Id-inspired team-based shooter now coming to next-gen consoles; Nerve Software, Z-Axis taking on porting duties.
This morning, PC gamers woke up to learn that another of their prized exclusives is being ported to next-generation consoles. Activision and id Software have announced that Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is now in development for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. No release date or rating was included in the announcement.
The original Enemy Territory: Quake Wars was honored as the Best Shooter of E3 2006 by GameSpot. It is being developed by Splash Damage under the supervision of id Software and is tentatively set to ship sometime during the second quarter of the year. Nerve Software, which developed the Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil expansion pack for Xbox and PC, will handle the 360 version under id's guidance. The PlayStation 3 edition is being ported by Z-Axis, which developed last year's critically drubbed X-Men: The Official Game, under similar supervision.
Though some PC devotees will undoubtedly see the console ports as heresy, Splash Damage creative director Paul "Loki" Wedgwood thinks they're a good thing. "I think given that lots of people play shooters on consoles anyway, and they're quite happy with the control schemes," he told GameSpot. "If we're able to improve that further, that's an added benefit...[because] it would just be a shame for all of those console players to not get a chance to play because they don't have a PC."
As the name implies, Quake Wars shares the setting of id's Quake series. It sees humanity locked in an interplanetary life-or-death struggle with the Strogg, a Frankenstein-ish race of zombie-like cyborgs. Its emphasis is on online multiplayer action that pits teams of players against each other in Battlefield-esque conflicts. For more on the game, consult GameSpot's previous coverage of the PC Quake Wars.
(sorry for the long middle potion, Gamespot didn't split it up like I had it) I would just like to give a little input from a recent PC to PS3 convert. I am 21, was a PC gamer since I was 10 for the sole reason of FPS games. I have owned a SNES, PS, PS2, and XBOX but sold my PS2 and XBOX because I rarely played them because I did not like the controller scheme for shooters and all the other games I wanted to play were on console and PC. A little while back I sold my gaming rig and just recently got a PS3 and couldn't be happier. I have spent thousands of dollars on building systems and it's fun. But the time has come with work and school I don't game as much but am still an avid gamer. Instead of building a new PC to play games like Crysis I opted for a PS3 and 1080p monitor, 360 was not even in the running because of the specs of the PS3 and the games coming out. Really, one of the main reasons for choosing PS3 is because of UT3 having native K/M support. I know that games like CoD4 and Resistance (which I both own) can use a M/K but have not yet gotten a USB K/M because using a controller for FPS on consoles is actually fun. I used to be just like you other people who couldn't stand using a controller but you get used to it. It is a little harder but I like a challenge. But looking at the PS3 from a PC perspective, they are quite similar but the PS3 can't do as much. The power of the PS3 can make games that look just as good or if not better than PC titles. The PS3 supports K/M out-of-the-box, but the support for games is only a few, but still a few. But now instead of worrying about driver issues, hardware issues, I can just pop in a game and play and not have to worry about a thing, besides how the game runs. Also, when playing online games with a console everyone is on the same playing field hardware wise. When I was a PC gamer I would always hear people complain about the reason they were getting fragged because they were running under 30FPS, but, in reality it's kinda the truth. When I sold my gaming rig, i had a crappy Dell laying around, when I was playing CS 1.6 (really the only game that would run) i was getting killed more than fragging more(other way around on my old rig) because of my FPS(which is kinda crappy). With a console you don't have to worry about this because everyone is running the same hardware. So, as you can see the PS3 can produce games that can use a K/M control scheme with no problems, the developer just has to program for it. You will probably start seeing RTS games on the PS3 that support K/M because this is the other genre where you really need a K/M to play it well. When I had my gaming rig I did play the QW demo and believe it's a solid online title that deserves to be on a console because it's a great game. When looking at PC's to consoles you have to look at the whole picture and look into the future. Like when I decided on the PS3 I was looking into the future, like most, if not all FPS titles released in the near future will have native K/M support and, hardware and optical media of the console is ready for anything that gets thrown at it. There are already a couple games that are going to be released only on the PS3 because the developers did not have the power and space needed to make the game with the 360. As you can see the PS3 is a very powerful and diverse console that has the balls to compete with PC gaming. And with K/M support for FPS titles I think you will see people just like me flee to the PS3 from their PC.
Woo, this game is going to be fun. I played the demo and driving the flying ships is hard....hope they make it easier for PS3 and Xbox 360.
Take a look at this amazing gameplay-demo: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=1485451687
As a PC gamer, i see this as good news... i won't explain why so i don't start a flame war but you guys have fun playing this game on your consoles...
jncho2--------The only reason the PS3 version is being ported is because ms has quake as exclusive...........by absolutely NO MEANS is the 360 any where NEAR superior to the PS3.
This game will totally 100% be better on PC.....Just look at Quake 4 but this game has better graphics, texture and the maps are much bigger...DOWNGROUND for the consoles ;)
Exciting, considering my PC is getting pretty outdated and my 360... isn't. I truly wish I could buy it for PC and have it run just as well as on my 360 but I hardly have enough to upgrade. Poor college kid FTW!
mouse/nostromo setup FTW!! im with Artofshreddin. IF you have a good PC setup, then we are comparable, if not better then the console gaming systems at times. Dont forget, PCs can upgrade ALOT easier then your Consoles.....btw, im getting a 360 with in the coming weeks. This is coming from a console/PC gamer. There are crossbreeds ou there ya know.
nevereathim says Well add PSP and I'm in wtf r u talking about the psp has like a 32mb graphics card omg its talking about the consels and the pc's not the stupit usless handhelds
oh yeah vmfstorm.. here read this http://www.beyond3d.com/interviews/etqw/ it's more than just making it an outdoor game in comparison to doom/quake. It's more internal than that, to opitmize it for more than top of the line systems and give it the awesome looks it has. :) I can't wait! \m/
madderx, i know what i'm talking about. Compare quake IV, prey, oblivion, fear, battlefield 2 and the pc versions look better.. just cuz the 360 is "next gen" doesn't mean its better than a pc, sure some games the pc and 360 do look nearly identical ie: NFS: carbon and call of duty. It just depends on your system if you have a crappy pc thats why it looks bad. But as i've said earlier... to each their own. I get sick of the flaming cuz some of us like pc games, we're not saying we're better or anything, just some games DO look better on a good computer. That's all I'm saying man.. chill out. Just like controllers, to me they suck (thats my opinion) they aren't as accurate or responsive like my mouse/nostromo setup. if i do a driving game i use my logitech momo setup for the same reason i don't like controllers.. it's my preference
artofshreddin you dont know what your talking about. since when are pc graphics better than the 360? and since when do the controllers suck? and no, they arent the same games as on the console. half of the time they are actually either a little or alot different. as godzilla said, its all about peoples preferences.
it would have to be modded for terrain, doom and quake are mostly indoors, no dirt, streets or tanks are really needed (and yes i played quake and there is a tank part but its only 20 mins long)
Id wouldn't ditch their own engine, they designed the doom engine. There'd be no way they'd take their competitors unreal engine. The engine for Quake Wars was heavily modified, especially for texturing the terrain. Screen shots are amazing for quake wars. I'm looking forward to it
Everybody has their preferences but I could never get used to the mouse and keyboard usage in games.I don't think pc gaming is dying though.I think Quake wars will do well on PS3 and 360.I say the more games available the better.Maybe they will ditch the Doom engine and use the Unreal.
LOL FPS harder on a console? hmmm harder cuz the controls suck. how is fps on a pc confusing?!? they're the same game as on the console, just different controls.. and better graphics. but to each their own. The flame wars are stupid. I'm going back to battlefield 2142..cyaz
i really dont see the point in arguing about which platform it will play better on and if pc gaming is dying. to tell you the truth, why should anyone even care, any fps imo is better on a console basically because it is actually quite harder and less confusing whereas other games such as MMORPG play better on the pc. stop yapping about it and actually play the games.
Yes i would prefer the PC version. PC Gaming is not "dying". Microsoft and their "Games For Windows" marketing campaign is going to work well. For example, Microsoft will set up Display Machines in shops, just like for consoles. And better advertising on TV & Internet.
The constant barrage of "PC gaming is dying" comments is really getting old. I've said it before in other posts here, but PC gamers choose to game on their computers for a simple reason, we feel its the best gaming platform. In my eyes it is, to others its their ps3 or 360, to each their own. I cant stand controllers, my logitech g5 mouse and nostromo are my weapons of choice. And am more accurate with that than a controller. We choose to game on pc's for the freedom to create/download mods/extra levels created by other gamers/myself. Deviot, said exactly the truth about the "having to upgrade pc every two years" i just built a new computer a month ago to replace one i've used since 2000. And i've gamed on that till now, just lil upgrades as he said did it. It does suck that it's being ported to consoles cuz it'll probably delay the pc release, just like half life 2 episode 2 is being delayed for their port. But good for consolers getting to check out games designed for the pc, even though the pc will have more players available per map than any of the two "next gen systems" Hopefully we can play against them someday, maybe it'll quit the pc bashing and console bashing. OH yeah, i'm a diehard pc gamer for life. (sorry guys consoles haven't sold me yet... only one interesting me is the wii honestly). and i've owned a commodore 64, an XT, intel p233mhz, ps1, xbox, 1.5ghz, and now intel quadcore pc. i sold both ps1 and xbox cuz the games bored me
lol yes the pc version will be better and yes it will have more players on server and no pc gaming is not dying this is because every console game announced has been or is now not a pc game stop flaming!!
pc gamers are dead, well wot u know consolers sayin pc gamers are dying, have to say that the only dyin there will be is when consolers meet pc gamers head on in a few games that are coming out soon!!
This is going to rock on the 360 also I love that guys Idea- make the humans PS3 and the strogg 360's How kewl would that be,instead of flame wars - Quake wars
Though no one in the console community has, just watch if they decided to make a mouse/keyboard (which I'm hoping SOMEONE would do) then PC gaming would lose even more of a fan base. But still PC gaming will never die...
Intresting, Well PC gameing has for more advantages with RTS's game and FPS's and RPG's then the game stytem. Arrg to bad there are not to many game exclucivly for the PC anymore and everything is either multiplatform or game system specific. Kids these days are to dumb to know how to update there computer so the just play games systems lol jk.
PC gaming but it is not mainstream enough anymore to dominate the market. The business of video games has grown to the point that development costs are high and consoles can replenish the coffers of the companies laying out the cash for the production of the games. PC Gaming has NEVER been mainstream. Development costs are high BECAUSE of the consoles, which is why PC games always cost much less yet look better.
PC gamers are a dying breed. All kids growing up are playing consoles and few will turn to the "dark side" that is PC gaming. Just kidding there are a lot of advantages to PC gaming but it is not mainstream enough anymore to dominate the market. The business of video games has grown to the point that development costs are high and consoles can replenish the coffers of the companies laying out the cash for the production of the games.
"If we're able to improve that further, that's an added benefit...[because] it would just be a shame for all of those console players to not get a chance to play because they don't have a PC." What an utterly idiotic thing to say. I don't see anyone ever going "it would be a shame for all of those PC gamers to not get a chance to play because they don't have a next-gen console and an HDTV" with regards to all the console exclusives.
the good thing about id is they will never compromise the pc version of the game for the console version. They make the pc versions first then port them to consoles as well as they can.
I've always been an omnivorous gamer. I grew up playing both Computer, and Console games. First an Atari2600, then a Commodore 64, Then an NES, A Super NES, then a Pentium 133, then an N64, a PS1, Then I got TBird toward the end of my previous PC's lifespan. I also got a Gamecube, and a Dreamcast around then. And I've even found some other Golden Age consoles along the way. But I also have my current Rig, and a Nintendo Wii. I'll probably get the other two at some point. But through it all there have been Exclusives, and ports. A lot of people forget how many 2600, NES, SMS, even Super NES games found ports onto 80's, and even 90's Home Computers, some of which were better than the console version. And vice versa. Folks this isn't exactly SHOCKING news. At least not to those of us who have always played both. It has ALWAYS been this way. Golden Axe was on the c64, Ultima was on the NES, Xevious was on the 2600, Doom was on the Super NES, Jaguar, Saturn, PS1, etc. It's always been this way. The PC isn't dying ok? As long as there is a system capable of playing games SOMEONE SOMEWHERE will make/sell games for it. Why else would there be games for a freaking TI-83 calculator on various programming sites? (I didn't say they were good) And as far as the whole "Constant" Upgrading myth about the PC? 1. It isn't constant unless you're that addicted to bleeding edge hardware. 2. As long as you've got a system with a PCI Express slot, and the abillity to upgrade RAM (Basically any PC over $500) You should at least be able to upgrade it affordably enough to play games throughout it's lifespan. 3. In year one, maybe it's more RAM. Year two a new videocard. If you're really worried in year three you might do a cheap processor upgrade. But other than that you can let it ride until it's time for a new system because 4. Games are scaleable. If times are tough (And for many of us myself included) where you can't afford an upgrade, or even a console for that matter, you can dial down the graphics to console, (Or even last gen console) standards to play the thing. The point is PC gaming doesn't have to be astronomical. By year 4 or 5 that PC at $500 might have costed $900 after your various tweaks. And you could still re use the monitor, speakers, KB, M, etc. on the next one. By contrast Figure a Console's cost has climbed, and you still need all new gamepads, accessories, and if you're the bleeding edge console guy, you're probably buying a HDTV if you already haven't so that puts you right in line with the guy who spent $3000 on a computer. You can budget a gaming hobby equally across the board. And besides A PC gamer could skip a videocard for another year for the console, and a console gamer could get an upgradable PC for around the same as a console. It's more affordable than ever to own both really. Finally. All of ID's games have made it to at least one console, so again I ask why are some of us surprised QWET is on a 360 next year when Q4 launched with the system?
make a comment AFTER it has been release for PC and Consoles. It is stupid to critize something not out yet and I am positive it will be a great game on consoles!
If only they could somehow get the xbox 360 players Vs the PS3 players Vs the PC players at the same time!!! It really would be all out war.
