Remedy franchise dev head Oskari Hakkinen says new psycho-thriller game won't be a sequel or DLC; price, platforms TBA.
Yesterday, signs seemed to indicate that Remedy and Microsoft would be teaming on Alan Wake 2, when the LinkedIn profile of a previsualization artist name-checked the unannounced project. That mystery has lasted all of a day, as Remedy confirmed to Joystiq this morning that it will indeed return to its psychological thriller, although not in such a straightforward way as a sequel.
"Now that the cat is out of the bag, we owe it to you and the fans to shed a little more light before we get the chance to officially show them what the guys have been up to," said Remedy franchise development chief Oskari Hakkinen. "Fans of the franchise will be excited to learn that yes, more Wake is coming!"
Hakkinen went on to note that the new title will not be a sequel to the original Alan Wake, nor will it be a new batch of downloadable content. As to the exact nature of the game, fans of the franchise will have to wait until Remedy is ready to make its official announcement, he said.
"We are really excited about this project which a slice of our team has been working on for the last months," Hakkinen also noted. "It's something that'll definitely give more to the Wake fans out there, but just as importantly, this installment will also give an opportunity for players who aren't familiar with the franchise to finally jump on board."
Fortunately, the game's reveal will likely be arriving soon, as Remedy expects to ship the project in fall 2011. Interestingly, Hakkinen also said that platforms and pricing have not yet been announced. The original Alan Wake was first announced for the Xbox 360 and PC, though the desktop edition was later placed on indefinite hold.

@ iBlackOut_Q8: So why are you posting here? I'm sure all the people who did enjoy Alan Wake won't lose sleep over the fact that you "don't care".
I agree with @DarkCrisis 100% this guys excuse why Alan Wake was not on the PC is a pathetic one oh we are a small company BLA BLA BLA focus on just one platform BLA BLA BLA Microsoft's excuse why they canceled Alan Wake for the PC was even more pathetic oh the game will look better on a HD tv then a computer monitor. The XBOX360 is not better then the PC it is all about money and Microsoft does have much deeper pockets makes Microsoft the better choice and is a influence to developers so this is kissing up to Microsoft money. Disappointed as I was Alan Wake did not make me run out and buy a XBOX360.
This better make it to the PC or PS3. Better yet, package it together with a port of Alan Wake to the PC, the platform the original should've released on. I'm not about to get a crappy 360 for just these games.
I did not know this news got posted this past Monday and this is great news cause I loved the first one and I hope the new game is just as great. @plaintomato yeah I gave it pretty positive review as well.
Took them six years to make the first game. This has "Pushed back release date" written all over it.
My hope is they're going to pull a Fable on this one and release it for PC with extra content. Would fit the statement, and my wishes, quite perfectly (:
@punksterdaddy @Sigil-otaku lulz. You guys really really misread my comment. Or the way I worded it really sucked. You just have to pay close attention to the punctuation. If it is still unclear, I have played Alan Wake and I dropped a very positive review for it - that should be clear.
After reading all these positive comments, I think i'm going to have to pick up a copy of Alan Wake. Saw it the other day at BestBuy for only $29.99.
If it's not a PC version then I predict it to be Alan Wake 4GB DDR2 Ram and Alan Wake EVGA GTX 580 usb connectable devices to make the game look as it intended to be.
@indecident Oh aye, that could be a story line there with that female copper? I can't remember her name now either but what we heard of her back story, it could be a nice little plot on its own perhaps? You never know, it could also be Barry but I personally would get fed up playing him while listening to his constant whining as he displays his 15 year old jacket with christmas tree lights hanging off it! lol Nah, if not Alice then most likely it will be a new character?
Alan Wake was a most amazing exsclusive on xb360 of all time and unique exspirience that u can ever prove that announce of Alan Wake 2 coming up soon make me enjoy because the end of previos installament wasn't clear like it should be i very excited about may be we'll see the light on 2012 i'm nOt Get enough!
@plaintomato I presume that you have never played Alan Wake before? The reason I say that is there is no basis for comparison between this and things like COD, Halo, Homefront etc? Yes I agree with you on the fact about all them games being the same military style yawnarama as each other, but Alan Wake is not even close to any of them? If Alan Wake was in that league then I for one would not have bought it just shortly after release? In fact I am starting to wonder where you even got the comparison from, since there is no review, demo, footage of any kind that should make any body think they are the same, I mean its not even a First Person Shooter? I am not looking to have a go at you and act all fanboy on the matter, I just can't see ANY connection? Come to think about it, the only thing that has any basis in your post is that it is a GAME! ...and there the comparison begins and ENDS! I would really recommend that you should give the game a go and I believe that you will be pleasantly surprised?
ALAN WAKE was a game that reminded me once again that there are still some great quality titles around in an era where the industry is filled with lame games .........
This is really good news! I wonder if the story will follow the original writer that went missing 30 years earlier? Then again, we do know the outcome of that story already as was discovered in the first "Alan Wake." It could run along the path of Alice Wake instead, maybe? Whatever the path the new story will follow, it is bound to be right up my street with twists and turns at every opportunity?
multiconsole owner FTW. Anyways I think the reson the first sold so bad is the 360 fanboys were too busy playing there galos and call of dutys. With the PSN being down its give me a chance too play it and I'm really enjoying it and the game looks really pretty sitting right next Heavy Rain & LA Noire (Ps3 version of it that is) will look good sitting next too both of them
This game is one of the best games I've ever played , I don't know why it's very underrated ,people should play it ,not spending time on some overrated games like CoD .
Alan Wake was an awesome game, even though u could tank through it within a few hours it had a real cinematic quality to it. Hope the next iteration is just as good.
This article says the followin: Dammit you broke our secrecy, so now wait while we tell you absolutely nothing except 'it's a sequel but not a sequel'. They should have just kept quiet and kept up the suspense.
@mkeezay22 As much as you think it'd do them favours to lose exclusives left right and centre the truth is it wouldn't. Gamers would notice there isn't enough exclusives and not buy the console or move to others. Why would they want a situation where when they release there next console no one buys it because they think they can get every exclusive elsewhere if they just wait? I like my 360 but I'm jumping ship if this stuff continues (well I have all systems so nowhere to jump really but it'll just gather dust) because it's lost exclusives to PC (Fable, Bioshock, Gears of war 1 etc.) and lost others to the PS3 (Mass effect 2, Ninja gaiden 2, Star ocean and other timed excluisve RPG) so I'm getting pretty tired of it losing exclusives and having little to make it worth while. Like I said I still love my 360 mainly for the older JRPG like Tales of Vesperia, Lost odyssey etc. and I love my Halo and Alan Wake along with Deadly Premonition but I don't see why every other systems fans seems to want everything on 360 and not just buy a 360 to support it?
just give us the pc version, its probably half done anyway before MS pulled their exclusive BS. I say bring Alan Wake to PC,I mean its run its course on 360 so why not put it on pc and give it to more gamers and also put up its notoriety which would help sell sequels and hopefully make MS realize that making a PC version will only help with brand recognition, add a little extra $ into remedys hands and encourage more cross platform games. Max Payne 3 anyone! - how about on 360,PC, and of course PS3 just so we all get what we should've to begin with in my opinion.
@plaintomato In what regard? Just because it has guns doesn't mean it's like those games as it's not. Military styled mp? There wasn't any MP as it was a single player only story driven game with a horror approach and it had a more unique mechanic with the torches and lights being used. If you don't like shooters that's one thing but this is not a run and gun shooter like the rest so don't be ridiculous and stop showing you have no knowledge of the game. A single player story driven horror game which happens to have guns is not the same as military themed FPS. I'm guessing there's lots of Sony fanboys in here considering there's too many asking it come to PS3 (yes we get it, you all apparrently only want 1 game on xbox 360 despite every game having an influx of PS3 fans saying they want the game) but why don't people just play the games on there own system and stop crying for others? I'm never on a PS3 board (helps that I have a PS3 mind you) saying I'm desperate for every PS3 exclusive to come to 360.
I couldn't care less if it is x360 exclusive or multiplatform (only 10 years old care like steelmouth). But since they are not clear about this game, i would keep my hopes low.
really wish these guys were making max payne 3. anyway, this semi-announcement makes me nervous. not a sequel, not DLC, so what then? hopefully a crappy XBLA "game" like dead space ignition, or any interactive comic of the sort. maybe a movie? i liked the live action mini prologue that aired right up to the games release.
I got it cheap once I heared it kept on winning prices. I just had tos ee what it was about.... and WOW what a fantastic experience. Purely on gameplay the game falls a bit short but the totalpackage is amazing. People say gaming is not about great graphics or a good story but that is only true because these things weren't possible when gaming started. Great graphics set the tone for a fantastic atmosphere that suits the thrilling storyline of Alan Wake. It is a full blown thriller/mystery experience unlike any other due to its interactive nature. But I wonder how good a sequel could be, in its genres sequels are rarely good..
Should be good. The dlc did nothing to answer any questions about the ending, so I hope that this will.
I really like Alan Wake, theres not many 360 exclusives i enjoy but Alan Wake is definetelly ones that i will continue to follow.
@_Silent_Jay_ that means nothing. Microsoft doesn't own the IP so Remedy can do what they want with it. The fact that they haven't said what it is nor what console it's on only boosts my suspicions of it going mulitplatform.
Alan Wake was such an amazing game. I'm glad to hear it did well enough for them to want to keep it going.
i'm a big fan of remedy and i like everything they do no matter what it is, because they are original in what they do.
