Alan Wake arriving early in Europe

By Tamoor Hussain

The Xbox 360-exclusive action game is now set to hit store shelves in on May 14; North American release still May 18.

Alan Wake will be released in Europe a full week ahead of its original release date, Microsoft has announced. The Remedy-developed psychological action thriller was originally scheduled for release in Europe on May 21 but has been moved forward to May 14. The game is still set for release on May 18 in North America.

Alan Wake tells the story of a best-selling author who retreats with his wife to a small secluded town in hopes of recovering from a severe creativity block. His self-imposed rehabilitation is cut short when his wife disappears and the town of Bright Falls becomes a dangerous realisation of his latest work.

Alan Wake was announced at the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo as an Xbox 360 and PC title but has had a number of setbacks throughout its development. Also, after hints of a delay to the PC version, earlier this year Microsoft confirmed that it had been put on indefinite hold.

I hate these exclusives. Not because I don't grant console players their pleasure, but because I want to share in that pleasure without having to buy a console :(

What's with all the anger? Looks like some Euro gamers are dealing with superiority complex

Oy...it's maddening to see comments like "this game should be cancelled because I'M not interested in it." Well who are you? if you're not interested, then don't buy it, and let the millions who ARE interested enjoy the game

I don't have any interest in Alan Wake. I can't understand what all the fuss is about. It looked amazing back in 2006. Now it just looks dated. This game should've been cancelled years ago.

It always happens, trust me. I don't know why, but it's silly really, considering they get 95% of games first.

@Gamesmasterx I didn't see any "angry Americans" Complaining. why are you trying to incite a fight when this should be something happy for you? Calm yourself young padawan, so full of rage you are!!

@Syphadeus i think the issue of were the game is released mostly depend on who owns the rights to the game as opposed to who developed it but yes it sucks to get a game developed in your backyard last

Roll on the angry americans, why aren't they here yet? Every time it happens when we get a game first, what makes you more important? Size? It's like saying a 400kg man is more important than a 90kg man, I don't see how.

Man, I gotta play this and Red Dead Redemption, both I've been waiting for for YEARS haha

let me guess americans are gonna moan about us getting it first when they usually get everything first.

The gaming industy fails to appreciate PC gamers anymore. It's sad because they have always been thier for developers.

@gamer082009 Great you have recognised this, Im British and it has really annoyed me in the past when the U.S get games first. Think its just coz you guys I believe have a Tuesday Release day for games and we in GB have a Friday. Thus leaving 2-3days which is usually correct, Say you get them on the 18th we would get it 20th. But nice that you as an American realise it. They should just release them the same time for the whole world then no one will complain.

i know this sounds like wishful thinking, but i have a feeling they're saying it's an exclusive to get 360s sold. i reckon at some point it will come out on PC cause it's too big an audience to avoid.

maximo

YEah but AMerican games are usually relatively mediocre compared to British/European games

gamer082009

OK, so the US misses by a week? That's wrong...but fair since we always get games first for the most part.

Syphadeus

@steelmouth Yes I guess us Europeans can feel lucky about this. At the same time though, the game is, after all, developed in Europe - is it really that much to ask that we might get it first for once? It always seems that even though games are developed here, as a region, we are still not the first to get them! Crackdown 2 for instance, we get it last! I mean, even Australia and Asia get it before us and it's UK developed. Stupid.

I've a feeling publishers recently have been testing the waters of releasing in areas outside North America in hopes that review sources that don't normally get access to review games first will be eager to get their reviews out first and in that excitement give the material a higher review score. I thought as much when that happened for Dante's Inferno, except it seemed to have the opposite effect with respect to critics, I also notice review sources outside North America usually give games lower scores in general, and I think most North American reviewers get lazy and base all their reviews off other reviews and in that laziness Dante's Inferno got rather bland scores. I wouldn't doubt that such actions could happen again with Alan Wake... but I'm very interested, I'll probably get it and form my own opinions about it.

There just isn't enough of these kind of games coming out anymore... RE has been turned into an action game, SH has bee turned into I don't know what and AITD is a mess.... for all the nay sayers here, ... not every game has to be a shooter with multiplayer.... God, it seems like 90% of all the big titles are shooters.. games like Siren, Heavy Rain and this that rely on the creep factor and/or suspense and NOT the shooting, are far and few between... if you don't like it, who cares? don't comment... but there are still a whole bunch of us that like a variety of games, not just multiplayer shooters... I give the devs credit for going against the grain and doing something different.... and yeah, same day as RDR? good .... I love summers with more than 2 or 3 games to play.... this summer we have a boat load.

yeah, i agree. it sucks that RDR was pushed to the same day as alan wake. although i have no interest in rdr anymore, i cant wonder what stupid exec decided to launch it on the same day as another hugely anticipated title. fail on his/her part.

calanorn Posted Apr 7, 2010 6:38 pm GMT "On a seperate note why is this still tagged in the pc section news since we got screwed out of the game." Because even though you are accutely aware of the 'Indefinate Hold' scenario, GS provide you with a oppertunity to come here to p**s & moan about it.

arriving early? wasnt this delayed like 10 times?!

Stabby

By the US retail standard, games are released on Tuesdays, while for Europe it's Fridays. Most games are released within the same working week. It has nothing to do with regional issues or bias. In this case it's being released on a Friday in the week before the next, the US still the same after. Japanese games on the other hand are just plain odd when releasing in Europe. THOSE are too far between US releases.

Now I won't have Red Dead Redemption and Alan Wake arriving on my doorstep the same day: thank god.

for me the bigger news story here is that the game will be released early not later and that's a bigger welcome change that the constant delays now lets hope the game lives up-to expectations because am get it end of may if it does

Well, if it was coming out for PC, I would say "I hope they don't cock up the whole "episodic content" thing". But now that it isn't, I kinda hope they do...

I was really looking forward to play this game on pc, got very upset when they put this game on "indefinite hold". That was regardless to pc gamers.
