoft wouldn't be better off in the long run if those 8 separate studios were making 8 separate games, and they took AC off the annual production schedule.
If this is true.... please allow me to skip the credits at the end. AC3 took forever to with the credit roll.... I actually left the game, cleaned the house and came back to see the credits still rolling!
Well someone is jealous they can't do the same.. Also 1000 person doesn't mean the core development team.
Well, not that big a deal. Grand Theft Auto 4 was worked on by over 1,000 people. It was a (about) 100 million dollar game. GAMES are ART.
This is good. More people with jobs is a good thing. Although as a developer I feel sorry for the project managers if this is true. A coordination nightmare.
As long as we get more focused iterations of the game this time around, Ubisoft will have nailed the production process for video game development. I mean, they must've spent just under a year in pre production, which is brilliant.

Didn't AC3 like practically just come out? Now this one is coming out in October?! The series is going downhill fast.
@adamska156 they have separate dev teams that are staggered so they have time to work on major installations in the series. The team that was primary in AC 1 had 5 years to work on AC 3, the team that was primary on AC2 has had 5 years to work on black flag. Sure theres some serious repetition but the games always get better, except maybe between revelations and brotherhood.
@adamska156 they are being released exactly 1 year apart just like every other one they've ever made.
Having that many studios all working on the same game could lead to a very uneven experience in Assassins Creed 4. Lets hope Ubisoft figures it out.
In further reports released, it's been confirmed that 990 of those 1000 are assigned to developing a new DRM system.

I dont know why people want small group work on AC, the more the better, Not mention the sucked every year with the graphic and the bugs, They realized that they are doin it wrong so they want to give us the best AC, and dont forget its a pirate this time so they want us to give us the feeling when you are in the see fighting pirate, just like in the real life, OOH i almost forgot, 1000 means the game will be hear faster.

If they really need that many studios and like 1000 people to make a game then they really have to make it at least as good as ACII or better. I wonder how many people worked on ACIII, because it was not that impressive overall... Quality-wise it's been downhill after Brotherhood and this one is not looking good... Hopefully Ubisoft manages to surprise me this time around...
@MJV1989 the amount of devs wont change the out come of the story or the detail.
