All ESPN video content now on Xbox Live

Sports network's application adds all ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPNU, Buzzer Beater, and Goal Line programming for those with Gold subscription and participating cable affiliate.

Sports fans who were less than pleased with the programming available through Xbox Live's ESPN application are in luck. Microsoft has announced that Xbox Live's ESPN video streaming app has been updated with WatchESPN support. This means all ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPNU, Buzzer Beater, and Goal Line programming will be available.

Programming now available through ESPN on Xbox Live includes ESPN's flagship show SportsCenter, as well as other news-heavy programs like SportsNation and Mike & Mike in the Morning. In addition, the new ESPN Xbox Live app will allow users to live-stream ESPN's Monday Night Football each week during the NFL season.

The ESPN app for Xbox Live does come with two caveats. First, as was the case with the original ESPN Xbox Live app, users must hold an Xbox Live Gold subscription to access the content. Second, users must be a subscriber to one of ESPN's participating cable affiliates. These include Bright House Networks, Comcast Xfinity, Midcontinent Communications, Time Warner Cable, and Verizon FIOS.

Lastly, Microsoft announced that Xbox SmartGlass support for ESPN, NBA, and SportsPicks Xbox Live apps will be available in December. More information will be shared as launch approaches.

More crap on the Xbox I'll never use.  They'll probably hide the games somewhere else now, so I have to watch ESPN just to find them.

Guessing this is only in the States and won't be available here in the UK?

@neogeta8 frigging well hope it will! still not enough for me to relinquish my NFL game-pass next season unfortunately

I just use it to watch games I missed and highlights, but it's still good to hear they are improving the service.

@bizuit They say it in the article. "Microsoft has announced that Xbox Live's ESPN video streaming app has been updated with WatchESPN support."

Why would I watch ESPN on my Xbox if I already get it through my cable company anyway?? Stupid. It's the same thing with their Fios service, pretty useless because you already need to have the service to use it on your Xbox.

@mingolo Not exactly.  I have no television service what so ever, and the ESPN app is my primary form of watching TV.

TacticaI

@mingolo You can use your Xbox in a different room instead of forking over $5-10 (I forget which one) per month to rent their HD boxes. The bigger issue being that with FiOS on Xbox you aren't going to get all the channels you're paying for...not even close I think.

Pyrosa

@TacticaI  @mingolo Exactly.  I had four cable boxes and two 360s a year ago; now down to two of each, and I'm likely to eliminate another set top box soon.

This is much better, I'll have to give it another chance.

Why doesnt ESPN have DirecTV on their list of affiliates to use this god forsaken service? its 2013 now...

Pyrosa
Pyrosa

@YouVandal3 You should ask DirecTV that... The broadband & satellite carriers each maintain their own contracts with each content network.  In other words, DirecTV is preventing this -- not ESPN.

Good stuff.  The ESPN app just keeps getting better, and the Comcast integration is gradually improving.

If I can get MNF by just paying $50 for a whole year, then maybe I'll renew my gold membership.  but if i STILL need to pay for cable ($60/month + 50/month for internet) and internet, then it's pointless.  anyone know for sure if it works with just internet, but not cable tv?

I have Cox btw, and the ESPN app and ESPN3.com work using my cable internet. I just dont pay for cable tv, its a waste

sega_boy78
sega_boy78

@Talldude80 agreed! cable/sat are a waste. I just have antenna for DTV HD channel reception and ESPN app on Xbox. Antenna alone gives me CBS, Fox, NBC, ABC, CW, Univison HD, a local SEC HD network, weather channel, music channel, 4 PBS channels and more! Add that to a custom built PC w/ DTV tuner card, running Win 7 and there's my DVR. All free and full HD!

@Sgthombre Then you'd be surprised. Most of the hardcore gamers I knew in college have nothing but sports games now. My cousins only ever bought sports games. When I told them they could watch ESPN on their consoles they were elated.

Sorry, but there is a huge market for sports and sports related content on consoles. Denying that is just silly.

Can't play games all the time.  When I'm not, I have given this a peek... it's pretty decent.

If you like college football, this is actually a pretty good app.  It's nice to catch a great game (going back a weekend or a few years even).  I'm using it at some point here to watch the Oregon/Stanford game, which I missed last weekend.

@tgwolf dude, Microsoft has always said the 360 is an ENTERTAINMENT system. games, movies, music. Nintendo has netflix and hulu on the 3DS and WiiU. same for Ps3 and Vita. You hate those too?

Simulator_Shock
Simulator_Shock

@mrzero1982pt2  @tgwolf Except that you don't have to pay for Xbox Live just to access those apps on your PS3/3DS/Wii U.

mrzero1982pt2
mrzero1982pt2

@Simulator_Shock  @tgwolf um, i pay 7 bucks a month for netflix. same for hulu. so when i cut off my xbox and fire up my ipod, i am watching netflix and hulu and paying the same price. same for my vita when i get it friday. so yeah, you DO PAY FOR THOSE SERVICES.

@mrzero1982pt2  @tgwolf "Another epic fail?" Am I reading the same article as you? If so, and you think Microsoft adding MORE & BETTER services is a bad thing, then you belong with Nintendo. They seem to neglect and ignore the needs & wants of their customers so you'll fit right in. As for the rest of us, we appreciate additions and enhancements to the service. That's kinda why it's the best online service of any console btw.

It's how it always has been with the ESPN 3 content.  Notice how when you have it booted up it says "Powered by *insert cable company here*"?

My cable company, Cablevision, is on the fore front of technology in the cable industry. But for some reason they won't make a deal with Disney, who owns ESPN, to get access to this ESPN content on XBL.
